José Mourinho speaks out on Ruben Amorim’s record at United, shares very blunt verdict on Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has extended his support to Ruben Amorim, while also giving his verdict on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s tenure at the club so far.

Amorim has endured a tumultuous start to life at United since replacing Erik ten Hag in November last year, losing eight of the 16 Premier League games he has taken charge of.

At the moment, United are languishing in 14th place in the table, with just 33 points gained from a possible 81.

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham last weekend, the Europa League represents United’s last chance to win a trophy and clinch European football ahead of next season.

Despite the team’s struggles under Amorim, Mourinho – who was in charge of the club from 2016 to 2018 – has offered his backing.

The Fenerbahce gaffer told Sky Sports about Amorim, “He’s a good kid. Always very respectful to me. We had a good relationship for a few years. He knows I wish him well.”

Mourinho confirmed that he and Amorim last spoke during Christmas.

Since he assumed operational control of United a year ago, Ratcliffe has implemented a number of cost-cutting measures including making hundreds of staff redundancies, cancelling cup final perks for employees, cutting back on ambassadorial salaries and hiking ticket prices.

Asked about this, Mourinho answered, “To be honest I don’t know much about what’s happening.”

“I know Sir Jim Ratcliffe. I’m not saying we are big friends but we have a good relationship. I know him well. He invited me to his house a couple of times. I see him as a good person and a great businessman.”

“Of course, I feel for some of the people that I know [losing their jobs], but hopefully it goes in the right direction.”

Mourinho is eyeing his fifth major European trophy and Fenerbahce’s route to May’s final could see them face United in the last four at the end of April and start of May.

Despite this, he insisted he does not see it as an opportunity to get revenge against his former side.

“In my mind, I never feel about revenge. I never have that feeling because when I leave a club, I prefer to remember my good times at the club.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action later today when they face Real Sociedad in San Sebastian. Kick-off is at 17:45 GMT.

Video: Ruben Amorim’s shocking claim about United’s fortunes will concern fans and INEOS

Ruben Amorim has not had the best of times since his arrival as Manchester United’s new head coach, losing 10 out of 24 games in all competitions.

From falling out with star players to multiple injury issues, the Portuguese has had to deal with a lot and it is clear to see that the scale of the job at hand has definitely caught him off-guard.

Doubts have been thrust regarding his change in formation with multiple pundits claiming that he should tweak his style to accommodate the players at his disposal, something the 40-year-old has steadfastly refused.

The Red Devils are languishing in 14th position in the Premier League while they have already crashed out of both domestic cup competitions.

“Start afresh”

The Europa League now represents the club’s last shot at silverware this season while winning the competition is the only way for United to qualify for the Champions League next term.

Before the all-important Round of 16 first leg tie against Real Sociedad, Amorim was asked about one day he would like to relive again by TNT Sports, and he pointed to his last day at former club Sporting CP and his first day at United.

— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) March 6, 2025

Interestingly, he then added that his considering his dismal start to life at Old Trafford, he would prefer to rip it all up and start afresh.

“The first day here in Manchester, so start all over again knowing the different things to try and change the course of things!”

Can United do their talking on the pitch?

His recent interviews have not exactly done wonders for the confidence with the tactician claiming the Europa League was not the be-all and end-all for the club this season, even though fans and players would disagree.

During the course of the interview, he also spoke fondly of the United fans and how they have kept supporting him despite what has occurred on the pitch.

“They say one thing to me that is really strange, that is, ‘You are doing a good job!’. That is so hard to understand sometimes, when I listen to them, it’s really important to me.

“The way [the fans] support us, even when we are losing in the bad moments, I think that is the most special thing.”

Hopefully, Amorim and his players can do the actual talking where it matters, out on the pitch against Real Sociedad. The season-defining fixture kicks off at 5.45pm GMT.

United set to sign 18yo Argentina wonderkid compared to World Cup winner, “formal negotiations” have started – report

Since INEOS’ arrival, Manchester United have not shied away from spending big to land the best young talents from all across the globe.

The financial reality around the club is such that the Red Devils cannot afford to go all gung-ho in the market as in previous seasons, where they have signed all the wrong profiles for extravagant sums of money.

Which is why the co-owners have shifted their focus to trying to unearth superstars rather than buying them and that can be seen from deals for Leny Yoro in the summer and Diego León and Ayden Heaven in January.

The Peoples Person recently relayed that the 20-time English league champions are keeping tabs on Fenerbahce wonderkid Yusuf Akçiçek and he is not the only defensive prospect on the club’s radar.

Gimenez deal

As revealed by journalist Dana Vidal, the Old Trafford side have been keeping tabs on Juan Giménez of Rosario Central and are close to signing him permanently.

Given the player is only 18, United want to avoid thrusting him straight into the limelight and are even planning to loan him back to Rosario until the end of the year.

— Mundo Central 12⭐ (@MundoCentralOf) March 6, 2025

The Argentina U20 international’s great wish is to play in the Rosario derby before embarking on the journey to Manchester.

“Juan Giménez is close to being a Manchester United player. The idea is that he stays until the end of the year and then goes to England. The defender’s wish is to play a First Division Rosarino Classic,” Rosario Central fan account wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

This information has been backed up by journalist Lucas Calatroni who has stated that formal negotiations between both clubs have already started.

Formal negotiations on

“Both Rosario and England indicate that there are formal negotiations between Manchester United and Rosario Central for Juan Giménez. Stay tuned for any news in the coming days,” he wrote on X.

— Lucas Calatroni (@lucas_calatroni) March 5, 2025

United have been aware of the Argentina wonderkid’s talents for sometime now and even scouted him back in 2024. He had created history by becoming the second defender in the history of Central to make his senior debut before turning 18.

INEOS have made it clear to the scouting department that they must scour the South American market, a hotbed of talent which the club have not really tapped into in recent years.

Despite being 18, Giménez already has 20 appearances for the Rosario senior team and has also impressed under Argentina great Javier Mascherano at the U20 national level. He has been compared to World Cup winner Cristian Romero, currently plying his trade for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

No specific financial details have been divulged as yet but it is great to see the scouting department doing its job thoroughly and the club not dilly-dallying when it comes to scooping up exceptional talents.

Eye-catching stat involving struggling United star offers club fresh hope ahead of Europa showdown with Sociedad

A promising Rasmus Hojlund stat has emerged, giving Manchester United hope ahead of their Europa League meeting with Real Sociedad on Thursday.

United’s goalscoring woes this season have been well-documented and unsurprisingly, most of the blame has fallen squarely on the shoulders of their two strikers – Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

However with Zirkzee now primarily being deployed in the number 10 role – and showing positive signs of promise in that position – the pressure on Hojlund has intensified.

The Dane’s long run without a goal extended to 18 games on Sunday as United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Marco Silva’s Fulham.

It has been almost three months since Hojlund found the back of the net, last getting on the score sheet when he grabbed a double against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on 12 December.

He started the FA Cup clash with Fulham but was taken off in the second half and replaced by 17-year-old Chido Obi, who gave the team significantly more attacking thrust.

And with United heading into the game vs. Sociedad without Obi – who is unavailable for selection – the burden of leading the line and coming up with the goods is once again on Hojlund.

Understandably, based on current form, there may be some doubts about his ability to score in San Sebastian but his numbers in European competitions tell a completely different story.

As Statman Dave notes, Hojlund has bagged 10 goals in his last 10 appearances in Europe. No striker aged 22 or younger has netted more in that timeframe.

It sounds unbelievable considering his struggles, especially in the Premier League but the fact remains he’s prolific in Europe.

Perhaps with a bit of luck, he will break his duck against Sociedad and embark on a run, helping United to finish the campaign strongly.

Sociedad vs. United kicks off at 17:45 GMT.

Man Utd: Mainoo’s actual wage demand revealed but ‘reluctant’ sale to Chelsea possible for one reason

Kobbie Mainoo has not asked Manchester United for £180k a week and wants to stay at Old Trafford, but the decision may be taken out of his hands.

Mainoo – who’s currently out of action with a muscle injury – is in talks with boyhood club over a new contract with his current deal earning him just £20,000 a week, a rate of pay he quite reasonably believes doesn’t reflect his contributions to the club.

A report earlier this week claimed United ‘have held fresh talks’ with Mainoo ‘in the hope of finally reaching an agreement in prolonged contract negotiations’, but the academy graduate’s wage demands are a sticking point.

It’s claimed  ‘Mainoo’s representatives want a pay rise to £180,000 a week plus bonuses which would bring him in line with his team-mates and reflect his status as an England regular’.

But transfer journalist Alex Crook claims the midfielder doesn’t expect such a significant increase and also rubbished suggestions he’s looking for a move away from the club after interest from Chelsea in January.

“There were some stories doing the rounds that Mainoo is not happy with the financial package on offer to try and persuade him to sign a new deal at Manchester United,” Crook said on talkSPORT.

“I’m told some of the figures being banded around in terms of his demands, maybe are a little excessive €180k a week was quoted. I think it’s nearer £150k a week, but again, this is a sign that Manchester United are trying to trim the wage bill. We know when Amad Diallo signed his new deal, it was only, and I say only in inverted commas, 100 grand a week, but that is obviously a lot less than United have historically paid.

“Mainoo is an academy product, someone who loves the football club. He wants to stay at Manchester United, but it’s just a case of coming to an agreement on the terms, and obviously there is also this PSR issue that United may have to tackle this summer.”

TEAMtalk claim ‘United could yet consider his sale this summer if a bumper offer comes their way and with the club reluctantly forced to get creative to try and find the funds to help Amorim with a major squad rebuild’, although his sale ‘would be classed as a hugely reluctant one’.

Crook backed up those claims and believes the temptation of pure profit for United is where the PSR system fails.

He added: “If Man Utd were to sell Mainoo we know Chelsea would be interested. United would make a hundred percent profit, and again for me, this is where the PSR system falls down.

“I don’t think clubs should be encouraged to cash in on the players who come through their academy. These are the players that as football fans, we want to see flourish in the first team.”

Football quiz: Missing Men – Moyes’ Man Utd XI v Real Sociedad in 2013

Before Manchester United face Real Sociedad, recall when David Moyes took his Red Devils to San Sebastian in 2013…

The Moyes era was in its infancy – did it ever reach the next phase? – when United went to Spain to face Real Sociedad in the Champions League.

Barely six months after Sir Alex Ferguson had retired, it was a small glimpse of the type of shambles to come.

United drew 0-0 but Robin van Persie – a second-half substitute – missed a penalty and the Red Devils had a man sent off.

“It’s not going well today”: United star with growing catalogue of errors finally opens up on his disastrous form

Andre Onana’s form has been nothing short of disastrous since Ruben Amorim took over as Manchester United’s new head coach back in November of last year.

From high-profile errors in both the Europa League and Premier League, the Cameroonian’s catalogue of mistakes since joining the club keeps on increasing by the day.

That has naturally led to rumours of the Portuguese tactician being unhappy with the United No 1 with the Red Devils potentially open to moving on the former Inter Milan ace in the summer while also hunting for an able replacement.

But the 28-year-old has clearly not been paying much attention to the outside noise with the United shot-stopper confident that his situation and that of the club will change soon.

Onana on the United challenge

In an interview with Media Carré (as relayed by L’Attaquant), the Cameroon international said he has always had to face challenges wherever he has gone and he’s relishing the current one at Old Trafford.

“Everywhere I’ve been I’ve had challenges, but this is a wonderful one… United have had difficult situations, and that’s the case at the moment. But I’m confident that situation will change.”

And that involves having the mental fortitude to deal with criticism while remaining positive and working hard in training to improve.

— CARRÉ (@lemediacarre) March 5, 2025

He also added that the ultimate objective for the entire squad is to help the Red Devils climb back up the ladder of English football.

“In times of difficulty, you always have to try to find the positive side. It’s not going well today, but it will be better tomorrow. Our main objective is to put Manchester back in its place, the biggest club in the country. Our opponents are well prepared, like City or Liverpool. The Premier League is an extremely tough championship.”

It was former boss Erik ten Hag who was responsible for bringing Onana to Old Trafford with the 20-time English league champions paying Inter Milan £47.2 million in the summer of 2023.

Most fans were delighted with the capture given previous incumbent David de Gea’s faltering standards and the ex-Ajax star’s imperious form in Italy.

Onana on not saying no to United

But those displays have clearly not translated in the colours of United but Onana remains confident that he can change the situation for the better.

In fact, the shot-stopper revealed that plenty of his well-wishers had warned him not to join the three-time European winners due to the on-pitch troubles and off-field turmoils.

But the 28-year-old took up the challenge without a moment’s hesitation given the history of the club.

“I already knew about the difficulties. Some players wrote to me asking me to prepare because it rains all the time and I was at risk of being depressed. But you can’t say no to Manchester United. They’re an institution. Once the offer came, I said: Let’s go!”

Amorim will be hoping Onana can come good given INEOS’ limited transfer budget in the summer. It is unlikely that the club can afford to sign a goalkeeper on top of a striker and midfielder.

Man Utd: Neville makes shock Arsenal prediction as fans told Glazers ‘can run club how they want’

Gary Neville has made a shock prediction for Manchester United’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday, while the Red Devils fans have been told the Glazers “have a right to run the club any way they want”.

The Glazers have been fiercely criticised by United fans over the years, with the sale of 27 per cent of their shares to Sir Jim Ratcliffe last year taking the focus off them somewhat.

But the cost-cutting strategies of the new head of football operations and his Ineos team has highlighted the degree to which the club has been mismanaged by the Glazers.

READ MORE: Ranking Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 17 Man Utd f***-ups: 3) Ruben Amorim, 4) Dan Ashworth, 8) Kath Phipps

Supporters group The 1958 are planning a protest ahead of the Arsenal game against the American family for leading to the club to the brink of ‘financial Armageddon’.

The group are urging fans to wear black to symbolise their club ‘slowly dying’ and join the protest which will begin at the Tollgate pub at 3pm and move down Talbot Road, Warwick Road and Sir Matt Busby Way before pausing at the Trinity statue and continuing down the Munich Tunnel.

The movement coms with the club in 14th in the Premier League and on course for their worst season in the Premier League era.

And yet, amid the fan fury, former goalkeeper Tim Howard has defended his compatriots, insisting the criticism of the Glazers has been “one-sided”.

“I think they’ve spent money for Man United in certain places, and ultimately the criticism of ownership from fans at any club, but at Manchester United it’s oftentimes one-sided,” the former USMNT goalkeeper said.

“The Glazers own the football club, and that in turn is a business. And what I’ve always said, because I am an owner, when you spend your billions to own a business, you have the right to run it in any way you want.

“Now, that will ultimately prove good or bad business for sure, but you have the right to run it the way you want, and along with that comes criticism but everybody understands that. I think they have spent, and you can take it a step further and look at other clubs.

“Everton are a mess, and not because they haven’t spent, but because they spent a lot of money. In fact, so much so that they got docked points because of PSR so I think the Glazers are spending money.

“When you look at the squad and the amount of money that was paid for the likes of [Jadon] Sancho and [Cristiano] Ronaldo, all these players, money was spent. Was it spent wisely? I’m not sure the Glazers make those decisions, so there’s other parts of that question that need to be answered.”

Meanwhile, Neville – a fierce critic of the Glazers in the past – has made a shock prediction for United’s clash against second-placed Arsenal on Sunday, after the Gunners just hammered PSV Eindhoven 2-0 in the Champions League.

“United are playing so poorly at the moment, but they do sometimes lift their game against big opponents,” said Neville on the It’s Called Soccer podcast.

“And I feel on Sunday, the crowd will be there with them. And I think it will be 1-1 – scorer for United will be Bruno Fernandes.”

United planning to scout Mourinho’s new favourite wonderkid who kept Victor Osimhen quiet for 90 minutes – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is desperate for a left-footed defensive profile given Lisandro Martinez is set to be absent for most of this year due to an ACL injury and subsequent surgery.

Ayden Heaven was brought in from Arsenal in January and he made his debut against Fulham in the FA Cup, impressing during his 30-minute cameo and the Portuguese tactician must trust him over the error-prone Victor Lindelof.

Amorim clearly wants more and as per Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, the Red Devils have sent scouts to watch Yusuf Akçiçek in action when Fenerbahçe take on Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday.

“EXCLUSIVE | Manchester United will come to Istanbul to watch Yusuf Akçiçek in the Fenerbahçe-Rangers match,” the journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Left-footed profile who fits the bill

The 19-year-old has impressed Jose Mourinho enough to earn 13 caps already this season including four starts in the Europa League.

He has helped keep six clean sheets in all competitions, including an impressive performance at the back against arch-rivals Galatasaray where he helped keep Victor Osimhen quiet for 90 minutes.

ÖZEL | Manchester United, Fenerbahçe-Rangers maçında Yusuf Akçiçek’i izlemek için İstanbul’a geldi.

— Yağız Sabuncuoğlu (@yagosabuncuoglu) March 6, 2025

The Turkiye U19 international also has two goals and one assist this season, which highlights how dangerous he can be at both ends of the pitch.

Akçiçek has even been used as a right-back and defensive midfielder which highlights his positional flexibility, even though his future lies at the heart of the defence.

His performances have naturally attracted the interest of European heavyweights with Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen among his suitors.

Mourinho clearly likes the young ace

The Spurs scouts were left disappointed when they attended Fener’s win over Antalyaspor last Sunday with their former boss opting to leave Akcicek on the bench.

Whether he takes the same step against another of his former clubs in United on Thursday remains to be seen.

The Istanbul-born wonderkid came up through the ranks at Galatasaray before joining Fenerbahce last summer. His current contract is valid until 2028.

Under INEOS, United have shown willingness to bet big on young talents and it will be interesting to see if a future move is on the cards.

Former United goalkeeper backs the Glazer family and slams fans’ “one-sided” criticism – report

The Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United has been under fire from fans of the club ever since the controversial deal was struck in 2003.

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United have fallen behind the leading lights in the Premier League and wasted millions in the transfer market in the process.

Furthermore, the decay of Old Trafford and continued mismanagement of finances behind the scenes have left United in a sorry state both on and off the pitch.

However, the much maligned family have been offered support by a former United player, as reported by The Mirror.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard told Bein Sports that criticism of the Glazers is “one sided” and the American owners have the right to run the business as they wish.

“I think they have spent money for Manchester United in certain places and, like, ultimately the criticism of the ownership from fans – of any club but if you look at Manchester United – it is often times one-sided.

“The Glazers own the football club and that in turn is a business. What I’ve always said, because I am an owner of a football club, is that when you spend your billions to own a business then you have the right to run it in any way you want,” he said.

Howard’s sentiments are likely to fall on deaf ears with the fans who will be quick to point out that the Glazers haven’t actually put any of their own money into the club.

Regular dividend payments have also been paid to the board members despite the debt against the club continuing to rise with the shoddy performances on the field doing little to lift the mood over the last decade.

Howard did admit the money spent in the transfer market might not have been invested so wisely but doubled down on his view that the Glazers are putting their hands in their pockets.

“So I think the Glazers are spending money. When you look at the squad and the amount of money that was paid for the likes of Sancho and Ronaldo and all these players, the money was spent.

“Was it spent wisely? Well, I’m not sure the Glazers make those decisions. So there are other parts of that question that need to be answered,” he added.

Howard is now a minority owner at USL Championship club Memphis 901 and will no doubt be desperate to build a better rapport with their supporters than United have with their owners in the coming years.

United supporters are planning further protests against the owners this weekend with Arsenal visiting Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Fans are planning to wear all black to the game to represent the belief the club is ‘slowly dying’ and showing no signs of recovery under the current ownership model.
