Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho has opened up on how he was treated at Manchester United during his last days at the club.
Garnacho joins Chelsea
After progressing through United’s ranks, Garnacho earned his first-team debut in 2022. His standout performances in the academy had already endeared him to supporters, and he established himself as a regular almost instantly.
However, towards the end of last season, his relationship with Ruben Amorim irreparably broke down after the winger slammed the head coach’s decision to name him on the bench for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Amorim responded by informing Garnacho to look for a new club before he included him in the infamous ‘bomb squad.’
After months of speculation over his future, Garnacho finally sealed a £40m move to Chelsea. He put pen to paper on a contract running until 2032.
The Argentine has endured a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge, primarily having to be content with a place on the bench, but he made a significant contribution in the Blues’ 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica on Tuesday. It was his cutback that struck Richard Rios before flying into the back of the net.
After the final whistle, Garnacho spoke to the media and was asked about the closing stages of his tenure at United.
While he refused to drag the Red Devils’ name through the mud, he insisted that his exile from the first team was “a bad moment in life.”

He told TNT Sports [as quoted by The Mirror], “I think it was a difficult moment there, just training alone.”
“But I have nothing bad to say about the club, my old club Manchester United.”
“It was just a bad moment in life but now I’m very happy to be here and to play in this competition and to get the three points today.”
United included a sell-on clause in Garnacho’s move to Chelsea, ensuring they stand to gain significantly from any future transfer.
