Official: Man United Women to take on Atletico Madrid as historic CL campaign enters exciting new phase

Manchester United Women have discovered who they will face next in the Champions League. Historic campaign United already made history by qualifying for the league phase for the first time in their history with a 3-1 aggregate win over SK Brann in September. Marc Skinner‘s side were far from content with just qualifying, though. They went on to win four of their six games, including impressive away victories against Atletico Madrid and Juventus. The impressive 1-0 victory in Turin on Wednesday meant that United finished the league stage in sixth place. Whilst this means they missed out on automatic qualification to the quarter-final stage by one point, they have been seeded, meaning they will play their second match of the last sixteen tie at home. Atletico Madrid The club’s official website reports that “the draw for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase has pitted Manchester United Women against Atletico Madrid, in the play-offs.” United, of course, already have experience of playing against the Spanish side, when a Fridolina Rolfo goal was enough to secure a win. The site reports that, “the matches are due to take place on 12 and 19 February respectively, with kick-offs scheduled for 20:00 GMT.” Crucially, the second game will take place at the Progress with Unity Stadium, with a raucous home fan base getting behind their team. Next stages Were United to find their way past Atletico, they would face Bayern Munich in the quarter-final. United recently played the Germans in the final of the W7F tournament, with the Red Devils narrowly losing 1-2. If Skinner’s side managed to overcome the Bavarians, they are on the same side of the draw as Paris FC, Real Madrid and Barcelona, in what would all be glamour ties. United will be in action tomorrow when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-final of the League Cup in the final match before the Christmas break.
