Chelsea rival United for “outstanding” 21-yo PL monster who would transform Amorim’s midfield – Ben Jacobs

Manchester United’s need for a new midfielder is obvious after the Red Devils’ disappointing start to the new season.

A Stalled Engine Room

Ruben Amorim is reported to have requested reinforcements in midfield as the Portuguese coach does not believe he has sufficient athleticism in his engine room.

The former Sporting manager’s trademark system – a 3-4-2-1 set-up with a central pivot – sacrifices midfield superiority in favour of overloads elsewhere on the pitch.

This leads United’s midfield pairing to often face three, or even more, opposition players in the middle of the pitch, requiring excellent physicality and mobility to cope with the disadvantage.

From the current cohort of midfielders at Old Trafford – Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo – none possess the requisite athleticism to effectively handle this demand.

And it’s this reality which will have driven Amorim’s push for a new recruit – but it has proven a difficult search.

Hunting within the Premier League

United’s first-choice midfield target is Brighton starlet, Carlos Baleba.

The 21-year-old Cameroon international has quickly established himself as one of the premier prospects in defensive midfield throughout Europe after an impressive campaign at the Amex Stadium last season.

He combines a potent pairing of pace and physicality with excellent technical ability, demonstrating a remarkable talent for driving through opposition midfields to launch blistering transitions after winning the ball back.

Brighton are adamant Baleba is not for sale, however, safe in the knowledge that a bidding war will erupt next summer for the youngster when they are better placed to deal with his departure.

This has led United to reassess their options – with long-term target Adam Wharton, 21, also being explored as an option.

But Crystal Palace have a similar approach to their seaside rivals over a prized midfield asset with the Eagles not believed to be entertaining Wharton’s exit at this stage of the window, particularly after the exit of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal last week.

It would require an astronomical fee, potentially in excess of £100 million, to bring Palace to the negotiating table – and United’s budget is unlikely to stretch that far, even with the recent exits of Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

But one club who certainly could meet this costly demand is Chelsea, fresh from a mass wave of departures at Stamford Bridge and ready to splash the cash in the final days of the summer window.

Ben Jacobs reveals the Blues have added Wharton to their “list of long-term targets” but consider a deal before Monday’s deadline “difficult”.

Chelsea have added Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton to their list of long-term targets. Tough deal to do before Monday, and nothing yet to suggest anything is advancing, as Palace plan to keep hold of Wharton for at least another year.🦅

Tweet: “Chelsea have added Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton to their list of long-term targets. Tough deal to do before Monday, and nothing yet to suggest anything is advancing, as Palace plan to keep hold of Wharton for at least another year.”

Jacobs further stresses that Palace’s plan is to “keep hold of Wharton for at least another year,” further complicating any pursuit United may launch.

But the reality of a midfield unit at Old Trafford which is unfit for purpose remains – and time is running out for the Red Devils to fix the heartbeat of a team which appears to be drawing closer and closer to flatlining.
