Manchester United have failed in an attempt to sign Emiliano Martinez on loan from Aston Villa this week.
Despite all reports suggesting the Red Devils are not actively looking to offload Andre Onana, it does seem as though they are planning for 2025/2026 without him being the first-choice between the sticks, which isn’t the best look considering they forked out £47 million to sign him only two years ago.
Nonetheless, Martinez is a concrete name on the shortlist. He’s been linked with an Old Trafford switch on numerous occasions in recent weeks, with United now making their interest clear to Villa.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed today that United made an approach to the Midlands outfit in hopes of taking the shot-stopper on loan. Unsurprisingly, the offer was swiftly rebuffed.
Martinez is contracted to the Villans until 2029 after signing a bumper deal last year, so they’re under no pressure to offload him – not least to a direct Premier League rival. Add that to the fact he’s still Unai Emery’s No.1, and United will certainly have to pull their finger out if a deal is to be agreed.
That being said, Romano did previously claim that Martinez is essentially waiting on a call from the Reds, having been attracted to the prospect of representing the 20-time champions following a stellar five-year stint at Villa.

The 32-year-old is renowned as one of the world’s best in his position – and he’s got the accolades to back it up. Martinez earned the Golden Glove in the year he played an influential role in Argentina being crowned World Cup winners in 2022, whilst he also did so during their triumphs at the 2021 and 2024 Copa America.
He’s been named The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper on two occasions and won the Yashin Trophy twice, making it no surprise INEOS have identified him to provide some stability in Ruben Amorim’s leaky defensive contingent.
