2026 has not been Ayden Heaven’s year, which is disappointing given his brilliant end to 2025. Heaven, who was snapped up from Arsenal at the start of 2025, slowly but surely established himself at the Theatre of Dreams. With Manchester United’s defensive injury struggles, the 19-year-old got his opportunities, and when on the pitch, he dazzled. It was clear that in him, a 6’2″ left-footed centre-back who carries elite composure and the confidence to play out from the back, aided by his history as a midfielder, the Red Devils had landed a baller. Perfect end to the year Well, in December Heaven massively stepped up. With Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez all out, he played a key role in United’s defence. Impressive across the six fixtures the Red Devils played that month, he capped it with a man-of-the-match performance in the 1-0 Boxing Day win over Newcastle United. His exploits saw him crowned United’s December Player of the Month, and while there was hope he would build on those performances and cement his spot in United’s starting XI, that has simply not happened. Since Michael Carrick took over as the caretaker head coach, Heaven has been afforded just eight minutes of football, which is disappointing. Maguire praises Heaven Despite his change in fortunes, Harry Maguire, speaking to MUTV, has been quick to remind everyone just how good the young defender is. On Heaven, Maguire said: “I think Ayden’s got real, real good ability in everything you want from a defender. “He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s really good on the ball, he’s calm, and I do believe Ayden will improve a lot with experience, but he’s a great lad. “He’s willing to learn. He wants to learn.” Most United fans need no convincing of Heaven’s potential; he has already shown it. The hope now is that Carrick gives him a chance. Secret weapon versus Villa With Martínez injured and the Argentine missing United’s last few games, his line-breaking passes and ability to dictate play have been sorely missed. Heaven could offer exactly that, and perhaps as soon as Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa. Carrick just has to give him a chance.
