United legend Denis Law passes away, aged 84

Manchester United legend Denis Law has passed away aged 84.

Law was one of the best strikers the club and perhaps the world has ever seen and is still today the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d’Or. He was also part of the 1968 United side that was the first English team to win the European Cup, now the Champions League.

He scored an incredible 237 goals in 404 appearances for the Red Devils and was nicknamed “the King”. He is one of the three players, along with George Best and Bobby Charlton, immortalised on the Trinity statue outside the Old Trafford stadium.

The club confirmed the sad news on their X account this evening, with a message from Law’s family, saying:

“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Law had been struggling with vascular dementia since 2021.

Manchester United is saddened to bring you the following statement from the family of Denis Law.

    — Manchester United (@ManUtd) January 17, 2025

The club also issued the following statement:

“Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players.

“The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’ family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”

Journalist Andy Mitten quotes Law’s teammate, Brian Kidd, as saying:

“He was slight, with the heart of a lion. An unbelievable finisher, he scored every type of goal. He said to me: ‘If you’re ever wide, don’t look up, put the cross in early. If I’m not there it’s my fault’. He was usually there. Sir Matt loved him. We all did. He was the King of the Stretford End.”

Law was awarded the CBE in 2016 for his services to football and charity.

The Peoples Person team would like to pass on their condolences to Denis’ family and friends at this difficult time.

A true legend in every sense of the word, King Denis will live on forever in our memories.

Manchester United and Scotland legend Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84.

Law – who scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for the Red Devils – confirmed in August 2021 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.

Known as The King by United fans, Law is one of the United Trinity, immortalised in a statue outside Old Trafford alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best.

Law’s family confirmed the news on Friday night. A statement read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

He won the European Cup, two English titles and the FA Cup in his 11 years at Old Trafford and scored 30 goals in 54 caps for his country.

Law was born in Aberdeen on 24 February, 1940 and came through the Huddersfield Town youth academy.

He moved to Manchester City in 1960, joined Italian side Torino a year later and returned to England for United in 1962, spending 11 years at the club before returning to City for a year.

Law became the last remaining member of the United Trinity in 2023 following the death of Charlton.

Man Utd transfer: Amorim admits PSG defeat as ‘preferred’ £38m replacement for Juve-bound star revealed

Ruben Amorim appears to have given up on signing Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain, with a Premier League alternative now named as his ‘preferred’ replacement for Tyrell Malacia.

Malacia missed the whole of last season through injury and has made just 44 appearances in total for United despite joining them in the summer of 2022.

He’s made two Premier League starts under Amorim but was hooked at half-time in both of them and it appears the Red Devils boss has seen enough.

CaughtOffside claim Amorim is willing to see the back of the 25-year-old with Juventus ‘making enquiries about’ his availability this month.

        The report adds:

‘The Italian football giants are looking to loan the player until the end of the season and then make the move permanent in the summer.

‘Importantly, sources have also advanced that the Bianconeri are ready to cover the bulk of Malacia’s £75,000-a-week salary.

‘Borussia Dortmund are also understood to be interested in a player who is in good form and, apparently, is keen to make a move to the Bundesliga.’

With Malacia’s exit and Luke Shaw’s horrific fitness record United will need to sign a new left-back this month and although previous reports have suggested Nuno Mendes is Amorim’s top target, they now appear to have admitted defeat in that chase.

Mendes is unhappy with the extension offers tabled by PSG and is thought to be keen on reuniting with Amorim, whom he played under at Sporting, but the Ligue 1 side’s £51m demand is beyond the Red Devils’ reach.

CaughtOffside now claim that Amorim has identified Wolves star Rayan Ait-Nouri as his ‘first-choice left-back’.

It’s not clear how much United would have to pay, with previous reports claiming Wolves also want £51m while others claim the Algerian has a £38m release clause, or whether they may be able to strike a loan deal, either with an obligation or option to buy.

The 23-year-old has managed three goals and five assists in 20 Premier League appearances this season, with only Fulham’s Antonee Robinson registering more goal involvements.

Liverpool have also been linked with Air-Nouri in the past but are instead thought to be closing in on a deal for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who has reportedly chosen the Reds over Man Utd and Man City as his next club, with Arne Slot wanting the Hungary international as the long-term replacement for Andy Robertson.

Manchester United are ‘seriously interested’ in signing Jamie Gittens, whose exit from Borussia Dortmund is ‘very likely’ on one condition.

Ruben Amorim is desperate to bolster his United squad with a 3-1 win over Southampton on Thursday papering over significant cracks evident in that display and throughout his short tenure at Old Trafford.

That victory lifted the Red Devils into 12th place but they remain closer to the relegation zone than the top four having won just seven of their 21 Premier League games this season.

The problem for Amorim and United is that they need to sell before they buy this month with PSR regulations limiting their spending.

That’s why previously ‘untouchable’ players now have a price, with Napoli pushing to sign Garnacho and Chelsea keeping tabs on contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo.

Marcus Rashford’s presumed exit will provide some wiggle room on the wage bill, but not all that much given United will likely have to subsidise his loan move by paying a significant chunk of his wages.

In the main, Amorim will probably have to make do with what he’s got for the rest of the season, with the required rebuild more likely to start (or continue depending how you look at it) in the summer.

And Florian Plettenberg claims United are ‘seriously interested’ in Gittens, who – much like Jadon Sancho – left the Manchester City academy for Dortmund, and has managed 16 goals and 14 assists in 83 appearances for the Bundesliga slide.

He’s got seven goals and four assists this term, with that form also catching the eye of rivals Bayern Munich, who have ‘already held talks’ with his representatives over a summer move, while United keep tabs on his situation.

Plettenberg further claims that the England U21 international’s exit is ‘very likely’ if Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League this term, which is presumably also bad news for United, whose chances of making into Europea’s showcase competition are slim to none.

Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘Jamie #Gittens remains a top transfer target for FC Bayern in the upcoming summer. Bayern have already held talks with his management, as they aim to sign at least one top winger. All exclusively revealed in December.

“So poor:” United fans rapidly losing patience with player who “barely had a kick” vs Southampton

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund appears to be losing the faith of the club’s fanbase following what was another poor performance on his part against Southampton last night.

Substituted after just 53 minutes, Hojlund’s recent poor form continued, even against an opponent sitting 20th in the Premier League. Winning just two out of 10 duels, it is increasingly looking as if he is not of a standard to play at an elite club such as Man United.

“Amorim might have a smile on his face more often than not, but he is a ruthless coach, and he hooked Rasmus Hojlund just minutes into the second half when he lost another aerial duel,” Steven Railston wrote for the Manchester Evening News.

“Hojlund’s hold-up play was abysmal, and he was bullied by the inexperienced Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek, who seemed to win every ball that was punted forward. Finally, Amorim decided he’d seen enough when Hojlund couldn’t make the ball stick in the 49th minut,e and United’s head coach responded by replacing him with Joshua Zirkzee.”

While manager Ruben Amorim clearly decided that substitute Zirkzee would be an improvement on Hojlund, he is not the only one who lost patience with the Dane’s jaded showing.

“Plenty of United fans now starting to get frustrated with Hojlund, who has barely had a kick and lost almost every duel he’s been involved in,” Samuel Luckhurst posted on X, noting the fans’ reactions to the Danish striker’s disappointing performance.

            — Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) January 16, 2025

Even United legend Paul Scholes has been finding it difficult to identify positive aspects of Hojlund’s performances in recent times.

“Amorim said that about his own team, United were really poor. The side of the defender to pass the ball, the weight of pass, the control when it came into Rasmus Hojlund was so poor at times; he kept giving it back to them,” Scholes noted after the match.

Hojlund’s poor performances on the pitch are nothing new, however.

Over the course of the season, the Dane has scored just seven goals in 25 matches across all competitions. It’s important to note that five of these goals came in the Europa League against weaker opposition such as Bodø/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen. In the Premier League, Hojlund has found the back of the net just twice in 16 appearances. (Transfermarkt)

With his persisting poor form, one can only guess how much longer Hojlund will be given a spot in Amorim’s starting 11 before the United boss runs out of patience.

Perhaps the time has come for United to admit their poor recruitment choice and seek a new striker in the ongoing transfer window.

United make major u-turn, turn down “important offer” for Ten Hag’s flop signing – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United turned down Juventus’ approach for Joshua Zirkzee, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Zirkzee had a very tough start to life in Manchester. After impressing at Bologna under Thiago Motta, the Dutchman agreed to join United in the summer in a deal believed to be worth £36.5 million.

The 23-year-old scored on his debut but swiftly fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag. Ruben Amorim’s arrival initially made little difference as the Netherlands international continued to struggle for minutes.

He ended 2024 on a frustrating note as Amorim hooked him off after just 33 minutes in his side’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United. The jeers from the crowd at Old Trafford only made things worse.

Amid this, it has been widely reported that the Red Devils are open to letting him leave in January, with clubs in Italy keen on bringing him back to Serie A, where he was brilliant with Bologna.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that United closed the doors when Juve made an attempt to sign the struggling forward earlier this month.

As per the Italian journalist, before the Old Lady signed Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain, they presented “a formal approach” to United for Zirkzee.

The Serie A giants wanted a loan deal with an “important” option to buy. They were prepared to cover his salary as well as pay a loan fee to get the deal over the line.

United, however, remained adamant that their young forward isn’t going anywhere. Further, the player is believed to be equally keen on staying and fighting for his place at the Theatre of Dreams.

In recent games, Zirkzee, who has four goals and two assists to his name so far this season, has looked a lot more promising.

In particular, he was brilliant against Southampton after coming off the bench.

His hold-up play and ball-carrying helped the Mancunians push the visitors into the final third and bag three late goals to take all three points.

United forward does not want to leave United this January despite PL giants entering the race – report

Manchester United were forced to dig deep and eventually ran out 3-1 winners against Southampton after mounting a late comeback at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Amad Diallo’s 12-minute hattrick saved Ruben Amorim’s blushes with the bottom-of-the-barrel Saints making the hosts look distinctly average for most of the game.

The team had Andre Onana to thank for his numerous excellent saves while the Red Devils were also guilty of spurning two glorious chances in either half.

Alejandro Garnacho had the chance to open the scoring but missed an almost open goal while substitute scuffed his attempt from the Argentine’s low cross when it seemed harder to miss.

                Amorim praised Garnacho

Despite the 20-year-old failing to find the back of the net, Amorim did praise his out of possession work ethic, something he has demanded from the Argentina international.

It is well known that the academy graduate is being eyed by a whole host of clubs including Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea with INEOS open to a departure as they seek pure profit.

The former Atletico Madrid starlet did not seem like a natural fit in Amorim’s system, which the head coach said as much before Sunday’s Brighton game but did admit that his winger is showing the fight needed to adapt.

He is having to play as a No 10 instead of a winger who thrives on those transition moments but the head coach is pleased with his desire and hard work and more opportunities are expected.

“That is clear. He has talent and he needs to learn to play in a different position. He needs to play better inside,” Amorim said.

“Garnacho improves a lot in the recovering position when he doesn’t have the ball. But doing that, sometimes he’s not in the right place to make transitions like he was in the past. I prefer to defend and then build up with all the team to reach the final third.

“He’s finding the best way to play in this system. He’s improving during training. He started the last game. Let’s see tomorrow. I think he changed the way he sees himself.”

                Garnacho not looking to leave

And despite so many links and reports claiming he could be on his way should any outfit match United’s asking price, The Manchester Evening News has claimed that Garnacho himself is not looking to leave Old Trafford anytime soon.

“Alejandro Garnacho is not actively pursuing a move away from Manchester United despite mounting uncertainty over his future. United have refused to comment on Garnacho’s future and the winter window is open until February 3.”

The Argentina international was dropped by Amorim for the Manchester derby and his attitude was questioned and subsequently, he had to make do with only substitute appearances.

But he has proven his worth in the last three games, picking up two assists in the process and fans will hope he can continue in the same vein so that he can restore his status as an untouchable member of the United squad.

Chelsea make contact over Garnacho as they look to hijack ‘very likely’ Man Utd transfer

Chelsea have ‘made enquiries’ about Man Utd winger Alejandro Garnacho and Red Devils target Jamie Gittens, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Garnacho has been the subject of strong interest from Napoli with the Serie A club reportedly having an approach of around £40m turned down by Man Utd.

Man Utd are believed to be keen on hanging on to Garnacho despite his poor form with the Argentina international one of the hottest prospects at Old Trafford.

It is believed that the Red Devils ‘will begin to consider a deal’ if Garnacho asks to leave for Napoli and that the Serie A side offer over £50m.

Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a move for the Man Utd winger with The Athletic journalist Ornstein confirming that Chelsea have also ‘made enquiries’.

Ornstein wrote on The Athletic‘s transfer blog:

‘Chelsea have made enquiries about Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund as they consider options to bolster in the wide attacking areas.

‘The 20-year-old wingers are among multiple candidates of interest to Chelsea as they explore potential signings.

‘Conversations remain at an early stage, with Garnacho and Gittens fitting the profile the west London club are pondering to bolster head coach Enzo Maresca’s squad.’

The news of Chelsea’s interest in Gittens comes after Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed that Man Utd are ‘seriously interested’ in the Borussia Dortmund star.

Plettenberg continued by insisting that Gittens exit from Dortmund is ‘very likely’ if the Bundesliga side fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

German reporter Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘Jamie #Gittens remains a top transfer target for FC Bayern in the upcoming summer. Bayern have already held talks with his management, as they aim to sign at least one top winger. All exclusively revealed in December.

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker reckons the Red Devils could replace Garnacho if he was to leave the club in the next couple of transfer windows.

Parker told Betfred: “Regarding Garnacho, if someone new were to come in, I don’t think he holds the same as [Kobbie] Mainoo. Would he be missed in that sense? I would personally say no, not at all really, and doubt he would be missed too much if he were to go.

“It appears that he is already looking for that move anyway and will go once he thinks that a big club abroad is going to be better than Manchester United. I think he will only find out once he gets there that it won’t be the same. He will understand that where he is now is virtually as good as it gets, and he needs to show everything.”

Man Utd: Marcus Rashford ‘close’ to transfer as he sends Barcelona arrival message

Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford is ‘close’ to leaving the Red Devils for Barcelona but only if they guarantee him a starting role, according to reports.

Rashford made it clear last month that he is ready for a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford after failing to hit good form over the last 18 months.

The England international was left out of the squad for the Manchester Derby by Ruben Amorim before Rashford announced in an interview with journalist Henry Winter that he is likely to leave Man Utd.

Despite coming back into the squad for the 2-0 loss to Newcastle on December 30, Rashford has not played a single minute since the Red Devils beat Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

A report last week insisted that Milan were pushing for Noah Okafor to join Bundesliga side Leipzig in January ‘to allow them to go all in for Rashford’.

But Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze revealed earlier this week that RB Leipzig have ‘cancelled the transfer’ after the results of his medical showed that Okafor is “not ready for action”.

Hinze wrote on X: ‘Exclusive: RB Leipzig have stopped the Okafor transfer! The results of the medical check showed that Okafor is not an immediate help. The Swiss player is not ready for action. As a result, Leipzig have cancelled the transfer. Okafor will not move to Leipzig! Deal collapsed.’

That has seen rumours Man Utd forward Rashford could join Borussia Dortmund or Barcelona instead before the end of the January transfer window.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg reported on Thursday that Dortmund are now “pushing” for Rashford as they look to secure a loan deal for Man Utd man.

Transfer expert Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘Sebastian Kehl and Nuri Sahin are now pushing to sign Marcus Rashford!

‘New talks have taken place, with Borussia Dortmund aiming to secure him on loan.

‘The decision to pursue Rashford was made after Friday’s defeat, as exclusively revealed.

‘However, AC Milan are also very concrete in their interest and are actively trying to secure a deal themselves.’

And now reports in Spain claim that Rashford ‘is close to being the reinforcement in attack’ for Barcelona and that he ‘arrives with a direct message’.

The England international has ‘become the club’s main target for this winter transfer market’ but Rashford ‘has made his intentions clear from the beginning: if he comes to Barca, it is to be a starter.’

Man Utd forward Rashford ‘wants sporting guarantees before accepting the challenge of dressing for Barca’ and Hansi Flick ‘knows that his arrival will generate direct competition, especially with Raphinha , who is going through a great moment in the team’.

Rashford is convinced that ‘competition with Raphinha would not be a problem, but rather a motivation’ as the England and Man Utd player can play on either flank or through the middle.

Former United managerial target plotting Ligue 1 raid for two superstars INEOS have wanted for long time – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim needs midfielders capable of playing as a No 10 as well as a striker given his team’s difficulties in front of goal.

Rasmus Hojlund has not scored a goal for over a month now while Christian Eriksen seems to be on his way out and the Red Devils have had their eyes on two soon-to-be free agents from Ligue 1 for a long time now and they could be just the kind of replacements needed by the Portuguese head coach.

Fans will know all about Angel Gomes with the United academy graduate leaving for Lille back in 2020 after a contract dispute.

The 24-year-old has shone in France, and from his initial days as an attacking midfielder, Gomes has transformed his game and now excels in a deep-lying position.

Gomes and David are United targets

His form for Lille saw him finally break into the England national team and United are among numerous interested parties ready to pounce when the Carrington graduate does leave Lille.

The Englishman’s teammate Jonathan David is another Lille star whose contract ends in 2025 and his goalscoring exploits have caught the attention of United among other sides.

The Canadian has 17 goals and six assists this season and recent reports have stated David’s agent will soon be in touch with the Red Devils as he looks to get his client a lucrative move.

TBR Football have now added that West Ham United’s new boss Graham Potter has told the club that he wants both United targets at the London Stadium next season.

“TBR Football can reveal that new West Ham United boss Graham Potter wants the club to bring Lille duo Angel Gomes and Jonathan David to the club this summer.

                      West Ham want Lille duo

“Both England international Gomes and Canadian ace David are out-of-contract this summer, and both have confirmed to the club they will be departing on free transfers this summer.”

Gomes is also wanted by English sides like Tottenham and Aston Villa, whilst Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are also interested.

As for the Canada international, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa are all considering making an offer in the summer.

Whether the Hammers can get the duo or whether United will jump for them remains to be seen. But it is clear that midfield and up front are two areas that INEOS will look to strengthen in.
