Old Trafford: Police charges add to latest controversy at Man United

Manchester United have become embroiled in controversy after several individuals working at Old Trafford were charged by the police.

Location

The events occurred in April 2025 as the 2024/2025 season was drawing to a close.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s side played out a 0-0 draw with rivals Manchester City as their season petered out, ultimately resulting in a shambolic 15th-place finish.

Events

The Daily Mail report that, “five stewards have been charged with assault after a Manchester United fan was allegedly attacked at Old Trafford following the Manchester derby last year.”

The men are accused of assaulting a supporter who was taking part in a sit-in protest after the match had finished.

Protests were planned due to the club’s decision earlier that year to scrap concessions for OAPs and children, as well as to increase season ticket prices.

The incidents are said to have taken place in the East Stand of Old Trafford.

According to the paper, “Mohammed Jamil Akbar, 22, Yaseen Islam, 24, and Mohammed Uzair Iqbal, 24, all from Oldham, Favour Stevenson, 28, from Rochdale, and Usman Hussain, 36, from Manchester, have been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and are due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on January 7 next year.”

It must be stressed that none of the five men were employees of Manchester United but were working for Controlled Solutions Group (CSG), a security company which the club hires to provide support on match days.

Neither Manchester United nor CSG have commented on the matter at this time.

The Red Devils have found themselves in further controversy after news broke earlier this week that a clampdown on touting has seen thousands of fans have their accounts locked and season tickets revoked.

Manchester United will kick off their season at Old Trafford on 30 August against Ipswich Town.
