U21s: Lincoln 3 United 0

Tuesday 30 September 2025 20:53

Manchester United’s Under-21s were beaten 3-0 by League One side Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Goals from Tom Hamer, Erik Ring and Reeco Hackett secured victory for the Imps despite a valiant display from Travis Binnion’s side.

Shea Lacey and James Scanlon both went close for United across the 90 minutes, but our best chance fell the way of Jack Fletcher.

The midfielder was denied by City defender Lewis Montsma with his strike almost certain to find the net, if not for a fine goalmouth interception.

FIRST HALFIt took 16 minutes of toing and froing before Binnion’s side had a meaningful attempt on goal, with Scanlon stinging the palms of Zach Jeacock with a near-post effort.

Justin Obikwu then danced into the penalty area for the hosts soon after, before Will Murdock was called into action to deny him.

Murdock was then needed again to deny Lincoln’s no.20 again, with this time it was Dexter Lembikisa teeing him up.

A free-kick from Lacey was blocked by his own team-mate in Chido Obi as we reached the interval, with Scanlon then denied at close range as the first half drew to a close.

SECOND HALFMichael Skubala’s side took the lead with the second half only two minutes old, as Ivan Varfolomeev’s corner was thundered home by Hamer to open the scoring.

Lacey again seemed the brightest of our sparks, cutting into the box before bending his left-footed strike over the crossbar.

Our best of the encounter fell the way of Fletcher on 56 minutes, with his shot cleared off the line by Montsma.

The Imps then added a second with 20 minutes remaining, as Ring was found at the back post by Lembikisa, with the former smashing home from close range via the crossbar.

Substitute Hackett was then put clean through to make it three before missing the target entirely.

Rob Street bared down on goal as Skubala’s men continued to up the ante, before a killer blow was dealt late on.

Hackett made no mistake as he was found unmarked inside the box for a second time on 88 minutes, with his shot coming back off the post and nestling into the bottom corner.

Murdock kept the score at three making a fine save to deny Street in additional time, before Jack Fletcher saw his late strike pushed away by Jeacock in the game’s final action.
