Chido Obi a constant threat, but United drop points for first time this season against rivals

Manchester United u18s took on Manchester City in the mini Manchester derby on Saturday morning at Carrington.

The clash was a battle of the top of the table with both sides going into it on a 11 match winning streak.

United had yet to drop a point in the league including a win over City on the opening matchday of the season, but City sat on top of the table by one point going into the weekend, having played an extra two matches.

The first big chance of the match came the way of United as Chido Obi took down a long ball on the chest expertly to push into space down the right side before delivering a low cutback to James Scanlon, who cannoned his shot off the crossbar.

It was the visitors who would open the scoring in the 21st minute though. A casual pass in the midfield was cut out by City who quickly hit on the counter, with a delicate through ball from Finlay Gorman evading Dan Armer’s interception to find Ryan McAidoo on the run to finish first time.

City controlled possession throughout the first half but were unable to create many clear chances, making it a tight encounter going into the break.

Meanwhile, United’s lack of penetration on the wings had started to become a detriment as City packed the central areas leaving United with little in the way of threat.

The second half started as badly as it could for United though, with City doubling their lead within the opening minute. A driving run from McAidoo saw him test Will Murdock, who parried the shot into the path of Reigan Heskey to tap in.

United’s rare chances came from the delivery of Harry Amass venturing forward. On one occasion he put in a peach of a cross for Obi, who couldn’t keep his header on target from close range.

United enjoyed a short spell in the second half which saw Scanlon hit the back of the net but it was quickly ruled out for offside.

Tyler Fletcher then had his chance cleared off the line after he looked to scramble in from close range following a corner.

City made United pay for their missed chances, extending their lead in the 65th minute from a corner of their own as Stephen Mfuni rose highest to head home.

Luca Fletcher rounded out the scoring to make it 0-4 to City after United failed to clear following an initial good save from Murdock.

With the match all but over, Obi came close to scoring a consolation. He shrugged off his marker, who almost pulled down his shorts in the process, burst past another two defenders and struck the left post.

Obi continued the fight to the final whistle, including getting into a physical altercation with former United and Arsenal player Harrison Parker which saw both yellow carded.

It wasn’t meant to be for United on the day though, dropping points for the first time in the league this season. Adam Lawrence’s side now turn their attention to the Premier League Cup as they continue their title defence against West Ham on Tuesday.

“Already said yes”: Garnacho transfer reaches its conclusion as Napoli close in on winger – Fabrizio Romano

Owing to PSR concerns, Manchester United were open to moving on academy graduates this window as their sales constitute pure profit.

While Marcus Rashford seemed the most obvious candidate since he publicly revealed his desire to leave, his humongous wages meant a permanent exit was off the cards in January.

Which is why INEOS took the bold call to place both Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo up for sale and the Argentine has received a great deal of attention this winter.

Napoli were the most interested party, but saw multiple bids rejected by the Red Devils. They informed the English side that the maximum they would pay for the 20-year-old was €55 million while United were hoping to earn a lot more.

      Napoli have finally moved on

The Serie A giants moved on to other targets like Karim Adeyemi but faced defeat on that front as well and with United refusing to lower their demands, it seems they have finally moved on for good.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Antonio Conte’s side are now looking at Allan Saint-Maximin to replace Kvicha Kvaratshkhelia.

The 27-year-old is on loan at Fenerbahce from Saudi Pro League side m Al-Ahli and the winger has give his green signal and talks are taking place regarding a loan termination and a permanent move to Naples.

“Napoli have been working on Allan Saint-Maximin deal again tonight, while Al Ahli and Fenerbahçe are discussing the loan termination.

      Chelsea still in the race

“Saint-Maximin already said yes to Napoli and more contacts will take place later today,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

With Napoli out of the picture, only Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur remain in the picture.

The Argentina international is unlikely to entertain thoughts of moving to North London and INEOS have slapped a £80 million price tag for the Blues in a bid to avoid strengthening a direct domestic rival.

Ruben Amorim has come out and profusely praised the United No 17 and has made it clear to the board that he does not want to lose his services in this window. Hopefully now INEOS will heed his call.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 18 year old was left out of Bayern’s squad for their match today and is currently weighing his options alongside his family and representatives.

        — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) February 1, 2025

Yesterday, we covered Florian Plettenberg’s exclusive story regarding United’s direct contact with Bayern over Tel.

The Red Devils are interested in a loan deal with a buy option and hope to secure the young forward while managing potential squad departures, including speculation surrounding Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Arsenal have also explored the possibility of signing Tel.

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl acknowledged the ongoing discussions, stating:

“Whether it will be a loan or a sale, we will discuss it in the coming days and hours.”

While Tel has shown promise in his appearances for Bayern, regular playing time has been hard to come by, making a temporary move an attractive option for all parties involved.

The Bundesliga’s official website has drawn comparisons between Mathys Tel and Kylian Mbappé, highlighting their similar career trajectories and playing styles.

Like Mbappé, Tel emerged as a highly touted prospect before turning seventeen and possesses the same explosive pace and dribbling ability.

His versatility has seen him deployed across the frontline and even in midfield, adapting to different roles.

Whether playing as a winger in a 4-3-3 system or leading the line as a centre-forward, Tel has demonstrated the adaptability and raw talent that makes him one of France’s most exciting young prospects.

The final decision now rests with the player, with time running out as the transfer window nears its conclusion.

Liverpool in Man Utd transfer hijack to steal £50m Amorim favourite ‘snapped up’ as first summer signing

According to reports, Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon starlet Geovany Quenda this summer.

Ruben Amorim left Sporting Lisbon to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd towards the end of 2024.

Following this move, the Red Devils have been heavily linked with Sporting Lisbon’s standout talents.

In November, Amorim said he “won’t be signing Sporting Lisbon players in January”, but this does not cover the upcoming summer window and the Premier League giants are reportedly targeting Quenda.

Amorim handed the 17-year-old winger his senior debut for Sporting Lisbon and he’s already made 33 appearances for his boyhood club.

The Portugal U21 international is perfect for Amorim’s system. This season, he’s mostly played at right wing-back and can also play on the left. He has two goals and six assists this season.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

On Friday afternoon, a report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed Man Utd are ‘exploring a move’ to sign Quenda.

‘Manchester United are exploring a deal to sign winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in the summer.

‘No formal offer has been made but United are looking into a move for the 17-year-old Portugal youth international, who turns 18 in April and is expected to cost around €40million (£33.4m, $41.5m). There is also interest from other clubs and no negotiations have taken place so far, just conversations.’

A report from Portuguese outlet A Bola claimed Man Utd have already ‘snapped up’ Quenda with a transfer worth around £50m ‘prepared’.

As alluded to by Ornstein, this report is proving premature and several clubs remain in the race to sign the talented teenager.

A new report in Portugal claims Liverpool are ‘well positioned’ to steal Quenda, while there’s also been ‘regular informal talks’ with Man City.

It is noted that Quenda us yet to decide his preferred destination, but he wants to join the Premier League and there are expected to be ‘concrete offers’ from Liverpool, Man Utd and Man City.

In better news for Man Utd, they have confirmed the arrival of 18-year-old Ayden Heaven from Arsenal on a deal until 2029.

“There is so much that I want to achieve in the game, I’ll be giving everything to continue my development and become the best player that I can be.”

Technical director Jason Wilcox said: “We are delighted that Ayden has joined Manchester United. He is already an extremely talented defender who is ready to join our first team squad in order to maximise his development.”

Aston Villa’s loan deal for Marcus Rashford is close to agreement on all sides – David Ornstein

Aston Villa are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Manchester United over a loan deal for Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has not featured in any of United’s last 12 games across all competitions, having fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

He was named on the bench for the club’s defeat at the hands of Newcastle on December 30 but was an unused substitute. He has continued to be excluded from the matchday squad since.

After United’s 1-0 win over Fulham last Sunday, Amorim claimed he would rather play the club’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach ahead of Rashford.

Amorim later struck a more conciliatory tone, suggesting that he could consider reinstating Rashford but only if he changes his ways.

A number of outfits both within and outside Europe have expressed interest but the finances involved have proved to be a hindrance.

On Friday, it came out that Aston Villa had entered talks with United over a late deal for Rashford ahead of the February 3 deadline and now, The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Laurie Whitwell have given an update.

According to the newspaper, Villa are close to striking an agreement with United for Rashford.

“Significant progress has been made though, with Villa moving to sort the financial terms, looking to satisfy United on salary coverage, and convince the player. The chance to play in the Champions League is an appeal for Rashford, with Unai Emery fully behind the approach. It is believed an option to buy will be agreed with Villa.”

“Villa are set to cover a significant portion of the forward’s wage alongside offering performance-related bonuses.”

“Villa manager Emery personally requested the club enter talks over Rashford as he is a big fan of the England international, whom he thinks is one of the world’s most dangerous attacking players, and believes he can help him recapture his best form.”

Rashford’s contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028.

The 27-year-old has made 426 appearances for United since breaking into the team in 2016. He has scored 138 goals in that period.

Man Utd transfer: Spurs submit ‘shock enquiry’ in ‘late move’ to hijack Chelsea with ‘swap deal alive’

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils are looking to offload a couple of pricey talents before the January transfer window closes as they need to raise funds for a huge rebuild.

United’s dire start to the 2024/25 season has opened the door for pretty much their entire squad to leave if they receive a suitable offer and Garnacho is arguably the most likely to leave.

Garnacho would be a pure profit sale and he has attracted interest from Napoli and Chelsea this month.

This saga has taken a new twist, though. According to The Daily Mail, Spurs have ‘made a shock enquiry’ for Garnacho after Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel rejected them.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

              The report explains:

‘United have been willing to sell for around £60million amid interest from Chelsea and Napoli.

‘It is unclear whether Garnacho would consider the move to Tottenham at this stage.

‘Spurs’ initial enquiry around the Argentine winger was around a loan deal, and the north London outfit have a long-standing, strong interest in Garnacho, though talks have still to progress.

‘Spurs’ late move for the Argentine winger comes just hours after a move for Bayern winger Tel broke down. The north Londoners had reached a £50m agreement with Bayern over the player, leaving talks between Tel and his agent as the final hurdle to get a deal over the line.’

On Friday, a report from journalist Fraser Fletcher from our pals at TEAMtalk claims a ‘swap deal’ involving Garnacho and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunu is ‘alive’.

‘Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is of interest to Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham and others after the 19-year-old has made it clear he’s open to a new challenge.

‘But an even bigger deal could still be done with sources adamant that Garnacho remains a key target for Chelsea and a move to the London side is not off the cards yet.

‘Man Utd, meanwhile, have asked to be kept informed of Nkunku’s situation, with the striker open to moving elsewhere to get more consistent playing time.

‘That has set up an opportunity for the clubs to do two deals that would see both players make the switch, although they would be ‘separate’ transfers for PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) purposes.

‘There is also a belief behind the scenes at Man Utd that Nkunku would fit perfectly into Ruben Amorim’s system and the manager is keen to work with him.’

                — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) February 1, 2025

Malacia, 25, joined United from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 as Erik ten Hag’s first signing at the club.

He was seen as a promising addition to the squad, offering competition for Luke Shaw at left-back.

However, his time at Old Trafford has been plagued by misfortune.

Toward the end of the 2022/23 season, Malacia suffered a horrific knee injury that ruled him out for over a year.

The setback severely hampered his progress, and he has yet to regain his spark.

The loan move to Benfica represents an opportunity for Malacia to rebuild his career.

Under the guidance of manager Bruno Lage, he will look to regain match sharpness and confidence.

If he impresses, he could either force his way back into Ruben Amorim’s plans at Man United or secure a permanent move elsewhere.

United have just signed Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu for €35 million. Amorim is said to have pushed for his signing to bolster his team’s left flank.

The club will be hoping that, unlike Malaica, Dorgu can fulfil his potential at Old Trafford.

Man Utd: Rashford transfer gets ‘green light’ from PL manager amid ‘personal request’ reveal in Barcelona blow

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery has reportedly ‘given the green light’ for the Premier League side to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

The England international is running out of time to leave Man Utd after he announced on New Year’s Eve that he wants to leave his boyhood club.

A fresh start is probably right for all parties, but the Red Devils are struggling to offload their academy product due to his huge salary and poor form over the past 18 months.

This month, Rashford has been linked with several European and Premier League sides, but it’s widely reported that Spanish giants Barcelona are his preferred destination.

It’s hard to see Rashford improving the La Liga leaders, but he could be a useful squad player if he can return to form.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

Barcelona’s financial issues are proving an obstacle and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims they ‘feel a deal is almost off’.

He said: ‘Barcelona feel a deal for Marcus Rashford is highly unlikely and almost off, due to Financial Fair Play.’

With Barcelona’s hopes of signing Rashford seemingly over, his options are limited but Aston Villa have joined the race to sign the 27-year-old.

This follows Jhon Duran’s move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr for around £64m before their transfer window closed on Friday night.

                  The Athletic’s David Ornstein explained:

‘Aston Villa are considering a move for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford as one of multiple options to strengthen their forward line.

‘Villa manager Unai Emery personally requested the club enter talks over Rashford as he is a big fan of the 27-year-old and believes he can help him recapture his best form.’

‘Rashford’s preference has been to join Barcelona or stay at United and therefore if he was to contemplate Premier League options such as Villa it is likely he will need some convincing.

‘In those circumstances, Rashford may consider alternatives and Villa could represent a persuasive case should they choose to proceed due to their place in the last-16 of the Champions League. Affording the money to cover the required portion of Rashford’s wages, worth £325,000 per week, is a further complicating factor.’

Romano provided a further update on Saturday morning. He tweeted: “Unai Emery has given the green light to Aston Villa board to try advance on Marcus Rashford loan deal.

“Expensive and difficult one but Villa have already approached Marcus’ camp, strong interest…and negotiations ongoing.”

Manchester United welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford aiming for four wins on the bounce in all competitions.

The Red Devils have played the Londoners 67 times and have won on 41 occasions.

They have drawn 14 and lost 12 times in their history.

Here are three plotlines to look forward to ahead of the game on Sunday.

Crystal Palace have been a tough nut to crack lately

Despite dominating the historical rivalry, Palace have not been an easy fixture for the Red Devils lately.

Palace have won five of the past 11 top-flight encounters (three draws and three losses), including three of their last five trips to Old Trafford.”

In fact United have not won against Palace since a 3-0 victory in the League Cup in September 2023.

They have also only won three out of the last ten Premier League games against the Eagles as they have struggled to cope with their counter-attacking style.

“Manchester United are in danger of going four consecutive league matches without scoring against a particular opponent for the first time since a similar run versus Arsenal between 1981 and 1983.”

Whilst most matches have been close affairs, United were ripped apart last May at Selhurst Park in a 4-0 defeat and will be hoping for some sort of revenge today after only managing a 0-0 draw at the same stadium in September.

                    Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford return

During the 0-0 draw in September, Andre Onana pulled off an incredible save that won the Premier League’s save of the month competition.

Nonetheless, the former United goalkeeper in the Palace goal also played a crucial part in the match.

He made numerous top drawer saves to keep United at bay and frustrate his former side as the Eagles held on for a credible draw.

The former United academy graduate has been in fine form this season, playing 23 times in the league and conceding just 30 goals in those matches.

He has also kept six clean sheets with only Mats Selz, Jordan Pickford, David Raya and Andre Onana keeping more this season.

United aiming to break bad habit

According to the BBC, “United have failed to score a first-half goal in 17 top-flight games this season, more than any other side, netting 68% of their goals after the break (19 of 28).”

This clearly gives the opposition an advantage as they are likely to score first. This happened against Brighton and Hove Albion, Southampton, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest in the last two months.

It is even more galling as Ruben Amorim’s side are actually very good at getting results when they get their noses in front.

“The Reds are unbeaten in all 19 of their league and cup games this season when scoring first, winning 11 and drawing eight. Arsenal and Newcastle are the only other Premier League sides still undefeated in all competitions after opening the scoring.”

Race against time: Rashford to Barcelona back on thanks to Pep Guardiola – report

FC Barcelona are hoping that the sale of FC Porto’s Nico Gonzalez to Manchester City will give them the funds to finalise Marcus Rashford’s move from Old Trafford.

The Catalans have been heavily interested in the United forward this month but have been so far unable to get the right financial combination to make a concrete move for the 27 year old.

It has been reported that the potential sale of Eric Garcia or Ansu Fati could be enough to free up the required financial space but neither deal has come to pass.

Barça have raised some revenue with the sale of academy product Unai Hernandez to Saudi Arabia but they will need more to afford a deal for Rashford.

It was reported yesterday that Aston Villa are aiming to jump the queue and get a deal done for Rashford as they know United are keen on completing a deal for Mathys Tel.

Catalan newspaper Sport has now reported that Barca have some hope that they can generate enough money for Rashford from an “unexpected” source.

“The sale of Nico to Manchester City would allow Barça to get a good chunk of money and increase the salary margin needed to secure the loan of Marcus Rashford before the market closes on February 3.”

“Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have shown interest in Nico González, a midfielder trained at La Masia and who was transferred to Porto in July 2023.”

The deal was settled for €8.5 million, but Barça kept a buy-back option and the percentage of a future sale which is a sizeable 40%.

Negotiations have reportedly already begun between Porto and City and the director of the Portuguese club will only sell for a “significant sum of money”.

Gonzalez’s release clause is a hefty €60 million, so 40% of something close to this would be an immense amount to put towards Rashford’s wages or even a summer transfer.

With the Englishman still nowhere near the matchday squad, a move away seems the most productive outcome for player, manager and club as United aim to go deep in both the Europa League and FA Cup in 2025.
