“Exactly what we need”: United star waxes lyrical over impact of new summer signings

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has claimed the club are determined to right the wrongs of last season’s abysmal performances this year.

Pain of last year

The Red Devils finished 15th in the league, sacking Erik ten Hag in October and Ruben Amorim taking over in less than ideal circumstances at the end of November.

Speaking to the The Daily Mirror Mount stated, “the whole season hurt. But this is a new slate now. We’re looking forward to performing. We want to perform as a group. We know last season wasn’t good enough so now it’s about kicking on.”

He claimed that a significant aspect of pre-season training is “looking at what you can do better, how you can be better for your team-mates and perform as a group”. He also added that the team know last season was not good enough and that they are “ready to put right that wrong.”

Pain of Europa League defeat

Mount played a significant role in the latter stages of the Europa League, scoring two goals in the semi-final second leg against Athletic Club.

He also started the final which they would narrowly lose 0-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.

Commenting on the loss he stated that it took “quite a long time” to get over the defeat. He explained, “I’ve had quite a few losses in finals, so it’s not easy. It never gets any easier, for sure.”

Staying fit this season

Since Mount’s £55 million move to Old Trafford in 2023, he has been blighted with injury.

He missed four months of last season and is aiming to finally have a proper bite of the cherry this season.

He claimed, “when you’re at a club like Manchester United, there has to be that competition there to perform and as a group we want to win and we’re all in that together.”

Competition for places

Ruben Amorim has been very complimentary of Mount as a footballer in the past but it seems he may struggle for first team minutes with the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for the number 10 roles.

Speaking on the new signings he claimed, “the new lads who have come in have been brilliant in training so far and the first couple of weeks is never easy.”

Mount elaborated, “it’s about integrating them into the group and making them feel as comfortable as possible and I think we’ve all done that.”

He also claimed that the fact they are Premier League proven players will also aid their adaptation to the club and that they will bring “exactly what we need to the team.”

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
