Man Utd are “looking at” making a move for Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs confirmed that the 23-year-old is on the Red Devils’ radar: “One player they really like that’s a new name that I can bring to the mix, is Charlie Cresswell, who used to be at Leeds United, England U21 international.” “Wolfsburg came very close to signing him in January, but they were not able to meet the Toulouse valuation, so he’s still there, he’s playing every week in Ligue 1, and along with a few other names, he’s one of the profiles that Man United are looking at.” What is Cresswell’s asking price? As Jacobs mentioned, Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg failed in their attempts to bring in the defender during the January transfer window. When reporting on the story, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein said the German side were prepared to pay upwards of €25m (£22m) for Cresswell, but Toulouse wanted “in excess” of €30m (£26m). That fee would probably not put off United, but there are still no guarantees that the Manchester club will pursue a centre-half this summer. Man Utd have other priorities Director of Football Jason Wilcox is expected to focus the club’s recruitment on signing a central midfielder, a left winger and a left-back. A centre-back may have been required if Harry Maguire left on a free transfer, but it is now looking likely that the 33-year-old will be given a one-year contract extension. The former is still struggling with a back problem that has kept him sidelined since late November, while the latter has found it difficult to stay available over the last two years.
