Manchester United’s Under-18s have again extended our unbeaten record in the U18 Premier League North with an 8-0 win away at Leeds United.

The Reds were off the mark early in the first half courtesy of James Scanlon, before Bendito Mantato, Victor Musa and Amir Ibragimov contributed to a four-goal advantage at the midway point.

Another two goals each from Scanlon and Ibragimov after the break, sealing hat-tricks for the pair in the process, topped off another assured Saturday afternoon display for Adam Lawrence’s side.

Under-18s | James Scanlon got the young Reds off to the ideal start against Leeds with this well-taken volley…

The young Reds got off to a good start thanks to Scanlon, who studiously watched the ball drop out of the sky from goalkeeper Owen Grainger’s punch before hitting a driven volley into the bottom-right corner to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

Scanlon then turned provider on the half-hour mark, zipping a ball across the six-yard box for Mantato to poke home at the back post, despite heavy pressure from Leeds defender Joe Billett.

Mantato was back causing problems in the opposition box less than 10 minutes later, this time tempting Josh Hamilton to shove him off the ball and earning the Reds a penalty. Victor Musa shouldered the responsibility, calmly converting the spotkick and sending Grainger the wrong way in the process.

Ibragimov rounded off the half’s action just over five minutes from the break, cleverly losing his marker from a corner and before nodding home an inviting delivery from Jim Thwaites.

Scanlon started the second half just how he began the first. Musa seized possession high up the pitch and quickly laid the ball off to our no.11, who curled in an effort from a tight angle just two minutes after the restart.

Substitute Chido Obi-Martin, introduced on the hour mark, quickly set about teeing up Ibragimov’s second, evading his marker before invitingly fizzing the ball across the line for the midfielder to confirm our sixth.

Minutes later, Ibragimov was back among the action, benefitting from another substitute’s delivery in Samuel Lusale, helpfully tipped on by Grainger, before falling to our no.10 to slot home at the back post, sealing United’s seventh and his own hat-trick in the process.

Not content with just one Red taking home the match ball from the trip, Scanlon popped up seconds later to turn home the rebound of another Obi-Martin effort, registering a hat-trick of his own with the young Reds’ final goal of the day.

A strong team effort from the young Reds away at Leeds.

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Old Trafford.

Saturday 02 November 2024 10:59

Manchester United interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has said he expects a tough challenge when Chelsea visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

The former Reds striker will take charge of his first-ever Premier League game in the 16:30 GMT kick-off against Enzo Maresca’s side, following the departure of former boss Erik ten Hag.

Speaking to club media earlier this week, Van Nistelrooy discussed the mix of emotions behind that handover, having to jump straight in for the 5-2 win against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, before looking ahead to the upcoming visit of the Blues.

You can read, and watch, everything he had to say below…

Ruud’s Q&A ahead of Chelsea

Van Nistelrooy’s Q&A | Our interim head coach talks Ten Hag, a promising start and a tougher test against the Blues…

Ruud, now you’ve had a chance for it all to sink in, how do you reflect on the experience of managing Manchester United in the Carabao Cup against Leicester?
“Yeah, if I speak about the game, the reception, the connection with the crowd, and how the players reacted and how the players played, it was a great night. I enjoyed every second of it. Special, proud moment. Obviously the days before leading up to that were with mixed feelings. It was hard to see the manager go: the one who got me into the club, you know, the one who was fighting also for this club and cared a lot about the club. So that was hard. But I have to say that, after that, the crowd lifted our spirits and it was a great night in the end.”

Yeah, it was difficult for many of us who worked with Erik. He’s a fantastic human being. We all wish him all the very best. But how pleased were you with the reaction that the team brought onto the pitch, in what could have been a tricky tie?
“Yeah, it could have been, and it was a good opponent, a well-managed team in Leicester, but I think the players reacted very well. They took a lot of responsibility, also looking at themselves and [said] we need to improve and we need to do better. It’s not only the manager’s fault, it’s so they acknowledge that, and that’s obviously a big step in improving, and they enjoyed themselves on the pitch. Of course, I think Casemiro with the first goal, he changed the game. It was level, but it was a world-class finish and that lifted the spirit of the team and the crowd and got us going.”

I think you joked about messaging Ole, didn’t you, last night? But seriously, have you been in touch with any other team-mates, or has anybody reached out to you that you played with while here?
“Yes, I spoke shortly with Sir Alex. He wished me luck before the game. You know, Ole sent me a text to wish me luck, as [did] many former players that reached out and just sent me a text, [wishing] all the best. It was great to receive all these messages.”

Next up, it’s arguably a much tougher test against Chelsea, who are in decent form. So your thoughts ahead of the game?
“Yeah, it’s going to be a big match, a tough one. Chelsea playing really well at the moment. Lots of attacking power players who can decide the game, scoring lots of goals, playing very well on the ball. So, we’re going to have to be at our very best, you know, to get a result, to get a good game. It’s obviously what we want. We want to try and win it. But we also respect the opponent, know their qualities, and [what] we have to do. Yeah, we have to really be together and strong, you know, to stop them. And from there, see what we can do, you know, to win the game.”

You scored three goals against them while a player here. What are your memories of playing against Chelsea?
“Always tough games, you know, going to Stamford Bridge but also playing at home. It was also in the times where [Jose] Mourinho was the [Chelsea] manager and it was very tough teams to play against. Very well organised, strong teams. Physical. Strong. Obviously in the time with [Frank] Lampard and [Didier] Drogba. Players that can decide games. It was always great games to play against them.”

Press conference part one | Interim head coach Ruud answers questions on our future and a big game against Chelsea…

It was fantastic to see that attacking intent against Leicester, something you demanded from the team ahead of the game. Is it going to be the same approach on Sunday?
“Of course, when we have the possibilities to play and to attack, we always will try to do so. I think that’s what it’s like, you know, to play for this club and gets the crowd lifted. And that’s what the fans want to see. And, obviously, the intent is always there to do so. But, of course, you have to be the dominant side in the game and it’s definitely our intention. But if it’s not the case, then we have to find other ways to win the game, and there are other ways to do so and see how can get there on Sunday.”

And how’s the squad looking for the game? Any changes to the personnel from Wednesday night?
“Not many changes. We’re still hoping and working hard to get Christian Eriksen part of the squad. He’s working hard to make it in the last moment. And other than that, there’s no news on players that will be available, any other than yesterday.”

And finally, you wrote about the power of Old Trafford in your programme notes ahead of the game against Leicester. What is your message to the fans coming to Sunday’s huge game against Chelsea?
“Yeah, you know, I think in general the way we are supported and the way the fans are, and helping us, you know, in difficult times, and they stay behind the team and encourage the team, which is special. It doesn’t happen in any other club, so we’re very happy with the fans and we need them and we want to give the fans that back: the joy of winning games, and that’s our motivation. So hopefully the interaction is there again, because it will lift the team.”

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has returned to full training.

Mount will not be rushed back but his appearance on the grass, with the group, on Monday was a welcome sight as he looked fresh and positive.

After working hard on his rehabilitation during the recovery period, the 25-year-old is striving to be available again soon.

There is an international break on the horizon, after the upcoming home games against PAOK, in the Europa League, on Thursday and Sunday’s Premier League clash with Leicester City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is remaining in interim charge for these two matches, before new head coach Ruben Amorim arrives at Old Trafford, to prepare for his opening fixture, away to Ipswich Town on 24 November.

Man Utd make £12.6m ‘offer’ for Amorim’s first signing as Gyokeres snubs Old Trafford move

Man Utd have made an offer for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as they look to give Ruben Amorim his first signing, according to reports.

The Red Devils have turned to the Sporting Lisbon boss as they attempt to turn a corner under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ guidance.

INEOS decided to stick with Erik en Hag over the summer but recent results and performances saw them sack the Dutchman last Monday.

Man Utd have struggled to find a manager since Sir Alex Ferguson who can get them challenging for the Premier League title with Jose Mourinho guiding them to second place in 2018 – but they were still 19 points behind champions Man City.

And Man Utd supporters will be hoping they can gradually start to put in performances that make them look capable of challenging for the Premier League title again in the near future.

The Red Devils, who drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Sunday, intend to give Amorim the tools to be successful with reports in Spain claiming that the new Man Utd boss is ‘determined to strengthen his defence in the next winter transfer window’.

His ‘first target’ is going to be Barcelona defender Christensen with Man Utd now making a €15m (£12.6m) ‘offer’ for the Denmark international.

It is a sum of money that Barca sporting director Deco ‘would be willing to consider’ in January with an injury leaving out of Hansi Flick’s plans at the Camp Nou.

And Christensen’s future at Barcelona ‘is in doubt’ with just one substitute appearance all season for the experienced 28-year-old.

The imminent returns of Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia could also push the former Chelsea centre-back down the pecking order and the €15m offer from Man Utd ‘not only represents a good opportunity for Barcelona in economic terms, but would also give them the flexibility to make some reinforcements in other positions if they consider it necessary’.

Viktor Gyokeres and other Sporting Lisbon players have been linked to following Amorim to Old Trafford but a report in Portugal on Sunday insisted that the Sweden international does not want to join his current manager to Old Trafford.

Portuguese newspaper Record claim that Gyokeres doesn’t want to join Man Utd because they are ‘disorganised, unstable and permanently on fire’.

Despite that the publication reckons it is ‘practically guaranteed’ that the Red Devils will still make an approach for the Sporting striker as they look to improve their goal output.

The report adds:

‘It is true that the Red Devils have been out of the race, but with the arrival of Amorim, a great admirer of the number 9, it is likely that they will position themselves for an attack, not in January, as Rúben himself anticipated (even given the cost of the operation), but thinking about the end of the season.

‘Therefore, it is practically guaranteed that there will be an approach, Record knows that Gyökeres has other preferences for pursuing his career, as the United project is viewed with… suspicion..’
