Manchester United are reportedly leading the race for Athletic Club talisman Oihan Sancet, but his club are not willing to let him go without a fight.
United interested in Sancet
Over the past few seasons, Sancet has emerged as one of the best players in La Liga, playing a crucial role in Athletic’s success as one of the best teams in the division.
Primarily an attacking midfielder by trade, Sancet notched an impressive 15 goals and one assist in 29 top-flight appearances last term. He also scored twice and assisted as may times in the Europa League.
So far in 2025/26, Sancet has scored one goal in seven La Liga games.
United have been linked with the Spaniard before. In May, a report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that United were eyeing Sancet as a potential replacement for Bruno Fernandes, who was being courted by the Saudi Pro League at the time.
More recently, it was stated that United have not been deterred by Sancet’s €80 million price tag, with the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur also keen on adding him to their ranks.
Now, Fichajes report that United are “the leading candidate” to snap up Sancet, but Athletic want to offer him a new deal to ward off suitors.

Fichajes contend, “The Red Devils are looking for creative talent to bolster their attacking midfield, and the Navarrese footballer fits the profile desired by Old Trafford perfectly.”
“The club acknowledges that his departure would be a significant blow. However, the growing interest from Premier League teams makes retaining him increasingly difficult. The €70 million Manchester United is reportedly willing to offer marks a turning point in his future.”
It’s believed that United have repeatedly sent scouts to watch Sancet in action.
The 20-time English champions value the 25-year-old’s versatility. He is effective in different formations and in addition to attacking midfielder, can also be deployed in the false nine role.
Athletic haven’t “given up” and are working to offer Sancet a new contract that will cement his status as a key player both for the future and the current sporting project.
While his focus remains on Athletic, Sancet has not ruled out the possibility of an exit if United come calling.
