United identify 24-yo star as Casemiro replacement, Brazilian club “rooting” for deal to be agreed – report

Manchester United signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers early in the summer by triggering his £62.5m release clause. Cunha, who scored 15 goals in the Premier League last season, was by far Wolves’ most decisive player. His departure has had a significant impact on their results. Wolves sit right at the bottom of the Premier League table, with nine defeats and two draws in 11 games. However, despite their disastrous form, one of their stars continues to shine. Gomes willing to leave Wolves Joao Gomes has established himself as one of Wolves’ most important players, having started nine of their 11 league games this season. The versatile Brazilian is confident in possession and consistently demands the ball in different zones. Without the ball, he is tenacious and positionally astute. Earlier this month, a report in TEAMtalk suggested Gomes will jump ship if Wolves are relegated. United have been mentioned as the Brazil international’s long-term admirers amid their search for Casemiro’s replacement. The Premier League giants are yet to make a formal move, but their reported interest has sparked excitement at Flamengo. Flamengo rooting for Man United transfer According to journalist Jorge Nicola (via Sport Witness), Flamengo’s board are “quietly rooting” for the move. It is believed the Brazilian outfit are closely monitoring the situation. The 24-year-old left Flamengo for Wolves in January 2023 in a deal worth around €18.7m.  As part of the agreement, Flamengo kept 10 per cent of a future sale. As such, a big-money move away from Wolves should help the Brazilian side secure a sizeable windfall. It has been widely reported that United are eager to strengthen their midfield in January, and Gomes has seemingly all the tools required to replace Casemiro in the long run. Considering Wolves’ form, the figures at Molineux are unlikely to consider their star player’s exit during the winter window. However, the story could be very different at the end of the season.
