Manchester United may yet make a move to bring Angel Gomes back to Old Trafford this summer with the situation between club and former player labelled “one to watch”.
The 24-year-old left United on a free transfer when his contract expired in 2020 and has since dazzled in Ligue 1 for Lille.
His deal with the French side is up at the end of this season and with the midfielder not looking to renew, he will once more be available for free, although this time as a fully-formed international rather than a promising youngster.
Gomes made his England debut under interim manager Lee Carsley and was a revelation on the international stage, although was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s first squad as Three Lions boss.
Domestically, the Carrington graduate has 10 goals and 19 assists from 134 appearances for Lille where he has impressed as a deep-lying playmaker as well as showing his versatility across the midfield line.
He has long been seen as a good option for Ruben Amorim, who was reported to be keen on bringing him back to United as he looks for fresh legs in the middle of the park where 33-year-old duo Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggle for dynamism.
His performances have even led to comparisons with midfield heavyweights Rodri and Frenkie de Jong.
It was reported earlier this month that the Red Devils were “unlikely” to pursue Gomes this summer, but speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that fans shouldn’t “discount” the signing.
Competition for the player’s signature will be fierce given his excellent reputation and lack of a transfer fee, and West Ham United are already believed to have been rejected.
Tottenham Hotspur are said to be near the front of the queue for the midfielder, who was born in London, but Jacobs indicates that they don’t have him tied up just yet.
“I still wouldn’t discount Manchester United making a move to re-sign Gomes, and that could also be one to watch,” he said.
“So we can’t yet say that Spurs have got a clear run at Gomes, but they’re one of the clubs that are firmly interested.
“And I’d be surprised if West Ham succeed with their offer, despite the relatively lucrative finances on offer.”
