Video: Joy for United as key player back in gym training, it will be like a new signing

Manchester United endured numerous injury setbacks last season with many key players missing action.

This was notably felt in the defence as Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven and Jonny Evans all missed significant portions of the season.

The defence struggled to cope with these losses but arguably the toughest challenge was replacing Lisandro Martinez.

Disaster struck

The Argentine enjoyed a productive January, scoring away to Liverpool and Fulham but at the start of February he suffered a terrible injury versus Crystal Palace.

It was originally feared that the fan favourite could be out of action for the calendar year after his ACL surgery.

Fresh hope of quick return

As a result, he missed the rest of the 2024/2025 season but there is growing hope that he will be back in action much sooner than this.

Reports surfaced that the centre back was targeting a much earlier return in September, owing to how successful his rehabilitation has gone.

United fans will be even more delighted with his latest update as he posted a video of himself working out in Carrington on the opening day of pre-season practice.

On his X account he posted a video of himself undergoing some vigorous workout routines and posted the caption, “the comeback is getting closer.”

A vital season for his future

When Martinez has played for the Red Devils, he has regularly been one of the club’s most consistent and influential players.

Nonetheless, the uncomfortable truth is that doubts have begun to creep into many fans’ heads whether he can stay fit.

During his three seasons at Old Trafford, he has missed a shocking total of 99 games due to injury and this is something he must improve on if he is to have a future career at the club. Especially in the context of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven breathing down his neck for a starting spot after impressive debut seasons.
