Manchester United relieved some of the pressure on themselves with an impressive performance against Sunderland at Old Trafford last weekend. The game ended 2–0 in favour of Ruben Amorim’s side.
The Portuguese tactician came into the fixture desperately needing a win. United had lost their previous game against Brentford, a result that did not sit well with the fans, and Amorim will hope that last weekend’s victory marks the beginning of something positive.
While results on the pitch have been inconsistent, there appears to be no lack of ambition off it, particularly in the transfer market. One of United’s summer signings, Senne Lammens, delivered an impressive debut against Sunderland.
According to SPORT, the Red Devils are now among a host of clubs exploring the situation of Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen. The 33-year-old goalkeeper is currently injured and appears to be out of favour under Hansi Flick.
The German international has been Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper for the better part of the past decade. However, this summer, Flick decided to replace him with Joan García, sparking a wave of controversy at the Catalan club.
With Premier League sides aware that ter Stegen may seek regular playing time to maintain his fitness ahead of the World Cup, interest in him is growing. Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have reportedly joined United in the race for his signature.
Manchester United seem to have made a promising addition between the posts in Lammens. However, with Altay Bayindir struggling to impress of late, signing a backup like ter Stegen could prove to be a shrewd move.
The German’s experience could be invaluable, and his presence would allow the young Belgian to settle gradually into the demands of English football. It remains to be seen how this situation unfolds in the coming weeks and months.
