Manchester United’s trip to the Etihad on September 14 marked Harry Maguire’s 250th appearance for the club.
Now that the centre-half is in the final nine months of his deal at Old Trafford, INEOS are starting to ponder what the future holds for Maguire, and whether it’ll be with the Red Devils or elsewhere.
How Harry Maguire has fared in 2025/2026
Maguire is vying to reclaim a starting spot under Ruben Amorim this season, having fallen behind Matthijs de Ligt and youngster Leny Yoro in the pecking order in the coach’s system.
He has featured in four of the five Premier League matches played thus far, being an unused substitute for the win over Burnley prior to the international break. Against Chelsea on Saturday evening, the 32-year-old made his first start alongside De Ligt, with Yoro replacing him in the 70th minute to see out the action-packed victory.
Amidst his fluctuating game time since Amorim took the reins, Maguire has not been called up to represent England since Thomas Tuchel succeeded Gareth Southgate, for whom he was always one of the coach’s most trusted lieutenants.
His last appearance for his nation came just over a year ago in a Nations League fixture against the Republic of Ireland, during which Lee Carsley was in charge on an interim basis.
As such, you’d imagine Maguire is facing an uphill battle to be restored to the setup in time for the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign next summer – but that hasn’t deterred him from wanting to continue at United.
Maguire’s future: The state of play
“I’m sure over the next few months they’ll (club chiefs) sit down and we’ll have to have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend or, obviously, the transfer window will open again in January,” said the former skipper back in August (ESPN).
“I have something in my mind about what I want to do and what I want to be. I don’t want to put it out there to everybody, but it’s an amazing club to play for, and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.”
Fabrizio Romano has also suggested those conversations between Maguire and the United hierarchy are now imminent, as he revealed: “Maguire is still seen internally at Manchester United, after 250 appearances, as a leader in the dressing room, as a very important player, and this is why his future will be a very point of discussion very soon.
“Ruben Amorim really appreciates the mentality of Harry Maguire. People at the club really respect what Maguire is trying to do – also for the young players arriving at the club now, and so for sure the future of Maguire will be a topic. He has a lot of respect internally and has a good relationship with the coach.”
