Maguire faces fresh setback in bid to clear his name as Greek court case development emerges – report

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has suffered a major blow in his attempt to clear his name, with his Greek court case facing yet another setback.

Maguire determined to prove his innocence

Maguire was arrested in the summer of 2020 on the Greek island of Mykonos, following an altercation on a family holiday.

Maguire was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery, resulting in a suspended 21-month prison sentence. The conviction was automatically overturned upon appeal, as stipulated by Greek law.

What has followed since has been a lengthy process for the England international to prove his innocence and finally set the record straight.

Maguire’s trial was initially postponed in May 2023 due to the unavailability of his legal counsel. It was later delayed again in February 2024, this time as a result of a nationwide lawyers’ strike. It was pushed back for a third time in March this year.

The 32-year-old has consistently maintained that he did nothing wrong and has been yearning to prove so in court.

There was optimism that he would get a chance to do just that today (Wednesday), but the retrial has been postponed again.

Maguire suffers setback

The Daily Mail reveal, “The long-awaited hearing was due to begin in Syros on Wednesday morning, and Maguire’s defence team were in court ready to clear his name, but it has been put back yet again until March of next year.”

“There is even a possibility that it will never come to trial at all because the statute of limitations in Greece takes effect after eight years in August 2028.”

The newspaper adds that Maguire was not required to attend court in person.

Maguire is currently having some time off with his family after being snubbed by Thomas Tuchel in the latest England selection.

United are back in action on Sunday, October 19, when they make their way to Anfield to face Liverpool.
