“If they lost to Sunderland”: United insider says Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come to a decision regarding Amorim’s future

Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United hangs in the balance at the moment. The Portuguese head coach was tasked with getting the Premier League giants back to the top, but ten months on, the team has yet to show improvements.

The Red Devils finished 15th in the league table last season, 42 points behind champions Liverpool. To make matters worse, they also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

INEOS, however, opted to be patient with Amorim and handed him an upgraded attack over the summer. Unfortunately, results have failed to improve, with United 14th in the Premier League this season after six games, already eight points behind leaders Liverpool.

The Red Devils have also exited the EFL Cup at the hands of League Two minnows Grimsby Town in the Second Round. Calls to replace the Portuguese head coach at Old Trafford have been gathering momentum in the past few weeks.

Multiple Replacements available

Recent reports have linked multiple names with the hot seat at Old Trafford. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been mentioned as an option following his fine run at the Vitality Stadium.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been linked with the job as well. Interestingly, the Austrian uses the 3-4-3 system and his contract at Selhurst Park runs out at the end of this season.

Finally, former England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly on INEOS’ radar, while ex-Barcelona manager Xavi is keen to take charge of the Red Devils too. With just two wins in six games in the Premier League this season, Amorim is on borrowed time at the Theatre of Dreams.

The 3-1 defeat against Brentford last weekend has weakened Amorim’s position, and a loss in the upcoming game against Sunderland on Saturday, October 4, could further complicate the situation. However, it now appears that INEOS are reluctant to wield the axe at the moment.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to be patient

Speaking on the Talk of the Devil podcast, journalist Laurie Whitwell said that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to hand Amorim the entire season to get his act together at Old Trafford.

“It is a big match, they need to beat Sunderland. I still think, from speaking to people, even if they lost to Sunderland, I don’t think that would be the end for Ruben Amorim,” said Whitwell.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the ultimate decision maker on this, really. He would take recommendations from Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox and the Glazers have a voice on this as well. But Ratcliffe is the one to decide, really.

“I’m told he actually wants to give Amorim the full season because it’s a new squad to a degree, him trying to get his methods across even more so. That’s the current message, at least from the top with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.”

Amorim has registered a 36.73% win ratio since taking charge at United in November last year. He has won just 18 of his 49 games in charge of the Red Devils to date, losing 19 others.
