Ineos cut yet another United legend’s salary in latest savings shakeup – The Athletic

David Gill

Manchester United’s former CEO David Gill £1 million-per-year deal has been cut by Ineos.

Gill was famously the club’s CEO between 2003 and 2013 and enjoyed an incredibly successful working relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

He has since held positions such as Britain’s FIFA Vice-President and was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee.

Meanwhile, new owners Ineos have gone about undertaking significant change behind the scenes and have implemented numerous cost-cutting measures.

They have received heavy scrutiny in the media for reducing the staff numbers by 250 and also hiking up the price of matchday tickets for fans.

The Athletic report that this also extends to board member David Gill.

“Gill’s own £1m-per-year deal has also been cut. The change has been described as very amicable, with the former CEO reportedly “understanding of the wider cost-cutting regime.”

Nonetheless, there has been a massive difference in how the Glazers and Ineos have gone about looking after legends of the football club.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s removal as an ambassador “caused reverberations at the club — he has been a much less frequent visitor since his meeting with Ratcliffe to discuss the matter.”

There is also said to be further cuts planned further down the line on former players who attend matches, with some former stars expressing “difficulties in gaining access to the directors’ box.”

“The Glazers saw value in tapping into United’s heritage, but Ratcliffe feels such employment is largely unnecessary and an overhaul was required to better use club resources. It is part of his view that spending should be primarily aimed at events on the pitch.”

Another such example of Ineos’ supposed lack of interest in legends of the club was when Sir Alex Ferguson had to step in to protect Sir Matt Busby’s family from losing their privileges at Old Trafford.

Whilst Ineos’ cost-cutting will be applauded if it allows United to spend in the transfer market and give Ruben Amorim a fighting chance, they are also playing with fire taking such a callous attitude to those who have helped build the club into what it is today.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
