The son of legendary Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has embarked on a major career progression, drawing proud acclaim from his father and several of his former teammates.
Big step
Ferdinand’s oldest son, Lorenz, has signed his first professional contract with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.
Unlike his father who was a defender, Lorenz is a goalkeeper. He had been in Brighton’s youth set-up since 2022.
Lorenz currently plays for Brighton’s Under-21s, having made the step up from Under-18 level. As a show of faith to his abilities and future potential, the Seagulls have handed him a pro deal.
The 19-year-old helped Brighton reach the Sussex Transport Senior Cup final last season.
He also had a short spell at non-league side Havant and Waterlooville on a work experience loan.
Lorenz will now look to build on this encouraging progress and push for a more influential role in the Brighton first team under Fabian Hürzeler.
Brighton finished eighth last season.
Reactions
Ferdinand and his wife Kate took to social media to express their pride at Lorenz putting pen to paper on professional terms.
They wrote on Instagram, “Very proud moment for the family, Lorenz signing his first professional contract.”
“We are all so proud of you.”
A number of Ferdinand’s former teammates also took the time to congratulate Lorenz and wish him good luck for the future.
Dutch icon Edwin van der Sar commented, “Come on Lorenz and become the GK that you always wanted to be! Good luck and safe hands!”
Patrice Evra wrote, “Amazing.”
Meanwhile, Michael Carrick and his players are next in action on Saturday when they face Atletico Madrid at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
