“Underrated” United magician offered to two European heavyweights, INEOS could use it to their advantage – report

The conclusion of the 2025/26 Premier League season is set to mark the end of the road for several Manchester United players. Casemiro has already announced his departure, while INEOS are keen to offload Manuel Ugarte after a disastrous two-year stint at Old Trafford. Almost all the first-team stars currently out on loan are expected to leave, while the futures of a few stars remain up in the air. Plenty would like the club to sell Mason Mount, even though the midfielder and Michael Carrick have other plans. Things have not panned out for Joshua Zirkzee at United Same goes for Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman has bundles of talent, especially when it comes to link-up play and creativity, and his teammates feel he is “underrated“. But he was signed as a backup striker, and the 25-year-old has failed to deliver on that front. A mere two goals this season means he has nine goals to his name since his £36.5 million, which is simply not good enough. While the former Bologna ace would like to stay and fight for his place, United’s co-owners will be looking to recoup the money they paid for his services in 2024. As revealed by TuttoSport, the Netherlands international’s agent has been hard at work and has offered his client’s services to two Italian giants, AS Roma and Juventus. Two Italian clubs in the race for Joshua Zirkzee “Zirkzee is on his way out of Manchester United. “His agent (Kia Joorabchian) is working on a move and has offered him to Roma, as well as Juventus.” The 20-time English league champions would love for a bidding war to ensue, and their goal will be to avoid incurring a loss from the versatile forward’s sale. Hopefully, once Joshua Zirkzee is gone, the co-owners will use the money raised to bring in an experienced striker to back up Benjamin Sesko. With United expected to challenge on all four fronts next season, the Slovenian will need help, and INEOS cannot afford to repeat the mistake the Glazers committed with Rasmus Hojlund. Sesko breaks silence on the real reason he rejected United twice before finally agreeing move

Striker Benjamin Sesko has explained why his move to Manchester United had to wait until last summer to finally get over the line. Long-term target United’s interest in Sesko can be traced as far back as his RB Salzburg days, when he often drew comparisons to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Still reeling from their failure to snap up Haaland, the Red Devils launched an attempt for Sesko but it did not bear fruit, as he opted for a switch to RB Leipzig instead. Sesko’s Leipzig spell began in 2023/24. When United came back for him in the summer of 2024, he rejected them once more, opting to continue his growth in the Bundesliga. Last summer, it looked like Arsenal were on the brink of landing the Slovenian but they pulled out of a deal and switched their attention towards signing Viktor Gyokeres. The door swung open for United, and they walked straight through, securing their long-term target ahead of Newcastle, who had surprisingly been outbid on wages despite offering far more lucrative terms. United forked out £74million to lure Sesko to Old Trafford. He initially endured a mixed start under Ruben Amorim but kicked up a remarkable level since Michael Carrick’s appointment as the Portuguese coach’s replacement. Sesko finished the 2025/26 season with an impressive 11 goals in 30 Premier League appearances. Nine of those goals came in his last 14 appearances for the club. The 22-year-old missed United’s last three games with an injury that got aggravated during the 3-2 win against Liverpool. Sesko spoke to GIVEMESPORT and indicated that his transfer to United had been several years in the making. Sesko’s admission The forward told GMS, “It was a couple of years that they really wanted me and I really wanted to but I was like ‘am I really ready yet?’” “Then it just came and I really wanted to come here. It was not a doubt, I wanted to come here, wanted to challenge myself.” “I wanted to become a member of the club and I’m so happy about it.” With Slovenia out of the World Cup, Sesko has plenty of time to recover as he casts an eye on United’s pre-season tour. This jaw-dropping stat lays bare the scale of United’s superb 2025/26 renaissance – Opta

A remarkable stat has come to light, putting Manchester United’s brilliant season into perspective. Stunning campaign United enjoyed a wonderful 2025/26 season, the catalyst for which was Michael Carrick’s appointment as Ruben Amorim’s replacement at the start of the year. Far from finding stability under Amorim, United were a study in inconsistency, dogged by problems both on and off the pitch. But Carrick steadied the ship and embarked on a brilliant run that secured Champions League football and a third-placed finish for the Red Devils. Sunday’s 3-0 demolition of Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium took Carrick’s record to 12 wins, three draws, and just two losses from 17 games. Carrick was confirmed as permanent head coach last week. United, however, had consistently stressed they would not make a knee-jerk decision, vowing to explore all suitable and available options before naming anyone to the role. But Carrick’s outstanding results and performance made it nearly impossible to overlook him. Speaking to MUTV after the final whistle at Brighton, the legendary midfielder was hugely optimistic about the club’s future prospects. Astonishing stat There is even more reason to be hopeful, if a stat by Opta is anything to go by. Per the data analysts, United head a top-five mini-league of the Premier League’s strongest teams this term. Opta analysed the head-to-head matches between the leading five clubs and United came out on top of this mini-table, having won five of their eight games. Unai Emery’s Aston Villa ran in second spot, followed by cross-town rivals Manchester City. Title-winners Arsenal are only fourth and Liverpool at the bottom. Hopefully, with a strong summer window and more signings, United can kick on and mount a title charge next season. And just like that it’s all over. Another Premier League season ended, Manchester United trophyless once more. But the mood at Old Trafford could hardly be more different to the leaden depression of 2025, the crowd numbed into submission by the suffering inflicted by Ruben Amorim. Last season could not end soon enough, the final whistle against Aston Villa received like a mercy killing despite the positive result bringing to an end an eight-game streak without a league win. The picture now is a whole lot more pleasant. Carrick leading Arteta Buzzing off Michael Carrick’s new contract, there’s a sense that if the 2025/26 season was stretched out forever then United could chase down the big two. After all, Big Mike’s revitalised Red Devils battered Manchester City and beat champions Arsenal in his first two games in charge. There’s some crust to this particular pie in the sky. Nobody is seriously claiming United are ready to mount a title charge, but a simple piece of mathematics indicates just how well Carrick has performed. Since stepping in as interim head coach in January he has won 39 points from 17 games which, as The Athletic point out, is the most of any manager in that period and three more than Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Michael Carrick finishes with 39 points from 17 Premier League games, the most of any manager since his arrival… champions Arsenal were three points off his Manchester United side. pic.twitter.com/wiRJzYNnXc — The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) May 24, 2026 Don’t get carried away The mitigating factors are substantial, the biggest being that in that time United have embarrassingly had nothing to do other than focus on the league. By contrast many of their competitors have been fighting on one, two or even three other fronts. Lady Luck played her part too – how else can the wastefulness of Igor Thiago in United’s 2-1 win over Brentford be explained – and it’s hard to argue that United necessarily deserved every point they picked up. But you can only do what you can do, and Carrick has done that magnificently. Topping a table arbitrarily started in the middle of January wins no medals and butters very few parsnips, but it is a tangible indicator of the progress made by United under their new head coach. No shame in celebration The fans have been put through the emotional mincer enough times lately to deserve some good news, and if there is a small victory to celebrate then it should certainly be celebrated. With good results come high expectations. Next season should still be viewed as a campaign of consolidation rather than a realistic run at a Premier League title, but the goalposts have shifted slightly. Another top-four finish and no silverware may once have been counted as a success, but now that seems underwhelming. And so the United wheel turns. All eyes on next season What happens over the summer will, of course, be pivotal. United’s squad is currently nowhere near good or deep enough to challenge for major honours, or even to deal with the busier fixture list. How United strengthen is one thing, but what happens to their rivals will also be telling. Arsenal and City were streets ahead of everyone this year, but expecting the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea to fall flat on their faces two seasons running is unrealistic. Whatever happens, the first half of 2026 has been a utopia compared to what came before. Now sit back and enjoy the World Cup, watch some cricket and scroll the summer away – Carrick-ball 2.0 will be with us before we know it, and it will be fascinating to see what it looks like. Rio Ferdinand urges United to seal stunning deal for world-class attacker despite “crazy” numbers

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on the club to explore the free signing of Robert Lewandowski this summer. Available Barcelona confirmed that Lewandowski’s time at the Camp Nou has come to an end, meaning he is set to be available as a free agent. Having secured Champions League football and finished in third place, Michael Carrick and United are set to turn their attention towards the summer window. Bolstering the midfield is believed to be the priority but other positions could come into play, with the club in need of a deeper squad ahead of the increased demands of next season. Striker is a position United could seek to strengthen, especially amidst the uncertainty surrounding Joshua Zirkzee’s future at the club. The Dutchman struggled for playing time in the just-concluded campaign and there are persistent rumours that he could be on his way out of Old Trafford. It has been mooted that he could return to Italy, where he is reportedly admired by clubs such as AC Milan, Juventus and AS Roma. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ferdinand urged United to sign Lewandowski, insisting that he would not only offer cover at striker, but also mentor Benjamin Sesko. Lewandowski netted 120 goals in 193 appearances for Barcelona. He helped the Catalan giants win three La Liga titles. The Poland international was even more prolific at Bayern Munich, where he scored a mind-boggling 344 goals in 375 games, winning eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. Ferdinand’s plea Ferdinand said, “They’re talking about [Atalanta midfielder] Ederson who we should have signed two years ago. Good footballer.” “I think we’re going to have to buy two or three midfielders to cover that area and you need to bring in legs, they need to be mobile and players who can move.” “Lewandowski isn’t a bad shout either if they’re going to get another striker. If we brought him in, look at the experience he has, the amount of learning that Sesko will do…” The six-time Premier League winner added, “If you believe Sesko is the man for the next five years, the learning he could do behind Lewandowski who is a wonderful, humble human being. He would teach and show Sesko the way and get him playing.” “That would be a sensible signing even if the numbers might be crazy in terms of wages. If you’re trying to benefit the squad he would be a great presence.” “It’s going to be a big and interesting summer to see who Manchester United go for.” Sesko finished the season with 11 goals and one assist in 30 Premier League appearances – a solid return in his maiden season in England. Manchester United are looking at a number of midfielders heading into the summer, with the club keen on signing at least two players in that area. United’s priority is to replace Casemiro’s physicality and aerial prowess, as well as to raise the technical floor of Michael Carrick’s midfield. In recent days, it has been suggested that INEOS have accelerated their efforts to sign Ederson and Mateus Fernandes. However, their pursuit of Carlos Baleba, who was once considered Ruben Amorim’s dream target, has stalled. £100m-rated Carlos Baleba desperate to join Manchester United According to journalist Paddy Keogh, Manchester United were prepared to pay £75 million to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer. However, at the time, Brighton held out for a fee in excess of £100 million, believing Baleba was on a par with their record sale, Moises Caicedo. It is claimed United now have “a relatively free run at the midfielder, but interest has cooled.” The Red Devils are thought to be prioritising other targets, and Baleba is no longer at the top of their shortlist. The Cameroon midfielder would reportedly “jump at the move” and there would be no issue as far as agreeing personal terms is concerned. However, his underwhelming performances this season have raised some concerns, and it is thought a big fee would not represent “strong value”. The 22-year-old, who is known for his athleticism, is still an option, but Brighton remain “notoriously difficult in negotiations.” Carlos Baleba’s hilarious encounter with Patrick Dorgu Baleba delivered a promising cameo after coming on for James Milner in the second half of his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of United. After full-time, Patrick Dorgu, who registered a goal and an assist, was speaking to United reporters backstage. According to The Sun, Baleba walked past the huddle at the same time and shouted “Patrick!” Dorgu giggled before being asked whether he wanted the Brighton midfielder to move to United. The Dane smiled before adding: “No comment”. Featured image Ryan Pierse via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Arsenal are desperately trying to wreck United’s big-money raid for Carrick’s top summer target – report

Manchester United are expected to revamp their midfield this summer. Casemiro is leaving as a free agent, while Manuel Ugarte could be sold after failing to establish himself as the ultimate heir to the Brazilian. Those are moves that leave INEOS with no choice but to splash the cash to remake their midfield and build an engine room they can rely on while competing on multiple fronts. Sandro Tonali top Carrick target Several brilliant midfielders have already been linked, but Michael Carrick has asked United’s decision-makers to push for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. And while the Manchester Reds may well try to please their head coach by landing his dream signing, obstacles have already emerged. First, there is the ridiculously high transfer fee Newcastle are demanding. Arsenal looking to disrupt United’s Tonali pursuit Second, and perhaps more concerning, is what Tuttomercatoweb are now reporting. According to the Italian outlet, Arsenal are revisiting their interest in Tonali. In January, there were murmurs that the midfielder had been offered to the Gunners, but they never acted on it. Now, however, the report from Italy claims, “The two clubs are in contact to determine the possible deal’s margins and figures.” If Arsenal and Newcastle are truly in talks over Tonali, that should worry United greatly. Their push for a deal, knowing full well that United want him too, could complicate any potential St James’ Park exit. More damagingly, it could hand Newcastle the confidence to hold firm on their sky-high asking price, which would be bad news for any suitor. Manchester United will need to be ruthless when it comes to player sales in order to raise enough cash to reinforce across the pitch. INEOS have certainly improved on that front compared to their predecessors, but the team still has quite a bit of deadwood that needs clearing. The summer of 2023 was among the worst in the club’s recent history, and almost all the big signings who arrived in that window find themselves on the periphery. Andre Onana, regarded by many fans as one of the worst goalkeepers seen at the club, is on his way out, with Trabzonspor keen on extending his loan. Injury record of Mason Mount remains a huge concern Rasmus Hojlund is set to stay with Napoli, while plenty would also want Mason Mount to be offloaded once the transfer window opens. While the Englishman would like to stay, the truth is that he is simply too injury-prone. Signed for an initial transfer fee of £55 million, the former Chelsea ace has hardly ever been available. In three seasons, the United No.7 has managed a meagre 31 starts across all competitions, missing 69 matches due to injuries. It seemed like his luck was finally changing under Ruben Amorim, but familiar problems soon returned, and in the end, he managed only two starts under Michael Carrick. Carrick still has faith in Mason Mount Yet, The Athletic have claimed that the newly-announced permanent head coach seems to be a fan of his versatility, and with the Red Devils set to play in four competitions next season, Carrick feels there could be space in the squad for Mason Mount. The 27-year-old has played as a false nine, attacking midfielder, and even a deep-lying playmaker this season, which corroborates the head coach’s thinking. “Carrick is also known to think the positional flexibility of Mason Mount and Noussair Mazraoui is beneficial to his squad heading into a campaign of four competitions. Last chance for Mason Mount “Mount started in deep midfield at Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion in Casemiro’s absence, playing superbly at the Amex Stadium today (Sunday), but recruiting a No 6 (or two), is obviously United’s top priority in the summer market.” While the Portsmouth-born star struggled against the Black Cats, he did improve against the Seagulls. It will be interesting to see how many minutes he earns next season should he end up staying. Dorgu pinpoints the one thing he needs to get right to unleash the deadliest version of himself

Patrick Dorgu has had a very interesting 2025–26 season. From being accused of playing with palpable “anxiety” and being too “careless” in possession, to steering Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick, to spending roughly three months on the sidelines through injury, the Dane has experienced it all this season. Patrick Dorgu impresses vs Brighton To end the season in style, Carrick handed him his first start since returning from injury in late April on Sunday, and Dorgu delivered. Playing at left wing, the Dane dropped a brilliant shift capped with a goal and an assist for Fernandes’ strike that sealed the 3–0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Patrick Dorgu’s game by numbers vs. Brighton Action Touches30 Touches in the box5 Shots3 Shots on target3 Defensive contributions2 Chances created2 Fouls won2 Assist1 Goal1 He returned to the starting line-up with a bang, producing a top performance that takes his tally to five goal involvements, three goals and two assists, in five starts as a winger (post Ruben Amorim). Dorgu has been a massive hit out wide, so much so that many are now wondering whether that is his best position. Dorgu addresses his best position and what he needs to take his game to the next level In an interview with The Sun after the Brighton game, Dorgu was asked about his best position. He responded: “I need to ask the coach. I don’t know. I still have a lot to learn in that position.” Yet he hinted at embracing the winger role, going on to discuss both his strengths there and what he knows he must improve: “I lost the ball a few times in the first half today, so I still need to improve. “But obviously I’m further forward to the goal, and I can get into positions for the opportunity. I still need to work on my finishing. “I could have scored a couple more today, but yes, I enjoy playing there, and I can use my speed and my physique a lot in those areas as well.” While he has been great as a left winger, Dorgu certainly has one or two things to polish, and it is encouraging that he knows exactly what they are. That said, from what we have seen, if he can work on his finishing, United will have themselves one deadly winger ready to fire them to glory. Still eager to learn and working under a great man manager like Carrick, one would back the Danish international to only get better. Picture: Thierry Henry reacts with classy response after Bruno Fernandes smashed his assist record

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has sent a classy message to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after he surpassed his Premier League assist record. Undisputed assist king Fernandes officially broke the all-time Premier League record for the most assists in a single campaign after notching his 21st in the 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon. He delivered a sublime cross for Patrick Dorgu, who headed home United’s opener in the 32nd minute. Replays hinted at an own goal, as the attempt had struck the crossbar, then hit Bart Verbruggen, and rebounded into the net. However, the Premier League confirmed that the goal remains Dorgu’s and therefore the assist belongs to Fernandes. The Premier League told football.london in a statement, “It was determined a [Patrick] Dorgu goal yesterday. Initially by Opta, then no change from the Goal Accreditation Panel.” Comprised of two football experts and a PGMOL representative, the panel’s decision not to make any change has now made history for Fernandes. The Portugal international’s assist for Bryan Mbeumo in the 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest had seen him equal Kevin De Bruyne and Henry’s tally of 20. But he now stands alone as the undisputed Premier League assist king. Plaudits have since been pouring in for Fernandes, who was also named the Coca-Cola Playmaker Award winner. This follows the Premier League Player of the Season, Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, United’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year prizes. He is considered the heavy favourite to win the 2025/26 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, which will be officially voted on by his fellow professionals and awarded in August. Henry’s message During an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast, host Steven Bartlett showed Fernandes a message from Henry. The Frenchman said, “Please send my regards to him.” “I love him! Braino Fernandes!” Fernandes got on the scoresheet against Brighton as well, bringing his season totals to nine goals and 30 goal contributions.
