Rashford the big winner as Guardiola makes unprecedented January transfer window call

Rashford the big winner as Guardiola makes unprecedented January transfer window call

Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth retained their jewels and Tottenham – eventually – did what was necessary. The Marcus Rashford renaissance train departs.

The big old nerd losers will be along shortly.

    Marcus Rashford
It might be an idea, when the time comes for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United to part, for players to avoid scoring the first goal of his successor’s reign. It did not augur well for Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag, nor Rashford and the manager who has overseen his exit after two decades with his boyhood club.

“This is my first time playing for any other team so you don’t know what to expect but it’s been more excitement, not scared of going into a new environment,” Rashford said when the “new challenge” he sought in mid-December finally presented itself by early February.

But really wherever the destination, that challenge would have been the same: to “rediscover and improve as a player”. This is not his last chance at 27 but it is probably his best and most important.

There is a fundamental sadness about his Old Trafford departure. Beyond the sporting ramifications is a human whose life has orbited around one constant since he was a child. The suggestion is that those bonds are irreparably broken and even from the outside looking in it is clear that something has radically changed in that relationship.

From that regret comes an opportunity to rebuild and reinvent, placed back onto a Champions League stage his ability demands but many have long since decided his attitude and application do not.

Any hope that Rashford might find inspiration in proving those critics wrong is countered by these miserable last two seasons in which he has hit ostensible lows both personally and professionally. Many would derive a perverse pleasure if the misery persists despite a change of scenery and that is on them.

But for the first time in too long, Rashford is somewhere he feels wanted. The difference that makes could be quite something.

    You will be fed, friends.

    Nottingham Forest

INS: Wayne Hennessey (free, unattached), Tyler Bindon (undisclosed, Reading)

OUTS: Aaron Donnelly (free, Dundee), Andrew Omobamidele (loan, Strasbourg), Josh Bowler (loan, Luton Town), James Ward-Prowse (loan terminated, West Ham), Lewis O’Brien (loan, Swansea City), Tyler Bindon (loan, Reading)

The temptation is always to build and aim higher but the risk lies in forgetting to fortify the foundations. While Nuno Espirito Santo would have wanted another centre-forward, perhaps a winger and maybe a defender, the primary objective was always to keep the composite parts of this wonderful machine in place.

“This is the squad we have and these are the players that can solve all our problems,” he said. “It’s a very tricky market in terms of improvement so let’s focus and keep our players here.”

Those new contracts for Murillo and Chris Wood might not get the blood pumping in quite the same way as a club-record signing, obscure South American transfer or anything in between, but it is the sensible reaction to a sudden and unforeseen rise. Had Forest thrown their new-found weight around in the market it could have bolstered their Champions League push but just as likely threatened that delicate squad balance.

The cliche that standing still is moving backwards does not apply here. Forest were right to be boring in looking beyond this season instead of getting caught up in the moment. For a club whose transfer strength since promotion has been neither prudence nor moderation, keeping their powder dry was a welcome show of restraint.

    Wolves

INS: Emmanuel Agbadou (£16.76m, Reims) – deal sheets for Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga

OUTS: Chem Campbell (loan, Reading), Luke Cundle (£1m, Millwall)

It did feel as though Vitor Pereira was setting himself up for a fall having rather overestimated the extravagance levels of his new employers. The last two Wolves managers walked out or were pushed having made no attempt to mask their public and private exasperation at a perceived lack of support in the transfer market and it was entirely possible to envisage the latest incumbent heading the same way.

But Pereira’s confidence was not misplaced. Theirs has been a relatively modest spend on three players, none of whom rank in Wolves’ top ten most expensive signings ever yet each are clear upgrades on who they are replacing.

Agbadou has already heralded an overall improvement in the defence, Munetsi takes the place of Mario Lemina and Djiga arrives with similar rave reviews as Wolves have finally sought to rectify the raging dumpster fire that is their defence, while keeping Matheus Cunha for a few more months.

    Tottenham

INS: Yang Min-hyeok (£3.3m, Gangwon), Antonin Kinsky (£12.5m, Slavia Prague), Kevin Danso (loan, Lens), Mathys Tel (loan, Bayern Munich)

OUTS: Matthew Craig (loan, Mansfield), Alfie Dorrington (loan, Aberdeen), Min-hyeok Yang (loan, QPR), Will Lankshear (loan, West Brom)

Offer that at the start of the month and the outlook would be more positive. But as ever when Daniel Levy insists on being a messy bitch, Spurs pushed it, their borked squad and Ange Postecoglou himself to the absolute limit.

They needed a keeper who plays in the manager’s style, a fast centre-half (with Premier League experience an added bonus) and a forward of any sort of repute as an absolute bare minimum, with any and all other gaps potentially filled by the rafts of players returning from injury soon.

It does prompt a few uncomfortable questions about a transfer setup which had to be rescued from itself by the manager personally intervening to revive a move which seemed dead a handful of times, as before Postecoglou stepped in to convince Tel it was an impressively dreadful month of business, but they got there in the end.

    Crystal Palace

INS: Romain Esse (£12m, Millwall), Ben Chilwell (loan, Chelsea)

OUTS: Asher Agbinone (loan, Gillingham), Jemiah Umolu (loan, Port Vale), Chris Francis (loan, Dagenham & Redbridge), Luke Plange (loan, Motherwell)

“For every young player, we’re all looking for opportunities, and I think this is the best place to really take my game to the next level and push on in my career,” said Romain Esse upon joining a club “going in a great direction”.

“I think the next step in my development is very crucial,” he added. “I thought this would be the best place and I just can’t wait to start playing.”

It is admirable proof of a powerful reputation Palace have earned. The hope is that Esse can follow Michael Olise, Marc Guehi, Will Hughes, Eberechi Eze or Adam Wharton but Luke Plange, Nathan Ferguson and Malcolm Ebiowei show that simply taking the route from Football League to Selhurst Park is in itself no guarantee of success.

That such a defined path even exists is testament to Palace’s foresight and desire to build it into their transfer identity. It will certainly come in handy if a potential suitor ever dares meet the fairly basic criteria for a Guehi sale of a) matching the asking price and b) leaving Palace with more than a couple of days to acquire a replacement.

Chilwell is also a decent if entirely uninspiring loan.

    Bournemouth

INS: Matai Akinmboni (£810,000, DC United), Kai Crampton (free, Chelsea), Julio Soler (£6.6m, Lanus), Zain Silcott-Duberry (free, Chelsea), Eli Junior Kroupi (£9.9m, Lorient)

OUTS: Philip Billing (loan, Napoli), Max Aarons (loan, Valencia), Mark Travers (loan, Middlesbrough), Eli Junior Kroupi (loan, Lorient)

Andoni Iraola was expressly clear in his preference to loan a striker capable of filling the void left by Evanilson and Enes Unal’s injuries. That player might by Junior Kroupi one day but the 18-year-old will be given time to settle so the pivot to just squeezing hat-tricks out of Justin Kluivert and Dango Ouattara instead was shrewd.

It can also never hurt to raid Chelsea’s academy for any spare potential gems they have completely forgotten about, while bringing in Julio Soler to allow time and room to settle before interest in Milos Kerkez peaks is a surefire sign of a club punching well above its weight in the present without being distracted from the future.

    Brentford

    INS: Michael Kayode (loan, Fiorentina)

OUTS: Ashley Hay (loan, Cheltenham), Val Adedokun (loan, Cheltenham), Jayden Meghoma (loan, Preston), Tristan Crama (undisclosed, Millwall), Ellery Balcombe (loan, Motherwell), Tony Yogane (loan, Exeter), Mads Roerslev (loan, Wolfsburg), Matthew Cox (loan, Crawley Town)

Thomas Frank will be grateful for the few extra months to plan how best to spend the Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo windfalls but exclusively in the short term the Kayode loan represents an upgrade on Roerslev and a chance to move Kristoffer Ajer back into the centre if necessary.

It also feels absolutely right that Brentford have a proper Long Throw Merchant in their ranks again. The world is healing, even if the vast majority of their squad still struggles to.

    Ipswich

INS: Ben Godfrey (loan, Atalanta), Jaden Philogene (£20m, Aston Villa), Julio Enciso (loan, Brighton), Alex Palmer (£2.5m, West Brom)

OUTS: Henry Gray (loan, Braintree), Harry Barbrook (loan, Chelmsford), George Edmundson (£600,000, Middlesbrough), Ali Al-Hamadi (loan, Stoke), Harry Clarke (loan, Sheffield United)

Perhaps mindful of the way Norwich were pilloried for not spending enough upon promotion in 2019, Ipswich cannot be similarly accused of letting the moment pass them by. They can, however, be charged with also having Godfrey on their books.

Only ten clubs in the world have spent more money on transfer fees this season and just four Premier League sides went bigger in January.

Philogene falls neatly into the bracket of Premier League-adjacent but also very Championship in the case of relegation, while Enciso managed six shots in his first start so will at least be great fun.

But ultimately Ipswich might be the biggest winners of all after signing a keeper. The bar Alex Palmer has to clear is so low it’s approaching Earth’s core.

    Manchester City

INS: Abdukodir Khusanov (£33.7m, RC Lens), Vitor Reis (£29.6m, Palmeiras), Omar Marmoush (£59m, Eintracht Frankfurt), Christian McFarlane (free, New York City), Juma Bah (£5m, Real Valladolid), Nico Gonzalez (£49.9m, Porto)

OUTS: Issa Kabore (loan, Werder Bremen), Josh Wilson-Esbrand (loan, Stoke City), Kyle Walker (loan, AC Milan), Juma Bah (loan, RC Lens)

A handful of factors need to be met by a club to qualify for what most perceive to be a good transfer window: a considerable spend; deals done relatively early; no significant outgoings; and additions in multiple positions.

It generally runs counter to the reality that business should be judged holistically across a number of years, but in isolation the entirely broken rule is that the more signings and greater expenditure the better.

And the truth is that nothing titillates quite like a deadline day deal either. Manchester City have ticked pretty much every possible box.

Like a greedy child staring at an advent calendar, they have tried to have a few windows all at once. Pep Guardiola and friends have tried to correct some glaring retrospective transfer mistakes in one go, dragging the squad’s average age kicking and screaming down, overhauling the defence, midfield and attack and offloading long-time liability Walker while making a couple of signings with an eye on the future.

It certainly can’t be part of a coherent, intelligent plan. In Guardiola’s previous 15 January transfer windows as a manager with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City he signed six first-team players – Ibrahim Afellay, Gabriel Jesus, Aymeric Laporte, Maximo Perrone, Julian Alvarez and Claudio Echeverri – for just over £120m. Four for £180m in one window is an unprecedented mid-season care package and undeniable consequence of panic but also a long overdue recognition of past errors.

    West Ham

INS: James Ward-Prowse (loan terminated, Nottingham Forest), Evan Ferguson (loan, Brighton)

OUTS: Maxwel Cornet (loan, Genoa), Michael Forbes (loan, Colchester)

As far as Like A New Signings go, the loan recall under a new manager is a welcome addition to the genre. That Ward-Prowse represents an improvement in terms of midfield endeavour and defensive acumen reflects atrociously on those with whom he will now be vying for a place but Graham Potter will at least enjoy working on set-pieces.

Ferguson is the wildcard, an injury prone forward who only scores or assists once every four games or the former £100m-rated prodigy courted by the elite, depending on your viewpoint of choice.

But again, when the alternative to a bubble-wrapped Jarrod Bowen for most of the rest of the season is Danny Ings or an out-of-position Lucas Paqueta, reuniting Ferguson with Potter – under whom he scored his first Brighton goal – makes a fair amount of sense as a stopgap.

The inherent risk with a straight loan is that supporters develop an unrequited love again as with Jesse Lingard, or it all goes a bit Kalvin Phillips. Without fear of relegation or European aspirations, West Ham can afford to inject that sort of jeopardy into their season.

    Southampton

INS: Welington (free, Sao Paulo), Rento Takaoka (free, Nissho Gakuen), Joachim Kayi Sanda (£4.18m, Valenciennes), Albert Gronbaek (loan, Rennes)

OUTS: Ronnie Edwards (loan, QPR), Will Armitage (loan, Aldershot), Ben Brereton-Diaz (loan, Sheffield United)

They resisted any and all urges to spend £4m or so on Danny Mills, Emanuel Villa, Laurent Robert, Robbie Savage, Hossam Ghaly, Roy Carroll, Mile Sterjovski and Alan Stubbs so Saints are at the very least up on Derby’s January 2008 efforts.

Ben Brereton-Diaz’s loan back to St Mary’s in the middle of next season after Sheffield United are promoted and his Premier League curse continues will also be generational.

Lack of a striker due to INEOS prioritising summer spending, Amorim “pleased” with United’s January business – report

Lack of a striker due to INEOS prioritising summer spending, Amorim “pleased” with United’s January business – report

Manchester United’s lack of firepower up front was laid bare on Sunday with Ruben Amorim picking Kobbie Mainoo to start as a false nine against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The move did not pan out but it was a clear message to INEOS that the options at his disposal are simply not good enough.

Joshua Zirkzee, signed in the summer for £36.5 million, has managed one goal in the last 16 games while £72 million signing Rasmus Hojlund has not netted in the last 13 matches.

Despite the poor form of the duo, the co-owners sanctioned Marcus Rashford’s loan departure to Aston Villa while Antony and academy wonderkid Ethan Wheatley also departed on a temporary basis.

      Lack of firepower up top

With only Amad and Alejandro Garnacho left along with the two misfiring strikers, it seemed like a no-brainer that INEOS would try and bring someone in on deadline day.

But Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich is headed to Tottenham Hotspur instead with the Red Devils failing to pay a loan fee for the Frenchman.

Both Leon Bailey of Aston Villa and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku were named as surprise targets but both clubs did not entertain United’s late loan requests.

Panic set in soon enough with lots of names doing the rounds including Juventus ace Dusan Vlahovic but ultimately, the club decided not to bring anyone in, content with signing young centre-back Ayden Heaven and wingback Patrick Dorgu.

And according to The Manchester Evening News, Amorim and club officials are happy with the business conducted and are not thinking too much about the lack of firepower up front.

They feel a striker can be signed in the summer and a stop-gap solution would not have made sense amid INEOS’ plans of reducing the club’s bloated wage bill.

“Manchester United have prioritised summer spending amid their decision not to recruit a goalscorer in the winter transfer window, with a new forward set to be targeted in the close season.

“United do not expect any more incomings before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline Working within the financial constraints had a major bearing on United’s activity and the club is continuing to examine options to reduce costs to raise revenues.

Amorim “happy” with lack of strikers

“Senior club sources insist the hierarchy and coach Ruben Amorim are pleased with United’s winter business, with Paraguayan left back Diego Leon due to arrive in the summer after he has turned 18.”

The 20-time English league champions are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and INEOS feel it is okay to focus on the summer instead of trying to improve immediately.

It almost seems like they are treating the current season as a write-off despite the club still being in the FA Cup and qualifying for the Europa League Round of 16.

Amorim has been given a mountain to climb and another dismal six months awaits for fans. “We are going to suffer,” the coach had said a while back. It sounds quite apt at the moment.

Man Utd: Neville predicts ‘sad’ Rashford reality in response to play again question – ‘don’t rule it out’

Gary Neville has commented on Marcus Rashford’s situation after he completed his loan move from Manchester United to Aston Villa.

Rashford has secured a move elsewhere before the January transfer window closed as he’s joined Man Utd‘s Premier League rivals Aston Villa on loan with a buy option.

The 27-year-old has been linked with several European giants including Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus this month, but his poor form and huge salary has been a stumbling block.

Aston Villa moved for Rashford after the sale of Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr left Unai Emery’s side needing reinforcements in attacking areas.

Rashford is likely to get plenty of game time in all competitions as he’s capable of playing as a left-winger and striker.

When asked whether Rashford will play for Man Utd again, Neville refused to “rule it out” but admitted it “might be difficult under Ruben Amorim.

“It might be difficult under Ruben Amorim as he’s planted his flag in the ground on what he’s said about Marcus Rashford and that’ll be disappointing for Rashford,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“Don’t rule it out. He could tear it up and then United could want him back but if he disappoints then United may end up with him back. The ideal situation is for him to thrive at Villa.

“It’s sad. I do feel he has the talent to play for United.”

He added: “It was needed after the comments of the manager in recent weeks – there was no way back.

“He needs to get out and relaunch his career. He’s going to a very good team. A team that are better than Manchester United.

“The manager will give him instruction and in this period of his career he needs it. The style of the football at United hasn’t been great and he needs detail in his game. Unai Emery will give him that.”

Jamie Carragher meanwhile has claimed that he “never saw” Rashford signing for a European giant amid reported interest from Barcelona.

“I think it’s a good move for Rashford. There was talk of some of the biggest clubs in Europe buying him – I never saw that,” Carragher said.

“But there’s no doubt Aston Villa are one of the biggest clubs in this country and they’ve got a fantastic manager. And Unai Emery does get the best out of players more often than not. So it’s a decent move.”

Man Utd transfer: INEOS ‘reach £41m’ to ‘secure star signing’ ahead of Liverpool, Arsenal to ‘delight’ Amorim

Manchester United are reportedly stepping up efforts to beat Premier League rivals in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon starlet Geovany Quenda.

Following Ruben Amorim‘s move from Sporting Lisbon to Man Utd, the head coach insisted he won’t sign anyone from his former club during this January transfer window.

This has proven the case as Man Utd are yet to sign anyone from the Portuguese champions despite reports linking them with 2025 top scorer in Europe contender, Viktor Gyokeres.

The Red Devils are also linked with 17-year-old Quenda, who has shone for Sporting Lisbon since Amorim handed him his senior debut.

The 17-year-old right winger fits perfectly into Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation and he can play on either flank. He has two goals and six assists in his 35 appearances in all competitions.

👉 January Transfer Deadline Day 2025: Follow it LIVE with F365…

Man Utd have not been too active this month as they have only made one notable signing. They have been focused on outgoings as they are looking to raise funds for a major rebuild under Amorim.

The Premier League giants already have one eye on the summer window and a recent report from The Athletic‘s David Ornstein revealed their interest in Quenda.

‘Manchester United are exploring a deal to sign winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in the summer.

‘No formal offer has been made but United are looking into a move for the 17-year-old Portugal youth international, who turns 18 in April and is expected to cost around €40million (£33.4m, $41.5m).

‘There is also interest from other clubs and no negotiations have taken place so far, just conversations.

‘For now, though, United are prioritising business in the winter market ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline. Work on the next window will be stepped up subsequently.’

Now, a report in Spain claims Man Utd have ‘reached 50 million euros (£41m)’ for Quenda as they ‘prepare to secure this star signing’.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are interested, while Man Utd are ‘preparing an offer’.

‘Ruben Amorim knows him perfectly, since he was the one who gave him the opportunity to debut in the elite, and who established him as a starter. And he would be delighted to work with him again, although this time, in the Premier League.

‘Old Trafford are looking to carry out a major rebuild of their squad over the summer, and one of the first new faces who could arrive is the former Benfica player.

United midfielder having his medical at Championship club ahead of permanent transfer – report

Manchester United teenage midfielder Ruben Curley is reportedly undergoing a medical at Stoke City ahead of a permanent switch to the club.

Curley is out of contract at the end of the season, though United have an option to extend his terms.

He has made seven appearances in Premier League 2 this season, as well as featuring once in the EFL Trophy.

Earlier today, it was claimed that Stoke expressed an interest in signing Curley but United rejected their approach.

It seemed like Curley was poised to remain at United for the second half of the campaign but according to Peter O’Rourke of Football Insider, the Red Devils have performed a dramatic U-turn.

According to O’Rourke, “Stoke City have resurrected a move for Manchester United midfielder Ruben Curley.”

“The player is now having his medical at the club ahead of a permanent move to the bet365 Stadium.”

“The Potters initially had an approach rejected earlier in the day, but they have since arranged tests, indicating progress toward securing the deal.”

The report notes that the fact a medical is currently taking place almost certainly suggests Stoke are pressing forward with their efforts to get a transfer over the line before the close of the winter transfer window at 11pm UK time.

Stoke are currently 18th in the Championship table and are eager to bolster their squad options to avoid the possibility of relegation.

Curley has made 41 appearances during his time in the United academy, registering three goals and four assists.

He has never lined up for the senior team.

Amorim blocks United wonderkid’s loan exit amid concerns over senior star’s form – BBC

Manchester United’s 0-2 Premier League loss at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace once again featured a mistake from Andre Onana.

While he did pull off a fine save to keep the scores level in the first-half, Jean-Philippe Mateta’s opening goal was a result of another error from the Cameroonian.

He stood in no man’s land when Eberechi Eze’s hopeful freekick floated into the box was met by Maxence Lacroix. The defender’s looping header went over the goalkeeper’s reach and hit the post and the rebound was netted by Mateta.

The United No 1’s positioning was suspect to say the least and even if it was not as huge a mistake as the one against Brighton a couple of weeks ago, the 28-year-old keeps letting Ruben Amorim down.

              Onana’s mistakes keep increasing

Altay Bayindir, despite his recent impressive cup form, has also committed high-profile errors this season and is yet to make his Premier League debut for the club.

A change in goal is clearly required in goal with United keeping an eye out for potential alternatives. But the solution could come from within the club itself.

Interestingly, Amorim picked young Elyh Harrison as one of the substitutes for the game against the Eagles on Sunday which clearly shows how highly-rated he is at the club.

The 18-year-old spent the first half of the season out on loan at National League North side Chester FC where he enjoyed a hugely successful temporary spell.

He kept seven clean sheets in 18 starts at the Deva Stadium, impressing United staff with his mature displays. He was recalled with a view to send him out on another loan, this time to a team higher up the EFL ladder.

But clearly Amorim feels he can be of use and Harrison will not be going out on loan in this window despite interest from League One and Two clubs as per BBC.

“Manchester United brought teenage goalkeeper Elyh Harrison back from his loan spell at National League North side Chester earlier this month.

Elyh Harrison to remain at United

“Harrison was on the bench for yesterday’s 2-0 home defeat against Crystal Palace. However, despite interest from League One and League Two, the 18-year-old will now spend the rest of the season at Old Trafford.”

The England U18 international is only the second goalkeeper to win the Reserve Player of the Year award, which he won last season for his splendid performances for both the U18s and U21s.

He also became the second youngest to be conferred the award since Adnan Januzaj back in 2013. United coaches feel he has the potential to break into the first team.

With Amorim choosing to keep him at the club amid mistakes from both Onana and Bayindir, there could be a chance for him if he keeps impressing in training.

Rashford pinpoints two reasons that convinced him to accept loan move to Villa

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford has pinpointed Unai Emery’s drive and the ambition of the club as the two primary reasons that convinced him to accept a permanent move away from Old Trafford.

On Sunday evening, United confirmed that Rashford has joined Villa on an initial six-month loan until the end of the season.

It’s understood that the transfer also includes an option for the Villains to sign Rashford permanently for a pre-agreed fee, which is believed to be around £40million.

Earlier on Monday, Villa confirmed Rashford’s squad number. The Carrington academy graduate will sport the number nine jersey.

In his first sit-down with VillaTV, Rashford said, “It’s an ambitious time for this club and a great opportunity for me to join the team and help them keep pushing forward. I’m excited, can’t wait for the first training session and obviously the first game.”

“(Unai Emery is) a top manager and what he’s done at the club since he’s come to Villa is unbelievable.”

“It’s the constant ambition that’s attractive, and it’s why you want to join such a club. You want to keep improving year on year, and that’s what the team has been doing and are doing this year.”

“It’s a club that’s in a good position in the league, and they’re pushing to get higher. Still in the Champions League, a good, ambitious manager and great talent in the squad.”

The 27-year-old added, “I’ve had to choose somewhere where I feel my style of football is suited to, and can help them and help me rediscover and improve as a player.”

“Obviously it’s only short-term I’m here, so I want to make the most of my time here, and the only way to do that is by using my attributes and my skillset to help the team.”

Asked what he hopes to achieve during his time at Villa Park, Rashford replied, “I think it’s clear. We’re obviously still in the Champions League, we want to go as far as we can in that. If you don’t aim to win it, you’re never going to win it. That’ll be my main objective, and keep pushing in the league to get as high as possible.”

“Obviously, (it’s) the biggest competition for a club to be involved in. I’m sure it will be a new experience for me, playing for Villa in the Champions League.”

“It’s always going to be a great moment, but the aims remain the same, to try and do our best to win it. I’ve played a fair amount of games in the Champions League, so I feel like I’m experienced and know how to handle those types of situations.”

“But, like I say, it’s a new environment, new team, new team-mates, so it’s about shared experiences and using each other’s experiences to help you get through the game and hopefully keep winning.”

On what he can bring to the team, Rashford explained that he can hurt opponents and decide football games when he’s playing at his best.

He reiterated that his desire is to help Villa win as many matches as possible and collect as many points in the process while also possibly making history.

United’s financial power could be “decisive in closing the deal” for 31-yo Serie A midfielder – report

Manchester United have once again turned their attention to long-term target Paulo Dybala, as per reports.

United have parted ways with Marcus Rashford on a temporary basis, having agreed a loan deal for the remainder of the season with Aston Villa.

The Englishman hadn’t featured for Ruben Amorim since mid-December. Still, his exit has further weakened an already light United attack, who continue to struggle to score under the new gaffer.

Crystal Palace arrived at Old Trafford over the weekend and managed to get more shots on target than the hosts, securing a 2-0 win over the Red Devils. Jean-Philippe Mateta looked more dangerous than any United player.

Despite these glaring issues, United are set to wrap up their January business without any attacking reinforcement. Instead, it is being suggested that INEOS are exploring the possibility of signing Dybala in the summer.

According to Fichajes, the AS Roma attacking midfielder has “sparked the interest” of United, who are “closely following his development” as they intend to add him to their ranks at the end of the season.

It is claimed that the Premier League giants are searching for a creative reinforcement for their attack and consider the Argentina international as a “priority option.”

The Spanish outlet add that United’s financial power “could be decisive in closing the deal.”

However, considering the side’s financial fair play concerns, it’s tough to see them flex their muscles on a marquee name like Dybala, especially as their Champions League qualification for the next campaign is very much uncertain.

Roma, meanwhile, have not ruled out selling the World Cup-winning playmaker, whose contract in the Italian capital is due to expire in the summer of 2026.

A creative force like Dybala, who is capable of making a difference from wide areas as well as through the middle could be a perfect option for a wide playmaker role in Amorim’s 3-4-3 setup.

Had United shown more ambition and urgency in this window, the 31-year-old Serie A star would have been a top Rashford replacement for the remainder of the season.

Man Utd transfer: Reason INEOS cancelled Tel deal revealed after they ‘baulked’ at request for Tottenham-bound star

Manchester United reportedly decided to exit the race for Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel before Spurs reached an agreement with the Bundesliga giants.

The Red Devils have only made one major signing this month as they have bought left wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A outfit Lecce.

The signing of a new wing-back was a priority for head coach Ruben Amorim, but they have also been linked with several forward options.

Man Utd are short in forward areas following the exits of Marcus Rashford and Antony to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, but they are unlikely to add to their squad before the January transfer window closes on Monday night.

United were linked with Bayern Munich striker Tel, but he is set to join Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Tel is keen to leave Bayern Munich for more game time because he’s barely featured for Vincent Kompany’s side at the start of this season.

Spurs were initially looking to sign Tel permanently, but they agreed a loan deal with Bayern Munich and the teenager, who initially turned down a move to the North London outfit.

On Monday afternoon, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “Mathys Tel to Tottenham on loan, here we go!

“Straight loan and NO buy option clause. Agreement reached between clubs as Bayern have accepted the player’s decision and the player is on his way with agent Gadiri Camara.”

Interestingly, it’s now emerged that Spurs are trying to add a buy option into the Tel deal.

Romano added: “Tottenham have asked Bayern to include buy option clause for Mathys Tel.

“Medical done in London, loan deal in place and discussions still ongoing as final decision will be made soon.”

Regarding Man Utd’s interest in Tel, a report from The Telegraph claims they pulled out after Bayern Munich asked for a £5m loan fee.

‘Manchester United are not expected to recruit a striker or make any other additions before the transfer window closes.

‘They baulked at the £5 million loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding for Mathys Tel, considering it excessive and an expensive risk for a largely unproven 19-year old.’

Pundit Paul Merson has hit out at Amorim for letting Rashford leave as his “job is on the line at this rate”.

“The manager is running out of ideas at the moment. He’s struggling badly,” Merson said.

“What he’s done with the Rashford situation is mind-blowing. Mind-blowing. His job is on the line at this rate. If Rashford gets ten goals in ten games – and Man Utd carry on the way they’re playing, then the board will be asking the question: what are you doing?

“Rashford’s having an unbelievable opportunity, he’s going to one of the top teams in the Premier League. Great club, great support.

“The one trick we’re all missing here is he has to take his head with him. Nothing changes. It’s a big gamble, a huge gamble for Amorim as well.”

“It’s the most important thing”: January signing pinpoints his special quality which will ensure success at United

Sunday was yet another miserable day for Manchester United fans as they witnessed yet another home Premier League defeat, this time to Crystal Palace.

The only silver lining from the game was the unveiling of new signings Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu before kick-off in front of a packed Old Trafford.

The Dane is likely to be thrust straight into action given the poor form of Diogo Dalot at left wingback. The Portuguese is not a natural fit given he is right-footed and more of a traditional full-back.

The former Lecce star has experience of playing as a wingback for his former club and he is versatile and can play higher up as well as on the opposite flank.

                      Dorgu on joining United

In his first interview with club media, the 20-year-old discussed how he felt after completing the protracted move and how the new system introduced by Ruben Amorim was a clinching factor for him when it came to choosing the Red Devils.

“It feels amazing to be part of the family. I’m very excited to get going. I have heard about the incredible support and I’m happy to be one of the players of United now.

“It’s a huge club. It’s the biggest club in England and I’m really looking forward to working with the new manager [Ruben Amorim] and I feel the system suits me really well. So I’m excited to be here.”

He knows what the head coach will expect from him moving forward and the Denmark international discussed his strong suits and what he will bring to the wingback role.

On what he will bring to the wingback role

“I think I’m going to bring a lot of intensity and physique on the pitch. And a lot of energy and running.”

Lots of players have found the Old Trafford atmosphere and the pressures of playing for the 20-time English league champions tough to handle. But Dorgu is convinced that his steely mindset can help him succeed in Manchester.

“For me, it’s the most important thing because there’s a lot of talk about and around football. And you really need to be strong outside of football as well.

“And, when I’ve been in Italy, I’ve lived alone. Of course, my family is visiting me a lot, but you need to be really good mentally to stay focused and being concentrated on football.”

While the club are languishing in 13th spot in the league, United are still alive in the FA Cup, where they will take on Leicester City next on Friday.

Goals for the rest of the season

The Red Devils also qualified directly for the Europa League Round of 16 and Dorgu has already outlined his goal to try and win both competitions while also finishing as strong as possible in the league.

“We’re still in a lot of cup competitions so, of course, to win the cup games. And, of course, to win as many Premier League games as possible.

“My ambition is just to play a lot of games to be a great part of the United family and just to keep pushing and improve my potential.”

Dorgu is likely to make his debut against the Foxes and hopefully, he can play a key role in ensuring United do not lose again at home against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s visiting side.
