United set sights on Sporting’s 23-yo star for sensational January reunion with Amorim – report

Manchester United are eyeing a deal for Sporting Lisbon centre back Gonçalo Inácio this month.

The Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sport Witness) claims that United are preparing a loan offer for Inácio with an obligation to buy for €40 million in the summer.

While the defender’s release clause is set at €60 million, Sporting could reportedly accept a deal at the €40 million mark due to their financial situation.

The 23-year-old Portuguese international has drawn interest from Borussia Dortmund, who have reportedly contacted Inácio’s agent, Miguel Pinho, to explore a potential transfer.

Pinho, who also represents Bruno Fernandes, reportedly visited England this week to discuss with United’s representatives, leveraging his strong ties with the club.

United have been tracking the centre-back for some time, and recent developments suggest they could take decisive action in January.

Ruben Amorim knows the player well from Sporting. His close relationship with Inácio could influence the player’s final decision.

Since his return from injury last year, Lisandro Martínez has struggled to recapture his defensive solidity.

Inácio could represent a like-for-like addition, offering similar attributes to Martínez, including being left-footed—a valuable trait in modern defensive systems.

In Amorim’s preferred three-centre-back formation, depth and quality are essential, requiring at least five reliable central defenders to manage rotations across multiple competitions.

Martínez, despite recent challenges, remains a key asset with much to offer. His versatility allows him to feature in alternative roles, providing flexibility within the squad.

Adding Inácio would not only strengthen the defensive core but also integrate a player familiar with Amorim’s tactical principles, ensuring a smoother adaptation to the manager’s demands.

“That was a mistake”: United are regretting the decision to bet big on this struggling star – David Ornstein

“That was a mistake”: United are regretting the decision to bet big on this struggling star – David Ornstein

Manchester United’s strikers have let Ruben Amorim down big time with the trio of Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford struggling to find the back of the net consistently.

The Dane still does not look ready to lead the line for a club of United’s size while the Mancunian has already declared his intention to leave his boyhood club.

But the biggest disappointment has been the summer signing with the Dutchman managing only four goals and two assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

The Netherlands international looks like more of a link-up player than a ruthless finisher, something that Amorim desperately needs right now.

        United regret buying Zirkzee

That is not the 23-year-old’s fault as INEOS knew the risks associated with signing someone with his skillset with former manager Erik ten Hag not his biggest fan.

And now, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has claimed United are regretting making the move for the former Bologna ace last summer.

They feel Zirkzee is not suited to the rigours of English football with the former Bayern Munich starlet attracting significant interest from Juventus, who are managed by ex-Bologna boss Thiago Motta.

The striker does not plan to leave, intent on trying to fight for his place but given the club’s PSR situation, he might be sacrificed.

“I think there’s been uncertainty around his immediate future because his transfer so far from Bologna hasn’t really gone to plan. There’s a feeling inside United at the moment that maybe that was a mistake,” Ornstein said.

        Zirkzee has struggled

“It is very early days, and this story focuses on him and his intentions. Despite a lot of interest reportedly building from elsewhere, he doesn’t intent to leave at the time of recording, and things can change.”

There have been reports stating that the player and head coach are at loggerheads since his ruthless substitution of Zirkzee during the Newcastle game.

The Netherlands star has been criticised by sections of the media for his poor pass that could have won United the game but his teammates are still backing him to come good.

Whether the young star can handle the pressure remains to be seen. But from United’s perspective, they certainly need an elite goalscorer and Zirkzee getting sacrificed in the process cannot be ruled out.

Mainoo transfer ‘surprising’ for Chelsea, Man Utd as he ‘wouldn’t get into team’ ahead of ‘top player’

Mainoo transfer ‘surprising’ for Chelsea, Man Utd as he ‘wouldn’t get into team’ ahead of ‘top player’

A pundit claims the prospect of Kobbie Mainoo leaving Manchester United for Chelsea is a “surprise at both ends” as he “wouldn’t get into the team”.

Mainoo enjoyed a remarkable breakout season for boyhood club Man Utd in 2024/25 and also shone for England at last year’s European Championships as he emerged as one of the best young players in the Premier League.

Despite this, it’s emerged that the Red Devils are open to letting Mainoo leave this year as they look to raise funds for a major rebuild.

The centre-midfielder is one of United’s most valuable assets and he would be a pure profit sale. Several clubs would presumably love to have him but it’s been reported that Chelsea are ‘leading’ the race to sign him.

While it’s been noted that United would sell Mainoo if a suitable offer arrives, they are also engaged in contract talks with the midfielder and it remains to be seen if he’ll leave or not.

Chelsea’s interest in Mainoo has “surprised” former England international Paul Robinson, who does not think the Man Utd star would start ahead of Romeo Lavia.

“Surprise with Chelsea, absolutely,” Robinson told Football Insider.

READ: Man Utd keep or sell: Amorim rebuild begins with 11 sales including Rashford and Garnacho

“But then you look at [Moises] Caicedo, [Enzo] Fernandez in their centre midfield. They’ve got injuries in that area now, like I say, but when everybody’s fit with Kobbie Mainoo in there, would he get in the team? No, he wouldn’t.

“[Romeo] Lavia’s been one of the best players in the Premier League for me this year, he’s a top, top player.”

“When they’ve got Lavia, Caicedo, and Fernandez fit, Mainoo doesn’t get in.

“Everyone at Manchester United will be for sale the way things are at the moment. Marcus Rashford looks like he’s going to be the first one out the door, doesn’t he?

“So, to get those wages off the books and that space in the squad gives the manager a better option than letting somebody like Kobbie Mainoo go.

“It’s a surprise deal at both ends for me.”

Ex-United defender Paul Parker has explained why he cannot see Mainoo leaving his boyhood club.

“I’d look and say with Kobbie Mainoo, where he’s from and everything he is about, does he want to leave Manchester United? I would say no,” Parker said.

“I would look at the way he is as a person, is he going to be greedy in what he wants? I would say no.

“So I can’t see them doing that because Manchester United has been built off players who have come through like him. If they were to do that, it would just cause too many issues.

“INEOS and the new kids on the block are already just hanging in there, so to do that would be a big statement to make.”

Man Utd battle PL relegation rivals for ‘extraordinary’ striker named as shock Amorim target with ‘dream’

According to reports, Manchester United have joined Leicester City in the race to sign 19-year-old striker Francesco Pio Esposito.

United head coach Ruben Amorim would presumably like to be busy in the transfer market this month as they are only seven points above the relegation zone after 2o matches.

The Red Devils produced their best performance of the season as they held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield last weekend, but they need upgrades in various positions and will likely overhaul their squad this year.

A recent report claimed Man Utd’s January priority is to sign a new striker, which is hardly surprising considering their struggles in front of goal this season.

It would be easier for Man Utd to sign a striker in the summer, but they could go for a short-term solution this month and PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani has been mentioned as a potential target.

Kolo Muani has struggled to make a substantial impact following his £76m move from Eintracht Frankfurt to PSG and has been made available for a transfer.

READ: Man Utd keep or sell: Amorim rebuild begins with 11 sales including Rashford and Garnacho

On Friday, German journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed Man Utd are “doing everything” to sign Kolo Muani.

He said: “Manchester United’s efforts to sign Randal Kolo Muani are becoming more concrete!

“The Red Devils are now determined to do everything possible to secure his transfer in the winter. Recently, there have been very specific talks with his management, and direct negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain are expected to follow.

“#MUFC are considering a loan deal, ideally with an option to buy.

“Other clubs still in the race include Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan, and others.”

Alternatively, United could sign Esposito as a report in Italy claims Amorim’s side and Leicester are ‘interested’ in the 19-year-old.

The Inter Milan youngster – who has scored seven goals in his eleven appearances for Italy’s U21s – had spent the last 18 months on loan at Serie B side Spezia.

The report notes his form has been ‘extraordinary’ this season as he’s scored nine goals in his 18 Serie B outings.

Man Utd and Leicester City are said to be ‘monitoring’ him, but his ‘dream’ is to establish himself at Inter Milan.

‘Even if the dream, declared several times, is to impose himself with Inter who holds the registration, there are the eyes of two clubs that have followed him and will continue to monitor him.

‘These are Manchester United and Leicester, situations to follow and that can bring developments that are certainly not unexpected for the qualities of the attacker.’

United set to complete first January signing of spectacular left back, medical scheduled – report

Manchester United are edging closer to securing the services of Diego León, a highly rated 17-year-old left-back from Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño.

The player is set to travel to England this weekend for his medical examination, as reported by Paraguayan media outlets Versus and La Nación.

The transfer agreement will see United pay Cerro Porteño $5 million, along with performance-related bonuses.

However, León’s official registration with United will not occur until he turns 18 in April, in compliance with FIFA regulations.

He will remain with Cerro Porteño for the first half of 2025 before joining United for their pre-season preparations in the summer.

His upcoming visit to Manchester is viewed as a key part of his adaptation process. The 17 year old will not only undergo medical tests but also get a firsthand experience of the facilities at Old Trafford and Carrington.

The teenager’s performances at club and international levels have already demonstrated his potential, and the club is optimistic about his development under their guidance.

Blessed with extraordinary pace and physicality, León excels at advancing into the final third, delivering dangerous crosses, and even finding himself on the end of attacking plays.

His technical ability allows him to maintain close control at high speeds, making him a constant threat in offensive transitions.

Comparisons to Marcelo are natural, given León’s propensity for prioritising attacking contributions over defensive solidity.

However, his defensive game remains a work in progress, with moments of rash decision-making and lapses in positioning occasionally marring his performances.

What sets León apart is his potential to grow into a well-rounded player.

With Man United’s resources and coaching expertise, he has the opportunity to develop his defensive instincts and tactical awareness, ensuring he can recover effectively and balance his attacking flair with solid backline duties.

United star in court due to dispute over unpaid wages with decision in coming weeks

United star in court due to dispute over unpaid wages with decision in coming weeks

Manchester United wide man, Antony, is in a formal dispute with his former club, Ajax, over claims of unpaid wages during his time in Amsterdam.

The Brazilian’s claims stem from Ajax fining him for his behaviour surrounding his mega money move to United in 2022.

The Dutch giants were initially against letting the player leave before United eventually agreed an eye-watering £81 million deal for the winger.

As reported by Sport Witness, Antony’s actions helped force the move with Ajax fining him for unprofessional behaviour at the time.

The 24-year-old claims the fines were unlawful and has been in dispute with his former club for the last two years.

With no resolution in sight, Antony’s representatives have recently approached the KNVB arbitration and are hoping for an answer in the coming weeks.

Reports state a hearing took place earlier this week and the verdict is expected within a month’s time to finally put an end to the saga.

Dutch pundit Jack van Gelder has been close to the ordeal and discussed the ongoing battle between player and club on De Oranjewinter.

Soccer News have relayed his comments and claims Van Gelder has made ‘mincemeat’ of the Brazilian’s dispute with the Amsterdam club.

“Antony wants some money. He played for Ajax and was at one point in the interest of Manchester United. Ajax wanted a certain amount, and Manchester United initially didn’t want to pay that. It lasted and lasted. Antony then dug in his heels and became ill, weak and nauseous,” he said.

“Ajax then withheld money from his salary. Ultimately, he went there for a record amount of €100m. The case was heard on Monday and a decision will be made soon,” claims Van Gelder.

Antony’s time at Old Trafford has been underwhelming to say the least with the player failing to get up to speed with the Premier League and struggling for form under Erik ten Hag.

Things haven’t improved under Ruben Amorim with the Brazilian clearly not part of the new head coach’s first team plans.

It’s expected United will look to move the winger on in the summer, if not in this window, to end his disappointing stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

Amorim drops injury bombshell ahead of FA Cup tie vs Arsenal, claims talismanic attacker is a doubt – report

Manchester United will begin their defence of the FA Cup with an arduous away test against Arsenal on Sunday with Ruben Amorim hoping to see more of the same intensity that his team displayed last week against Liverpool in the league.

The head coach has already revealed that backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is expected to start in goal ahead of No 1 Andre Onana, despite his calamitous error against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The game at the Emirates comes at the right time for the Red Devils with the Gunners failing to win their last two games while they will be without talisman, Bukayo Saka.

However, Amorim has injury problems of his own with Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount all ruled out of the contest.

                  Injury update

However, the biggest blow for the head coach would be if Amad Diallo fails to recover in time from a knock. The Ivorian has been one of the few standouts in what has been a hugely disappointing campaign so far.

The 22-year-old has six goals and seven assists this term, and has come up clutch in the big games with away goals against both Manchester City and Liverpool.

Amorim will need Amad in top form if the 20-time English league champions are to progress deeper into the competition and hopefully, the versatile forward can recover from his knock.

“Vic (Victor Lindelof) continues to be out, Jonny (Evans) continues to be out,” Amorim told club media. “Amad has a little injury but I think he can recover.

                  Amad yet to recover

“Luke Shaw continues his improvement, Mason Mount also. The rest are strong to compete for a place and to play again.”

Amad recently signed a contract extension with the club which will see him stay at Old Trafford until 2030, just reward for the progress he has shown since the end of last season.

It is testament to his resilience that despite unfairly being overlooked by former boss Erik ten Hag, the Ivory Coast international has come out all guns blazing under the new head coach and has become an undisputed starter.

In fact, while the club has started mulling over selling wonderkids like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho to steer clear of PSR concerns, Amad has been classified as untouchable, such is his importance to Amorim’s plans.

Rashford transfer: Man Utd to ‘accept’ cut-price offer amid Barcelona ‘contact’ in ‘big update’ with one ‘hurdle’

According to reports, FC Barcelona have ‘made contact’ with Manchester United as they consider a move for wantaway forward Marcus Rashford.

The England international has announced that he wants to leave Man Utd as he is “ready” for a new challenge.

Rashford has rightly been blasted for his dire performances over the past 18 months as his form has drastically declined after he scored 30 goals in the 2022/23 campaign.

The forward’s attitude has also been questioned and it’s probably right for all parties that they go their separate ways this year.

Rashford has failed to live up to expectations in recent years, but he is an immensely talented forward and he’s linked with several European sides.

AC Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are among the mooted destinations for Rashford, but it’s been reported that the La Liga giants are his ‘dream’ destination.

READ: Man Utd keep or sell: Amorim rebuild begins with 11 sales including Rashford and Garnacho

GiveMeSport have provided a ‘big update’ on Rashford’s situation as Barcelona have ‘made initial contact’ with Man Utd, but there is one ‘hurdle’.

‘Barcelona have made contact with Man Utd recently in order to get a full understanding of the situation around Rashford’s future, and find out the details of what it would take to get a deal done.

‘Barcelona have been dealing with financial issues in recent years and are currently embroiled in a legal battle to be able to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the season, with an appeal process ongoing after initially being denied the ability to do so.

‘Those complications will obviously be an hurdle to any potential deal this month, however GMS sources are told that if they are able to get around the situation once more then Rashford would see the La Liga outfit as his top-choice destination.’

While it’s previously been stated that United’s asking price for Rashford is £40m, the report also claims they ‘would accept £35m’ this month.

‘Monaco have also emerged as contenders for Rashford while AC Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have all been in touch about signing the forward, with Man Utd expecting a loan deal to be the formula that sees him depart the club.

‘However, GIVEMESPORT has been informed that United could become open to a permanent deal for a fee of £35m as INEOS look to solve their financial issues and begin the process of rebuilding the squad for manager Amorim.

‘PSR is a big hurdle for United currently and selling Rashford would open up a world of possibilities as any money brought in would be pure profit, while his £375,000-per-week wages are among the highest in the squad.’

Manchester United’s January transfer activity will hopefully include bringing in some fresh faces with Ruben Amorim desperate to add to his first team squad.

As always, a raft of names are being linked with a move to Manchester, with United short on numbers and quality at present.

One of the players reportedly on Amorim’s wish list is Napoli winger, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, it appears United are set to miss out on the Georgian international with Italian media suggesting that the wide man is close to joining French giants, Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ligue 1 champions are in advanced talks over a €70 million fee which would be enough to see Napoli part with their star man.

PSG chiefs have made significant progress regarding the deal in the last 24 hours and are growing increasingly confident of getting their man.

Kvaratskhelia’s electric form over the last few seasons has made him one of the most sought-after players in Europe and PSG will see the signing as a major coup given the interest surrounding him.

The player is set to miss Napoli’s next fixture against Hellas Verona to protect him from any injury that may scupper the potential move.

With Marcus Rashford expected to leave Old Trafford in the coming weeks, Kvaratskhelia was seen as a direct replacement for the Englishman who has fallen out of favour with Amorim in recent weeks.

But given United’s spending constraints thanks to PSR rules, they are set to miss out on signing the Napoli superstar, much to the frustrations of the fans.

INEOS will no doubt be exploring any and all means to try and provide Amorim with better tools for the second half of the season with United in dire need of improvement.

The team has been stuck in the bottom half of the table for the majority of the campaign and need to turn the tide to avoid an all-time low Premier League finish.
