United “expected to accept” Chelsea’s €70m offer for Garnacho, 20yo star “very keen on move” – report

Manchester United are “expected to accept” a €70 million proposal from Chelsea to sign Alejandro Garnacho with the 20-year-old winger “very keen on the move” to Stamford Bridge, according to an academy source.

Yesterday, Fabrizio Romano stated the London club were “set to approach” their rival over a move for Garnacho after receiving positive feedback from talks with the Argentine’s representatives.

Later, as relayed by The Peoples Personthis approach was confirmed with an Argentinian reporter revealing an offer had been made by Chelsea, though no details were given on the amount.

United are reluctantly open to selling Garnacho this month in an effort to combat the club’s precarious financial position. The Premier League’s Profits and Sustainability Rules are impeding the ability to sign players this month, while offering a distant threat of penalties in the future should the situation not improve.

As such, the 20-year-old winger is one of few candidates at Old Trafford who would command a considerable fee in the transfer market, whose status as an academy player ensures any money received from a sale would constitute a financial fair play treasure trove as ‘pure profit’.

Kobbie Mainoo, 19, would also fall into this category but the midfield starlet has a more obvious place in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, either in central midfield or as one of the number tens.

Garnacho, by comparison, lacks the defensive awareness to play as a wingback and is a poor fit as a number ten, compared to his favoured left-wing position.

This unexpected potential expendability of such a young talent had put rival clubs on red alert, with Napoli emerging as an early frontrunner for Garnacho in a bid to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a €70 million move last week.

However, the Italian club are not willing to match United’s valuation of their young winger, believed to be a similar price of €70 million. But it appears Chelsea are prepared to go further than their continental competition for Garnacho.

MUFC Academy, a source with excellent information relating to the United academy, reveals Chelsea will match the €70 million valuation and the Red Devils are “expected to accept the proposal”.

Tweet: “Chelsea set to bid for Alejandro Garnacho today, proposal expected to be submitted soon for the United winger after initial positive talks with between both clubs. Chelsea and United have a good relationship after previously working on deals with each other.

Understand there’s a verbal agreement between Garnacho and Chelsea and negotiations will now start between clubs. Bid expected to be in the region of £60.5m.

United are expected to accept the proposal as it meets the valuation of €70m plus(around £60m) should Chelsea offer that. Garnacho has always favoured moving to Chelsea over Napoli. Chelsea will push to make it happen as player is very keen on the move, though he’s open to staying.

United have lined up three replacements to replace Garnacho and two play in the premier league for clubs currently in the bottom half of the premier league.”

The source contends Garnacho is “very keen” on joining Chelsea, as it’s thought his preference is to remain in England as opposed to Italy, but stresses the Argentinian international is “open to staying” at United as well.

There appears to be little driving this potential move other than balance sheets in the finance department at Old Trafford, which will make it even harder for fans to swallow if one of the club’s shining young talents joins a direct rival.

However, MUFC Academy also contends United have “lined up three replacements” should Garnacho leave, with two playing at clubs in the “bottom half of the Premier League.”

While no further information is given on the identifies of these targets, the description suggests Mattheus Cunha – star forward for 17th-place Wolverhampton Wanderers – could be one option.

The Brazilian is enjoying a brilliant season, despite playing in a struggling Wolves team. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the 25-year-old, while high-flying Nottingham Forest are prepared to make a “club-record” bid to win the race for him.

Cunha’s ability to play effectively as a number nine or a number ten, combined with his excellent physicality, work rate and technique, makes him an ideal player in Amorim’s system.

If Garnacho was to be sold, there are few candidates who would make a better replacement than the Wolves forward. But it would still prove a bitter pill to swallow to see the young Argentine in a blue shirt come February.

Man Utd target ‘late January loan swoop’ for Barcelona star in possible Rashford sweetener

Man Utd target ‘late January loan swoop’ for Barcelona star in possible Rashford sweetener

Man Utd could make a move for Barcelona winger Ansu Fati before the end of the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are set to see a few of their players leave in January if current transfer rumours are to be believed with Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony all linked to moves away from Old Trafford.

Man Utd need to raise funds if they are to buy any new players in the winter market and Ruben Amorim is identifying players who don’t fit his system or style of play.

Antony is on the verge of joining Real Betis on loan from Man Utd, Napoli and Chelsea want to sign Garnacho, Rashford has interest from Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and Monaco, while Malacia could also depart.

Man Utd boss Amorim labelled his squad “maybe the worst team in the history” of Man Utd after they lost 3-1 to Brighton on Sunday and will be hoping for some reinforcements before the transfer deadline.

And GiveMeSport journalist Dean Jones claims that Man Utd ‘could be tempted to make a late January loan swoop to sign’ Fati from Barcelona.

      The report adds:

‘The Red Devils are eager to bolster Ruben Amorim’s frontline with a new signing in the winter window, and could turn to short-term options if they fail to secure their primary targets.

‘While Fati’s availability will become clearer in the coming days, he is likely to be made available by Barcelona after struggling for regular game time under Hansi Flick this season.’

      GiveMeSport continues:

‘According to Jones, Man United sources insist that an outright loan for Fati would not be tempting at the moment as the club prefer players who fit into their long-term plans rather than temporary solutions.

‘However, they may have to reconsider that stance if they are desperate for fresh attacking talent in the closing stages of the January transfer window.’

Rashford is a target for Barcelona with a transfer to the Catalan giants understood to be the Man Utd forward’s preferred move and interest in Fati could potentially play a part in a potential deal.

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker has accused Rashford of being dishonest with the club and fans amid speculation over his future.

Parker said: “Given Amorim has only been here ten minutes I don’t think he’ll be worried about losing Rashford to another Premier League side. He’ll have seen that Rashford wasn’t showing enough effort or delivering.

“Does he fit in what I want to do? Not really because he wants to play out wide left. Does he fit into one of the two number ten roles? I don’t think he does. He wants to sit on the touchline on the left, cut inside and shoot, quite basic really. It’s like park football with him. Players just want to play one position.”

“If he did it at another club, people that love and see the game would be disappointed with him because it’s him being selfish and disrespectful to his town, to the fans, to the team he played for.

“Rashford hasn’t been honest with himself and the club he’s supposed to love. People want to act like he’s been treated badly but if your kid is continually behaving badly you’ve got to tell them off.

“Manchester United have decided to let him go because they got hoodwinked into giving him a lot of money. They paid well over the going rate with him. Eric Cantona didn’t get the sort of money Rashford has earned.

“The club have tried their best to get the best out of him. It’s okay to have a bad game but be honest to the club and fans and he hasn’t done that.”

Man Utd transfer blow as Amorim target ‘wants to join’ rivals after ‘significant twist’

Manchester United and West Ham-linked Lille midfielder Angel Gomes reportedly wants to join Tottenham at the end of the season.

Gomes is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to leave Lille on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old came through the Man United youth academy before joining the French club following the expiry of his contract in 2020.

He was only 19 at the time and made 10 appearances for the Red Devils’ first team, making his debut as a 16-year-old under Jose Mourinho.

On a completely irrelevant note, the Man United starting XI against Crystal Palace that day included Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Joel Pereira, Axel Tuanzebe in defensive-midfield, Josh Harrop and Demetri Mitchell.

Gomes has been very impressive for Lille and helped England Under-21s win the European Championship in 2023.

That Young Lions team was managed by Lee Carsley, who introduced Gomes to the senior team during his time as interim manager last year.

The midfielder now has four caps after making his senior debut last September.

Although he had already impressed plenty of Premier League clubs with his performances in Ligue Un, those England appearances made clubs take more notice of him.

The prospect of signing him for nothing is very attractive as well, with West Ham, Man United and Spurs all reportedly keen.

It looks like Ange Postecoglou’s side are the favourites to sign Gomes, six months before the end of his Lille contract.

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs have been handed a ‘significant boost’ in their pursuit of Gomes, who ‘wants to join’ the club this summer.

The England playmaker is ‘keen to embark on a fresh challenge at Hotspur Way instead of the London Stadium or Old Trafford’, it is claimed.

More than United, West Ham and Spurs are looking at Gomes, though Newcastle United and Aston Villa are the only other clubs mentioned in the report.

Despite the high volume of interest, the north Londoners are ‘confident’ they will land the player at the end of 2024/25 and are now ‘putting together a proposal’.

The Hammers have apparently ‘pushed a pre-contract in his direction’, which is a ‘significant twist’ after Spurs had viewed the Red Devils as their biggest competition.

Despite this, Spurs are ‘becoming increasingly optimistic that he is interested in making the move’ having ‘looked at a cut-price deal’ in the January transfer window.

There is also interest from Germany, with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig ‘all keeping tabs’.

Spurs are somehow worse off than West Ham and Man United in the Premier League table having lost five and drawn one of their last six matches.

United once again put fans in danger with a repeat of last season’s big blunder – report

Manchester United have found themselves in more difficulties with their fans after a significant number of Rangers supporters got into the home section of the Old Trafford crowd.

United defeated the Gers 2-1 after a late goal from Bruno Fernandes put the home side in an excellent position to qualify automatically for the last 16 directly.

There was a great atmosphere in the ground all night as the Glaswegians travelled in droves to the match but it was apparently not just the away end that had a significant Rangers following.

Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst posted on X last night that “some fans are on the other side of the steward segregation (ie. in the home section) in the east stand are clapping along to the Rangers chant in the away end. Could be a lively night on the terraces.”

The journalist also posted that there were Rangers fans “all over the place” in the home stadium.

Luckhurst also posted that his friends had said there had been violence between the two sets of fans and that it “all kicked off” at one point with the police having to get involved.

Three messages from three friends here tonight in different areas of the ground:
‘Kicked off from every angle immediately after Rangers.’
‘Police running around in the concourse of the north stand after the game.’
‘Saw four get a kicking at HT in the concourse and thrown out.’…

This is not the first time this has happened as during Galatasaray’s 3-2 win at Old Trafford 15 months ago, there were numerous travelling Turks who had made their way into the home crowd.

The club launched an investigation into those events and have responded this time around as well.

United released a statement claiming, “tickets were only allocated to people who existed on our database prior to the draw taking place in August. Hospitality tickets had the same restrictions applied.”

“Whilst the unauthorised touting of tickets has become more difficult since our introduction of in-app digital ticketing, it cannot be completely eliminated.”

The club also promised that the situation will be investigated and that there will be serious ramifications for those registered holders who gave up their ticket.

It is another embarrassing moment for Ineos in what has been a challenging few months for their image as owners of the football club.

Napoli release official statement regarding president’s alleged comments about Alejandro Garnacho – Fabrizio Romano

SSC Napoli have denied that their president Aurelio De Laurentiis commented on Alejandro Garnacho’s potential move to the club yesterday.

The Argentine has constantly hit the headlines this January about a transfer away from Old Trafford.

Chelsea are said to be highly interested in the 20 year old and have reportedly lodged a bid for his services.

Napoli are also believed to have made a bid for the starlet but it has reportedly been rejected by the club.

The Italians have not given up on the signing and will likely make another effort to try to close a deal in the coming days.

It was reported last night that De Laurentiis bizarrelly questioned whether the United player would be able to score 20 goals for his team if he were to sign him.

It didn’t seem the most logical statement to make when the Italian side is so publicly pursuing the youngster and it now appears to have never happened.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano posted on X that “Napoli deny president de Laurentiis’ statement on Alejandro Garnacho.”

“No public statement from the president on Garnacho.”

Ruben Amorim also addressed the Youth Cup winner’s future after the game last night when he praised his performance and claimed he is a Manchester United player.

Nonetheless, he did leave the door open to a move by saying we shall see what happens in the next few days, hardly slamming the door shut to a move.

It will interesting to see what part, if any, the Argentine plays on Sunday evening at Fulham amid the rumours swirling over his future.

Chelsea and Manchester City clash before Amorim hopes to avoid another late show

A game that Manchester City and Chelsea may have hoped would be a title clash but which is now about Champions League qualification tops this weekend’s bill.

Game to watch: Manchester City v Chelsea
A team who would have assumed they’d be in the title race against one who until very recently were, this now instead finds itself a crunch clash in the race to secure a top-four (or probably now more accurately despite City’s shambling efforts top-five) finish among those clubs who just haven’t been able to keep pace with Liverpool, Arsenal or, obviously, Nottingham Forest.

Generally feels vaguely wrong when the best game of a weekend isn’t on the Sunday, but it feels apt here, somehow. The Saturday evening slot is just the thing for a pair of teams slugging it out for the European placings while leaving the title conversation to the big boys: Liverpool, Arsenal and, obviously, Nottingham Forest.

City have improved in recent weeks, but the fact that improvement has taken in a pair of collapses from 2-0 up – to draw 2-2 at Brentford in the Premier League and lose 4-2 to PSG this week in the Champions League – offers a clue as to just how very bad they’d got.

Miraculously, in a format designed specifically to eliminate the possibility, City now find themselves in danger of an early European exit. Some have suggested that City’s must-win fixture against Club Brugge next week shows the format is fine; we have long-standing grumbles about the new format and would instead argue the exact opposite. The fact City have been this bad and still only need a home win against, with all due respect, decidedly Europa opposition to progress only highlights rather than conceals the sheer lack of jeopardy.

Chelsea had no such issues sauntering through the shorter Conference League group stage before Christmas and thus have the advantage and rare luxury of a blank midweek to prepare for a game that could well improve their chances of avoiding spending any more time in Europe’s lowlier competitions.

              Team to watch: Manchester United
Shunted into the unloved Sunday 7pm slot because of their Europa League obligations, Man United make their latest bid to get their chaotic Premier League season on some kind of even keel against the thinking man’s mid-table team Fulham at Craven Cottage.

A late Sunday kick-off in That London might not be ideal for travelling Manchester United fans – and we will ask you at this time to please stay strong and resist the oldest and dullest of football fandom jokes – but there is good news for the rest of us.

And it’s this: you only need to tune in for last few minutes anyway. For it is only in the final few minutes of matches where Ruben Amorim’s moribund side become watchable. But oh how watchable.

United have won only four of their last 13 matches across four competitions in 50 days since spanking Everton at the start of December.

But in those four wins the earliest winning goal United have scored came in the 88th minute, at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa. They didn’t even equalise until that point before going on to win at City, while another Amad Diallo late show turned no points into one point on 82 minutes and then one point into three points and two goals into a hat-trick in injury-time against Southampton.

Bruno Fernandes then scored a winner two minutes into injury time against Rangers on Thursday night, just four minutes after the Scottish side had found a breathtaking and unlikely equaliser.

So no need to stick this one on until about 8.45pm, guys.

              Player to watch: Jean-Philippe Mateta
Crystal Palace are much improved from their early-season woes and firmly on course to complete yet another season with 40-something points while finishing somewhere between 10th and 15th as they have done with genuinely terrifying consistency for more than a decade now.

But one thing they still don’t do all that well is score goals. They still have only 25 to their name in the Premier League this season, and only 10 of those at Selhurst Park. Only Ipswich and Southampton have scored fewer goals in front of their own fans, and that is not really company one wants to be keeping currently.

One player who is doing his bit, though, is Mateta. He’s now scored four of Palace’s five Premier League goals in 2025, including both from last weekend’s encouraging 2-0 win at West Ham and a late equaliser against Chelsea.

It’s not always been easy for Mateta this season but he does now have eight Premier League goals and a decent chance to add against a Brentford team going into the weekend with an away record this season better only than Southampton and Leicester. Again, not really company one wants to be keeping, that.

              Manager to watch: Graham Potter
A big early test for the new West Ham manager as he takes his side to the midlands for a claret-and-blue derby at Aston Villa.

Thanks to the quirks of both the fixture computer and the FA Cup draw, it’s not even the first time he’s faced that exact test. A narrow defeat in the cup has left Potter and the Hammers with only survival to worry about for the remaining months of the season and, while there has been the odd encouraging sign in the early weeks of Potter’s long-awaited return to work, the scale of the task facing him remains clear after a limp 2-0 defeat at Palace last time out.

Potter remains desperately short of options in attack, with Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Niclas Fullkrug all still out and Crysencio Summerville also potentially unavailable and will need to pull something out of the hat. At the very least his side must show more than they did at Palace even if Villa still prove too strong as they look to close in on the top five.

Football League game to watch: Huddersfield v Bolton
The best of the Saturday lunchtime action from the EFL appears to come from League One, with Bolton’s trip to promotion-chasing Huddersfield.

The Terriers are unbeaten in the league since snapping a four-match losing run back in October, but have developed a mildly vexing habit in recent weeks of drawing at home. Decent chance here of putting that right against a managerless team they beat 4-0 away earlier in the campaign, just before that four-straight-defeats unpleasantness kicked in.

European game to watch: Napoli v Juventus
A big test for Antonio Conte’s title chasers against a Juventus side enjoying/enduring a bizarre season. Napoli have lost three games this season, while Juventus remain unbeaten. Yet the 13-point gap between them in the league is very much in Napoli’s favour.

Because while Napoli have drawn only twice and won the other 16 of the games they haven’t lost, Juve now have a ridiculous and none-more-Serie A 13 draws from their 21 games this season to go with eight wins.

And they are, if anything, leaning into this eccentricity with seven draws in the last nine. And yes, if you’re wondering, one of Napoli’s two draws did indeed come against Juventus back in September and yes, it was 0-0.

We appreciate we may not be really selling this as a ‘game to watch’ here, but you have to admit it’s something. It is a lot of draws.

United issue statement in response to major concern raised by fan groups

United issue statement in response to major concern raised by fan groups

Manchester United have issued a response to two fan groups – The 1958 and Fan Coalition 58 – after concerns were raised over the increased ticket prices and treatment of supporters.

Towards the end of last year, fans were left furious after United’s decision to raise matchday ticket prices to £66 per game, with no concessions for children or pensioners.

The decision led to hundreds of United fans turning out to protest outside Old Trafford before the meeting with Everton on December 1.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe defended the move, arguing it did not make sense for a United ticket to cost less than one at Fulham. The INEOS billionaire also refused to rule out further ticket increases.

Fan groups wrote to United CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Fan Engagement Rick McGagh, to express their anger at the club.

United issued a response, admitting that they are at risk of breaching profit and sustainability (PSR) rules and that such moves are necessary to increase revenues.

In a letter addressed to the two fan groups, United outlined their delicate financial position.

“Dear The 1958 and Fan Coalition 58, Thank you for your letters received by Omar Berrada (CEO) and Rick McGagh (Director of Fan Engagement).”

“We agree that our fans are what makes Manchester United the greatest football club in the world. We greatly value and appreciate the loyalty and passion our fans have for the club, and the difference this makes to the team. We are determined to ensure that our current fans can continue to afford to attend games and that tickets are accessible for future generations of fans.”

“As previously communicated, we are however currently making a significant loss each year—totalling over £300m in the past 3 years. This is not sustainable and if we do not act now we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR/FFP requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch.”

“We will get back to a cash-positive position as soon as possible and we will have to make some difficult choices to get there. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club. None of this has been easy, but we believe it is essential to restoring financial sustainability to the club which will underpin us as we work to get back to the top of English and European football.”

“We do not expect fans to make up all the current shortfall—but we do need to look at our ticketing strategy to ensure we are charging the right amount, and offering the right discounts, across our products for our fans.”

“We have committed to formal consultation with our Fans’ Advisory Board (FAB) about this who will challenge and help shape proposals which will then be decided upon by our ownership group. The FAB isn’t a decision-making body—it is advisory—but we are committed to collaboratively working together to help us come to the best outcome for fans and for the club.”

“Once we have an approved strategy and pricing policy for the 25/26 season we will communicate the details to all fans.”

“At this time, no decisions have been taken and the process of consultation is beginning. Until we have an outcome we will not be commenting further regarding what may or may not change for next season. However, we will share the views you have expressed in your letter to the FAB ahead of our discussions and can confirm we understand clearly your views.”

“Finally, we are always happy to listen to fan-led ideas about ways to grow revenue so please do share any thoughts you have on this.”

“Best wishes and thank you for sharing your views on this important matter.”

Over the past year, United have introduced various cost-cutting measures, with a recent report revealing that former players and current club ambassadors Bryan Robson, Andy Cole, and Denis Irwin will face significant cuts in their salaries starting next season.

Arsenal hijacking Rashford, Man Utd signing PL striker among potential last-minute January Big Six loans

The Big Six could enter the loan market in the final days of the January window amid heightened desperation with Marcus Rashford to Arsenal among the potential deals…

                  Marcus Rashford to Arsenal
Having announced his intention to leave Man Utd before the winter window opened, Rashford may have expected to have a new club by now, but this saga looks likely to rumble on towards deadline day.

Rashford‘s poor performances and attitude over the past 18-plus months means football’s cream of the crop are no longer queueing up to sign the England international, while his huge salary is another sticking point for interested clubs.

Amid AC Milan favouring Kyle Walker and FC Barcelona reportedly having to ‘sacrifice’ players to seal a deal, the prospect of Rashford failing to get a move is becoming increasingly realistic as we near the transfer deadline.

Still, Premier League clubs could make a late swoop to save the day and Arsenal could do much worse than sign the Man Utd outcast.

Arsenal cannot allow their pursuit of a top-class striker to drag on beyond this summer and Gabriel Jesus’ injury could force Mikel Arteta to ‘bring forward’ his plans.

Rashford won’t be the answer to their No.9 problem, but he could add some much-needed firepower on the left flank with Gabriel Martinelli left in the shadows by Bukayo Saka, whose absence through injury has left the Gunners really short going forward.

                  Fikayo Tomori to Chelsea
Earlier in the season, we all got prematurely excited as Chelsea looked primed to mount an unexpected challenge for the Premier League title. Expectations have been tempered of late as Monday night’s much-needed 3-1 victory against Wolves ended their five-match winless Premier League run.

This result leaves the Blues two points above Manchester City and in the Champions League places. Should they maintain this position, Enzo Maresca’s debut season would be considered a success as his youthful side were never expected to fight for the title this season.

Jamie Carragher’s fear that they are still a couple of players short from winning the Premier League is proving true as they are crying out for an upgrade on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and a new centre-back.

These issues are unlikely to be remedied this month, though their injury woes at centre-back could be eased with the return of Tomori.

Hindsight being 20/20, Chelsea should never have let the England international leave for AC Milan in the summer 2021 as his performances in his 162 appearances for the Serie A giants warrant more than just five senior caps for his country.

Despite this, a return to England is being mooted this month with Newcastle United interested after they missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer. Chelsea should try to beat their rivals to the signing if a loan-to-buy deal becomes an option as Tomori would immediately become one of Maresca’s starting centre-backs.

                  Ben Chilwell to Liverpool
Given the remarkable start to Arne Slot’s tenure at Liverpool, it’s hardly surprising that it was tough to pick a suitable loan signing for the Premier League and Champions League leaders.

Though their position domestically and in Europe may suggest otherwise, not everything is rosy at Anfield. There is the small matter of three of their best players being out of contract in 2025 and a couple of key stars approaching (or already in) a decline pre-retirement.

Even if Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold (he’s the least likely to stick around, obviously), Liverpool still need to be busy in the summer to make up for their inactivity in this season’s transfer windows.

Most of Liverpool’s players have improved under Slot, but fallen Premier League great Andy Robertson has lost it; he is comfortably the weak link in this Liverpool team.

Liverpool have already found their long-term replacement for Alisson Becker and finding Robertson’s successor needs to be next on FSG’s to-do list with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez a prime candidate.

With Bournemouth flying, Liverpool may need to wait until the summer to sign Kerkez. For now, Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell could be a handy short-term solution to strengthen their Premier League and Champions League hopes. Similarly to Robertson, the injury-prone defender has declined, but the added competition alone could get more out of their struggling Scotsman.

                  Douglas Luiz to Manchester City
Pep Guardiola admitted that the Premier League holders should have made more signings last summer
. This could have reduced the severity of their pre-New Year woes as their title hopes ended before the halfway point of the season.

Rodri-less Man City suddenly look incredibly ordinary after years of excellence and Guardiola admitted before this window that fresh faces are needed to freshen up his spent squad.

Man City have not messed around; they have carried this window as the imminent arrival of Omar Marmoush is likely to take their January spending past £130m.

More signings are possible post-Marmoush as they need to sign a defensive midfielder to cover for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who is not scheduled to return before the end of this season.

Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes were mooted as potential targets before the re-signing of former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz on loan became a possibility.

Luiz was one of the standout performers in the Premier League last season but he’s struggled following his surprise move to Juventus. He’s unlikely to be needed once Rodri is back, but a short-term loan could be ideal for all parties as Man City ease their midfield issues and a player in desperate need of minutes gets some game time.

READ: Manchester City crisis renewed in cataclysmic defeat which leaves them on Champions League brink

                  Evan Ferguson to Manchester United
There were expected to be plenty of outgoings from Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim’s rebuild takes shape, but there’s been a lot of talk and not much action from INEOS so far.

United’s reported ‘tight’ budget makes life difficult for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recruitment team, though the potential pure profit sale of Alejandro Garnacho would provide them funds to make a couple of signings before the window closes.

Amorim lacks a natural left wing-back without always-injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia nearing an exit, so, understandably, his first marquee signing could be a player to fill this position.

Leece’s Patrick Dorgu appears to be Amorim’s man following Garnacho’s exit; the latter deal could also enable Man Utd to bring in a much-needed attacking option, albeit only on loan.

Earlier in the window, Man Utd were credited with interest in Randal Kolo Muani, though that ship sailed. Instead, they could make a move for long-term target Ferguson.

A mix of injuries and a slump in form has damaged Ferguson’s reputation, but the 20-year-old (or Liam Delap, perhaps) is still arguably the young Premier League striker with the highest ceiling. Taking a risk in this window could reap rewards further down the line for Man Utd as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are not doing enough to make the No.9 spot their own.

                  Dusan Vlahovic to Tottenham Hotspur
15th-placed Tottenham’s ongoing slump leaves Ange Postecoglou as the clear favourite
to be the next Premier League manager sacked (he could go to Leeds United if things continue to go awry in north London).

At least there are mitigating factors for Postecoglou to hang his hat on, with Spurs ravaged by injuries more than most in the Premier League this season.

Tottenham’s injury headaches mean their league position is not a true reflection of their capabilities and in a fresh blow, Dominic Solanke is set to be out for a few weeks.

Even before Solanke’s injury, Spurs challenged Man Utd and Juventus for Kolo Muani, so they could be tempted to re-enter the striker market if a tempting proposition arises.

One such option could be Vlahovic as Juventus are reportedly open to getting him off their wage bill. Long-term suitors Arsenal are among those interested, but Spurs have also been keen on the Serbia international, who could be one to watch once Kolo Muani’s anticipated move to Juventus is finalised.

Ruben Amorim bemoans ‘bad decisions’ and ‘lost control’ but Man Utd ‘did well’ in Rangers win

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes his players improved against Rangers in their 2-1 Europa League win on Thursday.

Amorim’s side took the lead in the second half when Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland punched the ball into his own goal when attempting to deal with an inswinging corner.

Substitute Cyriel Dessers equalised with a beautiful late strike but Man Utd instantly bounced back through Bruno Fernandes, whose 92nd-minute strike earned the Red Devils three points in the Europa League.

Victory puts Man Utd up to fourth in the league phase, while Rangers dropped from eighth to 13th.

The Premier League side are all but through to the last 16 and travel to Romania to face FCSB on the final matchday next week.

Rangers host Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise with automatic qualification still possible, but now pretty unlikely.

After nabbing a point from them on Thursday, Man Utd now have to do the Scottish giants a favour against eighth-place FCSB.

As they tend to, the Red Devils underwhelmed but probably did deserve the victory against Philippe Clement’s side.

Amorim’s side remain unbeaten in Europe this season and the Portuguese believes his players improved on the ball but was disappointed at Matthijs de Ligt’s disallowed goal for a soft push on Gers centre-back Robin Propper.

“We did well,” he told TNT Sports after the 2-1 win at Old Trafford. “We played better with the ball.

“I think we started well and then we lost control of the game because of some bad decisions but the lads did well. We are so near the second goal with so many chances, it’s so hard but they recover.

“We are not playing our best but we regrouped from the last game. I know the opponent is different. It wasn’t as fast. You can see the connections. I think we need to be more clinical in the right moments because that can help us a lot.

“It’s two weeks free to prepare for the Premier League (if they finish top eight) so it’s really important to stay in this position.

“We started the game scoring first, that is important. You can see that in Europe, it is quite different. We scored the first one and in the Premier League, it is not a foul.”

De Ligt was substituted for Harry Maguire at half-time and Amorim said he came off as a precaution, as did Leny Yoro in the second half.

“He felt something in his leg. Also, Leny so we cannot risk anything. We have to win but we have to protect the players and show that everyone matters in this moment,” he confirmed.

Amorim also said “I don’t know what will happen” when asked about new signings in the January transfer window, though he did admit “anything can happen”.

Match-winner Bruno Fernandes expressed the importance of finishing in the top eight to avoid two playoff matches contributing to a busy schedule in February

He told TNT Sports: “I know how much it means for the fans to win games. You really want to win games.

“We are a little bit frustrated because we started the year well here with two great games against Liverpool and Arsenal then Southampton we had good resilience but didn’t play good football. We had the game with Brighton which didn’t go for us.

“We want to get through the Europa League and get to the final in Bilbao. We want to get top eight so we don’t have to play two more games.

“It’s not about the character. We have to prove that in the 90 minutes, we can’t bring that out when we concede a goal. We concede a late goal and we have to score a late goal.

“At this club, you need to win every game. You know that if you don’t win games here, it will be difficult. I hope our fans never get used to losing games. I hope they believe in this team to win games.”

94% pass accuracy, 100% dribbles completed, only 1 ground duel lost: United star shows he is ready for the step-up

Late drama ensued at Old Trafford on Thursday as Manchester United clinched all three points courtesy of a 2-1 win against Rangers in their Europa League group stage encounter thanks to an added-time winner from Bruno Fernandes.

All three goals came in the second-half with the hosts taking the lead after a howler from former United loanee Jack Butland in the Rangers goal.

Just like when it seemed that the match was meandering to a close, Cyriel Dessers managed to equalise in the 88th minute, sending the away fans into delirium.

But that joy did not last long as the skipper stunned the Rangers supporters into silence, popping up to score from a half-volley in the second minute of extra time.

Collyer was nice and tidy on the ball

Ruben Amorim will not be pleased with the number of chances missed but will be pleased with the display of academy graduate Toby Collyer, who got his first start for the team in an European competition.

The 21-year-old was nervous in the beginning as his misplaced pass almost led to the first big chance for the visitors but he gradually grew into the game and looked quite confident on the ball as time wore on.

The former England U17 international had 57 touches and ended the game with an impressive 94 percent passing accuracy, successfully finding a teammate with 48 out of 51 passes.

The former Brighton starlet also completed both his dribbles and lost possession of the ball only four times (all stats via sofascore).

He kept things simple and ticking over, just what the head coach would have wanted from his defensive midfielder. And Collyer was his usual aggressive self out of possession.

                      More chances in the pipeline

The Worthing-born star lost only one ground duel in his 73 minutes, and also won one free-kick after being fouled by a Rangers player. The midfielder also completed two interceptions.

It is clear to see that Amorim likes the youngster, with Collyer making an appearance in each of the club’s last four games, after he impressed with his cameo off the bench against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The head coach has refrained from using Casemiro and opted to use the academy graduate instead, which shows how highly rated he is. And the club have also performed a U-turn and cancelled a loan exit as the coach wants him here,

And more chances are expected with both the Brazilian and Christian Eriksen unlikely to be around at the club for much longer.

Collyer’s energy, drive and determination makes him a handy bench option to come in and replace either of Manuel Ugarte or Kobbie Mainoo should the need arise.
