Manchester United put their faith in Ruben Amorim in November last year, but a year later, he is yet to take them to the promised land. Fresh from turning Sporting’s fortunes around, the Portuguese was expected to help the Red Devils rise like a phoenix from the ashes of disappointment. Unfortunately, Amorim’s magic is yet to unfurl at the Theatre of Dreams. United finished fifteenth in the league table last season and a 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur only compounded their woes. Amid calls for the Portuguese head coach’s head over the summer, INEOS held firm and even backed him in the transfer market by investing over £200 million in the squad. Slow progress United are now seventh in the Premier League table after 13 games, three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa. Amorim’s side have won six and lost four in the league this season, scoring 21 goals and conceding 20. The Red Devils secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, displaying great character to come back from a goal down. While there have been positive signs this season, Amorim’s record at Old Trafford does not make for a great read, especially compared to his time with Sporting. However, United legend David Beckham reckons United are in good hands. Beckham praises Amorim Speaking to Sky Sports, Beckham said: “I think there are signs of the manager turning things around. He has tweaked a few things and we are coming into a few better results.” “There’s still a long way to go and there has been a few games where we haven’t been playing as well. But I think we’ve got a good manager there and I think he is changing things slowly.” Beckham previously gave a scathing assessment of the team’s performances following the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League in September. However, United have significantly improved since that loss, winning five and losing two in nine games, and fans have a lot to be optimistic about right now. Final Thoughts United have not had much luck with managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and the constant chopping and changing has not helped either. INEOS’ decision to back Amorim over the summer, as such, was a bold move, but one that could pay dividends in the long run. If Amorim can sign one of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba or Adam Wharton in 2026, there is a chance that the Red Devils could be back challenging for silverware soon. Manchester United have had more shots (194) than any other side in the Premier League so far this season.
