International round-up: Reds enjoy wins

The first batch of internationals involving Manchester United players featured some comprehensive wins for our Reds.

Overnight in South America, Brazil defeated Chile 3-0 as one of the favourites to lift next year’s World Cup remain in second spot in the table, behind fierce rivals Argentina.

It was an eventful game for Casemiro. Our experienced midfielder headed home after only five minutes, only to see the effort disallowed for offside, and was booked for a foul in first-half stoppage time that Chile’s players wanted upgrading to a red card.

By then, Estevao Willian of Chelsea had acrobatically opened the scoring and further strikes by fellow Premier League stars Lucas Paqueta (West Ham United) and Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United) followed, after Case was substituted in the 66th minute.

Matheus Cunha pulled out of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad due to injury but Manuel Ugarte featured for Uruguay, in their 3-0 victory over Peru in the same section.

Rodrigo Aguirre, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Federico Vinas scored as the hosts registered 24 shots in Montevideo.

Ugarte came off the bench in the 69th minute and had a spectacular impact as he sparked a quick transition for the third goal, bursting forward to find Brian Rodriguez, who centred for Vinas to net.

The win guaranteed Uruguay’s place in the finals in style.

Bryan Mbeumo continued his good form and Andre Onana kept a clean sheet in Cameroon’s 3-0 success against Eswatini.

Our recent signing from Brentford saw his cross headed into his own net by Gift Gamedze early on and then supplied the assist for Georges-Kevin Nkoudou to double the advantage. Arthur Avom added a third to keep Cameroon in second spot, behind group leaders Cape Verde.

In Europe, Altay Bayindir was an unused substitute in Turkey’s 3-2 triumph in Georgia and  Matthijs de Ligt did not get off the bench in the Netherlands’ 1-1 home draw with Poland.

James Scanlon played the full 90 minutes for Gibraltar, as they lost 1-0 at home to Albania in a friendly.
