Manchester United’s unbeaten run under Michael Carrick came to an end on Wednesday, as they lost 1-2 to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. What made the defeat even more difficult to digest was the fact that the Magpies played the entire second half with 10 men, yet they looked by far the better team. The Red Devils simply could not handle the intensity, with Bryan Mbeumo struggling out wide, while the caretaker head coach‘s substitutions did not work. Fans did catch a glimpse of Casemiro playing on despite a facial injury, with a massive shiner on his left cheek. Facial injury details He had suffered the black eye during a collision against Crystal Palace. Due to the lack of options in the squad, Carrick had no choice but to play the former Real Madrid superstar as per The Sun. Yet, it was the Brazilian who popped up to score United’s only goal of the game, nodding in Bruno Fernandes’ cross for his sixth goal of the season. “Manchester United star Casemiro suffered a facial injury against Crystal Palace that left him with a black eye. “Casemiro arrived for United’s shock loss to ten-man Newcastle United on Wednesday night sporting a massive shiner on his left cheek. Casemiro will be sorely missed “The 34-year-old suffered the knock in a late collision during United’s 2-1 win against Palace on Sunday.” His eye injury could explain some of his erratic passing against the Magpies. Playing two games in the space of four days also took a toll on the 34-year-old’s legs. Despite his age, the Brazilian has been an ever-present member of the team this season, starting all but three Premier League games. Casemiro has announced his departure at the end of the season. His leadership will be sorely missed. INEOS could have kept him on for one more season. It will be interesting to see how the team copes without him.
