Man United duo enter exciting off-the-field business venture with raft of sporting stars

Manchester United’s awful start to the season has led to a change in dug out with underperforming players continuing to struggle at Old Trafford.

Danish duo Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund are two of a small number of first team stars who can say they have pulled their weight this campaign and the pair are now joining forces off the pitch.

As reported by Danish media, both players are now part of the ownership group behind the energy drink, State.

The drink was launched in 2015 by two Danish football friends, Jon Andersen and Kim Have and now has the backing of more national sporting superstars.

Tennis legend Caroline Wozniacki joined Eriksen as part of the ownership group with Hojlund the latest native to back the product.

United’s number nine has purchased a significant number of ownership shares as well as agreeing a sponsorship deal with the company.

The 21-year-old released a short statement on his decision to join the group.

“I have used State’s energy drinks for many years, and there is simply nothing that can compare to it. To be able to step in as co-owner and become part of the company together with both Christian and Caroline, whom I have looked up to throughout my career, is a great honour,” it read.

The pair will be hoping for a fruitful venture with the drinks brand to align with an upturn in fortunes on the pitch at Old Trafford.

In fairness to Eriksen in particular, he has outperformed his expected level at the start of the season but the fact United are still relying on him to pull the strings in midfield is a damning indictment on the rest of the squad.

Hojlund has once more struggled for fitness but looks to be finding some consistency in terms of game time in recent weeks and remains United’s best option at the point of attack.

They will both be vying for starting spot in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s penultimate game in interim charge at Old Trafford with PAOK visiting Old Trafford on Thursday night in the Europa League.

United planning to “make moves in January” with two key targets identified – Sky Sports Germany

Manchester United are planning to “make moves” in the January transfer window with a striker and central midfielder on the club’s wish list.

Florian Plettenberg (Sky Sports) reveals on X the Red Devils will look to be active in the winter market with a focus on an “affordable striker” amidst the club’s ongoing issues in front of goal.

“Manchester United plan to make moves in the winter transfer market. Understand that the Red Devils are looking for an affordable striker.

“MUFC are also in search of a number eight, a central midfielder. Leon #Goretzka’s situation is still being closely monitored. However, as of now, the 29y/o still has no plans to leave Bayern in winter.”

United are currently languished in 13th place in the Premier League with a goal difference of minus three. Only Crystal Palace and Southampton, 17th and 19th place respectively, have scored fewer goals.

United are underperforming their xG (expected goals) by 8.81, comfortably the worst rate in the division.

This means the team are creating chances but simply failing to take them – a reflection of an underperforming forward line devoid of any sense of clinical finishing. As such, Plettenberg’s update that Old Trafford officials are prioritising a new striker in January makes perfect sense.

The two targets most strongly linked to United are Sporting’s Victor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko; neither would fall into the category of “affordable” though.

The Sky Sports Germany reporter also contends the club are also in “search of a number eight, a central midfielder”, naming Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka as a player being “closely monitored.”

United’s midfield unit has struggled this season with Christian Eriksen emerging as the team’s most consistent performer, despite many having written off the Dane’s career at Old Trafford after rarely featuring last season.

New signing Manuel Ugarte is yet to justify the club’s protracted pursuit of the Uruguayan international over the summer, while the performances of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo show their ages (in opposite directions).

A new midfielder would therefore be a welcome addition in January, though Plettenberg notes Goretzka has “no plans to leave Bayern in [the] winter.”

It is a positive update for United fans nonetheless, as recent reports had indicated the club would only be limited in their movements in January.

And while Plettenberg’s reference to an “affordable” striker indicates money will be tight, the fact United are also looking at a centre-midfielder suggests some flexibility in the budget.

Ruben Amorim appointment the ‘dream scenario’ for three Man Utd players

Ruben Amorim’s appointment as the new Man Utd manager is the “dream scenario” for three Red Devils players, according to former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin.

The Red Devils have been terrible so far this season with Man Utd currently 13th in the Premier League as Amorim prepares to take over on November 11 after Erik ten Hag’s sacking last week.

Man Utd have won just three matches all season with only Crystal Palace and Southampton scoring fewer goals than them in the Premier League this term.

But Nevin reckons three players could be buoyed by the news of Amorim’s arrival at Man Utd with Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte and Luke Shaw having reason to celebrate for differing reasons.

Nevin told BetVictor: “When you look at players trying to get into Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side, it might help if you’re Portuguese! There’s been an amazing amount of positivity from Bruno Fernandes around the announcement.

“I think Manuel Ugarte, whom he worked with at Sporting, will be important for him. In the end it will really come down to who fits into his system, because he is going to play three at the back. That will suit certain players, but others, not so much.

“It’s a dream scenario for Luke Shaw. He can play on the left of the back three, or as the left wing-back. Long-term, I think it will be harder for players like Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. They’re not young anymore and Amorim will want more dynamism in his midfield. I think it will be tough for them.”

But Nevin fired a warning to Amorim about his 3-4-3 system that he has deployed at Sporting Lisbon if he decides to use his favoured formation at Man Utd.

Nevin added: “Amorim needs to get them to a level where they can compete for European football again,” said Nevin. “Everyone wants to know which players will suit him, but he won’t know until he works with the squad. A player might seem perfect for a certain manager’s system, but then they might hate each other!

“It comes down to who buys into it. I do think he’ll make them better, but it’ll be intriguing to see how long it takes for his system to work. Three-at-the-back systems seem to work really well initially, but then teams work out how to play against it.

“Chelsea experienced that under Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel. The system brought immediate success for both of them, but then they both got found out the following season.

“It’ll be like that for Manchester United. He’ll bring in his own ideas and I suspect they’ll work really well initially because he knows the system. But Premier League teams aren’t stupid, they’ll learn quickly and find where the weaknesses are.”

Some fans have been disappointed by the impact of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS so far but Nevin reckons the Amorin appointment marks the start of their proper reign.

Nevin continued: “The INEOS era at Manchester United starts when Ruben Amorim walks through the door. They’ve got the backroom staff in place, the chief executive, and now they’ve got the manager they want – it’s all in place now. He needs to be given a minimum of two transfer windows, and after that you’ll find out exactly what he is.

“The worst thing they can do is what they did with David Moyes. If they end up doing that and sacking him after 10 months, then they deserve whatever happens to them. That group of players has shown that they’re not good enough, so it’s going to take time. They need to give him a couple of windows before they can expect improvement, never mind winning things!”

Man Utd: Shock Pogba return backed as ‘special’ £86m flop ‘perfect’ for Arsenal can replace ‘lost’ star

Manchester United have been urged to re-sign France international Paul Pogba as he is going to be “super motivated” when he returns from his doping ban.

The 31-year-old progressed through the ranks at Man Utd but left the Premier League giants after butting heads with Sir Alex Ferguson.

After deciding against renewing his contract, Pogba joined Juventus on a free transfer and reached his potential for the Italian giants.

The Frenchman’s form for Juventus tempted Man Utd to re-sign him in 2016 for around £86m. He proved to be a flop at Old Trafford as his poor attitude and several controversies led to him returning to the Serie A side on a free transfer in 2022.

Pogba’s career trajectory did not take an upturn after returning to Juventus as his second spell at the club has been disastrous.

The 31-year-old missed the majority of the 2022/23 campaign due to injury. Then at the start of this year, he was given a four-year doping ban as a positive test found he had a non-endogenous testosterone in his system.

Pogba appealed this verdict and had his ban reduced to 18 months. This means he will be free to resume training in January 2025 and play in March 2025.

Subsequently, it’s been reported that Juventus are letting Pogba leave, and he’s expected to secure a move elsewhere in January.

Premier League clubs are being mooted as possible destinations and Emmanuel Petit has explained why he would be “perfect” for Arsenal.

“Honestly, Arsenal should gamble on signing Paul Pogba. He will give everything on the pitch. It will take him a few weeks to get fully fit, but he will be so eager to wash his name.

“There is a motivation that is priceless to a manager like Mikel Arteta. Pogba fits the Arsenal midfield perfectly, he’s tall, strong and very creative.

“We all know how good a happy Pogba is, he needs love and to be given confidence, I think Arteta and Arsenal can offer this to him.”

Ex-Man Utd forward Louis Saha has encouraged his former club to re-sign Pogba again as he’d “love to see him” back at Old Trafford.

“Paul Pogba can go wherever he wants. If he’s given the platform to show his talent again, people will be reminded of how special he is,” Saha said.

“He can play in the Champions League; he can play for France and I’m a big fan of his. I’ve always been harsh on him because when you have that talent, you have a responsibility.

“He’s going to be super motivated when he comes back. I would love to see him at Manchester United because when you look at their midfield, they have lost Scott McTominay which is a loss because he contributed to the team well.

“When you look at how things went with previous managers and try to understand what happened, you see that there were mistakes that have been made – and letting Pogba go was a sign that things are difficult to manage at Manchester United.

“It wasn’t just an Erik ten Hag problem, several very talented players struggled with the club’s transition.

“There were problems with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and even Marcus Rashford in some way. All those things need to stop and hopefully their signings can perform the way they should be performing.”

“One of Europe’s best”: United must act fast to secure dream signing with Bayern set to pounce – report

Manchester United’s profligacy in front of goal played a major role in Erik ten Hag losing his job in the Old Trafford dug-out.

Despite scoring on his debut, summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has failed to build on his promising start leaving Rasmus Hojlund as United’s only real goal threat in the centre-forward position.

Incoming manager Ruben Amorim will be charged with improving United’s goal scoring numbers but it’s highly likely he will need to add to the current crop to solve the issue.

Rumours are rife that goal-scoring machine Viktor Gyökeres will be following his manager to Manchester but the Swede is quickly becoming a wanted man around Europe.

As reported by by football journalist Christian Falk, German giants Bayern Munich have earmarked Gyökeres as a potential long term solution to Harry Kane who turns 32 before the start of next season.

FC Bayern has the following strikers on the list, as Harry Kane (31) is the only in their squad:
❇️ Omar Marmoush (25/Eintracht Frankfurt). competitor: FC Liverpool
❇️ Viktor Gyökeres (26/Sporting Lissabon). competitor: Manchester United
❇️ Benjamin Sesko (21/RB Leipzig):…

— Christian Falk (@cfbayern) November 6, 2024

Falk says United are Bayern’s main threat to the signing of Gyökeres who continued his electric form last night, banging in a hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The journalist also notes Slovenian star Benjamin Šeško as an alternative for Bayern who are keen to add to their attacking numbers in the coming windows.

Šeško is another United name linked with the Old Trafford club who hold a long-term in interest in the Leipzig target man.

The 21-year-old has also started the season well in Germany with a return of one in two helping to catapult Leipzig onto the coat tails of Bayern at the top of the table.

Šeško teammate Loïs Openda and Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush complete the Bayern shortlist but INOES will be keeping tabs on their movements on Gyökeres in particular.

It’s unlikely the new board will want to do business in January but given Bayern’s lure, it may be a case INEOS need to act fast to secure their number one target for the new coach.

United will hope Amorim’s relationship with Gyökeres will help seal the deal should they decide he is their man and conversations are no doubt taking place on what the it will take to bring the marksman to Old Trafford.

No official move has been made by Bayern or United for any of the strikers on the list but if Amorim fails to get a tune out of United’s current options, the likelihood of INEOS making a call to Sporting will only increase.

Van Nistelrooy “not concerned” with United’s lack of goals, provides an update on three players with long-term injuries

Manchester United’s form in the Europa League this season has been concerning with the team yet to pick up a win in three games despite them taking the lead in all of those games.

In the new European format, the Red Devils will need to finish in the top eight to make it through directly to the next round with the club currently languishing in 21st position.

And while Ruben Amorim is expected to take charge from November 11, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is not thinking too far ahead and is fully focussed on getting the team back performing on the pitch.

He mentioned that PAOK are Greek champions and that it will be a tough European game at the Theatre of Dreams under the lights.

Goalscoring woes

As far as Amorim’s arrival is concerned, the interim boss revealed there has been no conversation with the Portuguese neither is there any clarity regarding his future.

“No, [I haven’t spoken with him]. No contact so far, so no changes in that. I don’t know when either. I’m so focussed on the present, to comment on that is very difficult. I’m putting all my energy into the current squad.”

United’s lack of goals has been a problem with the team creating chances but failing to put them away. That has led to rumours of a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres once Amorim gets here.

But for now, Van Nistelrooy and Amorim will have to work with what they have got and Rasmus Hojlund is a player full of potential and someone needs to unlock that.

The interim manager was confident that the Dane would be a huge success at the club and his only advice was that the 21-year-old just needs to keep calm under pressure.

“I don’t agree that we didn’t create enough chances [for them]. If you look at the statistics, we’re creating chances, that’s why I’m not concerned.”

He was asked about injuries and as previously relayed by The Peoples Person, Leny Yoro is back in training with the team along with Antony and Christian Eriksen.

“It’s a big moment for him, that first time he’s back in team training. Obviously, we’re gonna get him back partially over the coming weeks and look to get him on board as soon as possible.”

Interestingly, there were doubts about Marcus Rashford’s participation as the Mancunian was spotted in individual training but Van Nistelrooy dispelled those doubts and said it was just extra work that the forward was doing.

“He [Marcus Rashford] did a bit of extra work before the session on his own and then joined the group. There’s no special news on that one.”

Injury update

In another boost to the squad, Malacia is close to a return and has been training for a few weeks now. But owing to his long-term injury, the club might start him slowly and offer him minutes with the U21s before throwing him into the deep end.

Both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire remain sometime away from a return with the centre-back still doing gym work while the left-back has been out on the grass.

“Harry is still inside working on his rehab, Luke also does pitch work like he did today and he’s progressing there to do hopefully partial team training soon.

“Tyrell [Malacia] is fully in team training, and no restrictions, and it’s good to plan his game minutes, maybe in the under 21’s.”

The Premier League table of Big Chances shows Man City need Haaland

Liverpool are averaging three Big Chances in every Premier League game this season – putting them way ahead of Manchester City, who have created eight fewer Big Chances across the first 10 games of the season.

Liverpool topped this table at the end of last season and have made an equally strong start to 2024/25, though they have been helped by a particularly kind fixture list.

Tottenham are the Premier League’s highest scorers this season but they are actually creating Big Chances less often than even Brentford, who ranked highly on this metric last season too.

The biggest surprise is that City have actually created fewer Opta-defined Big Chances than Manchester United, despite City scoring 19 goals to United’s 12.

United have improved quite considerably in the creative department since last season, though they still have a problem finishing those chances; three United players are among the 10 worst finishers this season.

It suggests that Ruben Amorim has fewer issues than he might have suspected when he looked at the actual Premier League table.

The real success story of this season are the Cottagers, who were 17th in this table last season but are currently eighth after bringing in Emile Smith Rowe in the summer to supplement a creative department that also includes Andreas Pereira, Alex Iwobi and Adama Traore.

Aston Villa were eighth on this metric last season and have pulled themselves up to second so far in 2024/25, though Opta stats also show that Ollie Watkins has missed more Big Chances than any other Premier League player in this campaign.

The story so far: Man-of-the-match Martial gets up and running in Greece

Anthony Martial may not quite have been £50m down the drain for Manchester United in 2015 but he is gradually outgrowing his price tag at AEK Athens, who picked him up on a free transfer in the summer.

The Frenchman exploded onto the scene at Old Trafford, scoring a memorable debut goal against Liverpool, but is more of a slow burn for his new employers in Greece with one goal in four matches so far.

After sitting out the first three games of the season, he was eased into the team from the bench against United’s Thursday night opponents PAOK then Panserraikos, his minutes slowly increasing.

He marked his first start with a goal and a man of the match award, securing AEK a 1-0 win over Aris in the Greek Cup.

It’s his first goal in 339 days, his last coming while still a United player in a 3-0 triumph over Everton.

Less than a month later he played his last match in a United shirt as his Old Trafford career fizzled out through illness, injury and, ultimately, omission from Erik ten Hag’s plans.

AEK have played once more since their cup win, a 1-0 win at Atromitos in which Martial played the full 90 minutes for the first time.

As he has all season he operated from the left wing, but failed to make much of an impact either creatively or as a goal threat.

He has averaged 1.3 shots per game and is causing defenders problems on the ball, averaging 2 successful dribbles per game (stats taken from sofascore).

Overall, Martial is making a solid if unremarkable start to life in Greece, where he ended up after a summer of links with the likes of Atalanta, LOSC Lille and Flamengo.

Eventually he moved to the OPAP Arena, where he reportedly signed the biggest contract the Athens-based side have offered anyone in their history.

He lines up alongside fellow Premier League alumnus Erik Lamela, who used to play for Tottenham Hotspur.

Martial departed United as a free agent after nine years, during which he racked up 90 goals and 47 assists in 317 matches.

Joe has spent more than half his life writing about football and all of it following United. As a child he told a doctor his name was ‘Paul Scholes’, but could never pick a pass like him no matter how much he tried.

Arsenal told to consider Man Utd transfer hijack for ‘better version of Erling Haaland’

Arsenal have been told to beat Man Utd to the signing of Viktor Gyokeres after the Sporting Lisbon striker is called a “better version of Erling Haaland”.

Gyokeres scored a hat-trick as Sporting beat Man City 4-1 in a humbling defeat for the Premier League champions in Portugal on Tuesday night.

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim masterminded the victory over Man City with the Portuguese coach not joining the Red Devils until November 11.

And there have already been links that Amorim could take a number of his Sporting players with him to Old Trafford, including Gyokeres.

The Sweden international has attracted a lot of interest from various Premier League clubs after scoring 43 goals in 50 matches in all competitions last term.

And Gyokeres’ hat-trick against Man City on Tuesday night took his tally for the season to 23 in just 17 matches in all competitions.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart heaped praise on Gyokeres after the match and described him as a “better version of Erling Haaland”.

And former Arsenal striker Alan Smith reckons the Gunners should compete against Man Utd and any other club who attempts to buy Gyokereres in January or the summer.

Smith told Instant Casino: “I think having a more orthodox centre-forward than Kai Havertz would add to the Arsenal squad. I’m sure Arsenal looked at trying to sign one in the summer, but there aren’t many about, and if they are about then they’re going to cost a lot of money. A centre-forward of quality in January would be brilliant for the club if they want to challenge for the title.

“Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting is hot property, isn’t he? Ruben Amorim might have eyes on him for Manchester United, but he’s young, he’s of that profile that Arsenal need and he’s been knocking in goals for fun so far this season. At the moment, you’d say he’s the one making all the waves, so I’d like to see Arsenal make a move for him.

“Havertz has had a really good season so far – he’s picked up goals and led the line well – but having that more forthright presence through the middle would certainly be a great option for Mikel Arteta to have. It clearly wasn’t to be for Arsenal in the summer regards signing a striker so let’s see what they can do in January.”

It was announced earlier this week that Edu will be leaving his director of football position at Arsenal but Smith doesn’t think it will derail the club.

Smith added: “I don’t think Edu leaving as sporting director will interfere with the results on the pitch for Arsenal. The dressing room won’t be overly concerned, I’m sure the wheels are already in motion preparing for both the January transfer window and the one in the summer.

“They’ve got to get the right person in who’s of a certain quality, though. Arteta is so single-minded so I think he’ll only be focusing on the team and how they can improve throughout the season. It won’t affect them on the pitch.”
