A return to Serie A is on the cards for former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, with Sassuolo potentially set to become his next destination.
Matic’s time at United
Matic joined United in July 2017 from Premier League rivals Chelsea. Then-manager Jose Mourinho sanctioned a swoop worth around £40m for the player.
The Serbian went on to make 189 appearances for United across a five-year spell, scoring four goals and providing an additional 11 assists in that period.
United had the option of extending Matic’s stay by an additional 12 months but they opted against exercising it, allowing him to leave as a free agent.
Matic did not win any major piece of silverware while at Old Trafford.
Since parting ways with United, Matic has been a bit of a journeyman. He turned out for AS Roman, Rennes and more recently, Olympique Lyonnais.
However, amidst Lyon’s financial troubles, a decision was made to terminate his contract last week. He is therefore available on the market and according to Sky Italy, Sassulo are emerging as an option for him.
Matic could be heading to Sassuolo
Sky Italy reveal that Matic and his representatives recently held “positive” talks with Sassuolo chiefs.
“After two seasons in France, Nemanja Matic could return to Italy. In the past few hours, the player and his agents met with Fabio Grosso and Giovanni Carnevali, Sassuolo ‘s coach and CEO.”
“The meeting was positive, with Matic seeking a new challenge to work with young players and be a point of reference.”
“There’s no agreement yet on the financial side, but negotiations are underway and further developments are expected.”
Sky Italy add that there are other unnamed clubs also keen on adding the 37-year-old to their ranks. All signs point to Matic still remaining in Europe as he sees out the final years of his career.
