Interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has outlined his eagerness to help Manchester United in whatever capacity going forward.

Re-joining the club as assistant manager in summer, the once-prolific striker has stepped up after the club parted ways with Erik ten Hag on Monday.

Ruud explained to journalists in a Thursday afternoon press conference that his current role will definitely be a short-term one and that he’s dedicated to entertaining the Old Trafford crowd.

“It’s going to be a short job as an interim,” van Nistelrooy said.

“That was communicated very clear and I was happy with that. I felt that I was called upon to help the club forward in this situation.

“Obviously, it was difficult, Erik had to leave, I was very disappointed with mixed feelings but after that, you have to switch the mindset to win because 75,000 people are waiting and celebrating and millions are watching at home. That’s what we tried to do and the same for Sunday at least, and then after that we’ll see.”

Ruud’s first game as interim certainly had people celebrating inside the Theatre of Dreams, as United scored five times to progress in the Carabao Cup past Leicester City.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both scored twice, with the other from Alejandro Garnacho.

“I decided to come back here for a very important reason,” Ruud explained.

“I’m here as an assistant to help the club [move] forward. I’m still very motivated to do so in any capacity. As an assistant and now as an interim manager, and after that I go back to my assistant contract that I have here for this season and next.

“I’m very motivated to stay here and help the club forward. That’s my absolute goal.”

Questioned further on whether he’ll stay at United when a new permanent manager is appointed, Ruud reiterated his commitment to the Reds.

“We will see but it’s a contract situation that I’m in and my desire to help the club forward so I can speak to you about my side of this story and after that, when the new situation is occurring, when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop,” he said.

“I want to help, I want to do everything I can in my abilities, as many others do in this club, to fight for this club.

“The club is in a difficult situation and it is not there where we all wanted to be but the challenge is there. That’s why I’m here.

TEAM NEWS

Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Antony were missing from the matchday squad that faced West Ham in the Premier League last weekend, while Christian Eriksen joined that list for the meeting with the Foxes. 

For the visitors, just Omari Kellyman is missing through injury. However, Chelsea will also be unable to field Jadon Sancho, due to the winger being on loan from United and therefore ineligible to face his parent club.

Maresca has been fielding almost entirely different line-ups between league and cup games this campaign, with several players rested for the 2-0 Carabao Cup reverse at Newcastle.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The last Old Trafford match-up between the Reds and Blues came in December last year, where Scott McTominay scored either side of half-time to help us to a 2-1 victory.

We faced the Blues in April at Stamford Bridge, losing 4-3 with the Londoners scoring twice in stoppage time.

United had been leading 3-2 since just beyond the hour mark, thanks to efforts from Alejandro Garnacho (2) and Bruno Fernandes, but Palmer scored a penalty in the 100th minute, before sealing his hat-trick, and Chelsea’s three points, a minute later.

LEAGUE FORM

United sit 14th in the league table, although we can close the gap on Chelsea to three points with a win.

The Blues lost their season opener to Manchester City but have fared well since, emerging victorious from five of the subsequent eight fixtures and only losing narrowly at Liverpool a fortnight ago.

Palmer has once again been the undoubted star, weighing in with seven goals and five assists, while Nicolas Jackson has also contributed six strikes to the Blues’ overall tally of 19, which is second only to league leaders Manchester City.

Following the international break, Manchester United are back in Women’s Super League action, welcoming Arsenal to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

Mark Skinner’s side are in a blistering run of form in the early part of the 2024/25 season, but the Gunners, three-time WSL winners, will likely offer a stern test.

The United boss will hope his team can carry that momentum over, despite having over two weeks without a game.

Our game against the Gunners has been selected for broadcast and will be shown live on BBC Two, with coverage starting at 12:15 GMT ahead of kick-off 15 minutes later.

TEAM NEWS

Jayde Riviere (knock), Melvine Malard (hamstring), Anna Sandberg (knee) and Evie Rabjohn (knee) were all doubts heading into the last game against Brighton & Hove Albion, and none of the quartet made the matchday squad for that game, or featured for their national sides over the international break.

Skinner will hope that the additional time away from the domestic game has given some of those injured players additional time to recover, and he may deliver some new information in his press conference ahead of the fixture on Friday.

For the visitors, Leah Williamson, Laura Wienroither and Lotte Wubben-May were all missing from their matchday squad last time out against West Ham United, along with Amanda Ilestedt, who gave birth to her daughter at the the end of August.

As with Skinner, more team news from the opposition may be revealed through interim head coach Renee Slegers’s media duties running up to the game.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Out last time facing Arsenal, sadly, ended in a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates, but our record against the Gunners at LSV is more promising.

The visitors were one of the main challengers for the league title last season, but, following a Stina Blacktenius opener, goals from Leah Galton and Melvine Malard had us in prime position to take all three points.

Those hopes were dashed just moments from the final whistle, with Cloe Lacasse levelling the game in stoppage time.

The season before that, we did emerge victorious with a slender 1-0 win, although we’ll want to keep the scorer that day, Alessia Russo, quiet this time, as the forward now leads the line for Arsenal.

CURRENT FORM

The Reds are currently unbeaten in the 2024/25 season, and have conceded just one goal in all competitions — last time out in the 1-1 draw against Brighton, with former Red Nikita Parris the scorer — so are riding high in the WSL table.

Only Manchester City, who have played one more game, and Chelsea, who have won their first four, sit above us in the table.

Arsenal have had somewhat shakier start to their campaign, with former head coach Jonas Eidevall recently resigning.

That decision was likely prompted to some degree by the club’s league form: two wins, two draws and a loss.

Ruben Amorim is wary of a Sir Alex Ferguson tag ahead of his move to Manchester United if Sporting beat Manchester City on Tuesday.

Amorim has two games left in charge of Sporting, including the clash against United’s rivals in the Champions League,  before he moves to Old Trafford to become Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor.

“If the result is very negative, expectations will drop and I don’t think that’s a bad starting point, when you begin at Manchester United,” he said.

“If we win they’ll think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived, which is very difficult to maintain.

“I’m fully aware that I’m going to be judged as a manager on this game, and only on this game, and I realise what [people] can take from this depending on the result.”

Ferguson won a whopping 38 trophies in 26 years as Manchester United manager before retiring in 2013 and bringing about a downfall that Amorim hopes to reverse.

Both Sporting and City have seven points from their first three Champions League games this season and Amorim also reflected on the last time they came up against each other, when in 2022 City beat the Portuguese side 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16.

“I feel like I’m a better coach [now],” said Amorim. “Unfortunately what I feel is that Pep Guardiola has also become an even better coach, so the gap remains.

“[City have] the best team in the world and the best coach in the world.”

United legend Gary Neville gave his advice to Amorim ahead of him taking over at Old Trafford, starting with the backline playing further up the pitch as the current mentality makes Man Utd “play like the underdog in games”.

“If you want to push your defence up the pitch, which is what I think every team looks to do nowadays, Amorim has got to start with that because Manchester United quite often have to travel 70, 80 yards to score a goal because they’re so deep and they play like the underdog in games,” Neville said on his podcast.

“The other metric was possession one in the final third.

“So possession won high up the pitch: first was Manchester City, second was Tottenham, third was Arsenal and fourth was Liverpool. Manchester United are ninth.

“The final one I asked for was the highest turnovers.

“City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal made up the top four while Manchester United were ninth. These three things are critical to performance levels.

“Man Utd played like a team that is sat behind the ball. ‘Let’s try and get them on the counter or score from a set piece’. That’s got to change.

“You’ve got to be a team of dominance. And I mean dominance. I mean dominating the ball in the final third, dominating your forwards and staying high up the pitch.”

Manchester United summer signing Leny Yoro could reportedly make his return from injury immediately after the November international break.

United fended off stiff competition from the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to land the highly-rated Yoro from Lille.

It’s believed that the Red Devils and Lille reached an agreement for the teenage defender at around the £52m mark.

However, his start to life at United was interrupted after he picked up a metatarsal injury during a pre-season clash against Arsenal.

The issue required an operation and since then, he has been in rehabilitation with an aim to return to action as soon as possible.

Last month, United confirmed that Yoro had returned to individual training and was doing some work on the grass.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Frenchman and teammate Tyrell Malacia are unlikely to be fully fit before the November international break but now, The Evening Standard have suggested otherwise.

According to the newspaper, incoming United boss Amorim may have Yoro available for selection in his debut match against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town on November 24.

United officially confirmed Amorim’s appointment on Friday, including the fact that he will take over the reins of the team on November 11, after Sporting Lisbon’s clashes against Manchester City and Braga.

If this does indeed happen, Yoro’s availability will be a much-welcome boost for Amorim and United as they seek to climb up a few spots in the Premier League table.

The Reds are currently in 13th place after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United return to Europa League action on Thursday when they take on Greek side PAOK FC.

“The new Sir Alex Ferguson”: Amorim makes major Man United admission ahead of clash vs. City

Ruben Amorim has quipped that he will be dubbed “the new Alex Ferguson” if he manages to beat Manchester City in their upcoming Champions League clash.

Ahead of his official arrival at Manchester United as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Hag, Amorim is set to take on Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday night before facing Braga on Sunday.

He will then head to Manchester on November 11 to take charge of the Red Devils.

Ahead of the meeting with City at Estádio José Alvalade, Amorim has acknowledged that he is aware of the brewing narratives courtesy of facing United’s cross-town rivals and the reigning Premier League champions.

He said in a press conference (via The Daily Mail), “The focus is on winning the game for Sporting, after that, the inferences that people will draw from this game are not important to me because they could be misleading.”

“If the result is negative, expectations will drop; if we win they will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived!”

“What interests me is to win, a good farewell in Alvalade, win in Braga and start a new adventure in Manchester. What I want is to leave the fans and my players happy for what is to come in the new season.”

Amorim refused to answer questions in English. Journalist Nathan Salt reveals that Sporting’s press officer insisted that the 39-year-old will have plenty of opportunities to do so once he departs for United.

The Portuguese tactician however noted that he delivers his training sessions at Sporting in English and is prepared to simplify his instructions once he gets to Old Trafford.

“My communication at the beginning will be simpler because it is in English.”

“I think I will have to spend three months… they say that is enough. The players will not be offended if I say that [instructions] are more basic. I give training sessions here in English.”

He added, “It will be a different adaptation, but my life will be the same. There is a way of playing, an idea. Communication will be more basic.”

Sporting vs. City is set to kick off at 21:00 and it’s a fixture that several United fans will certainly have an eye on.

Manchester United have reportedly made a move for Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen.

United took a bold decision late in October, as they sacked Erik ten Hag following an abysmal start to the new season. The Dutchman left the Red Devils languishing in 14th in the Premier League table.

The club’s hierarchy displayed a commendable level of decisiveness, as they also secured the services of Ten Hag’s replacement, Ruben Amorim swiftly. The Portuguese tactician will formally leave Sporting CP and join United on November 11.

The way INEOS have operated in recent days is certainly praiseworthy, but the real test starts now, as how they will back Amorim would have a big say on his stint in Manchester. Interestingly, a report suggests United have already made progress in that regard.

According to a report from Spain relayed by Football365, the Premier League giants have made an offer for Christensen in their efforts to hand the incoming manager his first signing.

It is claimed that Amorim is “determined to strengthen his defence in the next winter transfer window” and his “first target” is the Barcelona central defender.

More astonishingly, the report adds that United have made a €15m “offer” for the 28-year-old, who left Chelsea for the Catalan outfit in 2022.

It is understood that Barca’s sporting director Deco “would be willing to consider” the figure in January.

The Dane’s future at Barcelona “is in doubt” under Hansi Flick, who has handed him just one substitute appearance this season.

Christensen’s injury struggles combined with the La Liga leaders’ strong options at the back could push him out of the club.

The offer from United “not only represents a good opportunity for Barcelona in economic terms, but would also give them the flexibility to make some reinforcements in other positions if they consider it necessary.”

Having said that, United added two new centre-backs to their ranks in the summer, and it is not far-fetched to assume that Amorim might first decide to give them proper opportunities to impress him before signing another defender.

Exclusive: Gary Pallister reveals the damning reasons why United are “in the position we’re in”

Gary Pallister, a cornerstone of one of the most successful periods in Manchester United’s history, has identified two key reasons why the club is “in the position we’re in” at the moment as the Red Devils continue to struggle on the pitch.

United are languished in 13th place in the Premier League table, only a point closer to Champions League qualification than the relegation zone, with a goal difference of minus three. The team are also yet to register a win in the Europa League, producing three disappointing draws from their opening three games.

This dismal start proved too much for INEOS to endure with the club’s rulers quickly moving to terminate Erik ten Hag’s contract following last weekend’s defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.

However, yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea – United’s first Premier League game since the Dutchman’s dismissal – showcased many of the same issues which plagued Ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford, despite Ruud van Nistelrooy being at the helm for the game.

And in an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person, hosted by Lucky Block, Pallister reveals United continue to look “vulnerable” at the back as injuries and absences have decimated the defensive unit over the past fifteen months.

Furthermore, the former defender states “we’re not scoring enough goals as well”, with this combination of a leaky backline and an ineffective forward line “tell[ing] you why we’re in the position we’re in.”

Pallister also believes United have made “mistakes in the transfer market”, with the pressure of playing for a “massive club” like the Red Devils having “swallowed up people” in the recent past.

But the 59-year-old focuses on the defence, referencing how the strength of the famous partnership he struck with Steve Bruce at United stemmed from how “regularly” the two played with each other when he joined from Middlesbrough in 1989.

“One thing we were lucky with was we escaped injuries for those first few years we were together, so we played really regularly. We had the ‘keeper settled, the right-back and left-back settled, so you had that defensive unit,” Pallister recalls.

He describes how the “solidity” a defence is able to develop “comes from playing week in week out with each other” – a luxury rarely afforded to defenders at Old Trafford in recent times.

Towards the end of last season, United clocked their 31st different defensive unit as injuries left the squad on its knees at times. Constant rotation in defence never allowed this “solidity”, as Pallister describes, to develop as a new partnership was fielded almost on a game-to-game basis.

United’s former centre-back says the more change in the defensive unit there is the “tougher it gets” to be defensively strong. He does, however, underscore that the club has “good players” in defence, identifying Leny Yoro as a “talent”.

Pallister believes the key to United improving is finding a “settled back four or…a back five now with [Ruben] Amorim coming in” and “getting used to playing with each other.” If the team can establish a bedrock of stability in defence, results and, almost more importantly, performances will improve with it.

Amorim, who takes charge at Old Trafford on November 11, would undoubtedly love to call upon the services of a prime ‘Daisy and Dolly‘, as Sir Alex Ferguson was able to in the 1990s, although Pallister still doesn’t know which one of the famous pairing the Scottish manager designated him with.

“We never knew which one was which. Certainly not a name we were very proud of”, the 59-year-old reveals. Three Premiership titles, three FA Cups, two Community Shields, a League Cup,  a Cup Winner’s Cup and the UEFA Super Cup – the selection of trophies Pallister and Bruce accrued together at Old Trafford – is certainly something to be proud of, however.

And it was a haul predicated on a rock solid defence, with Daisy and Dolly ever present at the heart of it. United need to find their modern day version to recapture the glory of its past.

United star makes timely return to training ahead of Amorim’s official arrival – report

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has returned to training at Carrington ahead of Ruben Amorim’s official arrival at the club.

Amorim, whose appointment was confirmed on Friday as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Hag, is set to officially take over at United on November 11.

The Portuguese tactician’s first match as United head coach will be on November 24, when the Red Devils travel to Portman Road to take on Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Amorim is set to be boosted by the return of Mount, who last lined up for the club in the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in September.

“Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has returned to training and is making progress in his return from injury.”

“The Manchester Evening News can now reveal Mount is back in training, which represents the next step in his recovery.”

It’s unclear whether or not Mount will be able to play before the upcoming November international break. United have two matches until then, against PAOK in the Europa League and Leicester City in the Premier League.

Steven Railston explains that Mount will not be rushed back into the action, with United keen not to aggravate the injury.

Since his £55million move from Chelsea in 2023, Mount has been unable to nail down a consistent run of games due to injuries.

The 25-year-old has made a total of 25 appearances for United since signing last summer. He has featured on only five occasions so far this term.

Mount will undoubtedly be eager to prove his fitness and impress Amorim in order to stake a claim in his plans.

Meanwhile, United return to action on Thursday for the meeting with PAOK. Kick-off is at 21:00 BST.

United join race for versatile 20-yo Serie A sensation who fits perfectly with Amorim’s style of play – report

Manchester United have set their sights on Lecce star Patrick Dorgu, as per reports.

United still have to wait a week before Ruben Amorim formally starts his work as their manager. However, multiple reports regarding his plans for the Red Devils’ squad have already started to circulate.

Erik ten Hag, who received backlash for his management style, has been sacked but there remain many gaps to fill in the United squad, who have recorded the club’s worst start to a league campaign after 10 matches since the 1986-87 season.

One of the most concerning positions at United is left-back, owing to never-ending injury issues to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Against Chelsea, Ruud van Nistelrooy started Noussair Mazraoui at left-back.

While the Moroccan star was absolutely brilliant in the 1-1 stalemate, United can’t continue to overlook the area of the pitch.

According to Football Insider, the Mancunians and Chelsea have joined Tottenham Hotspur in the “huge” race for Dorgu’s signature.

The 20-year-old left-back has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Serie A, leading to interest from top clubs across Europe.

The report adds: “Interest from United comes following the appointment of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, with the boss said to be keen to bring in players to suit his style of play.”

The Denmark international is impressively very versatile, having played as a left-back, right-back, left-midfielder, left-winger, and right-winger in his 12 appearances for Lecce this season. He also has two goals to his name across all competitions.

Top clubs in the Premier League reportedly “believe he could be a long-term signing both for the present and to become a star in the future.”

Amorim might be well aware of talents at Lecce, as in the summer of 2023, Sporting CP signed Morten Hjulmand from the Italian outfit.

Also a Dane, Hjulmand has proven to be a huge success under Amorim and has seen his name linked to United.
