Manchester United’s men’s team made precious memories for young supporters with life-limiting illnesses, at Manchester United Foundation’s latest Dream Day.

Players including club captain Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy took time away from football to meet young fans with serious illnesses at Carrington.

The heartwarming event, which takes place twice a season, gives Reds from across the country the opportunity to visit the club’s Carrington training ground, watch United train and meet their heroes.

Youngsters aged between eight and 18 years old were among those attending what proved to be a very emotional day, beaming with joy as they chatted and posed for photos with their footballing idols.

Precious memories were made at Carrington on Monday.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes expressed how much it meant to the players to take part in days like this.

He said: “It is really important. We know how much this means to the kids to be here with us – even if it’s only for a little moment to make them happy, it means the world to us.

“I think as a player, we always have a responsibility to our fans, and if we can help in any way to make their day a little bit better, then why not?

“It’s always good to hear their stories and to do things that will make them happy, so I’m really pleased that today I’ve met them and that the kids have loved it.”

Amad also enjoyed meeting the fans: “It was really nice to see the young kids coming to the training ground today and enjoying themselves.

“It’s important to help people not only on the pitch, but also outside of the pitch, it always puts a smile on my face. It’s important to make sure they enjoy the day!”

Rasmus said: “It definitely puts a smile on my face [being here]; it’s always a pleasure to see them happy and excited when they visit. It’s important to show that we care, especially as a Manchester United player; I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Tom Heaton added: “I think it’s always a good reminder of our responsibilities as players, as a football club, and to be role models and show that you can bring so much joy to people’s lives.

“It’s a really important day and a really good day, one that we all take very seriously.”

Tom Heaton understands the importance of Dream Day.

Morgan, aged 14, couldn’t get enough of the once-in-a-lifetime experience: “It’s been fantastic. I’ve loved seeing all my favourite players and loved getting their signatures and photos.”

His dad, Paul, also expressed the importance of days like this: “It’s really important that Morgan can experience something like this; it’s not every day that you get this opportunity, especially when you’re obsessed with football.

“To meet the players, have a chat with them, get a picture – it’s fantastic for us as parents to watch, see and enjoy. It’s dreams that we would love to give the children that we can’t always give them.”

‘Fear’ that Amorim ‘wants’ to re-sign ex-Man Utd man when he arrives at Old Trafford

0

Former Benfica defender Alvaro Magalhaes reckons Man Utd could swoop for Alvaro Carreras after the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag last week after a terrible start to the new season, which has seen Man Utd win just three of their first ten matches.

INEOS and the Man Utd board moved quickly to appoint a successor in the form of Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim with the Portuguese coach set to join on November 11, ahead of the next international break.

There has already been lots of speculation over potential new arrivals in January to support Amorim with Viktor Gyokeres and other Sporting players some of the most talked about.

And now ex-Benfica star Magalhaes is worried that Amorim could be tempted to sign Carreras – who spent four years of his youth career at Man Utd – with the left-back impressing during his time with the Eagles.

Carreras was initially loaned to Benfica from Man Utd but the Portuguese giants exercised their clause in the deal to make it into a permanent transfer earlier this year,

Magalhaes told Record: “I fear that Rúben Amorim wants him at Manchester United.

“It seems to me that he has the quality to be one of the first options and looking at the squad, I believe that with the new coaching staff he could become a possibility again, especially because the new coach knows him very well based on what he saw from him at Benfica.

“It would be a lot if Benfica had the ability to not let him escape, but now the decision is not just in the club’s hands.”

And Magalhaes has outlined the main strength of the Spain Under-21 international, who has made 25 appearances in all competitions since joining Benfica on an initial loan in January.

Magalhaes added: “This ability to react to adversity seems to be his strength. Great players only succeed if they are mentally very strong and that seems to be the case. Anyone who is weak cannot play for Benfica, just as they cannot play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, or PSG.

“If he were weak, he would have already been released from Benfica and would be demonstrating quality in another team. Benfica were in time to not lose one of those players that we must fight to keep at the club due to his quality. I hope he has a lot of luck and continues to have a great season.”

Academy Briefing: In-form U18s in Europe

Tuesday 05 November 2024 11:24

As Manchester United’s teenagers prepared for a European challenge with another scintillating league performance, the club’s younger sides have been digging into history as part of ‘A United Education’. Here’s all you need to know in the Academy Briefing…

MIDWEEK EUROPEAN CHALLENGE

Fans are encouraged to show their support for our Under-19s on Wednesday night as we host FK Zalgiris, Lithuanian champions at this level, in the second leg of the UEFA Youth League second round.

The 19:00 GMT kick-off at Leigh Sports Village sees Adam Lawrence’s United side start with a three-goal advantage, having triumphed 5-2 in Vilnius a fortnight ago.

Gabriele Biancheri and Ethan Williams scored doubles in the Lithuanian capital, with the fifth coming from James Scanlon during a frenetic final few minutes which provided Zalgiris with some hope going into the second leg, thanks to their two goals.

Should United progress, we look likely to then face AZ Alkmaar, winners of the competition in 2022/23, who currently hold a 4-1 lead over Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset.

The winners of that third-round tie will progress into the Youth League knockouts proper, where the ‘domestic champions path’ and the ‘Champions League path’ will meet.

Tickets are available via Leigh Sports Village here (£3 adults, £1 U16s and 65+).

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES FOR YOUNG SIDES

While United’s senior youth teams were in action on the road on Saturday, some of the club’s younger sides were away from Carrington for unique opportunities part of ‘A United Education’, the Academy’s industry-leading programme.

The Under-12s visited the Imperial War Museum North, a stone’s throw from Old Trafford, as part of their annual Christmas Truce Tournament project.

The Premier League-wide education-led competition sees clubs across the division participate in regional tournaments, the winners of which travel to Ypres, Belgium later in the year for a continental challenge. However, it’s not only those succeeding on the pitch who qualify, but those whose education programmes are outstanding.

The young players learn about the Christmas Truce, when soldiers on either side of World War One enjoyed a rare amnesty on Christmas Day 1914 and played football in no man’s land.

United’s U12s learning about the Christmas Truce with volunteers at Imperial War Museum North.

Volunteers at IWM North brought the Truce to life for the young Reds, who have also spent time at UA92’s immersive igloo room, to gain some experience of what life in the trenches was like. They also visited the Trafford Veterans society to speak to those who have served in the Armed Forces and learn from their past.

The Under-13s, meanwhile, were at Ashton-on-Mersey School to continue learning about the Munich Air Disaster. Roy Cavanagh MBE, a United fan and prolific author on the club’s history, spoke to the lads about his memories of Munich, having been a young boy in Salford at the time.

UNDER-18s WIN AT LEEDS

United’s Under-18s put in another assertive performance to extend their winning streak at the start of this season to eight consecutive league games.

Amir Ibragimov and James Scanlon both scored hat-tricks in an 8-0 beating of rivals Leeds United at their Thorp Arch training ground. Bendito Mantato and Victor Musa scored the other goals. You can watch highlights below.

United have now scored a remarkable 40 goals in these first eight games, conceding only four times, and sit top of the U18 Premier League.

UNDER-21s DEFEATED AT SUNDERLAND

Our Under-21s endured a difficult day on the road as they came out on the wrong side of an entertaining seven-goal encounter with Sunderland, going down 5-2.

Jack Fletcher and Gabriele Biancheri scored United’s two goals in a performance that left lessons to be learned, according to lead coach Travis Binnion.

“Some of these players are learning on the job and that’s what it’s there for,” he said.

“The Under-21s level is very different to Under-18s football, when the opposition do it right, when they play with tempo and intensity. Sunderland did that, so credit to them and [there was] plenty to learn for our boys today.”

Defeat leaves United with a record of four wins and four losses from eight games thus far this season in Premier League 2. A dozen points ensures Binnion’s team sit 13th in the 26-team division, which culminates in a 16-team end-of-season knockout competition to determine the ultimate winner.

COMING UP

As mentioned, the U19s host Zalgiris at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday night. Fans can find tickets (£3 adults, £1 kids and over-65s) here for the 19:00 GMT kick-off. As the game clashes with senior UEFA Champions League fixtures, it cannot be shown live on MUTV, but club media will be present to provide live updates on ManUtd.com and the United App, with highlights to follow once broadcasting restrictions are lifted.

Later in the week, Lawrence’s team host Everton, live on MUTV, hoping to extend our 100 per cent record in the league.

Revealed: How fans feel about the stadium project

Tuesday 05 November 2024 11:00

The initial findings from the first phase of fan consultation on the future of Old Trafford has revealed that more than 90 per cent of supporters are positive about the ambition to deliver a world-class stadium at the heart of a regenerated stadium district.

More than 50,000 fans took part in the survey, which was distributed to Season Ticket holders, United Members, and Executive Club members in September – the highest engagement rate of any fan research conducted by the club.

The results showed that a new-build stadium at Old Trafford is the preference for the majority of fans who responded – with 52 per cent declaring support for that option. Redevelopment of the existing stadium was preferred by 31 per cent of fans, with a further 17 per cent declaring themselves unsure.

The data showed the strongest support for a new-build stadium to be among current season ticket holders, with the desire for a new stadium increasing with the age of a season ticket holder. Younger fans lean more towards redeveloping Old Trafford.

The results will help the club understand the wishes of fans as feasibility work continues on the options for Old Trafford. Preserving history and heritage, increasing ticket availability, and enhancing the atmosphere were among the priorities expressed by fans in the survey.

In addition to ongoing engagement with our Fans’ Advisory Board and Fans’ Forum, the club has also held a series of focus group meetings with fans drawn from all segments of the supporter base to provide further insight on fans’ perspectives.

Rick McGagh, Director of Fan Engagement at Manchester United, said: “We are delighted that this survey received the most responses in the club’s history. It shows how important this work is, and to have this level of engagement at this stage is a really positive place to start.

“We know how important our home is to fans and we need to listen to them and gain all their views and insights in order to develop the world-class stadium they deserve.

“We are able to view the results through different lenses to understand if our season ticket holders feel differently about anything than say our official members. And if younger fans have different views to older fans. This insight is incredibly helpful and allows the project team to understand the differences as well as the commonality in our fanbase.”

The first phase of fan consultation continues today and tomorrow when hundreds of fans are expected at Old Trafford for a number of Town Hall sessions to understand more about the project and ask questions directly to members of the project team, including stadium district architects Foster + Partners.

The insights from this initial round of fan consultation work will feed into the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force options report that will be delivered to the club at the end of the year.

Amorim and Sporting in the spotlight

Incoming Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is in the spotlight on Tuesday night as he prepares for his final home game as Sporting boss.

Amorim’s Lisbon farewell is, ironically, a match against the Reds’ neighbours Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

The game kicks off at 20:00 GMT and is being shown live on TNT Sports, with a number of United fans expected to tune in to see how Ruben sets his team up for a tough test against one of the favourites to lift the trophy.

Of course, the Manchester derby takes place on 15 December, when our new head coach will go head to head with Pep Guardiola again, in the Premier League.

“The worst and best week of my life but I’m going to one of the best clubs in the world.”

Sporting sit in eighth spot in the table at present, after two wins and a draw. City are third, also having seven points on the board, and it promises to be a cracking atmosphere at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

During his pre-match press conference, Amorim said: “My focus is on winning the match for Sporting. The conclusions are not important for me because they could be erroneous.

“If we win tomorrow, they will think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived. That will be very difficult. It could increase expectations. I don’t know what is better when I start my new adventure.

“I will be able to control my emotions. It is important to win. If so, it helps me to leave with more joy. There were many games here – some very remarkable moments, some very difficult. But it will be my last [game] in Alvalade and it will be special.”

Amorim’s final assignment as Sporting boss is away to Braga on Sunday, as his current side look to maintain their 100 per cent record in the league.

He is due to start work at United on Monday 11 November, during the international break, with his first game in charge against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town at Portman Road on 24 November.

Amorim to ‘clean up’ Man Utd by selling four who ‘don’t interest him’ as Sporting star ‘prioritised’

0
amorim-to-‘clean-up’-man-utd-by-selling-four-who-‘don’t-interest-him’-as-sporting-star-‘prioritised’

According to reports, Ruben Amorim ‘intends to quickly clean up’ Man Utd and has made four players available for transfer in January.

Man Utd confirmed the appointment of Sporting boss Amorim as their new head coach following the decision to sack Erik ten Hag.

Amorim will not take charge at Old Trafford until November 11 as he works a notice period in his contract and is currently preparing his side to face Man City in the Champions League.

This will at least give the 39-year-old the international break to stamp his authority and get his ideas across at the club.

His first match in charge will be against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on November 24.

Man Utd spent around £180million in the summer transfer window and the Premier League’s spending rules will surely restrict them in January, but plenty of Sporting players are being linked with a move alongside Amorim.

Unsurprisingly, Viktor Gyokeres – who has 45 goals this year – is being linked, because a manager bringing former players with them to Old Trafford has worked so very well in the past.

Another player Amorim is reportedly keen to bring with him from Sporting to Man Utd is centre-back Goncalo Inacio.

Amorim to sell unwanted Man Utd quartet, sign Sporting defender

According to Sky Sport journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Inacio is ‘a summer priority’ for Man Utd and Amorim ‘could bring several other players he knows at Sporting to Old Trafford’.

The Red Devils were looking at young centre-back Ousmane Diomande last summer and it is claimed he ‘could also make the way to England’.

In order to buy, Man Utd must sell. A report last week claimed Amorim wants to sell four players who ‘don’t interest him’, and this report mentions the same quartet.

Indeed, ‘as a direct consequence’ of Amorim’s intentions to ‘quickly clean up’ the club through recruitment and a new identity on and off the pitch, Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been ‘placed on the transfer market’.

The Portuguese head coach wants to sell all four to ‘free up a large wage bill’ and target his players at Sporting, starting with Inacio.

The report adds that Amorim intends to ‘play football totally opposite to that of Erik ten Hag’, which is a pretty good starting point.

Inacio would undoubtedly improve Man Utd’s defence but Amorim has lots of options in that position, though keeping them all fit proved very difficult for Ten Hag.

Ten Hag used several centre-back combinations in his final 12 months at the club and it would not be silly to say that 36-year-old Jonny Evans was his most consistent performer when called upon.

The Dutchman signed quite a few players he managed at Ajax, which turned out to be an unconvincing transfer strategy.

The Man Utd hierarchy will likely be reluctant to give Amorim the freedom to raid Sporting but This Is Manchester United We’re Talking About, and they probably will.

Former United star says “special connection” could seal the deal for one of Europe’s most lethal strikers

0

Manchester United’s appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach has already set the transfer rumour mill into overdrive with conversations starting on which Sporting stars might be following their manager to Old Trafford.

Star striker Viktor Gyökeres is one of the names United fans are getting excited by, with the Swedish goal machine continuing his fine form in Portugal.

Former United centre-forward Dimitar Berbatov has given his view on the potential transfer, saying he feels there’s a good chance we see Gyökeres swapping Lisbon for Manchester in the future.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Berbatov praised the 26-year-old and says his current relationship with Amorim will be key to the move.

“We’re probably going to see him in a [Man] United shirt” 👕

Will Viktor Gyökeres follow Rúben Amorim to Old Trafford? 👀 pic.twitter.com/7GBYEIxZLE

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) November 4, 2024

“This guy, Viktor Gyökeres is scoring goals for fun right now, so I think there is a special connection with him and the coach.

So maybe, we are probably going to see him in a United shirt at one point,” said Berbatov.

Asked if it would be something he would like to see, the Bulgarian was in no doubt of United’s need to improve in attacking areas and feels Gyökeres would improve the current options.

“From what he’s showing right now, I think yes, because our strikers at the moment are not doing and producing, like we see from the wheel wagon (Sky stats graphic), 18th in the league for scoring goals is embarrassing for a stature of club like United,” he added.

United’s lack of goals has been an issue for the last couple of campaigns and this year’s profligacy was a big factor in Erik ten Hag losing his job at the Theatre of Dreams.

With just nine Premier League goals registered in twelve games, Amorim will be well aware of the need to improve those metrics quickly when he touches down in Manchester.

The new manager has promised Sporting he will not be going in for any of their players in January but should he struggle find the formula with the current crop before the end of the season, the Portuguese club might be expecting a call in the summer.

Amorim’s first game in charge will come against newly promoted Ipswich Town on November 24th.

Man Utd: Carragher predicts bold Amorim starting XI, including star who’s made zero appearances

Jamie Carragher is convinced new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim will change the Red Devils’ tactics to a back three when he takes over later this month.

The Red Devils have predominantly used a back four during Erik ten Hag’s time in charge at Old Trafford but many supporters and pundits struggled to identify the Dutchman’s playing style in his two years at Man Utd.

Ten Hag was sacked last week after a terrible start to the new season with the Red Devils winning just three of their opening ten Premier League matches.

Man Utd are currently 13th in the Premier League table and only Crystal Palace and newly-promoted Southampton have scored fewer goals than the Red Devils.

The Premier League giants moved swiftly to appoint a new manager last week in the form of Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim and many fans are excited about the potential change in style of play and formation.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher is convinced that Amorim will deploy a back three and use Noussair Mazraoui and Alejandro Garnacho as ultra-attacking wing-backs.

Carragher is also expecting summer signing Leny Yoro – who is yet to play a competitive match for Man Utd – to come into the team, when he is fit, as the right centre-back alongside Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez in a 3-4-3 formation.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “I go to the setup and I’ve almost gone for one attacking full-back on one side [Mazraoui] and Garnacho on the other because when you look at his set-up at Sporting, these players are asked to be really high like wingers.”

Gary Neville insists that Amorim must be the first manager in a decade to get the best out of new signings in order for him to be a success at Man Utd.

Neville said on Sky Sports: “He [Amorim] has to get the best out of the players. The players need to take responsibility for what’s happened in the last 10 years. The club have signed a lot of players that other clubs wanted and when those players have arrived at Manchester United they’ve deteriorated.

“Why is that? It could be the coach, it could be the players, it could be the environment is too big for them, whatever it is it has to change because if he [Amorim] doesn’t change that he will fall the same way the rest of them have.

“There are managers that have come here that have been tried and tested and successful, there are players that have come here with great potential and ones that you thought would be good signings for the club.

“Only really Bruno I can think of in 10 years has signed for the club and done more than I thought he would. I can’t think of any other player. That’s £1.8bn spent in the last 10 years, that’s one thing that has to change.”
