Man United have been having conversations with Harry Maguire about signing a contract extension, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that talks between the club and his representatives are ongoing to ensure he doesn’t leave when his current deal expires at the end of the season:
“Harry Maguire’s contract remains an important topic between Manchester United and the agents of the player. Two meetings already took place, one directly at Carrington, talks will continue.”
“The salary is going to be an important part of the conversation, but I can guarantee to you that Maguire is really, really open to staying with Manchester United and to try to find a solution with the club.”
“So, the conversations will continue. Remember that his contract is expiring this summer 2026, and doesn’t include an option to extend. So, the option was one year ago that was activated. The contract was extended till 2026. Now, Harry Maguire has to negotiate a completely new contract with Manchester United. Discussions are ongoing but the numbers must be different and so talks are underway.”
Maguire is keen to stay at Old Trafford
Speaking after scoring the winner against Liverpool on Sunday, the 32-year-old suggested that it could be “the last time” he plays at Anfield, hinting that he may leave the Red Devils when his contract expires.
However, Romano claims that Maguire would like to stay if a deal can be agreed, and the fact that discussions are happening indicates that a resolution is being sought by both sides.
Man United want the defender to reduce his salary
As Romano mentions, the main bone of contention is believed to be wages. The Red Devils reportedly want Maguire to take a pay cut.
The centre-back is currently taking home roughly £190,000 a week, so it remains to be seen whether he is willing to earn less than that figure.
