Manchester United are on the hunt for the right candidate to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on Monday. INEOS have placed U18 boss and former United midfielder, Darren Fletcher, in charge, but the plan is to hire an interim manager until the end of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems the preferred choice currently, with the co-owners meeting the Norwegian to discuss the possibility. The Treble winner is not the only interim name under consideration, with United legend Michael Carrick another option. Michael Carrick rejects proposal The former midfielder, a target for West Ham as well, recently turned down the chance to take over from Ryan Mason at West Bromwich Albion, as per The Telegraph. “Carrick, 44, was on Solskjaer’s staff and then had three games as caretaker manager in 2021 after the Norwegian was sacked. “The former England midfielder, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, was sacked by Middlesbrough last June after failing to take the team into the Championship play-offs and is known to have been waiting for the right opportunity to come along. “He declined an approach from West Bromwich Albion following the dismissal of Ryan Mason on Tuesday and did not feel the Championship job was one to consider at the present time.” New-look coaching staff at United Michael Carrick was clearly hoping to get the call from Old Trafford, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe has different plans in mind as per Manchester World. While he could be the preferred choice to take over as caretaker, INEOS are also mulling over bringing him in as Solskjaer’s assistant. Much like how the partnership was back in the day, with Kieran McKenna another assistant of the Norwegian. With Mckenna in charge of Ipswich Town, Jonny Evans is expected to be play that role. “Michael Carrick replaced Solskjaer as a caretaker manager when he was dismissed over four years ago, and he has also held talks with the club over a possible return. New faces, hopefully we will see a new United as well “It is understood the pair could even work together and form part of a new-look coaching team, along with former defender Jonny Evans.” It will be interesting to see the final composition of the coaching staff. For now, Fletcher will lead the team for the Burnley game tonight, after which the Red Devils will play Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday.
