Surprise European side opens talks to sign United defender, but INEOS are running out of time to strike a deal – report

Turkish side Eyüpspor have reportedly opened talks to sign Tyrell Malacia with Manchester United desperate to shift the Dutch defender.

The last ‘bomb squad’ member

Malacia, 26, was designated a member of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ – a group of players with no future at Old Trafford under the Portuguese coach – this summer.

United were intent on finding new homes for the five undesirables, which also included Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

The club were successful for these four stars with Antony and Garnacho sealing permanent switches to Real Betis and Chelsea, while temporary exists were agreed for Sancho to move to Villa and Rashford to join Barcelona on season-long loans.

United were locked in talks as the transfer window drew to a close for Liga minnow Elche to sign Malacia on loan. But an agreement could not be reached over an obligation to buy at the end of the year, and the deal fell through.

This left the left-back as the last remaining member of Amorim’s bomb squad, though the head coach has stressed he would reintegrate any who remained past the September 1 deadline.

Markets remain open elsewhere

Despite the English transfer window slamming shut on Monday, markets remain open in countries such as Belgium, Turkey and Saudi Arabia – with Malacia having been linked to clubs in the latter two earlier in the summer.

Journalist Reşat Can Özbudak now reveals Eyüpspor – currently tenth-place in the Turkish Super Lig – have “begun talks” to sign the 26-year-old defender with Turkey’s window not closing until September 12.

Translated Tweet: “EXCLUSIVE | Eyüpspor has begun talks for Tyrell Malacia, who wears the Manchester United jersey!”

This gives United a week to reach an agreement for Malacia, who spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, who won the Eredivisie on the final day of a dramatic campaign in Holland.

However, PSV chose not to turn the Dutchman’s move into a permanent one after a series of unimpressive performances in his homeland and he returned to Old Trafford in June.

United will be hoping this option from Turkey ends with a more successful conclusion given Amorim has no place for Malacia in his squad this season.
