Hard-hitting United executive willing to “ruffle feathers” to show club can no longer be held to ransom in the market – report

Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, has reportedly “ruffled a few feathers” during transfer negotiations, with some even accusing him of causing setbacks through the way he handles key details.

Wilcox arrived at United in April last year, initially as technical director. United lured him away from Southampton shortly after Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his partial investment in the club and in doing so, became co-owner alongside the Glazer family.

Wilcox has experienced a swift rise at United, earning praise for his sharp recruitment acumen and significant contributions to enhancing the club’s academy operations.

He is also said to maintain regular communication with Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff, acting as a bridge between the first team and the club’s hierarchy.

Following Dan Ashworth’s shock departure in December, Wilcox took on a significant portion of the responsibilities and duties previously handled by the ousted sporting director. He excelled in this role, leading to his recent promotion as the club’s new director of football.

While Ratcliffe, Berrada, and Amorim have all spoken glowingly of Wilcox and his contributions to the club. The Athletic reveals that not everyone is as big of an admirer of the man. There are some who have been left unimpressed with his approach, particularly when it comes to transfers.

It’s understood that Wilcox’s way of working has “ruffled feathers at times.”

The Athletic explain, “When the type of obstacles that inevitably crop up during transfer talks have arisen, from the scale of a particular transfer fee to the level of wage contribution in loan deals, some on the other side of the table have seen United’s new director of football as reluctant to find solutions and difficult to sway.”

“By adopting, and often refusing to budge from, hard red lines, some sources argue that Wilcox has at times allowed good deals to unnecessarily break down. Although it could be fairly argued that he has simply served the best interests of the club, some of those who have dealt with Wilcox contend this intransigence has ultimately forced United to settle for inferior terms further down the line.”

But, that is not a unanimous opinion. Others view Wilcox as one of the “most impressive operators” at his level and they appreciate his “authoritative” style.

The 53-year-old rarely says more than he needs to and usually keeps conversations straight to the point.

The Athletic note that Wilcox, Berrada and chief business officer Marc Armstrong are the highest-ranking decision-making body at United, just below the owners.
