“United gave their blessing”: Amorim’s first January signing will be in action on Friday – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim had identified wingback as a position that needed urgent reinforcements as soon as he stepped into the hot seat.

He got his wish as INEOS completed a deal for Lecce’s highly-rated wingback Patrick Dorgu for an initial fee of only €30 million, less than what was being written in the media.

The Dane’s medical, which was initially slated for Thursday, was shifted to Saturday and now Talksport have revealed that Lecce will include him in their matchday squad for Friday’s test against Parma.

United have given their blessings for the defender to play his last game for the Italian side on Friday and he will travel to Manchester for his medical on Saturday.

Dorgu will play his final Lecce game

“Manchester United have granted Lecce’s request to name Patrick Dorgu in their squad for one last time on Friday night.

“talkSPORT understands United gave their blessing for this – and the Denmark international will now fly to Manchester on Saturday to undergo his Red Devils medical.”

Given Lecce are fighting to preserve their Serie A status, head coach Marco Giampaolo is focussing on the game at hand instead of thinking about the player’s future.

“As of today, he’s a Lecce player, so he is called up and will travel for the game,” Giampaolo was quoted as saying during the pre-match press conference.

    Medical on Saturday

Dorgu will not start the game and will be on the bench but should Giampaolo require him to save the game, he might be called upon later in the game.

While Lecce fans would get to bid their star goodbye, it is not the most prudent call from a United perspective. The Red Devils cannot afford a last-minute injury given their pressing need for the Denmark international.

Diogo Dalot, despite his goal against FCSB, is not the perfect wingback while Amorim has already conceded that Luke Shaw will take more time to return to action.

Hopefully, he remains unscathed and joins up with his new teammates as soon as possible. While the Crystal Palace game will come too soon for him , the FA Cup tie against Leicester City might be the first time fans get to watch him in action.

United set to announce first January signing imminently after player passed his medical today – report

Manchester United are on the brink of finalising the signing of Arsenal youngster Aydan Heaven ahead of the February 3 transfer deadline.

It recently emerged that Heaven is set to follow in the footsteps of Chido Obi-Martin, who also turned down a contract offer to remain at Arsenal, in favour of sealing a switch to Old Trafford.

United warded off significant competition from the likes of Barcelona and Eintracht Frankfurt to land the Hale End academy product.

Bundesliga giants were also credited with an interest in the player.

Earlier today, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano relayed that Heaven had arrived in Manchete to “complete formal steps” of his move to the club.

Now, the relatively reliable Manchester_United-Youth X account has given an update indicating that Heaven has successfully passed his medical.

An announcement of Heaven’s arrival is also imminent.

It’s believed that Heaven is not an academy signing and will instantly be part of the first team. United view him as a backup to Lisandro Martinez.

The 18-year-old was part of Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the United States last summer and even started the game against United at SoFi Stadium in July.

He performed well, bouncing back from losing an early duel against Rasmus Hojlund, who opened the scoring in the 10th minute of proceedings.

Heaven will depart the Emirates Stadium having made just one senior appearance when he came on as a substitute in October’s 3-0 EFL Cup victory over Preston North End.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta named him on the bench for several other Premier League and Champions League matches.

Premier League clubs bring ‘tactical nuclear weapon to knife fight’ in Europe

It’s supposed to be a TV column but John Nicholson cannot help but get angry about the financial disparity ignored by broadcasters…

A new seven days of football begins for me on Friday with a glance at the EFL coverage of the Sheffield United v Hull game. Emma Saunders is a comfortable watch with regulars Curtis Davies and Neil Warnock, who is a sometimes garrulous but always warm presence with what feels like genuine affection for all levels of football and a load of anecdotes to share.

But I fancy going German and the Wolfsburg v Holstein Kiel game is buried deep on Sky, which takes the world feed for commentary with Kevin Hatchard and Patrick Owomoyela, a former right-back for Hamburg and Dortmund amongst others. I do like English spoken with a German accent. Ralph Hasenhüttl is the manager of Wolfsburg, who play in two shades of vivid green.

Their commentary style is very conversational and informational, which is just what you need if you’re not a Bundesliga expert. Compared to last week’s Coisty and Rio blether, it’s Masters degree standard and didn’t include any sectarian singing, which went unmentioned at Old Trafford in a bit of a ‘don’t tarnish the product boys’ move.

Kiel are second bottom but take the lead and it occurs to me how much better they are than second bottom of the Premier League Leicester City. It’s a great game, Wolfsburg dominated the second half and took the lead but Keil equalised with just their third shot on target

Saturday starts with the Schalke v Nuremberg game on YouTube in the German second tier. If the away team is resurgent, do they say “..and Nuremberg rally”…? Mark Bevan does the world feed, flying solo, as he often does. It’s nothing fancy, very much your buttered toast as opposed to a fondant fancy. Six years ago, Schalke were the 14th richest club in the world. They still average a huge 61,000 crowd. How fortunes change. They end up winning 3-1.

Purveyor of a special brand of euthanasia football, David Moyes, is interviewed on Soccer Saturday, looking like the manager of a social club in Shettleston, Glasgow, and seems surprised that he’s been given the Everton job.

Speaking of that show, the harrumphing and frankly immature response to the Arsenal red card was irresponsible. Football’s audience contains a fair amount of head-the-balls who will behave terribly at the slightest raised emotional environment. So they did and sent Michael Oliver death threats. Pundits should all be aware of the nutters and shut up, not stir the pot. Are ex-players thinking at all? They’re in a responsible position but behave like they are a pub blowhard who’s four pints in.

It wasn’t even completely not understandable. You’d think it was a human rights crime the way some frot themselves into a lather, feeding off the negativity. Shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre is no way to conduct yourself on TV. Think how your words will be received by the thin-skinned outrage merchants. You’re not just a bloke watching the game. You have more responsibility, so wake up and be responsible. I hope their directors have a word about it. It’d be grossly irresponsible not to.

READ: Arsenal fans and media must share blame for Michael Oliver death threats

Naturally, City v Chelsea didn’t beg mercy for their sins, so I watched Mönchengladbach v Bochum on Sky with Derek Rae, who I remember from Scottish football in the 80s when I lived on the Black Isle, north of Inverness, and when he was the 1987 British Sports Broadcaster of the Year. He was also with Patrick Owomoyela. An amiable broadcast and a strong, enjoyable game in pouring rain ends 3-0 to the home team.

We round off the day in the second tier in Germany for Hertha Berlin v Hamburg from Olympiastadion on YouTube. There are 614,000 subscribers to the Sky Sports football channel. How many people do you think watch this? It rises to an earth-shattering 1520 just before half-time. That is a very niche appeal indeed. Hertha average more than 48,000 for a second division game. Comms are from the world feed by Angus Torode with no co-comm. You never hear the solo commentator in British football and it’s a bit disconcerting at first but I grow to like its uncluttered simplicity. Nice to hear something done differently. The game is tight; Hertha come back from two nil to equalise but Hamburg score a late winner. Great game.

Sunday begins at AC Milan v Parma with Paul Dempsey and Adam Virgo at 11.30am, which is great as Milan come back to score two goals in added time and win 3-2, then crosses to Dundee and then to Crystal Palace – the less said about that game the better.

Like so many Premier League matches, it’s competitive but played at 100mph and littered with mistakes and as a result, exceptional or even basic skill is absent. I’d say it looks inseparable from a fourth-tier game but a fourth-tier game would be more exciting. The typical game in Italy and Germany and probably Spain too is far more enjoyable. Just many fewer tedious games like this. No one at Sky would admit this, obviously. Don’t diss the product. Annoying but understandable dishonesty.

The first half is such poor entertainment I don’t want to see anymore. Dreadful. As it finished 2-1 to Brentford, maybe it got better. So I make some spicy tomato soup and jump to Hoffenheim v Eintracht Frankfurt for some actual football, immediately noticing that everyone is less manic and faces are less twisted in stroppiness and angst. I don’t know why. My missus says it’s because they aren’t big pampered kidults. VAR is just as pathetic though.

There’s a nice half-time package about Frankfurt’s ever-changing forward line, in light of Omar Marmoush’s departure, with Frenchman Hugo Ekitike a double scorer here, the next likely to be mined by the Premier League. They play some good stuff but in a tense finish, Hoffenheim deservedly score and it ends 2-2.

I ignored Villa v West Ham on the grounds of taste but my missus notes that Jamie looked like he’s just woken up, which is probably true. The Fulham v Man United late game hardly says ‘watch me’. Stroke fatigue means I have to have a nap but I’m back in the saddle for kick-off.

Darren Fletcher is the commentator and his non-hysterical enthusiasm is welcome, as are Lucy Ward’s flat tones. They converse well as the football goes through a really dull, boring, uneventful phase and it’s actually too uneventful to hold my attention and if it improves, it’s already lost me. How do the players get so much money for this? Why do broadcasters pay so much for it?

READ: Premier League broadcasters think we will watch any old sh*te…

I succumb to the charms of Lazio v Fiorentina and a sizzling atmosphere compared to Fulham at the Stadio Olimpico. Ex-Leeds man Tony Dorigo is with Adam Summerton and I like him. Very chatty and informative, as is the commentator. They sound like two pals talking over a pint while watching the game. David De Gea is in goal for La Viola.

They started brilliantly and took a two-goal lead in 15 minutes but Lazio scored in added time, making for a great frantic, chaotic last four minutes and a goal-saving save from De Gea. Both managers were sent off and with the last kick of the game, Lazio hit the inside of the post. Absolutely thrilling stuff, everything Fulham wasn’t.

Tuesday’s Soccer Special features more pointless wrangling over the Arsenal red card, more tedious arguing to absolutely no point or conclusion. Someone had obviously had a word. Merse has been allowed out at night and tries to make a point of not blaming Michael Oliver but that horse has bolted and should have been said immediately. He calls the Europa League the Europa Cup for some reason. He must know that’s not its name. Dean Ashton seems to be a rational human.

On Wednesday we’re on TNT for the Goals Show and the last round of Champions League games, which they’re trying to whip up into a frenzy. They seem to think the inclusion of Coisty is some sort of magic bullet for popularity, so heavily is it trailed in the preceding week. All games were broadcast live to literally some people who waited with bated breath to see who would suffer the jeopardy of not being knocked out quite yet and would have to play two more games. Nine clubs were already out and were just playing for positional prize money. The Corinthian spirit, eh.

And who would fail to qualify for the play-offs? Turns out exactly who you thought would. UEFA will have breathed a sigh of relief. We all wanted the gurning zombie that is City and the nation state of PSG to fail, but of course they didn’t. So the much vaunted jeopardy didn’t manifest itself. But look! Man City or Real Madrid won’t get past the play-offs! Don’t mention that if it was a knockout tournament from the start, every match would have jeopardy, but less money, and that’s much more important to the rich, who can never earn enough.

Still, some of the league had something to play for, even if it was to avoid the threat of having to play more football. How odd that we’ve arrived at a format that punishes or rewards a level of success by playing twice more. Oh no, not more football, we don’t want that. Or maybe we do? Which is it? It’s not clear as some delight in a top-24 place yet for others it’s a humiliation. What do you mean, you don’t care? Not even if Coisty tells you? No? TNT and UEFA will be disappointed you haven’t bought their lies about it being thrilling.

I note people saying teams up to 24th have ‘qualified’. Yes, qualified to play a two-legged play-off game, which sounds less of an achievement. They’re trying to make out it’s complicated, I don’t know why – possibly to aggrandise it – A Night Like No Other is their milky tagline, notably avoiding any hostages to fortune. It’s actually really straightforward if you can add up.

Needless to say, the financial disparity between teams is dishonestly not mentioned by anyone but it seems important when it’s so extreme; quite often one whole team costs less than one other team’s player. It’s an important aspect, whatever the result. There’s no point in pretending these are even match-ups. Unfairness is baked in. Still, ignore that, feel the tension, eh. Despite zero tension, it was fun to see all the teams going up and down, even if it did all end up as predicted.

That said, when you discount all the false ‘tension’ in most matches, flicking around 18 games is a lot of fun. I enjoyed James Horncastle’s half-time ‘there’s blood in the water at the Etihad’ comment. Seemed just right. One thing it accidentally proves is that Our League doesn’t have a monopoly on good football and great goals, despite what some would have you believe. Forget that, the Premier League blinkers will be back on at the weekend.

READ: Man City won’t win the Champions League; they’ve had their time like Novak Djokovic

Thursday saw them do it all again for the Europa League, which is so warped by Premier League finances, it’s barely a competition at all and relies on the Premier League team having a meltdown, when they are enjoying ten times the resources to make it competitive. The jeopardy, such as it is, is whether someone will blow their massive advantage. Or in common parlance, ‘do a Spurs’.

Obviously this isn’t mentioned at all and everyone pretends the Premier League hasn’t brought a tactical nuclear weapon to a knife fight. In fact, my sense is it would be regarded as sour miserablism to do so, so endemic is the English dishonesty.

For example Spurs are playing IF Elfsborg whose total market value Transfermrket puts at 26.85 million Euro while Spurs’ market value is 794.10 million. It’s about resources, even if the players actually cost less than that, even allowing for injuries. I’d wager Spurs academy spends more than the Swedish first team.

Their financial dominance affects everything from depth of playing resources to quality and extent of physiotherapy. Unless Spurs are drunk or have been eating tequila worms, the Swedes don’t even have a puncher’s chance; if they did, money means less than nothing.

Their most highly valued player is Timothy Noor Ouma who is a central midfielder valued at three million Euro. Even with all the injuries, Spurs players are valued more highly than that by some measure.

The anti-competitive nature built into the competitions can’t be ignored. It isn’t a marginal issue. Man Utd play FCSB – that’s 774 million v 40. In the Conference, Chelsea are top with a one billion valuation, the second place is Vitória S.C valued at 48 million. Even Athletic Bilbao, the next most valuable team in the Europa, is only valued at 354 million Euros, under half of a Premier League team. The gap in resources available is unfathomably vast. Whichever figures you want to judge it by, their dominance is huge.

It’s a sign of how overvalued the Premier League is that they don’t win every game 8-0. Seriously, if you were any of the other clubs, it must seem ridiculous even being asked to compete. But shut up about it, eh. Pretend they’re all quite equal. It also shows how poor our teams are if they don’t always win the Europa or Conference or even find it difficult to beat a side valued at 750 million less.

Don Hutchison, Joe Cole and James Horncastle are with Matt Smith and provide decent game talk. It seems strange for no one to even go near any financial issues at all. Why ignore it so comprehensively? Is it too political? But if not here, then where? I mean it is obviously a factor in the performance of teams. Disappointing but predictable.

There are some superb goals. Anderlecht v Hoffenheim was especially good. And watching them all go in was great. Interesting to see Robbie Keane as the boss of Hungary’s Ferencváros win 4-3. Teams fall in and out of positions. Rangers did well. Of course were it the UEFA Cup and knockout from the start, tension and jeopardy would be innate all the time, in every game, not just on one day. But we don’t mention that. I enjoyed it though, not sure overall if it was better than before, plenty of issues need addressing, but the last day was undeniably fun.

Man Utd have already secured the signing of Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with their fortunate 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday moving them up one place to 12th in the table.

Man Utd have only won eight of their 23 Premier League matches this term and Ruben Amorim has been feeling the pressure in recent weeks.

The Man Utd boss has also taken a strict stance on players who don’t give their all in training with Amorim making an example of Marcus Rashford by omitting him from all but one squad since their Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzen in mid-December.

And Amorim admitted on Sunday that he would rather play his goalkeeping coach over Rashford if he continues to give less than 100 per cent in training sessions.

The new Man Utd head coach is looking to bring in players who can thrive in his 3-4-3 system and feel comfortable with his playing style and philosophy.

And now reports in Portuguese newspaper A Bola claim that Man Utd ‘have already snapped up’ Sporting CP winger Quenda ahead of the summer.

It is claimed that a transfer to Old Trafford is ‘assured’ and that the clubs ‘are preparing for a fee that could be in the region of 60 million euros (£50m)’.

The report in A Bola adds:

‘The English giant’s desire even predates the arrival of Ruben Amorim to coach the Premier League team in November, but the former Sporting coach , who launched Quenda into the green and whites’ first team, not only kept the red devils’ interest in the player alive but also sharpened it even more – not to the point of an attempt being made this January (although that possibility has been considered, even going against the promise made by the coach not to sign Alvalade this winter) but rather to grab him now so he can count on him from next season onwards.

‘Sporting is then preparing for a transfer fee that should be in the region of €60 million. Even if it is through a lower initial value but with certain variables and even a percentage of the transfer fee.’

However, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has cautioned excitement over the potential addition of Quenda with Man Utd yet to make a ‘formal offer’ for the 17-year-old.

          Ornstein revealed on Friday afternoon:

‘No formal offer has been made but United are looking into a move for the 17-year-old Portugal youth international, who turns 18 in April and is expected to cost around €40million (£33.4m, $41.5m).

‘A switch would reunite Quenda with United head coach Ruben Amorim, the pair having worked together before Amorim left Sporting for Old Trafford in November.

‘For now, though, United are prioritising business in the winter market ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline. Work on the next window will be stepped up subsequently.’

Euro giants fail with late €65m bid for striker long admired by United, INEOS could try for him next summer – report

Manchester United clinched an easy 2-0 win over FCSB on Thursday to guarantee direct progress through to the Europa League Round of 16.

More difficult challenges lie ahead, and as Ruben Amorim revealed at the end of the game, the team was not getting carried away with the result.

But despite the victory, Rasmus Hojlund once again drew a blank in front of goal and the Dane now has not scored in 12 games. The Portuguese needs help up front if he is to salvage what is left of the season.

Victor Osimhen has been heavily linked with the club for a few seasons now and those links re-emerged this January amid Napoli’s interest in United wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho.

            Osimhen on the market

There were talks of a swap deal or a discounted deal but as of now, with less than four days to go for the winter window to close, no update has been provided on that front.

The Nigerian is currently on loan at Galatasaray and the Turkish side are delighted with the 26-year-old’s impact with the striker netting 17 goals and registering five assists in 21 games so far this campaign.

And as revealed Corriere dello Sport, Gala have submitted a €65 million bid for the Nigeria international, which is reportedly €10 million less than his release clause.

As a result, Napoli have rejected the offer and want to wait until the summer as they are sure of receiving the full amount considering the number of teams interested in Osimhen.

            Gala fail with permanent bid

“Galatasaray have tried to buy Victor Osimhen. Right away, in this transfer window: an offer of 65 million euros to Napoli, 10 less than the value of the clause included in his contract and already active for the January transfer window, but De Laurentiis has kindly declined the offer.

“It goes without saying that the president prefers to wait until the summer in order to obtain the entire last sum established before the loan transfer to Turkey, having already reduced the clause from 120 to 75 million.”

Whether United return for the Napoli star in the summer remains to be seen. Osimhen seems happy in Turkey and he might prefer staying at Gala should they up their bid in June.

Most reports have indicated Amorim’s preference for his Sporting Lisbon protege Viktor Gyokeres. Despite a lot of interest in the Swede, United remain favourites for his signature.

David Ornstein confirms United are homing in on Amorim’s favourite generational talent, £33m will seal the deal

Manchester United are pursuing a move in the summer for Sporting Lisbon attacker Geovany Quenda, David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed.

Earlier today, a report from Portugal claimed that United have agreed a €60m deal to sign Quenda in the summer.

It was stated that the transfer is “assured” to go through and Quenda will seal a switch to Old Trafford in a few month’s time.

Amorim is looking to recruit players who fit into his preferred 3-4-3 system and Quenda is deemed as the ideal player to slot into the right-wing-back role.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both been deployed at right-wing-back but neither have really thrived on that part of the pitch. Amad Diallo has shown the most promise there but it appears Amorim is more keen on using the Ivorian in an advanced midfield role.

Now, Ornstein has confirmed that United are indeed pursuing Quenda ahead of the summer transfer window but nothing has been agreed yet.

Ornstein also notes that the 17-year-old is valued at significantly lower than the €60m that was initially reported.

“Manchester United are exploring a deal to sign winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in the summer.”

“No formal offer has been made but United are looking into a move for the 17-year-old Portugal youth international, who turns 18 in April and is expected to cost around €40million (£33.4m, $41.5m).”

It’s understood that at the moment, United are fully focused on business before deadline day on February 3 but transfer planning for the summer will begin soon.

United are back in action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. Kick-off is at 14:00 GMT.

“Nothing had changed:” insiders reveal the persisting issue that is still sabotaging United’s transfer plans

It appears that Manchester United co-owner Joel Glazer is still actively involved in guiding the club’s transfer strategy despite his apparent distancing from day-to-day operations.

Since purchasing a minority stake in the club, INEOS have assumed control of Man United’s football operations, appointing a whole new leadership team, including CEO Omar Berrada and Technical Director Jason Wilcox. Of course, there was also the arrival of manager Ruben Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag earlier this season.

Aside from changing personnel, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team have also been behind an array of controversial financial decisions, which include halting funding to the Association of Former Manchester United Players as well as raising Old Trafford ticket prices.

At the end of 2024, United fans couldn’t be blamed for feeling frustrated after Amorim indicated that a transfer spending spree in January would not be likely.

But while many may feel the need to blame INEOS for the recent lack of signings, an inside source revealed that there is another culprit who has also been steering the ship behind the scenes.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Joel Glazer is still actively involved in United’s transfer plans.

“Sources have confirmed that Glazer retains the right to sign off and veto deals even though Sir Jim Ratcliffe assumed control of the club’s football operations with his 27.7% minority stake last season,” the report read.

“Glazer is still the United co-chairman along with his brother, Avram, and has been described as “more hands-on” during the club’s negotiations in the winter transfer window. A United source said Glazer hs always been involved and that nothing had changed.”

While the Glazers have been highly unpopular among the United fanbase since assuming control in 2005, Joel, in particular, is a controversial figure to lead the club’s transfer strategy.

“Joel has not been seen at a United home game since the 2019 Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona,” the article reminded, although “the club claimed he was in attendance for the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last year.”

While the club had a busy transfer window last summer, signing Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee, it appears as if January may be a letdown.

Aside from left-back Patrick Dorgu, whose medical at United has been delayed, there has been no concrete transfer activity at Old Trafford this January despite the clear need for reinforcements in numerous positions.

Striker Mathys Tel is another potential signing, with United reportedly contacting Bayern Munich over a loan deal. Still, there is no guarantee that the deal will progress beyond the initial talks.

While January may be a disappointing transfer window, it appears that INEOS should not shoulder the entire blame for a lack of business. Once again, the Glazers seem to have a role in United’s lack of progress.

Amorim says key player who was “not comfortable” became “very happy on the pitch” yesterday vs FCSB

Ruben Amorim says Kobbie Mainoo is finding his feet in the new boss’ system.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, Amorim was first asked about Alejandro Garnacho’s improvement under him and responded:

“I think he’s not improving under me [because of me]. He changed right away from that game [against] City [when he was not in the squad]. The way he understands things and understands that I just want to help him, I just want to win games.

“He understands that [criticism] is never in a bad way. It’s always for him. I think all of the merit goes to Garnacho. He’s improving and we want to continue to improve with him. In the game he understood the position, the moment when to play inside and outside, and the connection with Diogo Dalot, that’s improving a lot, too.”

The next question was about Mainoo.

“Everyone in England sees him as a very, very good player,” he said.

“He went to the Euro finals. It’s more the position, he’s not comfortable. The key point is the position.

“Against FCSB, in No10, Kobbie felt more happy to play. I felt it watching him, he was so happy on the pitch, and that is important for me, because if the players are happy they play better.”

In discussing having to sell academy stars such as Garnacho and Mainoo to strengthen the team, the head coach said:

“That part is true [clubs being able to raise money by selling Academy players] but I want players like Kobbie and Garnacho. The focus is that we have to improve our Academy and you have to bring more.

“To play, to feel the shirt, but also to sell them. Our focus is to bring more [through].”

Amorim was also asked when Luke Shaw would be back in the squad, having returned to training.

“I think he needs to train more, to spend more time with his team-mates playing even like normal, small-sided games, not just working alone,” he replied.

“He stayed there [at Carrington] to make a different type of work, he’s going to get together with the team when we arrive and start from there. When I feel it is the right moment, we will start with some minutes in the games.”

He was then asked if a loan for Tyrell Malacia was being considered.

                  “We will see,” he said.

“What I know is that it’s really hard on Malacia. A long time without playing and then it’s hard to make a lot of games and a player like him, he’s a full-back, and sometimes in this system – he played in the national team outside and inside – it’s hard for him because he’s not so offensive and he can play like one of the three defenders if we have more possession and more control of the games.

“So, it’s really a difficult context for him but he’s our player and we are going to help him.”

Romano reveals Arsenal are ‘ones to watch’ for Tel despite Tottenham and Man Utd claims

Fabrizio Romano insists Arsenal are still the ‘ones to watch’ in the race to sign Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel despite Tottenham and Man Utd interest.

The Bayern Munich star is in demand with a number of clubs looking to sign the France Under-21 international before the transfer deadline.

Lots of Premier League clubs are looking for a new forward with Arsenal, Tottenham and Man Utd reportedly competing against each other for Tel.

Reports on Thursday claimed that Tottenham have made a bid of around €60m (£50m) for Tel with it now up to the Frenchman as to where he ends up.

Sky Germany reporter revealed earlier today that Man Utd are looking to hijack Tottenham’s bid with a possible loan deal until the end of the season.

Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘Understand that Manchester United have contacted FC Bayern regarding Mathys #Tel! #MUFC are interested in a loan deal and hope to buy some time regarding Tel since departures are needed (Garnacho/Rashford). ManUtd are definitely in the race, as exclusively revealed on Tuesday.

‘ManUtd and Bayern feeling that Tel is currently leaning towards a loan move, which is why he hasn’t committed to Tottenham yet. #COYS pushing for a decision as Tel is their desired target. Max Eberl: “Whether it will be a loan or a sale, we will discuss it in the coming days and hours.”‘

And now transfer expert Romano has declared Arsenal the ‘ones to watch’ in the Tel saga after the Gunners had a bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins turned down on Wednesday.

Romano told GiveMeSport: ‘In terms of strikers, there’s a crazy race ongoing for Mathys Tel, one of the most wanted strikers in Europe right now since he decided to leave Bayern.

‘Aston Villa are prepared to spend big and buy Tel, Tottenham already agreed on €60m (£50m) package with Bayern but they’re waiting for the player to decide with Chelsea remaining in the mix, while Arsenal could be one to watch until the end. Manchester United?

‘They’ve called for Tel, but are only open to a loan deal. It’s up to the French talent, who’s deciding with his agent and his family which project he prefers to pick.

‘Spurs and Arsenal will add one more attacking player in the final days, while Chelsea are also assessing options and in active talks looking for opportunities. Man United’s moves depend on Marcus Rashford or, eventually, Alejandro Garnacho.

‘For Rashford, there is still no financial space at Barcelona; it’d be his dream move, Marcus wants Spain as his next step but Barça can only make it happen if Ansu Fati changes his mind and decides to leave in the final days of the window, which is considered an unlikely scenario internally. Turkish clubs keep calling on a daily basis for Rashford, but there’s no green light at this stage.

‘No movements are expected at Paris Saint-Germain after they signed Kvaratskhelia. Duran was on their list but he’s no longer available and also Victor Osimhen is not planning for a January exit despite Galatasaray closing in on an Alvaro Morata loan deal from AC Milan, with the Italian side planning to get Santiago Gimenez deal done with Feyenoord in the next 24 hours. The strikers’ domino is absolutely on, with more than seven top clubs involved and big surprises to come.’

Marcus Rashford transfer ‘practically agreed’ with Man Utd as ‘ashamed’ star ‘sets deadline’ for deal

Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford has set Barcelona a deadline to do a loan deal before he entertains other options as the end of the transfer window approaches.

Rashford has only appeared in one matchday squad since the Red Devils beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 on December 12 after his shock omission in the Manchester Derby a few days later.

The England international insisted he was ready for a “new challenge” shortly after the 2-1 win over Man City and he’s been linked with a number of clubs ever since.

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Monaco, Marseille and some Premier League sides have all been credited with interest but Rashford seems no closer to a transfer than he did at the beginning of the month.

The Man Utd forward now risks being frozen out permanently if he remains with Ruben Amorim criticising him for his performances in training after the Red Devils beat Fulham 1-0 on Sunday.

Amorim left the door ajar for Rashford to remain at Man Utd with the Portuguese head coach insisting that he would “welcome a talent” like the Man Utd forward “if he changes.

The Man Utd boss said: “Our team should be so much better with Rashford, but Rashford has to change. If he changes, we would more than welcome a talent like Rashford – and we need him. We need goals, we need one against one, we need a threat.

“But in this moment, I think it’s really clear we have to set some standards, that’s all. We are waiting for Marcus if he wants it really, really bad. That’s the only thing. You try to make it something personal, but it’s not personal. It’s nothing against Marcus.

“I just have to make the same rules for everybody. That for me is so simple, it’s always the same message. We are a better team with Marcus Rashford, that is clear. He is a big talent. But until the right moment I will not change my mind.”

And now reports in Spain claim that Rashford ‘has made it clear that his priority is to wear the Barca shirt, but time is running out.’

The England international ‘does not want to be left without a team or spend the rest of the season in the dugout at United’ and a deal to move on loan to Barcelona is ‘practically agreed’.

The Catalan giants ‘need to get rid of some players to free up salary margin and be able to register him’ and if either Ansu Fati and Pablo Torre leave before the deadline then ‘Rashford would have a clear path to land in Barcelona’.

Barcelona are ‘working on the possibility of including a purchase option on the loan’ but Rashford has ‘already set a deadline’ as he looks to get the deal moving.

President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco see a possible deal for the Man Utd forward as ‘a unique opportunity’ and their goal is ‘to close an exit as soon as possible in order to bring in Rashford’.

Man Utd legend Roy Keane thinks Rashford “must be ashamed” of himself for not showing a “decent attitude” and facing a January exit from his boyhood club.

Keane said on the Stick To Football Podcast: “I can’t get involved in the conversation.

“I still can’t understand at any level – whatever’s going on with players leaving, months left on contracts – a player who doesn’t train properly.

“I don’t understand it; you might as well leave me out of this conversation.

“Especially if you think he wants to move, which is more of a reason to train properly so when you go to a new club you’re up to speed and when you leave the club at least you showed a decent attitude. He must be ashamed.”
