There are some divides in club football that players generally don’t want to cross. The Madrid-Barcelona divide, the Manchester-Merseyside Red divide and similarly, the Manchester Blue-Red divide.
Of course, there are so many other rivalries that can be listed out. However, it is always baffling when a Manchester City player is linked with a Man Utd move and vice versa.
News – Decision made by £35m-£39m star after Man United hold talks to sign him – Report
Now, as per Football Transfers, Man United had held surprise talks to sign Man City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. The German has been placed on the transfer list with the arrival of James Trafford this summer.
Man Utd, of course, need a new goalkeeper. Andre Onana has failed to convince with his performances in the past couple of seasons. He is now currently out injured.
Even as the Cameroonian international continues to recover from a torn hamstring, Ruben Amorim might want to bring in a new goalkeeper who would prove to be more reliable than Onana.
Ortega, without any doubt, has had his moments in a Manchester City jersey. He has proven himself to be much better than being just a backup goalkeeper to Ederson.
The surprising thing here is that the report mentions that the German goalkeeper is willing to secure the move to Old Trafford. It is a clear indication that he is willing to cross the divide.
One wonders how the fans would react to this news. There is no love lost between the Blue army and the Red army of Manchester but Ortega hasn’t necessarily done anything so far to go down as a City legend.
Even if this transfer does happen, it is unlikely to garner the same kind of attention that the Carlos Tevez transfer garnered. Ortega, as a player, would suit Amorim’s system.
It could all come down to the player’s preference and if the two clubs want to make this deal happen. Only time will tell if the £90,000 a week star finds himself swapping the Blue for the Red next season.
