How to watch and follow Liverpool v United Women

Wednesday 12 March 2025 15:21

United Women return to WSL action on Friday evening, when Marc Skinner’s side travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.

The Reds are in fantastic form, with victory achieved in each of our last six games across all competitions, and by an aggregate score of 18-2. The most recent success – a 3-1 win over Sunderland – earned us a place in the last four of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup for the third successive season.

We’re second in the WSL table, and really well placed in regard to securing Champions League football next term – three points ahead of Arsenal and four clear of Manchester City.

Title hopes still linger too. We could close the eight-point gap to Chelsea (who have played a game more) to five this weekend, because the Blues are otherwise engaged: they’ll be at Pride Park come Saturday, taking on Manchester City in the Women’s League Cup final.

But to reduce our deficit to the reigning Women’s Super League champions, we must ensure all three points are bagged at 19:15 GMT on Friday. Here’s all the key info ahead of the Liverpool match, including ticket information and the latest team news…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

Tickets are available to all supporters until 3pm on Thursday 13 March. We received an initial allocation of 1,500, including 20 wheelchair pairs. Tickets are priced £10 for adults, £5 for over-65s and £4 for under-17s. Click here to purchase.

If you aren’t able to get to the ground in person, you can watch the game live in the United Kingdom via BBC Three, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.

We’ll also keep you up to date on the United App and ManUtd.com, with minute-by-minute updates. Prime cuts of the action, plus extended highlights, will be made available across our platforms later in the weekend.

WHAT’S THE LATEST TEAM NEWS?

Reigning Player of the Month Elisabeth Terland missed last weekend’s FA Cup game, but Skinner said a judgment would be made in the build-up to this game on whether a return against Liverpool would be possible.

Jayde Riviere has been back in training, but was not named in the squad that took on the Black Cats on Saturday, but Anna Sandberg appeared as a second-half substitute and Lisa Naalsund was also fit enough to reclaim a place on the bench.

Simi Awujo is another player that missed the Sunderland game. We’ll find out more about the squad’s likely composition when head coach Skinner conducts his pre-match press conference tomorrow (Thursday).

HOW ARE LIVERPOOL GETTING ON?

It’s been a mixed season so far for Liverpool, with five wins, three draws and seven defeats leaving the Anfield club 15 points adrift of the top three, and behind Brighton & Hove Albion (fifth) before this weekend’s fixtures.

But the Merseysiders geared up for Friday’s game with a morale-boosting away win at Arsenal in the FA Cup, which earned them an exciting semi-final against league leaders Chelsea.

This will be the first time Liverpool’s female team have played under the floodlights at Anfield, and over 9,000 tickets have been sold, so it’s sure to be a thrilling 90 minutes amid a lively atmosphere.

DID YOU KNOW?

Should United win on Friday, we’ll equal our best sequence of results in the Women’s Super League. Success on Merseyside would make it eight consecutive league wins – a run which started, neatly, with a 4-0 romp over Liverpool at Leigh Sports Village back in early December.

Our best previous effort? That was recorded across the tail-end of the 2022/23 season and the start of 2023/24 – we won the final seven matches of the former campaign, and then added an eighth consecutive victory by beating Aston Villa 2-1 on the opening day of the following season.

Amorim discusses his relationship with Sir Jim

Wednesday 12 March 2025 14:30

United head coach Ruben Amorim has described his relationship with club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe as “really good” – due to the pair’s “blunt” and “honest” exchanges.

Ratcliffe gave a series of media interviews earlier this week, and reporters picked up on his hugely supportive comments about our Portuguese leader.

In the press conference to preview Thursday night’s critical UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Real Sociedad, Amorim gave his own thoughts about the pair’s relationship.

You can read the quotes – and everything else Amorim had to say at Carrington – by scrolling down the page…

PRESS CONFERENCE | Ruben Amorim and Patrick Dorgu face questions from the media, before Real Sociedad’s visit…

MOUNT CLOSING ON FIRST-TEAM RETURN

“Mason Mount is too soon. Leny is out. Harry Maguire cannot play this one but I hope to have him for Sunday. Manu is in the squad and I think there is no-one [else] returning. Is Leny a long-term thing? No, no. It’s not a long-term but he cannot play this game and the other game [Leicester].”

THE NEW STADIUM

“It’s an amazing stadium, like it should be. But it’s in the future, five years from now. We have to focus on the present and I’m really excited to win things in Old Trafford, that’s our focus.”

WE ALL KNOW WE’RE UNDERPERFORMING

“I think if we’re being honest, in this moment everybody – we, all the players, me – we are underperforming this season. So we can always change that. I include myself in that part of underperforming. You are talking about players like Casemiro, for example, that won everything. We know that these kind of players can play so much better, so that is the focus. He [Sir Jim Ratcliffe] was honest on that, so the focus is to change his mind and all the people’s minds.

“If you are a top player and you play in this club… even me – a lot of people say I am not good enough for the club and my feeling is that you can change that with results. In training, I feel they want this really bad and especially for tomorrow.”

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH RATCLIFFE

“It’s really good since day one. I think we are really blunt and honest with each other. It’s a little bit the character. We are quite similar in that way, so I always felt the support of the board and especially from Sir Jim. I cannot tell you the conversations, but they are simple conversations, clear conversations and honest conversations.”

I’VE FELT SUPPORT FROM DAY ONE

“I already knew that [senior figures at the club were behind me]. All these conversations I’ve already had in the past with them. After matches, they went to the dressing room and talked to me to explain this. To say it publicly is really good for the coach but I say the same thing. We need results and we need to improve the team. But since day one I felt the support from everybody here.”

OUR TRANSFER PLANS

“We have a clear plan to address next season. Of course, we have Europa League also and you can reach Champions League. We never know. It’s far from this moment, but it can change, we never know, the preparation for next season. We have a plan, we know what to do. We know we are in a difficult moment but the most important thing again is to have a plan and to know what to do and to know what players you need to bring. Does that potentially involve selling players? We’ll see. In this moment we are just focused, especially on this competition. That can change everything so let’s see about the game tomorrow.”

EUROPA PROGRESS CAN INFLUENCE LEAGUE FORM

“In that context, [reaching the last eight] it’s also important to give us more energy to continue the season. We know that. It’s not going to change a lot the idea for the next season but it will give us more energy to finish the season in a different way. So tomorrow again it’s going to be a really important game for us. I didn’t hear nothing [from the players, about Sir Jim’s naming individuals during interviews]. I really enjoyed the training today, so we are ready to face the game.”

Man Utd: Journalist stunned by ‘astonishing’ Ratcliffe claim as Amorim reveals dressing room reaction

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim insists “underperforming” players can “change” Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s mind after his comments about some of them being “overpaid”.

Ratcliffe conducted a series of interviews on Monday to address a number of issues at the club, including the current terrible results and performances on the pitch, as well as the terrible recruitment over the last few years.

Man Utd are currently 14th in the Premier League table after swapping Erik ten Hag for Amorim in November and Ratcliffe called out some players for being “overpaid”.

Ratcliffe said in an interview on Monday: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying [Andre] Onana, we’re buying [Rasmus] Hojlund, we’re buying [Jadon] Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.”

When asked about Ratcliffe’s comments on Wednesday, Amorim said: “Everyone is underperforming. Myself and the players. We can always change that, I include myself in that part of underperforming.

“You are talking about players like Casemiro that have won everything. We know these players can play so much better, that is the focus. He was honest on that. The focus is to change his mind.

“A lot of people will say you are not good enough for the club, but my feeling is you can change that with results. In training I feel they want this really bad.”

On his relationship with Ratcliffe , Amorim added: “It has been really good since day one. We are honest with each other. We have simple, clear and honest conversations.

“To give me support publicly is really good for a coach. Since day one I have felt the support of everybody.”

And journalist Jason Burt found Ratcliffe’s comments “quite astonishing” for a club owner as he questioned whether Man Utd can “do the deals” for their “overpaid” stars.

Burt told Sky Sports’ Back Pages podcast: “Clubs and agents and players aren’t stupid. They’ll know that they’re not wanted at Manchester United. The big issue is just taking their contracts. Who’s going to pay those contracts?

“Jim Ratcliffe can say whatever he wants in terms of getting them out or, you know, them being overpaid and so-and-so.

“But he’s got to do the deals to make them move on. That’s the bottom line. Other clubs out there know the situation, they’ll come in low ball.

“Manchester United has got to take the medicine. Basically, they’re not going to sell high on these players. You know, it’s just the situation they’re in at the moment.

“They’re going to make huge losses, and they’re just going to have to grin and bear it and get on with it.

“If they’re going to actually turn the squad around, some of those players have to be paid off, or they have to get deals that are more favorable to them to get them out of the club. That’s just the way it is.

“And I do think it’s quite astonishing for a club owner to speak quite so frankly. I welcome it to a degree. I think sometimes you’re going to have to call it as it is.”

Ruben’s view on stadium plans

Wednesday 12 March 2025 13:54

Ruben Amorim has provided his thoughts on Manchester United’s plans for a new stadium as the centrepiece of the Old Trafford regeneration project.

Our head coach was addressing media ahead of Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League encounter with Real Sociedad.

It’s the first time we’ve heard from him since plans were unveiled for a 100,000-capacity ground just to the west of the current Old Trafford stadium.

“It’s an amazing stadium, like it should be,” Amorim said of the plans.

“But it’s in the future, five years from now. We have to focus on the present and I’m really excited to win things in Old Trafford [first], that’s our focus.”

In terms of this season, United’s final chance of silverware is in this competition: the Europa League. Amorim’s Reds played well at Real Sociedad in the first leg, with Joshua Zirkzee’s excellent strike opening the scoring, but were disappointed to eventually draw 1-1 as the hosts converted a late penalty.

As Ruben pointed out, should we progress at Old Trafford on Thursday, the whole nature of this season and next could be altered, with the prospect of a trophy and further reward.

“We have a clear plan to address next season,” Amorim said, when asked whether United can compete financially with other English clubs going forward.

“We have a plan, we know what to do, we know what kind of players we need to bring.”

The 20 ways Sir Jim Ratcliffe could have made the Neville interview EVEN WORSE

After months of complaints that Ruben Amorim was having to answer questions about the deeper and darker goings-on at Manchester United that were nothing to do with him and should instead be answered by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, some of those questions were at last posed to the cartoon supervillain in extremely gentle softball fashion by Gary Neville, instantly and immediately prompting us to ask that Sir Jim never be allowed to speak again.

The interview did not go well.

At one point his head fell clean off when Gary Neville suggested the idea of a Sportsman’s Dinner – something that neither Sir Scrooge McRatcliffe or apparently anybody at all at Manchester United has ever heard of – as a way to raise the tiny handfuls of cash he has been running around trying to save in increasingly absurd penny-pinching miser fashion.

Indeed, so bad was the interview that Manchester United had no choice but to try and deflect attention from it by immediately announcing they were going to replace Old Trafford with a 100,000-seat Meccano circus tent and that what’s more it will be built in double-quick record-breaking time, because canals.

It’s hard to imagine how Ratcliffe’s attempt at a cosy criticism-silencing chat with the Neviller could have gone worse, but we’ve not let that stop us trying.

Here are just some of the even worse things Sir Jim Ratcliffe could have done:

* Proudly declared he is incapable of sweating, while visibly sweating.

* Responded to questions about Old Trafford’s leaky roof by embarking on a lengthy anecdote about visiting a Pizza Express in Woking.

* Insisted that Ruben Amorim “is not a communist; he may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, a communist, but he is not a porn star”.

* Told Neville that United fans “don’t know they’re born” and “should be more grateful”.

* Pinned the blame for Manchester United’s travails on the Woke Mind Virus.

* Announced that he had reappointed Erik Ten Hag.

* Announced that he had reappointed Louis van Gaal.

* Announced that he had reappointed Jose Mourinho.

* Announces that he had reappoin…well you get the idea with that.

* Repeated Ed Woodward’s transparently absurd claim that Manchester United have one billion fans and followers; oh wait, no he did do this one.

* Do a furious rant

* Worn a Make Man United Great Again hat.

* Looked disarmingly straight down the camera to tell Man Utd’s few remaining staff that “some of you may die, but it’s a sacrifice I am willing to make”.

* Answered every question with the words This Is Manchester United Football Club We’re Talking About, waiting for Neville to nod in agreement that this had once again acceptably explained everything. Thinking about it, this would actually have been better than what he did do, so scratch that.

* Earnestly told Gary that these days, if you say you’re English, you’ll be arrested and thrown in jail. He’s get less grief if he were called Jim Ratcliffidico.

* Referred to Liverpool as LiVARpool with a knowing wink.

* Responded to a particularly probing question about the former players’ charity by standing to his full height, removing his shirt and giving forth a full-throated, red-faced, wild-eyed rendition of “if the Nevilles can play for England, so can I”…

* Denied the existence of Spain.

* Ended each of his answers with the words “in accordance with the prophecy…”

* Sworn allegiance to the Lizard Queen.

“Really good for the coach”: Ruben Amorim buzzing over news from club owner

Ruben Amorim says Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro will return to the squad soon.

“Mason Mount is too soon,” he said. “Leny is out. Harry cannot play this one but I hope to have him for Sunday. Manu [Manuel Ugarte] is in the squad. Leny is not long-term but he cannot play this game or the next one.”

The club had already confirmed earlier today that Mason Mount is back in training, but tomorrow’s match comes too soon for him to take part.

The same is not true though for Ugarte, who is expected to go straight back into the starting XI.

Asked about his thoughts on Sir Jim Ratcliffe saying some of the players are not good enough, Amorim said:

“I think if we are being honest, everybody, me, the players, are underperfoming this season. I include myself in that.

“You talk about Casemiro, for example, and he is a player that has won everything. Everyone can do so much better. The focus is on to change his and everyone else’s minds.

“If you are a top player and you play in this club, even me… people say I am not good enough for this club. In training I feel as though they want this really bad, especially tomorrow.”

The boss was asked to comment on his relationship with Sir Jim.

“It is really good since day one,” he responded. “We are blunt and honest with each other. I feel the support from the board, especially from Sir Jim. We have honest conversations.”

Asked about his response to Sir Jim saying he unequivocally backed him, Amorim replied:

“I already knew that. I had had all of these conversations with them. They came to me in the dressing room. But to say it publicly is really good for the coach. Since day one, I have felt the support from everyone here.”

On his plans for next season, Amorim said:

“We have a clear plan to address next season. Of course, we have the Europa League also, and we can reach the Champions League. You never know. It can change plans. We have a plan and we know what to do. We know what kind of players we need to bring.

“In that context, it is also important; [winning tomorrow] will give us more energy to continue the season. It is not going to change a lot, but it can give us energy.”

Tomorrow’s match at Old Trafford kicks off at 8pm.

Ruben Amorim has provided the latest on his Manchester United squad ahead of Thursday’s Europa League round-of-16 second leg with Real Sociedad.

The Reds go into the Old Trafford tie looking to get the job done and reach the quarter-finals, following the 1-1 draw at the Reale Arena last week.

There was welcome news in training with midfielders Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte taking part, but Leny Yoro was missing, after he failed to reappear for the second half of the 1-1 draw against Arsenal, and Amorim disclosed concern over a foot injury in the post-match press conference on Sunday.

“Mason Mount is too soon,” confirmed Ruben at Carrington. “Leny [Yoro] is out. Harry Maguire cannot play this one. I hope to have him for Sunday [against his former club Leicester City in the Premier League].

“Manu [Ugarte] is in the squad and I think there is no-one returning.

“No, no [Yoro’s absence] is not long term. Leny cannot play this game and the other game [Leicester].”

The existing list of absentees includes Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad.

Young striker Chido Obi is ineligible for this competition, but Harry Amass and Jack Fletcher, who trained with the group on Wednesday, are registered.

REAL SOCIEDAD’S TEAM NEWS

Coach Imanol Alguacil made eight changes for their weekend game in La Liga, resting several key players, but La Real lost 1-0 at home to Sevilla in the process.

Their big news is that influential midfielder Martin Zubimendi should be able to play. He came on as a substitute in that weekend game, after missing the first leg against United with illness, but there are doubts over the participation of Luka Sucic (knee) and Jon Aramburu (foot).

Alvaro Odriozola and Arsen Zakharyan both trained ahead of the squad’s flight to Manchester.

Man Utd: Ratcliffe interview ‘shocked’ one ‘offended’ star as INEOS ‘realise only’ option to ‘get him out’

A new report claims one Manchester United star has “taken offence” after discovering co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s verdict on his move to Old Trafford.

Earlier this week, Ratcliffe faced the media and was heavily scrutinised for his decisions since completing his minority takeover of Man Utd at the start of 2024.

One of his most newsworthy revelations came as he named five “not good enough” or “overpaid” Man Utd stars he presumably wants to offload in the summer.

“If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Højlund, we’re buying Sancho,” Ratcliffe said.

READ: Man Utd shamed five ranked on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s chances of ‘moving’ them on this summer…

“These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea [on loan] and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer. It takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.”

He added: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.

“We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future. There are some great players in the squad as we know, the captain is a fabulous footballer. We definitely need Bruno [Fernandes] – he’s a fantastic footballer.”

The previous regime at Man Utd made the foolish decision to pay around £60m plus add-ons to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid on a four-year contract during the 2022 summer transfer window.

The Brazil international enjoyed a strong debut season at Old Trafford, but his performances have severely declined over the past 18+ months as he’s slipped in the pecking order under Ruben Amorim.

The 33-year-old is under contract until 2026 and his reported £350,000 a week salary could make it difficult for Man to sell him this summer.

Journalist Graeme Bailey claims Man Utd “only” have one option with Casemiro, who was “left shocked” by Ratcliffe’s interview.

“United still working hard with the Pro League to try and get him out, they are in constant contact with them – they realise they are only place that can get him out and take his wages – if not they are looking at possible loans, which they are keen to avoid,” Bailey told United in Focus.

“We can also confirm that Casemiro is one of the players that have been left shocked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments and has taken offence.

‘This could complicate things. United would like the Brazilian to take a wage cut ahead of a possible move away but that looks unlikely now.”

Picture: United star returns to training ahead of Sociedad clash but two key players missing

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has returned to training, ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League meeting with Real Sociedad.

Ugarte missed last week’s first-leg draw with Sociedad at San Sebastian and was also unavailable for Sunday’s clash against Arsenal.

Asked if Ugarte would be back for the return fixture vs. Sociedad, Ruben Amorim told reporters [as quoted by the club’s website], “Maybe Ugarte, I don’t know, we’ll see.”

Amorim later added, “I think Manu will return.”

Now, it has been confirmed that the Uruguayan is back in training and likely to be in contention for the contest with La Real.

Ugarte was pictured in a training session at Carrington this morning.

— Simon Peach (@SimonPeach) March 12, 2025

Meanwhile, there was no sight of defensive duo Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro.

Like Ugarte, Maguire missed the first Sociedad game and was also not in the matchday squad for the Arsenal fixture. Amorim said that United have to be “careful” with the England international.

Yoro was named in the starting XI that faced Arsenal but could only manage to play the opening 45 minutes before he was withdrawn at the interval.

He was replaced by January signing Ayden Heaven, who filled in adequately and produced a sensational performance to help the Red Devils clinch a valuable point.

Yoro’s absence from training could suggest he is not fit enough to play a part against Sociedad, so there’s a good chance Heaven be afforded his first start for the club.

Earlier today, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Mount is returning to training and true enough, he was pictured in Wednesday’s session.

It’s understood that the meeting with Imanol Alguacil’s men may be too soon for Mount, despite Amorim being desperate to use him.

United vs. Sociedad kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
