Robson relishing Celtic reunion

Bryan Robson is taking charge of Manchester United Legends again, for Saturday’s game against Celtic at Parkhead.

The charity fixture kicks off at 14:00 BST and tickets are still available to see a team of former Reds take on their Celtic counterparts.

The sides met at Old Trafford last year, with Wayne Rooney’s brilliant goal cancelled out by Gary Hooper, before the Bhoys won a penalty shootout.

This time around, United are looking to exact revenge, in what promises to be a special occasion in Glasgow.

United favourite Brian McClair is on the opposing side, on this occasion, as he will be in the dugout, managing the side along with Tosh McKinlay and Tom Boyd.

“It will be good to see Choccy,” Robson told us. “I haven’t seen him for quite a few months but me and him roomed together for a couple of years, when we were both at United. Choccy has done quite a lot of sportsman’s dinners with me. I’ve done a lot with him.

“It will be good to see him. He’s got such a dry sense of humour!

“We’ve played a few of exhibition games for the Foundation and they’ve always been great, well-supported. We always thank the fans for that. We’ve had some great games – Barcelona, Real Madrid. Celtic gave us a right good game last year, when they came down to Old Trafford.

“All the lads are looking forward to the game up at Celtic, they’ve got great charisma and a great fanbase, who are passionate about their football. All the boys are looking forward to going up to Glasgow.

“I enjoy it because you see a lot of people who you’ve played against and people who have done fantastically well in football,” Robbo added. “There are some right characters, which is great. The main thing is that it’s great charities that benefit from these games. The United lads know how important it is for our Foundation and, of course, the Celtic Foundation.

“It goes to great causes in the community. It’s really worthwhile and the lads know how lucky they are to have been able to play football at a high level and represent clubs like Celtic and Man United.

“I’ve only played in a couple of friendly games at Celtic Park, we never drew Celtic when I played for West Brom or Man United, so never in a competitive game.

“When I played for England against Scotland up at Hampden, it was always a great atmosphere. Celtic, even in friendly games, is always a great atmosphere as well. They are very different challenges. I wish I could still play! But it’s nice to be involved, even as a coach or manager of these games, it’s great to work with the lads. It’s great that the lads get do it for the Foundation.

“It never goes away, that feeling when you’re a professional footballer and you’re playing games, friendlies or not, you want to win the game and that’s how the lads go about it. It should be a competitive game, that’s the way that the players always play, whether it’s a friendly or a testimonial, that’s the way I expect them to approach it.

“I think the lads would like to even it up by winning the game, but it was a great game last year and two spectacular goals both teams scored. They will want to turn it around this time.”

Wayne Rooney scored this special free-kick when the Legends faced Celtic last year.

United’s squad will be confirmed in due course but the likes of Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov are expected to take part.

Tickets are priced at £18 for adults and £9 for concessions.

United supporters can purchase seats in the away section here but please note you will be required to create an account on Celtic’s website.
