Tottenham Hotspur might just have disrupted Manchester United’s transfer plans. Desperate to avoid another relegation battle, Spurs are going all-out in the market to hand high-profile players to Roberto De Zerbi. In recent days, they have seemingly stepped up their efforts to convince Mateus Fernandes to move to North London despite interest from United. Tottenham Hotspur trying to sign Mateus Fernandes On Saturday, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Tottenham Hotspur are nearing an agreement over personal terms with Mateus Fernandes. United remain the Portuguese midfielder’s preferred destination, and there is confidence internally at Old Trafford that they remain in the driving seat to strike an agreement with West Ham United. Still, Spurs’ entry into the race should complicate United’s pursuit as the Hammers now have one more reason to not budge from their £85 million valuation. A report in Italy suggests this development might force United to make a U-turn on another Premier League midfielder. Manchester United make contact for Sandro Tonali Having made Fernandes their priority target, United reportedly informed Newcastle United last week that they will not enter the race to sign Sandro Tonali. However, SportMediaset journalist Orazio Accomando claims United have asked for information about Tonali. The 26-year-old Italian midfielder, known for his relentless work rate and athleticism, is now reportedly being chased by the Red Devils, Arsenal, and Tottenham. Spurs are supposedly pushing the hardest for £100m-rated Tonali’s services. However, both United and Arsenal can offer him Champions League football, which is considered one of the main reasons behind his desire to part ways with the Magpies. Rival PL team opens club-to-club talks to snatch midfield target from under United’s nose – David Ornstein

Tottenham Hotspur have made a major move in an effort to win the race for Manchester United midfield target Sandro Tonali, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed. Tonali interest United have wrapped up a deal with Atalanta for Ederson but that’s just the start of the club’s midfield rebuild. At least two more top-class midfielders are expected before the close of the window, with United keen on having quality depth in the middle of the park ahead of their participation in the Champions League next season. In addition to the likes of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Mateus Fernandes, United have also been heavily linked with Tonali. It’s looking increasingly likely that Tonali’s time at Newcastle has come to an end, more so after the club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification. His agent pitched him to Arsenal in January, but Newcastle refused to sanction the exit, given the lack of time to find a replacement. In addition to United, Manchester City and Tottenham have also been mentioned to be admirers of Tonali. It’s believed that City’s interest in Tonali is completely separate to their pursuit of Anderson. A return to Italy for Tonali has also been mooted. Newcastle are resigned to losing Tonali, although they remain adamant that he will leave for nothing less than £100m. There have been suggestions that United are prepared to meet this valuation. More recently, a report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that United told Newcastle they do not intend to enter the race for Tonali’s signature. Ornstein has now issued an update, revealing that Tottenham have opened talks with the Magpies to try and strike an agreement for the Italy international. Tonali latest Ornstein writes, “The north London club are vying with Manchester City to sign Tonali if he leaves St James’ Park — but by making club-to-club contact, it steps up the pursuit and underlines their intent to strike a deal.” “Discussions between the 26-year-old midfielder’s representatives and both suitors continue, as they attempt to strike an agreement on personal terms.” The report further states, “Spurs will hope that a high salary offer, head coach Roberto De Zerbi pushing for the transfer and the appeal of London may help swing the situation in their direction.” Ornstein also confirms that Newcastle do indeed want at least £100m to sanction Tonali’s sale. Whether this new development jolts United into action remains to be seen, though it appears they are not pushing particularly hard for Tonali. The 26-year-old made 53 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions last season, contributing three goals as they finished 12th in the Premier League. “Almost all done”: 26-yo midfield maestro confirms his United transfer is on brink of completion
Atalanta star Ederson has provided a huge update on his move to Manchester United. Agreement struck Earlier this month, a report covered by The Peoples Person confirmed that United had reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson for an initial €40.5m (£35m). Heading into the summer window, United’s top priority was bolstering the midfield and they have made a real statement of intent by quickly wrapping up a deal for Ederson, whose Atalanta contract expires in 2027. Ederson was identified by Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox to replace Casemiro, whose time at Old Trafford has come to an end after the expiry of his contract. United also have an agreement in place with Ederson over personal terms. The deal could eventually be worth up to €45m (£38.8m). It was expected that he would officially complete his move in early July but he received a shock late call-up to Brazil’s national team for the World Cup after Flamengo’s Wesley suffered an injury. Ederson featured for the last nine minutes of Brazil’s 3-0 triumph over Haiti after he replaced Bruno Guimaraes. Matheus Cunha’s brace and a Vinicius Jr strike secured the three points for Brazil. Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Ederson told the news outlet that his switch to Old Trafford is all but done. Ederson’s update The 26-year-old said, “Now I just have to wait and then we’ll see.” He continued, “It’s almost all done, but now I’m here and I have to enjoy this moment to the fullest.” At this stage, only Ederson’s medical examination and the completion of final documentation remain outstanding. Upon their conclusion, an official announcement will confirm him as the first recruit of the Carrick era. United are also working to agree a deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. United showing “serious interest” in 6’3 powerhouse as Bayern Munich greenlights 34.5m exit – report

Manchester United are showing “serious interest” in Kim Min-jae as Bayern Munich name their price for the 29-year-old defender, according to a report from Germany. Bolstering the Backline Despite Michael Carrick boasting five senior centre-backs in his squad, INEOS are continuing to scour the market for options to bolster the backline, even though the focus remains on midfield. Initially, it was believed the decision to extend Harry Maguire’s contract had eased the pressure to sign a central defender this summer. As a result, younger options to provide a successor to the 33-year-old Englishman were being targeted, such as Tromso speedster Sedi Kinteh or Tottenham Hotspur colossus Luka Vuskovic. However, more experienced centre-backs have come back under consideration in recent weeks, with the continued injury concerns of Matthijs de Ligt, who has not played since November due to a long-term back issue, and Lisandro Martinez‘s continued fragility likely driving this pivot. A bombshell raid for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero was reported by an Argentine journalist earlier this month, while a more affordable deal for Borussia Dortmund stalwart Waldemar Anton was also being explored. But Min-jae has emerged as another target on the radar, with United previously interested in the South Korea international in 2023 after he helped lead Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years. Once Bitten, Not Shy Despite the links to Old Trafford, Min-jae joined Bayern after the German giants triggered the £43 million release clause in his contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, signing a five-year deal. However, he has fallen down the pecking order since Vincent Kompany arrived the following summer, with the Belgian tactician opting for Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah as his favoured combination last season. CF Bayern Insider reveals the Bavarians are open to selling Min-jae if an “offer worth between £26m and £34.5m arrives this summer” – an availability which has put United on red alert over a potential swoop. The report states the Red Devils are “seriously interested” in another chance at securing the 6’3 defender, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have previously expressed interest. However, Bundesliga expert Christian Falk claims Serie A side Juventus are the frontrunners to sign Min-jae, even though he is an option for United. “Min-jae Kim is on the list at Manchester United. However, I heard that a deal is hotter with Juventus in Italy,” Falk states. “That said, it’s not certain that the South Korea international will even leave Bayern Munich, as he’s enjoying his role at the club. Let’s see what happens with Juventus; then perhaps talks will open with United if things don’t work out with the Serie A outfit.” If Bayern are demanding up to £34.5m for a player who turns 30 in November, INEOS will almost certainly turn their attention elsewhere, regardless of the concerns regarding the existing cohort of centre-backs at Old Trafford. “Reminds me of Declan Rice”: Harry Maguire waxes lyrical about United target who’s got “absolutely everything”

England defender Harry Maguire has shared his verdict on the ongoing speculation surrounding the future of Elliot Anderson, who has also been mentioned to be a Manchester United target. Surrender Over the past few months, Anderson has consistently been named as United’s top midfield target. He enjoyed a brilliant season despite Forest battling to survive the drop for most of it. Anderson is largely expected to depart Forest this summer. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is believed to want a British record fee for the midfielder, who is also wanted by cross-town rivals Manchester City. City have already had two bids for Anderson rejected by Forest. The most recent bid was worth £106m up front with potential add-ons taking it in excess of £120m. Marinakis is demanding that the fixed fee eclipse the £125m British record that Liverpool forked out to land Alexander Isak last summer. Anderson favours a move to the Etihad. This, alongside the excessively high sums involved, has seen United cool their interest in Anderson, leaving City with a clear run at him. United are turned their attention towards other targets including West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Speaking on The Rest of Football podcast on Netflix, Maguire expressed his admiration for Anderson. The two have been alongside each other in the England set-up, but they’re now apart after Tuchel’s surprise decision to leave Maguire out. Maguire shares Anderson view Maguire said on the podcast, “I’ve heard there are many clubs abroad after him as well.” “I must say, I was not in the England squad for 12 months, and I was interested to go in in March and just see there were 10, 15 new players who I hadn’t played with. And I knew he was a good player, and in training, he impressed me even more than I knew.” “He’s got absolutely everything. He reminds me of Declan Rice in some aspects in terms of his profile.” The former United captain added, “He’s good on the ball; he can drive with the ball.” “He’s got an eye for goal as well, to say he’s playing number six at the minute, but he’s one of those, I think he could play 10, 8, 6. He’s that good.” Anderson is likely to keep his place in the team for Tuesday’s meeting with Ghana, having started in England World Cup opener against Croatia earlier this week. United make position on Old Trafford project clear amid uncertainty over Andy Burnham’s mayoral exit – BBC

Manchester United’s position on their multibillion-pound Old Trafford regeneration project has emerged following Andy Burnham’s departure as Greater Manchester mayor. Uncertainty Last week, The Times revealed that United’s bid to construct a new state-of-the-art project could be thrown into “a period of uncertainty” if Burnham were to win the Makerfield by-election and vacate his position as Greater Manchester mayor. In March last year, United announced plans to leave Old Trafford in favour of building a brand new 100,000-seater stadium. The new stadium, which will be the largest in the UK, is set to be built on club-owned land adjacent to Old Trafford. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has repeatedly stated plans to bestow United with an iconic stadium, which he has branded the “Wembley of the North.” With a new stadium at its heart, the wider Old Trafford regeneration is projected to inject £7.3bn into the UK economy every year, supporting 92,000 new jobs and delivering more than 17,000 homes. Burnham has been a big supporter of the project and as such, The Times explained that some senior figures at United are worried that his departure could stall momentum, given that a new mayor could potentially withhold funding approvals, steer the board towards residential development, or refuse compulsory land acquisition if it becomes necessary. However, according to the BBC, United are confident they can work with whoever becomes mayor. This follows Burnham’s Makerfield by-election win, which means he must step down as Mayor and trigger a fresh election. United’s stance Simon Stone of the BBC writes, “Manchester United expect their new stadium plans to be unaffected by Andy Burnham’s departure as Greater Manchester mayor.” “Multiple sources have told BBC Sport the MDC is legally binding and has been constituted by Parliament, so only the Government can scrap it.” “United feel no matter who the new Mayor is, or which party they come from, their work on a stadium that is likely to cost in excess of £2bn, can continue.” The MDC (Mayoral Development Corporation) is chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe. United are hopeful that a deal with Freightliner for the land necessary to construct the new stadium can be struck this summer.
