Cunha: Improve, improve, improve – that’s the word

Saturday 27 September 2025 15:55

Matheus Cunha found it difficult to hide his frustration after Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

Cunha was back in the starting XI for the match at the Gtech Community Stadium, where the Reds fell two down in the opening 20 minutes, following a brace by compatriot Igor Thiago.

Benjamin Sesko halved the deficit and Bruno Fernandes missed the opportunity to equalise from the spot, before Mathias Jensen sealed the win for the Bees in stoppage time.

There were calls in some quarters for Brentford captain Nathan Collins to be sent off, after he pulled back Bryan Mbeumo for the penalty, but Cunha felt that the Reds did not do enough over the course of the 90 minutes.

Cunha: We need to do more

Matheus Cunha says United need to have “big character” and focus on improvement after a tough defeat at Brentford…

“It’s very frustrating to come here and not win,” he said. “Every game in the Premier League is, of course, important, but we need to do more.

“We need to do more – that’s the key, I think.”

The result leaves United in the lower reaches of the table and still looking for back-to-back wins, after six games.

Next up is a home outing against Sunderland prior to the international break as another big week of work on the training pitches awaits.

“Of course, we need to go there [Carrington] and to do everything we can,” Cunha added.

“Improve, improve, improve – this is the word, I think. We need to use it, we need to be focused and to have big character right now.

“It’s like I say, how important it is to fight for the shirt and winning the games.”

Amorim rues lack of control

Saturday 27 September 2025 15:52

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said we “didn’t play our game” during Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Brentford.

The Bees established an early lead through two Igor Thiago strikes, and while Benjamin Sesko clawed one back with his first goal for the Reds, it wasn’t enough to kickstart a comeback.

Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty saved on the other side of the break – with more than a few complaints about the length of time he was required to wait, while Brentford made substitutions and VAR checked a potential Nathan Collins red card – and Mathias Jensen sealed the three points for the hosts with a powerful late strike.

Keep scrolling to read what Amorim said after the match in interviews with TNT Sports and MUTV…

Amorim: We didn’t play our game Video

Amorim: We didn’t play our game

Ruben Amorim feels United paid the price for never settling down the game against Brentford…

MOMENTS AGAINST US

“I think we played the game they wanted us to play, the opponents – really confused: first balls, second balls. If we play the game of the opponent, it’s harder for us. We never settled the game down. We suffered two goals where we knew they are really strong on that, with the long balls. Then we tried to get back in the game. We miss a penalty, and all these moments are a little bit against us. That could change the game, but in the end, we need to – and we should do – better.”

LACKING CONTROL

“We need to have those moments for us. In the last game we had that, especially in the beginning of the game. Today, my biggest concern is the way we didn’t settle down the game, to control the game, to play our game. We should do that more in the game.”

EVERY GAME IS CRUCIAL

“Everything is important in this club. So, it’s not just the games at home or whatever. We need to win every game, and we are not doing that.”

FOCUS IN TRAINING

“Everything [is the focus]. We are working on everything. We spend all week training one against one, [for] when they kick the ball [long], and we suffer in the same way, so we need to do that again and to be better in the next match.”

LOOKING AHEAD

“[Defeat] always [feels] the same. To lose with this kind of club, it hurts a lot, and we need to think about the next one.”

MESSAGE TO THE FANS

“The same thing. When we lose, we say sorry to them, but they don’t want to hear nothing. In this moment, they want to see, so our job is to fight again, to win the next one.”

0 tackles, 0 interceptions, 0 ground duels won: Experienced United star crumbled in humbling 3-1 loss vs Brentford

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire faltered as his side fell to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Brentford.

United humiliated by Brentford

United headed into the contest at the Gtech Community Stadium with confidence, having beaten Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea last weekend.

Ruben Amorim was looking for his first back-to-back wins as United but his efforts suffered a significant blow as the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes.

For the opener, Maguire’s failed offside gamble left Igor Thiago through on goal, and the forward made no mistake in firing past Altay Bayindir.

Thiago added a second later on, capitalising on another moment of pitiful defending from the visitors. Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for United just before the half-hour mark, offering United some hope of mounting a comeback.

The 20-time English champions were handed a chance to draw level when Bryan Mbeumo won a penalty kick, but Bruno Fernandes’ spot-kick was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. Mathias Jensen made it 3-1 for Brentford in added time to completely sink Amorim and his players.

A number of United players didn’t rise to the occasion, including Maguire, who was taken off after 66 minutes of action.

Maguire’s performance

Beyond his roles in the first two goals, Maguire failed to make even one tackle or interception. However, he contributed five clearances.

The England international contested just one ground duel, which he failed to win. He vied for six challenges in the air and came out on top four times.

Maguire lost the ball seven times.

He registered 39 touches and managed to find his teammates with 25 of the 31 passes he attempted (81% individual pass accuracy).

Maguire connected with just one of the five long balls he pinged.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

United are back in action next Saturday when they host newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford.

United made Brentford look like world champions, and Amorim must be held responsible – opinion

Another weekend, and yet another defeat for Manchester United, this time a 1-3 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Prior to the game, most of the pre-match discourse was surrounding Ruben Amorim’s chance to pick up back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time under his tenure.

A damning indictment of his coaching, but given the Bees’ form, it was a very real possibility. But as has been the case under the Portuguese, the team stuttered and eventually faltered yet again.

The home side scored twice within the first 20 minutes off long balls forward, with the defenders lacking basic sense while Altay Bayindir did not cover himself in glory for the second.

Stupid defending, refereeing controversy

And while Benjamin Sesko did pull one back, Brentford made matters sure in added time with the goalkeeper at fault yet again.

Ruben Amorim will complain about why a clear red card was not awarded, and obviously, the penalty miss by Bruno Fernandes did change the game, but the truth was that the hosts dominated and deserved to win.

Brentford were poor prior to the game, and were 19th in terms of possession stats, but they had more of the ball in the first half.

At the end, they had more shots on target, and hardly looked like were troubled by the visitors, who looked very casual and devoid of any energy and drive.

Amorim has now won only nine times in 32 Premier League games, and it is clear that his system is not working, irrespective of what xG stats he produces.

Time up for Amorim?

He keeps picking underperforming players like Bayindir, while Senne Lammens, Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro, three of the club’s brightest young stars remain on the bench.

Playing the skipper in midfield instead of further forward makes very little sense, but the ex-Sporting CP boss insists on repeating the same madness every week.

He spoke of starting strong, but once again, the players did not respond and by the end of the game, it seemed like they were giving up.

INEOS seem hellbent on avoiding another huge payday to a coach, and Amorim knows that and he will not change his flawed approach. The fans should prepare for more suffering!

Four things we learnt as United lose to Brentford, sink into the quagmire once again

Manchester United travelled to London to take on Brentford in the Premier League this Saturday lunchtime.

Altay Bayindir continued in goal while Luke Shaw, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire started at the back.

Patrick Dorgu was named the left wing back while Diogo Dalot returned from injury to replace Amad.

Manuel Ugarte came in for the suspended Casemiro and started alongside Bruno Fernandes.

New signings Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo started together for the first time as an attacking trio.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

United all at sea defensively

The Red Devils have been defensively suspect for a long time but the selection of Maguire and De Ligt was intended to help deal with Brentford’s sizeable long ball threat.

Sadly from a United fan’s perspective, it didn’t make a jot of difference.

Maguire was in no-man’s land, stranded from the rest of his defensive line as Igor Thiago raced through and finished smartly.

Ruben Amorim’s side were also fortunate to not concede more from long throws and corners as the Brentford attack seemed completely free to do damage at will.

The host’s second goal was another catastrophic series of missed chances to clear and just underlines the problems the team need to solve to be truly competitive in this league.

Sesko opening strike

In more positive news, Sesko scored his first goal for the club to halve United’s deficit.

He started the game nervously and misplaced simple passes with the pressure clearly getting to him.

That all changed though after 26 minutes when the Slovenian showed good striking instinct in the box to slam home United’s goal from close-range. As a result, he looked a lot more assured thereafter.

United supporters will be hoping he can now push on and be the number nine that the club so desperately needs him to be this season.

Bryan Mbeumo quiet on his return

The Cameroonian gave six seasons to the home side but finally moved on this summer to Old Trafford.

Mbeumo has been one of the club’s most impressive performers this season but he struggled to make much impact against his former side.

Clearly a little affected by the occasion, he failed to spark his usual raids down the right hand side and did not have any real chances on goal in a quiet afternoon.

His usual pinpoint crossing was also well off its usual standard with numerous balls floating out of play aimlessly.

The performance was in stark contrast to his fine effort versus Chelsea last weekend as he was well defended by his former teammates.

Owing to his quality, he still won the penalty that United won in the second half due to a clever run into space which resulted in him being dragged down in the box. Sadly, Fernandes spurned the giant chance to bring the scores level.

Pressure on Ruben Amorim grows

If last weekend’s victory over Chelsea did anything to alleviate the constant pressure around Amorim, this weekend did not help.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for even the most loyal fans to back up certain team selections.

Even more pressingly, despite having significant time on the training ground this season, United seem to continue making the same errors over and over again.

It is also very hard to identify any clear playing style as the team somewhat drifts from one game to the next without anybody really knowing what will happen.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.

Fernandes squandered the decisive penalty, but this United star single-handedly cost his team 3 points today

Manchester United fell to a 3-1 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Altay Bayindir 5 – Made an excellent double save in the first half to keep United in the game, but didn’t cover himself in glory for Igor Thiago’s second goal of the contest or Mathias Jensen’s late strike.

Matthijs de Ligt 4 – Uncertain for Brentford’s second goal but he produced a much better performance in the second half.

Harry Maguire 2 – Terrible for the opener. Tried to gamble with the offside trap but was caught out. Showed hesitation in closing down Thiago, who punished him by finding the back of the net.

Luke Shaw 5 – Just OK.

Diogo Dalot 4 – Hardly got into the game, stuck on the outskirts for most of it.

Manuel Ugarte 5.5 – Contributed with key tackles and interceptions in midfield but his recurring issues on the ball hampered United at times.

Bruno Fernandes 3 – Struggled to influence the game yet again from a deeper role and missed a decisive penalty that could have drawn United level.

Patrick Dorgu 6 – Showed great determination to create Sesko’s goal with a driven run and cross, even if the rest of his performance remained fairly understated.

Bryan Mbeumo 5 – One of his poorer performances for United. Brentford defenders neutralised him but he still managed to win a penalty for United.

Matheus Cunha 4 – Set up the cross for Mbeumo that led to United’s penalty, but overall it was a forgettable outing. Failed to make an impact

Benjamin Sesko 7 – Showed great determination to score his first United goal.

Substitutes

Kobbie Mainoo 5 – Didn’t really make a difference when he came on bar a few good touches and contributions on the ball.

Leny Yoro 6 – Seamlessly slotted into the backline. Bizarre that he started on the bench again.

Mason Mount 5 – Offered nothing of note and made no difference.

Joshua Zirkzee 5 – Same as Mount.

Turbulent times: United collapse in 3-1 loss to Brentford following massive defensive blunder

Manchester lost 3-1 to Brentford on Saturday afternoon in what was another disappointing display in the Premier League this season.

Man United’s 2-1 triumph over Chelsea last weekend was all but a blur as their defence committed some grave errors that pretty much handed the hosts the win.

First half

The home side almost caught United off guard three minutes in, with Michael Kayode taking a massive throw-in that found its way into the six-yard box. Fortunately, Altay Bayindir showed the awareness necessary to catch the ball before it bounced into the net.

In a sporadic counter, Harry Maguire found Cunha on the run, who passed the ball forward to Benjamin Sesko. The striker took a shot that Nathan Collins got in the way of to break down the attack. Still, it was a positive display from United.

In the eighth minute, against the run of play, Brentford scored as Igor Thiago somehow beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with the keeper. Bayindir stood no chance as the Brentford forward thumped the ball into the top corner. It was a poor lapse of concentration from Harry Maguire, who should have been marking Thiago more closely.

15 minutes in, Kayode stepped up to take another long throw reminiscent of a corner. Bayindir did well to stretch out and punch the ball out of play.

Brentford almost scored from a corner when Nathan Collins took a header from barely metres away from the goal line. Bayindir performed an excellent parry to deny him.

Yet another Brentford cross found the head of Collins, with Bayindir doing well to tip the ball over the crossbar. Those were two excellent saves from Bayindir in quick succession.

In the 20th minute, the hosts doubled their lead. Thiago got on the end of a long ball, laying the ball off to Kevin Schade on the left flank while sprinting into the box. Schade took a box from a tight angle, which Bayidir saved. Unfortunately for United, the rebound found Thiago, whose shot Bayindir got a glove on but not enough to stop the ball from rolling in.

Yet again, the back three were at fault, with Matthijs de Ligt hesitating rather than marking Thiago as the long ball came down as was necessary.

In the 22nd minute, Sesko took a shot from distance that was saved by the goalkeeper.

Then, 25 minutes in, the United striker’s hard work paid off. Patric Dorgu crossed the ball to Bryan Mbeumo, only for the keeper to punch the ball toward Sesko, who blasted the ball into the net with a powerful header. Suddenly, it was 2-1, thanks to Sesko’s debut goal for United.

With eight minutes until half-time, United earned a corner. Maguire headed the cross goalward, only for his effort to be blocked.

Four minutes of added time were announced, yet United’s performance remained muted in the final minutes of the first half. Neither team looked likely to find another goal as the break approached.

While United’s game picked up, the team still lacked the bite it needed to claw its way back into the contest. Hopefully, Ruben Amorim gave the team an effective team talk head of the second half.

Second half

Two minutes into the second half, another long throw from Kayode threatened United’s goalmouth, with Bayindir doing well to claim it.

De Ligt was shown a yellow card after the referee determined that he shoved Collins. He needed to show more restraint for the remainder of the game to avoid further punishment.

Bruno Fernandes was booked a moment later, with his boot raised during a challenge on Dango Outtara.

On the hour mark, Collins popped a header into the box, although Luke Shaw did well to block Sepp van den Berg.

In the 63rd minute, Schade found Outtara in the centre of the box with a slick pass. Bayindir did well to deny Outtara’s lethal shot, keeping United in the game.

While United dominated the ball in the minutes that followed, they showed no creativity up front, struggling to break through the stubborn Brentford defence. More innovation would be needed for United to find the goal they desperately needed.

Leny Yoro and Kobbie Mainoo were United’s first substitutes of the match, coming on for Maguire and Manuel Ugarte.

With 20 minutes to go, United were off on a lethal counter-attack. Cunha threaded a slick through ball to Mbeumo, who was held back by Collins. Had Collins not fouled him, Mbeumo could very well have scored.

Still, the referee would not allow the Brentford defender to get away with it, immediately pointing to the penalty spot. VAR reviewed the infringement, and after a quick assessment, supported the referee’s decision.

Fernandes stepped up to the spot, hammering the ball to the bottom right corner. Unfortunately, the goalkeeper read him perfectly, saving the United skipper’s shot.

With the score still 2-1, United would need to find a breakthrough from elsewhere.

Mason Mount came on for Shaw with just nine minutes to play. Clearly, Amorim was looking to bolster his team’s attacking potential.

De Ligt came close to scoring when he got on the end of a long throw-in by Diogo Dalot, only for his shot to veer wide.

In the 84th minute, Dorgu was booked for a foul on Keane Lewis-Potter. Joshua Zirkzee replaced him moments later, adding to United’s attacking depth.

With eight minutes of stoppage time awarded, it was Brentford who seemed the more likely to score. United seemed to show no appetite for more goals, pretty much resigning themselves to their unfortunate fate.

Then, in the 95th minute, Matthis Jensen took a shot from outside the box that belted past Bayindir and into the net. It was another sobering moment for United, which certainly rubbed salt in their wounds.

The full-time whistle blew on another disappointing fixture for United. One wonders how much time Amorim has left at the helm if he doesn’t change the team’s fortunes soon.

Starting XI: Bayindir, Dalot, De Ligt, Maguire, Fernandes, Cunha, Dorgu, Mbeumo, Shaw, Ugarte, Sesko

Manchester United are still searching for a first away win of the Premier League season after another difficult day at the Gtech Community Stadium.

A ground that holds painful memories provided more agony after Bruno Fernandes saw his second-half penalty saved, as the Reds came close to salvaging something from the trip to west London.

United had slipped two goals behind inside the first 20 minutes, Igor Thiago scoring them both.

Benjamin Sesko’s first for the club halved the deficit and looked like sparking a recovery, but Fernandes missed from the spot after Nathan Collins pulled back the returning Bryan Mbeumo, and Matthias Jensen produced the match-settling third in added time.

Benjamin Sesko opened his United account before half-time.

FIRST HALF – SESKO DELIVERS A LIFELINE

Brentford have scored first in five of their six matches so far this season, so it wasn’t the greatest surprise when they broke the deadlock.

However, the manner of the eighth-minute goal left many in west London scratching their heads. Jordan Henderson thundered a ball forward and, at first glance, Igor Thiago appeared some way offside.

With no flag he put his foot down, rampaging forwards towards goal before applying a ferocious finish. A VAR check was always going to be forthcoming, but Harry Maguire’s hanging leg played the Brazilian on.

Matheus Cunha set about repairing the early damage as he flashed his shot just wide, but before too long United’s task became a lot greater.

The warning siren couldn’t have been louder: Altay Bayindir was called into action twice inside a minute to impressively deny Brentford as we struggled to deal with the aerial bombardment.

Bayindir was powerless to prevent Thiago stabbing in from close range after parrying Kevin Schade’s shot into his path.

Like the Bees’ opener, it provoked a response from United – but this time it came with a reward.

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu launched a high cross from the left, Caoimhin Kelleher wasn’t convincing under pressure and Mbeumo was a nuisance.

After his initial header was bundled away, and Kelleher saved another effort, Sesko slammed home the follow-up for the first of what his new fans hope will be many goals, picking an opportune moment to open his account.

Brentford have dropped eight points from winning positions already this season, and the teams went in to the interval knowing further twists were likely.

Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

SECOND HALF – PENALTY AGONY FOR BRUNO

Cunha, collecting a quick pass from Mbeumo, was the first to try and find an equaliser, but his low drive didn’t unsettle Kelleher.

Our captain became the first player to enter referee Craig Pawson’s book for a high challenge after catching Dango Ouattara, but the yellow didn’t disrupt United’s flow.

Mbeumo’s deep cross nearly found Dorgu at the back post, before the captain’s low cross had the Bees in a panic, but Brentford always looked capable of adding a third.

Sepp van den Berg couldn’t quite connect from five yards, and Ouattara couldn’t profit after being left all alone, with Bayindir saving low and keeping his team in with a shout.

Bayindir made several smart stops, but was beaten on three occasions.

Amorim made his move after 65 minutes, as Kobbie Mainoo came on for Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro replaced Harry Maguire.

Within five minutes the visitors had the spark they craved. Mbeumo was tugged back in the box by Nathan Collins. Mr Pawson pointed to the spot but kept his red card in his pocket, although the VAR did review the incident.

The four-minute delay only helped the home team as Fernandes waited to take his penalty. Irishman Kelleher guessed right, and after his spot of bother five miles down the road at Fulham last month, it was agony again for the skipper.

But that wasn’t the end of the pain. Joshua Zirkzee – introduced late on – headed over, while Matthijs de Ligt hooked wide.

With our players surging forward in search of a stoppage-time leveller, Brentford substitute Jensen thrashed his shot into the net to seal our third defeat of the Premier League season.

Thanks to our travelling fans for their support.

Four changes – Strongest possible Man Utd XI for Premier League game against Brentford

0
Ruben Amorim Sporting CP ( (Photo by Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images)

Manchester United are set to take on Brentford in the Premier League as they look to build on their winning performance against Chelsea.

It was by no means a vintage display, but it was a very important three points against the Blues.

Now, a trip to the Gtech Community Stadium comes with its own set of challenges.

Although the Bees are not as potent a threat as they were under Thomas Frank, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Amorim will not have the option of calling up Casemiro for the game, as the Brazilian was sent off against Chelsea. Lisandro Martínez is still nursing an injury, and Mazraoui has joined the list. Meanwhile, Amad has been given some time off for a family bereavement.

With all this in mind, here is how Amorim can line up against Brentford. In goal, he has placed his trust in Bayindir so far, although Lammens could be in line for his Man Utd debut.

Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw are likely to be the centre-backs on the night, with Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu flanking them as the wing-backs.

Bruno is nailed on for one of the midfield roles, with Manuel Ugarte coming in for the suspended Casemiro to round off the dual No. 8s.

This is where the questions arise in attack. Bryan Mbeumo is nailed on to start on the right wing, with Matheus Cunha likely to start on the left.

Through the middle, Šeško should keep his place despite failing to return so far. The only other option would be Mason Mount, who could play on the left and free Cunha to play through the middle.

Man Utd have a strong team and more than enough firepower to get past Brentford, and let us hope it is three more points on the board for Amorim.

Under-18s: United 2 City 4

Saturday 27 September 2025 13:34

Manchester United’s Under-18s fell to a first defeat of the 2025/26 season, following a second-half fightback by Manchester City at Carrington.

Gabriel’s well-taken strike and an immaculate Jim Thwaites free-kick had Darren Fletcher’s side in a comfortable position at the break.

But City halved the deficit at the beginning of the second period through Tyrone Samba, before quickfire efforts from Floyd Samba and Harrison Miles put the visitors into the lead.

The Reds’ misery was compounded late on, when goalkeeper Fred Heath was sent off for a challenge on Teddie Lamb outside the box, with Floyd Samba converting the resulting set-piece past Heath’s replacement Zac Watson.

Thwaites’s free-kick was a cracker.

FIRST HALF

United began the game with a 100 per cent winning record this term and started the stronger of the sides, as Samuel Lusale fired over following good work by captain Amir Ibragimov.

The home side soon had the lead, Gabriel producing a lovely curling finish after United had pressed the City backline and stolen possession.

Godwill Kukoni had to be substituted for Jayden Ngwashi on the half-hour mark, after picking up an injury, but that didn’t stop the Reds momentum.

Thwaites stepped up from 25 yards after a foul on James Bailey and his precise strike beat keeper Max Hudson and found the top corner.

As the interval approached, City looked to find a way back into the game, as Christian Dunbar-McDonald saw his claims for a penalty waved away and Tyrone Samba shot over, but United ended the half with a two-goal advantage.

SECOND HALF

The elder Samba brother reduced the arrears when his cross dropped into the bottom corner.

It was the first goal our young Reds have conceded all term and that seemingly galvanised Oliver Reiss’s side.

Floyd Samba fired home on 66 minutes and, soon after, Miles twisted on the edge of the box and converted his strike to give the Blues the lead for the first time.

It had been a tough, physical half for United and it was soon to get worse when Heath was given his marching orders.

Watson was introduced from the bench but could do little to stop Floyd Samba’s powerful effort, as City move to the top of the table on goal difference.

It’s a first defeat of the season for the young Reds.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Our Under-18s travel to Middlesbrough next Saturday (4 October) for a U18 Premier League Cup clash (kick-off 12:00 BST).

MATCH DETAILS

United: Heath, Helafu, Mills, Kukonki (Ngwashi 29), McCormack, Thwaites, Ibragimov (c), Nkoto (Watson 83), Bailey (Shah 76), Lusale, Gabriel (Brown 76).

Sub not used: McEvoy.

Goals: Gabriel 15, Thwaites 32 | T Samba 48, F Samba 67, 84, Miles 69.
