Former United star receives six-month ban from football-related activities for engaging in “reprehensible conduct”

Former Manchester United defender Juan Sebastian Veron has landed himself in hot water following a fresh controversy. It’s been a turbulent season so far for Man United, with their recent winning streak being overshadowed by an embarrassing defeat at home to ten-man Everton. Still, it’s not only the United faithful who remain at Old Trafford who have been having a tough time as of late. Veron, too, finds himself in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Up in arms Currently the president of Estudiantes de La Plata, Veron and his players were furious after a change to the rules of the Argentine Primera División resulted in an unexpected champion being crowned. Traditionally, Argentina’s league is split into two phases – the Apertura and the Clausura. The winners of both phases would then meet in the end-of-year Champions Trophy. While this will still occur, the Argentine Football Association decided to name Rosario Central as the 2025 ‘League Champion’ after they amassed the highest points tally over the course of the entire season spanning the two phases. At face value, this certainly doesn’t seem like a big deal. On the one hand, the Champions Trophy will still be contested. On the other hand, Rosario would be winning the league in the same manner as clubs in the Premier League and the rest of Europe do. Still, Veron was not charmed, and he and his players decided to make their frustration known. Controversy hits During Estudiantes’ match against Rosario Central, Veron’s side refused to form a guard of honour for the newly-crowned league champions. While it appeared as if they were initially preparing to do so, all of the Estudiantes players turned their backs as the Rosario lineup made their way onto the pitch. Für diese Aktion:– kriegen alle Estudiantes-Spieler eine Zwei-Spiele-Sperre– wird Estudiantes-Präsident Juan Sebastián Verón für 6 Monate gesperrt– darf IV Santiago Núñez 3 Monate lang nicht als Kapitän auflaufen pic.twitter.com/LSdaQb2xHW — Tim✍️⚽️🇦🇹 (@tim23at) November 28, 2025 As a result, the AFA handed Veron “a six-month suspension from all football-related activities”, as reported by Reuters. In addition, all of the players who “engaged in the reprehensible conduct” were handed two-match bans, the AFA added. The organisation was kind enough to add that the players would not serve the bans in the same matches so that the team is not too heavily impacted all at once.
