United handed clear path to sign top Serie A wing‑back, built for Amorim’s system – report

Manchester United have been handed a clear route to sign long-term target Denzel Dumfries. One of the most crucial elements in Ruben Amorim’s system at United is the wing-back role. Under Amorim, wing-backs are not merely defenders; they are expected to be dynamic, attacking outlets who stretch the pitch, drive forward with the ball, create chances, score goals, and deliver assists. In essence, they function as key attackers in his set-up, not just auxiliary full-backs. This demand makes the wing-back position central to how United play. The need for wing-backs At present, Amad Diallo is arguably the only player who has adapted seamlessly to the wing-back role. By contrast, Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu have struggled to show consistency in the role. Their inconsistency has given INEOS further incentive to strengthen the flanks and pursue specialist wing-backs. One name that continues to surface is Inter Milan’s Dumfries. Why Dumfries fits Amorim’s system Dumfries offers exceptional physical attributes, power, pace, and stamina, combined with a relentless work rate and attacking contributions. His late runs into the box, dangerous crossing, and goal threat, allied with tactical intelligence, make him a natural fit for Amorim’s wing-back demands. United have tracked him for years, dating back to the Erik ten Hag era, but have never managed to secure his signature. What United must do to finally land Dumfries Now, however, they have been handed clear instructions on how to make the move possible. Speaking about Dumfries’ future at Inter, journalist Rudy Galetti via Teamtalk underlined the Dutchman’s importance to the Italian giants but admitted: “Inter are not closing the door to a potential transfer. If a serious and high-value offer arrives in the coming months, the Italian club would be willing to evaluate it carefully.” Whether INEOS decide to test Inter’s resolve with a substantial bid remains to be seen. That said, when can United sign Dumfries? A January move appears unlikely. Dumfries, whose contract with Inter runs until 2028, is currently sidelined after undergoing surgery that will keep him out for several months. That means any potential switch to Old Trafford for the Dutch international would most likely take place next summer. With Dalot linked with a possible exit in 2026, Dumfries could emerge as the perfect replacement and, crucially, the ideal wing-back to power Amorim’s system.
