Man Utd star ‘living out final months’ as INEOS ‘choose replacement’ amid Barcelona transfer ‘bombshell’

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana reportedly ‘could be living out his final months’ at Old Trafford as club chiefs have ‘chosen’ his ‘replacement’.

The Red Devils chose Onana to replace David De Gea after the experienced goalkeeper departed Old Trafford at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The former Inter Milan and Ajax star overcame early-season difficulties to enjoy a strong debut campaign, but he has made plenty of mistakes this term and his long-term future could be in doubt.

Onana is 15th in our ranking of the best Premier League goalkeepers during the 2024/25 campaign and a report earlier this week claimed his future is ‘hanging in the balance’.

Man Utd are already linked with several potential replacements ahead of the summer transfer window and a report in Spain claims they have ‘chosen’ AC Milan standout Mike Maignan as their preferred ‘replacement’.

The report claims:

‘Manchester United are facing a big decision in goal, with Andre Onana’s continuity in question. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has made a series of mistakes that have raised doubts within the club, leading the board to evaluate possible alternatives for next season.

‘In this scenario, Milan appears to be a key factor, as their goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, is one of the main candidates to fill the position that Onana would leave.

‘The Red Devils’ coaching staff considers strengthening the goalkeeping department to be a priority and, in light of this situation, they have set their sights on Maignan, a reliable goalkeeper who could offer greater security.’

Alejandro Garnacho is also linked with an exit and another report in Spain claims Barcelona are considering a shock move for the Argentina international in a transfer ‘bombshell’.

‘Alejandro Garnacho is going through a period of uncertainty at Manchester United. Despite his undeniable talent, his relationship with Ruben Amorim is not going through its best stage, as the Portuguese coach has not seen the winger have the necessary attitude and commitment at certain times this season.

‘Given this situation, Barcelona has begun to closely monitor his situation, considering that he could be an interesting addition to their squad.

‘The young attacker, with Spanish roots but internationally known for Argentina, has shown himself to be a player with speed and the ability to make a difference in one-on-one situations.

‘However, his continuity at Old Trafford has been put in doubt due to certain episodes that have not completely convinced the technical management. If the situation does not change in the coming months, the English club could listen to offers for him in the summer transfer market.

‘At Barcelona, his profile would fit into the team’s playing style. The Catalans are looking for players with the ability to create a difference in the final metres, and Garnacho could be an attractive option.’

Amorim sack? Man Utd ‘look at drastic change’ with Ratcliffe ‘interested’ in shock ‘ideal’ replacement

According to reports, Manchester United are already ‘looking at a change’ with club chiefs ‘interested’ in a potential replacement for Ruben Amorim.

The 40-year-old has endured a nightmare first few months at Man Utd as he’s lost nine of his first 23 games in charge across all competitions.

Amorim inherited a mess but the Red Devils have arguably gone backwards since the former Sporting Lisbon boss replaced former head coach Erik ten Hag.

The United boss has struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation as his current squad is not suited to this system, with his side 14th in our Premier League form table.

There is a long list of issues at Man Utd, so only a small portion of the blame for their woeful season lies with the head coach, but he is coming under increased scrutiny amid a string of poor performances.

READ: Ranking Premier League clubs by how much they should give a damn about the FA Cup

Amorim deserves to be given more time and Man Utd’s limited finances could dissuade them from axeing the head coach, who is the sixth favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked.

Despite this, a report in Spain claims Man Utd are ‘looking at changes to their management’ and are ‘interested’ in Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.

The former Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal boss has worked wonders since replacing Steven Gerrard at Villa Park and he’s one of the most respected managers in Europe.

At this stage, Emery would be daft to leave Aston Villa for Man Utd, so the Villans would surely fancy their chances of keeping the 53-year-old, especially considering there’s likely a lack of substance to this premature report.

Still, Emery is named the ‘most attractive option’ to replace Amorim with Man Utd considering ‘drastic measures’.

‘Manchester United are still looking at possible changes to their management and one of the names that has come up strongly is Unai Emery.

‘Despite having arrived just a few months ago, the Portuguese coach has not been performing as expected, and the pressure around him has been increasing.

‘The Red Devils need immediate results to stay on track and patience with Amorim could soon run out. In this context, Emery’s option has gained strength, as his work at Villa Park has been recognised both in England and in the rest of Europe.

‘His experience in major leagues and European competitions, added to his ability to manage squads of different profiles, make him an ideal candidate to manage a club with the demands of Manchester United. His success at Sevilla, Villarreal and Arsenal further strengthens his candidacy.’

“A top, top, top player”: Amorim lavishes praise on sensational United star growing stronger with every game

When Lisandro Martinez suffered a season-ending knee injury, it came at the worst possible time for Manchester United given the Argentine’s form and importance to Ruben Amorim’s plans.

With the midfield struggling to progress the ball, the World Cup winner consistently drove forward with the ball before using his impeccable passing ability to break the lines.

In fact, before his injury, the Argentina international had four goal contributions including two goals and as many assists under Amorim, more than he had accrued in the two-and-half seasons under Erik ten Hag.

His importance could be gauged from the fact that since the new head coach’s arrival, only Amad, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund had been directly involved in more goals than the former Ajax ace.

Yoro has stepped up in Licha’s absence

Amorim must have feared the worst when Martinez was stretchered off against Crystal Palace in February while INEOS failed to sign a replacement.

But on Wednesday, Leny Yoro stepped up from the left centre-back role and put in a near flawless performance which was reminiscent of what Martinez was offering.

He was not afraid to step into midfield at every given opportunity and he completed 13 out of 14 final third passes against Ipswich, more than any of his teammates on the night. His Cruyff turn on the edge of the Ipswich box was a sight to behold!

And Ruben Amorim was extremely proud of the 19-year-old’s hard work both on and off the pitch, citing his will to improve physically as a contributing factor to what he is achieving on the field.

The former Sporting boss also tipped the defender to enjoy a long and successful career here at Old Trafford and urged him to carry on in the same vein in the games to come.

Amorim full of praise

“He is working really, really hard,” Amorim told MUTV (via MEN). “I think he is gaining muscle, all these small things that you cannot see.

“I think he is going to be a top, top, top player and is going to have a great career here in Manchester. But for that, he knows that he has to prove [himself] in every match, so he is going to be ready for the next one.”

The focus will now shift to the FA Cup as the Red Devils prepare to take on Fulham on Sunday while the Europa League games against Real Sociedad are also coming up.

Both these competitions represent the team’s best shot at qualifying for Europe and for winning silverware this term and Yoro has a huge role to play if the three-time European winners are to end the season on a high.

“He has a knock”: Amorim admits injury scare, United sweating over key star’s participation ahead of FA Cup tie vs Fulham

Manchester United will face Fulham in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Sunday without several key stars who are either injured or suspended.

The Red Devils will be without Patrick Dorgu following his direct red card against Ipswich Town on Wednesday. The Dane’s dubious red means a three-match ban.

Ruben Amorim will also be without the likes of Amad, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Altay Bayindir just to name a few. And there could be worse news on the way.

90min have quoted the head coach as saying that the Argentine had picked up a knock during the game against the Kieran Mckenna’s side.

Garnacho injury scare

The 20-year-old was running with the ball and was on the edge of the box, preparing to pull the trigger before a last-ditch sliding tackle from the Ipswich defender relieved him off the ball.

He was soon substituted after Dorgu’s red card with Noussair Mazraoui brought on in his place as the coach opted to add defensive solidity.

But it seems the decision was also partly necessitated due to a small injury. “Yes, he has a knock, when he went to shoot was blocked inside the box. I expect for him to be ready but we will see,” Amorim said.

Whether the Argentina international is fit enough to face the Cottagers remains to be seen but his importance cannot be questioned given the poor form of Rasmus Hojlund up top.

Controversy galore

The Carrington graduate has not been great when it comes to finishing off chances but he remains the only attacker brave enough to take on his man and attack the box.

He is been in the eye of a storm following his early substitution against the Tractor Boys with his angry walk straight down the tunnel and post-match social media reaction attracting plenty of controversy.

But the player has reportedly made amends following a private talk with the coach and has also promised to pay for the whole team’s dinner.

Amorim will need all hands on deck if he is to end the season on a high with the FA Cup and Europa League being the team’s only shot at making it to Europe next season.

Bruno wins Goal of the Month for February

0

Saturday 01 March 2025 16:00

Bruno Fernandes’s stunning free-kick against Everton has been named our Goal of the Month for February.

It’s been a superb month for our no.8 – who was also named our Player of the Month earlier today for his recent performances.

His delicious set-piece at Goodison Park ignited a fire within United as we came back from 2-0 down to earn a spirited point at Everton earlier this month.

With a tough run of fixtures to come, it is great to see the Bruno we know and love performing so valiantly under Ruben Amorim as of late.

Which is your men’s Goal of the Month for February?

Which is your men’s Goal of the Month for February?

Fernandes had to fight off plenty of stern competition but romped home by claiming the largest portion of the voting cast on ManUtd.com and in our Official App.

His 10th goal of the campaign, Bruno has now reached double figures in both goals and assists in every season as a United player.

Whizzing an effort that flew past Jordan Pickford, Bruno’s goal was soon followed by an additionally-impressive strike from Manuel Ugarte in the 2-2 draw.

“I think in the second half, obviously you’re 2-0 down, you have more freedom because you are already losing, so you have nothing to lose more,” Bruno told TNT Sports after rattling his effort in the net.

“I think you get more of a try to do something else, and that’s why we get the result.”

We all agree our no.8’s effort is one to saviour – so scroll down to relive the moment once more.

Congratulations again Bruno – keep at it!

Saturday 01 March 2025 15:00

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named our Player of the Month for February.

It’s the first time this season our captain has won the award but we can’t think of a more worthy winner for his performances as of late.

Bruno has fended off competition from Harry Maguire and Joshua Zirkzee to claim February’s prize.

In another difficult month for the Reds, Fernandes has epitomized what it means to lead United both on and off the field.

Who is your men’s Player of the Month for February?

Who is your men’s Player of the Month for February?

Fernandes scored a stunning goal at Goodison Park and was named Man of the Match as we fought back to draw 2-2 in a spirited display on Merseyside, against Everton.

He was also in inspired form against Ipswich Town just a few days ago and grabbed a vital assist for Harry Maguire’s powerful header that eventually won the game.

His tireless running and fine leadership across the 90 minutes was well documented and also vitally received by those inside the Theatre of Dreams on Thursday in our 3-2 success.

Bruno also delivered another peach of a delivery for Maguire to head in our winner in the 2-1 FA Cup success over Leicester City on February 7.

We are honoured to crown Fernandes the winner and hope he can continue his rich form in tomorrow’s clash with Fulham in M16.

Congratulations, Bruno!

Chelsea lead 2000s net spend table: Premier League dominates top 20 ranking

Here is a ranking of the top 20 teams with the largest net spend since 2000. Ten Premier League clubs feature.

Figures are via Transfermarkt, which annoyingly deals in Euros. It didn’t make much sense to convert it into sterling because of inflation and all that nonsense.

The 20 lowest net spenders are here…

20) Fulham (England)
Expenditure: €791.90m
Income: €399.37m
Net spend: €-392.54m

Yep, bloody Fulham kick things off.

19) Al Nassr (Saudi Arabia)
Expenditure: €506.89m
Income: €35.93m
Net spend: €-470.96m

Cristiano Ronaldo’s side have very little income this century, unsurprisingly.

18) Inter (Italy)
Expenditure: €2.03bn
Income: €1.56bn
Net spend: €-476.82m

Boy, these guys have been busy.

17) Napoli (Italy)
Expenditure: €1.4bn
Income: €912.35m
Net spend: €-484.91m

Their income could hit a billion if Victor Osimhen is sold in the summer.

16) Aston Villa (England)
Expenditure: €1.37bn
Income: €812.28m
Net spend: €-560.62m

Villa spent an awful lot of wonga in the 2024 summer transfer window but made nearly as much through player sales.

15) Al-Hilal (Saudi Arabia)
Expenditure: €640.47m
Income: €54.74m
Net spend: €-585.74m

Being so high after only a couple of years showing ambition emphasises the power of the Saudi Pro League.

14) West Ham (England)
Expenditure: €1.36bn
Income: €773.35m
Net spend: €-589.97m

Over half of their expenditure went on terrible strikers. Ish.

13) Newcastle United (England)
Expenditure: €1.34bn
Income: €699.73m
Net spend: €-638.10m

Last summer was meant to be more fun.

12) Bayern Munich (Germany)
Expenditure: €1.6bn
Income: €860.17m
Net spend: €-743.77m

Pretty good going for three Champions League titles since the turn of the century. Bayern were pretty busy last summer and Newcastle were not, so they leapfrogged them in this ranking.

11) Liverpool (England)
Expenditure: €2.03bn
Income: €1.23bn
Net spend: €-798.29m

FSG out.

10) AC Milan (Italy)
Expenditure: €1.83bn
Income: €949.10m
Net spend: €-882.15m

Milan have 832 arrivals and 831 departures.

9) Barcelona (Spain)
Expenditure: €2.49bn
Income: €1.54bn
Net spend: €-952.60m

It’s surprising they are not in the top five given the fact they are crippled financially thanks to a number of stupidly expensive signings.

8) Juventus (Italy)
Expenditure: €2.74bn
Income: €1.78bn
Net spend: €-963.64m

Is Juventus the richest Old Lady in the world?

7) Tottenham Hotspur (England)
Expenditure: €2.09bn
Income: €1.11bn
Net spend: €-983.12m

Look at Spurs rolling with the big boys. Surely they have some trophies to show for it, right? Right?

6) Arsenal (England)
Expenditure: €1.92bn
Income: €900.38m
Net spend: €-1,015.24m

Arsenal placed 14th with a net spend of €-280.98m between 00/01 and 17/18 – the season Arsene Wenger left.

5) Real Madrid (Spain)
Expenditure: €2.48bn
Income: €1.42bn
Net spend: €-1,055.15m

Real Madrid do not tend to get big fees for players as the natural end goal for them.

4) Paris Saint-Germain (France)
Expenditure: €2.55bn
Income: €1.04bn
Net spend: €-1,514.97m

That is a big ol’ jump from fifth.

3) Manchester United (England)
Expenditure: €2.72bn
Income: €939.11m
Net spend: €-1,781.06m

They are horrible when it comes to signing players. Oh, and when it comes to selling them.

2) Manchester City (England)
Expenditure: €3.01bn
Income: €1.23bn
Net spend: €-1,782.88m

They bought their success and really do not care. Well, they might if they are found g-g-g-guilty.

1) Chelsea (England)
Expenditure: €3.86bn
Income: €1.96bn
Net spend: €-1,899.67m

The Blues have always been a bit gung-ho in the transfer market, but they have taken things to a whole new level under Todd Boehly. How are you supposed to compete with that?! Quite easily by the looks of it.

Transfer bombshell: United wonderkid could be off to La Liga with Barcelona plotting sensational summer deal – report

Despite Manchester United’s hard-fought come-from-behind win against Ipswich Town on Wednesday, most of the headlines following the game have centred around the conduct of Alejandro Garnacho.

After Patrick Dorgu’s direct red card, Ruben Amorim decided to bring off the Argentine while bringing on Noussair Mazraoui as he looked to shore things up at the back.

The 20-year-old was obviously not pleased as he stormed straight down the tunnel and the head coach was asked about his player’s conduct following the game.

Not only that but the Argentine’s post-match social media activity also attracted the ire of fans and pundits alike, with the media trying to create a major controversy.

Trying to artificially engineer a controversy

But Amorim handled the situation pretty well, holding a private talk with the player while explaining in the pre-match press conference that Garnacho’s punishment would be to treat his teammates to a dinner.

But that has not stopped the rumour mill from going overboard with Fichajes claiming Barcelona are keen to take advantage of the broken relationship between the United coach and winger by trying to secure his signature in the summer.

The Blaugrana outfit feel Garnacho’s speed, dribbling ability perfectly suit what Hansi Flick is looking for while his youth and potential are also huge positives.

“Alejandro Garnacho is experiencing moments of uncertainty at Manchester United. Despite his undeniable talent, his relationship with Rúben Amorim is not going through its best time. Faced with this scenario, Barcelona has started to closely monitor his situation, considering that he could be an interesting addition to their squad.

“His continuity at Old Trafford has been called into question due to certain incidents that have not completely convinced the technical management. If the situation does not change in the coming months, the English club could consider offers for him in the summer market.

Barca eyeing Garnacho

“At Barcelona, his profile would fit the team’s style of play. The Blaugrana squad is looking for players with the ability to create imbalance in the final third, and Garnacho could be an attractive option. Furthermore, his youth and potential make him a signing that would align with the future project that the Catalan entity aims to consolidate.”

Given United’s PSR woes, there have been murmurs that the co-owners could look to sell the United No 17 in the summer should an appropriate offer be tabled.

There was interest from both Chelsea and Napoli in January but nothing came of it. But given the versatile forward’s drop-off in form, Amorim could be open to letting him go.

While no amount has been mentioned in the report, United will look to earn close to £80 million from his sale, a price the Catalan giants will find hard to pay given their own financial woes. So for now, take this report with a huge pinch of salt.

“Training ground sources say”: Amorim absolutely livid with recruitment department for these two reasons – report

INEOS’ decision to offer Erik ten Hag a new contract following the FA Cup triumph last season proved to be a disastrous call as the Dutchman was sacked a couple of months later following Manchester United’s dismal start to the current campaign.

The subsequent decision to bring in Ruben Amorim, a manager known for playing a polar opposite style, has not paid immediate dividends as expected with the Red Devils languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.

Players have cited the difference in style as a reason for the team’s disappointing results while the new head coach has also made it pretty clear that things will get much worse before they eventually improve.

A cursory glance at the squad shows what a tough job the Portuguese tactician has on his hands with most of the players recruited to fit a transitional style of play.

Recruited to fit transitional style

Before the January window, the 20-time English league champions were riddled with inconsistent wingers and defenders capable of playing in a low block, something Amorim has alluded to recently.

“We have players like Harry Maguire and Matta [Matthijs] de Ligt defending the box, they are really strong, but then when they have to cover a lot of space, the game changes for them.

“So I know that, but I have to not just think about now, of course we need to survive, but it is really hard for me to play like we play in the second half. But I feel the players are more comfortable sometimes defending in the low block,” Amorim had said recently.

The winter window saw the club get rid of Marcus Rashford and Antony while Patrick Dorgu was brought in to play the role of a wingback and there were signs of improvement before the Dane’s dubious red card against Ipswich Town.

The ex-Sporting CP boss wants his midfielders to be able to handle the intensity of his demands but he has been forced to play Bruno Fernandes as a deep-lying playmaker due to the lack of quality at his disposal.

And even up front, the lack of goals this season can be explained by the fact that Amorim has had to utilise a really young bunch who are still learning on the job, not what a club like United should rely on.

As per Givemesport, Amorim has made his disappointment known to the powers above regarding the haphazard nature of recruitment which has left him with a disbalanced squad.

Imbalance throughout the squad

“United have been continually linked with a move for Sporting’s Swedish goal-machine Viktor Gyokeres. But having forked out £200 million on attackers Rasmus Hojlund, Antony and Joshua Zirkzee, United didn’t have the £80 million it would have cost to buy Gyokeres in January.

“In the meantime he has to work with what he’s got and training ground sources say Amorim has been massively disappointed at the imbalance in the squad and the haphazard recruiting.

“It’s left him with midfielders like Casemiro and Cristian Eriksen who can no longer compete physically in the Premier League, while too much burden has been placed on young players like Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.”

The head coach has a mountain to climb and ideally, he needs a lot of help in the summer to reconfigure the squad to his liking. Given the PSR concerns, it remains to be seen how much help the co-owners can provide.

United plotting move for AC Milan superstar to replace Ten Hag’s disastrous signing – report

Manchester United are exploring the transfer market to find Andre Onana’s replacement, as per reports.

Onana is once again in the spotlight for his erratic style of shot-stopping that continues to deliver mixed results, much to the frustration of the United faithful.

Against Ipswich Town, the 28-year-old rushed from his line, leading to a mix-up between him and Patrick Dorgu. Ipswich forward Jaden Philogene capitalised on it and gave the visitors a lead with a simple finish on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag signed the ex-Ajax man from Inter Milan to replace David de Gea but so far the decision has proven to be underwhelming, to say the least.

The Cameroon international is far from a reliable option between the sticks and it has emerged that the club’s hierarchy are already looking to replace him.

Mike Maignan to replace Andre Onana at Manchester United?

According to Fichajes, Onana’s frequent mistakes have “raised doubts” within United.

It is understood the Premier League giants are evaluating their options and have identified AC Milan number one Mike Maignan as “one of the main candidates to fill the position that Onana would leave.”

United’s coaching staff reportedly consider addressing their goalkeeping department a priority and have set their sights on the France international.

Maignan has established himself as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers, impressing with his agility and box dominance.

United, meanwhile, continue to be one of the Premier League’s most vulnerable sides in set-piece situations with Onana as their number one.

The report adds that Maignan’s continuity in Milan is not guaranteed and United’s interest could convince him to leave the Rossoneri.

Having said that, Amorim’s budget for the summer transfer window is expected to be limited and the idea of another marquee goalkeeper signing appears unrealistic at this stage.
