Ratcliffe names two surprise culprits to blame for United’s drastic downfall, he “wouldn’t have tolerated” them

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed he would walk away from the club if he faced the same level of abuse as the Glazers.

Ratcliffe invested more than £1.2bn last season to buy 28.94% of United and as part of the deal, he assumed operational control of the club. The Glazers – who own 67.9% of shares – remain extremely hated figures in the eyes of supporters.

As recently as last weekend, thousands of United fans staged a protest calling for the American family to end their association with the Red Devils.

Ratcliffe sat down with The Times and opened up on his relationship with the Glazers. The INEOS billionaire also shed light on the criticism he has been subjected to over the past few weeks amidst a number of unpopular decisions including staff redundancies and hiked ticket prices.

Asked if he can stick it out of the friction between himself and some sections of the fanbase continue, Ratcliffe answered, “It can be unpleasant.”

“And I’ve probably failed on the having fun front. I mean, I can put up with it for a while. I don’t mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we’re having to make at the moment.”

“If I draw a bit of the ire, I can put up with that. But I’m no different to the average person. It’s not nice, particularly for friends and family.”

“So, eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I’d have to say, look, enough’s enough guys, let somebody else do this. They can’t really come to a match, the Glazers. They’ve retreated into the shadows a bit now, so I’m getting all the bloody stick.”

“We bought in and I haven’t seen them since. It’s, ‘Thank you, Jim, you’re doing a really good job.’ At the moment, I don’t have security, I don’t have to walk around like that. But it would defeat the object, wouldn’t it? You couldn’t tolerate it at that level, it just wouldn’t be fun.”

“I haven’t had it so far, not really. I had that guy through the car window at the Fulham match that got arsey with me, but I haven’t had what I would call threatening behaviour — although my brother Bob sends me f***ing critical notes. It’s a bit like me and Ruben, he gives me advice.”

Ratcliffe insisted that the desire to make money was not what motivated him to buy into United.

“That is 100 per cent not where I’ve come from at all. I’m making enough money in chemicals and oil and gas and all that stuff. I can’t honestly answer why we did it. It’s quite a difficult question. With Nice, in the French league, you can buy a club for £100million. It’s much cheaper access. But I don’t particularly enjoy going to watch Nice because there are some good players but the level of football is not high enough for me to get excited.”

Ratcliffe acknowledged that, just as the United shirt has weighed heavily on managers and players, he too feels the burden as he works to restore the club to its rightful place.

“The first thing Alex Ferguson said to me was that the shirt can be too heavy. It applies to everyone here really, the coach, the players — the owner. It’s turning me into an old man. It’s hard to do the interviews. On camera for 40 minutes, one cock-up and you’re legendary for it.”

“Remember [jewellery chain chief executive] Gerald Ratner, the guy with the rings? Spent his life building a business; one word, all gone. It takes a lot out of you. Because it’s around the world in a heartbeat. It goes viral. Everything is scrutinised. It takes one small piece…”

The British businessman explained that he has been urged by those close to him to refrain from taking a positive stance on the Glazers. However, this did not stop him from launching a staunch defence of them, branding the American investors as “the nicest people on the planet.”

“To be fair to the Glazers, they’re really good on the commercial side.

“The people who advise me say the fans don’t want to hear it. So I’ve got to be cautious. I get a lot of criticism if I support the Glazers, but the fact is they’re really decent people. They’re East Coast, you know — that old East Coast America, they’re very polite, they’re very civilized, they’re the nicest people on the planet. I mean, there isn’t a bad bone in Joel Glazer’s body. I mean, part of the problem is there isn’t a bad bone in his body, which is why he didn’t bloody…”

Instead of blaming the Glazers for United’s current predicament, Ratcliffe elected to point the finger at past members of the club’s executive arm – Ed Woodward and Richard Arnold in particular.

“I mean, I wouldn’t have tolerated Ed Woodward, or Richard Arnold. Richard was a rugby man, he didn’t even understand football. Ed didn’t have the credentials to manage the club. He was a merchant banker, an accountant. He wasn’t the chief executive.”

“The way I look at it is that you had two management teams at Manchester United for the past 12 years who did a poor job because the owners weren’t like, say, Steve Parish [Crystal Palace] and Daniel Levy [Tottenham Hotspur], they weren’t really into the details. Those two know what’s going on. They’re there every day and the management at their clubs are on a short leash.”

He added, “The management of Manchester United have been given a huge amount of rope. The owners just managed the club and left the football side alone and they’ve made a lot of very poor decisions over 12 years, stupid things. They made a complete cock-up of it, shocking really.”

“They couldn’t see where they were headed. The first management group, they thought they understood and wanted to get involved in buying footballers but they didn’t have the knowledge to buy footballers, you know, so they went in the marketplace, spraying money around and it was just random, wasn’t it?”

“I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that says, well, that’s just life in football, ups and downs, these things happen, because if I look at Real Madrid and Barcelona and Bayern Munich, they don’t do that. They just stay at the top. And it’s not like that here because it’s been poorly managed and they’ve made poor decisions.”

“Look, I like David Moyes, and I think he’s a really good manager, but to go from Sir Alex Ferguson to Moyes is not where I would have gone. Moyes stepped into the shoes of Ferguson, who’s won the Premier League 13 times, who won the Champions League twice and then you’re handing over to a guy that has never managed big players and had never won anything. He’s not necessarily got the personality to stand in front of them all.”

“And I don’t think Real Madrid would have made that choice as coach. If you look at coaches, a club can’t always get it right, but they should have found the best chief executive in the world, and the best coach in the world, because Manchester United is the best club in the world. Instead they got both of those decisions wrong.”

Ratcliffe continued, “So, in my mind, we have a very professional partnership with the Glazer family. But have you met them? They’re really honest, straightforward, not what you expect when you read about them in the press. And they’re both [Avram and Joel — the most involved in the club] passionate about Manchester United.”

“I like them as people — to be honest, they could have given us a bloody hard time, couldn’t they, after we cocked up with Dan Ashworth and Erik ten Hag? Could have, but didn’t.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the King Power Stadium to face Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT.

Skinner: We’ll fix uncharacteristic performance

Marc Skinner has vowed the squad will work hard over the next week to fix an “uncharacteristic” performance from Manchester United during Friday night’s WSL defeat to Liverpool.

United came into the game at Anfield off the back of seven successive league wins and initially dominated proceedings. But two Liverpool goals late in the first half made it an uphill battle after the break, with the hosts adding a third from the penalty spot before Maya Le Tissier netted a consolation.

Skinner felt that United had “control of the game” but were let down by momentary lapses and a lack of attacking ruthlessness, which he said hasn’t usually been the case for the Reds this season.

“We need to assess what we’ve done and make it better for next week,” the boss told MUTV after the final whistle, referencing the upcoming away trip to Aston Villa in nine days.

“The detail in our crossing today was off. The delivery needed to be better. If you look at it, there’s spaces where we’ve cut in and it’s just slashing at the ball. That’s way I say it was uncharacteristic.

“I looked at it and thought, ‘changes?’ But actually we had control of the game for quite a lot of it. But we weren’t ruthless enough in that final third and you’ve got to take your moments in games like this. If [with] their first touch in the box, they score, that’s on us and we have to be better at fixing that.”

On a more positive note, Gabby George’s withdrawal early in the second half was confirmed to be precautionary.

She still needs to be properly assessed, but the message from the boss was: “I don’t think there’s an injury there.”

Skinner also took a moment to discuss the loving tribute to Poppy Atkinson, whose name appeared on the starting XI graphic published before the game, and on a shirt placed on a seat in the away dugout. A moment’s silence also paid respects to the 10-year-old, tragically killed earlier this month.

“Poppy never got a chance to be named in a Manchester United team, that she loved. We thought tonight that we wanted to give her an opportunity to be part of the team,” Skinner explained.

“She’ll always be part of our team, and forever a fan of Manchester United. We’ll forever be a fan of hers. It was just a moment to share with her family, so that her family get to see her represent the team she loved. We send them all of our love and, of course, it’s heartbreaking, but if there’s anything we can do, we’ll help.”

Did you know these facts about Lyon?

0

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Saturday 15 March 2025 12:00

It’s official: Manchester United will face Lyon next in the Europa League.

We’ll go up against the seven-time Ligue Un champions in April – our fifth and sixth meetings with Les Gones, after pairs of Champions League battles in 2004 and 2008.

United are unbeaten against the team from France’s second-largest city, winning both Old Trafford encounters after draws in Lyon, but the picture has altered dramatically for our upcoming opponents in the 17 years since our most recent rendezvous.

Lyon’s septet of championships all arrived consecutively, between 2002 and 2008, under the ambitious businessman Jean-Michel Aulas. They were the top dogs then and produced talents like Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa, but Paris Saint-Germain now dominate the landscape in France.

While the capital club have watched the silverware pile up since a takeover by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, Lyon have had to make do with one major trophy success, as they claimed the Coupe de France the following year.

L’OL, as they’re referred to back home, are still one of the country’s top draws, though, and will fancy their chances of causing an upset. Here are five things you need to know about them, before the first leg on 10 April…

A NEW VENUE TO TICK OFF

Our two previous visits to Lyon involved taking in the sights and sounds of the Stade de Gerland, home of Les Gones from 1950 to 2015. The ground is still standing and is used by the city’s professional rugby team, while the footballers trot out at the impressive Groupama Stadium, located in the suburb of Decines-Charpieu.

The venue was opened in January 2016, ahead of the European Championship that summer, where it hosted six games, including a semi-final. It was also the venue of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final and held football fixtures at last summer’s Olympics. It holds a capacity of 59,000 and Alexandre Lacazette – who is now back at Lyon, following a five-year stint at Arsenal – scored the first goal there.

EXPERIENCE IN ABUNDANCE

Club captain Lacazette is a legend in these parts, scoring 190 goals and counting during his two spells, but he’s not the only squad member with a sizeable CV in the game. Nemanja Matic played for Roma and Rennes after leaving United and is now in his second campaign with Les Gones, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jordan Veretout are also midfielders boasting a Premier League past, with Arsenal and Aston Villa respectively. Corentin Tolisso has emulated Lacazette by returning to Lyon after time abroad with Bayern Munich and former Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car is back in France after an underwhelming stint at Southampton.

We’re looking forward to seeing Nemanja back in Manchester again.

THERE’S YOUNG TALENT TOO!

All that know-how has provided a base for some of Lyon’s prospective players of tomorrow to thrive, especially in Europe. Rayan Cherki has been one of the continent’s most highly rated youngsters for a number of years now and a senior France call-up is surely in the pipeline after a campaign that has seen him clock up 17 assists across Ligue Un and the Europa League. Cherki, who made his senior debut in 2019, is still only 21, but seems to be growing in influence by the week.

Lacazette has been first-choice striker for much of the season but the duties have been shared in Europe, with 19-year-old Malick Fofana scoring six goals in under 500 minutes of football. Georges Mikautadze, 24, has weighed in with four strikes after an impressive Euro 2024 for Georgia, and 21-year-old Ernest Nuamah is another option. The duo each scored twice on Thursday as Lyon completed a convincing 7-1 aggregate last-16 win over FCSB.

Rayan Cherki has posted some impressive numbers this term.

DUGOUT DISRUPTION

Although they were knocked out of the cup by minnows Bourgoin-Jallieu in January, Lyon have won four of their last five top-flight fixtures and are just two places below the Champions League qualification places. They will, however, have to make do without the influence of Paulo Fonseca until the end of the season – at least on domestic matchdays. The Portuguese manager, who was only appointed at the end of January, has been handed an unprecedented seven-month ban by the French footballing authorities after an altercation with referee Benoit Millot, meaning he cannot be in the dressing room or dugout and is not allowed to speak to his players before, during or directly after games. The ban has not been extended to European competitions at this stage. Lyon have appealed the sanction, enlisting assistant Jorge Maciel with supervising the squad in the meantime.

The Groupama Stadium, where we’ll play on Thursday 10 April.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE

The importance of this competition to Lyon grows when you consider the provisional punishment they were hit with in the autumn. In November, the body which oversees the accounts of French professional football clubs announced that L’OL would be demoted to the second tier at the end of the season, should their financial situation not improve. The decision prevented them from signing any new players in January, while six squad members were either sold or released to raise funds, including long-serving goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. A final call regarding Lyon’s status has yet to be made, but presumably the riches that come with a place in the Champions League would provide a big boost to the club’s coffers.

Man Utd insider reveals top target ‘would be interested’ in transfer as Amorim gives ‘green light’

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres “would be interested” in a transfer to Man Utd in the summer transfer window, according to a Red Devils insider.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th in the table after 28 matches.

However, they do still have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League next term if they can win the Europa League after moving into the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Only five Premier League sides have scored fewer goals than Man Utd this season with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee coming in for a lot of criticism.

The clubs two main strikers have scored just five Premier League goals between them this term and the Red Devils are expected to enter the transfer market in the summer for a top centre-forward.

Gyokeres is one of many names linked with a move to Man Utd and now Football Insider claims that Amorim has given the ‘green light’ to a transfer.

And now former Red Devils chief scout Mick Brown – who is still very well-connected at the Premier League club – is sure Gyokeres “would be interested” in a move to Old Trafford.

Brown told Football Insider: “The manager knows him better than anybody. He was a superstar for him at Sporting, just look at the goals he was scoring in that team.

“So Amorim will know whether he’s the type of striker he’s looking to bring to Man United. On that basis, he’ll be able to decide whether the step up to Premier League football is one he will be able to take with relative ease.

“When somebody comes into the English game, the first thing you get is questions about whether they’ll be able to adapt to the Premier League.

“And that’s a valid question to ask, because plenty have failed to make that jump. Amorim and Gyokeres did very well in the Portuguese league, but that’s not the Premier League.

“Just assuming Gyokeres can come to Man United and replicate the numbers he’s doing in Portugal is a bit hopeful, I think.

“But it’s the scouts’ and the manager’s job to decide whether or not he’s the right option.

“He will be the driving force behind whether or not they get this done, and I’m sure the player would be interested in the move as well.

“I think it’s clear they think he’s one of their top options, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they make a move.”

Leicester City play host to Manchester United in a rare evening kick-off in the Premier League on Sunday.

This will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season, with United winning 5-2 in the Carabao Cup, 2-1 in the FA Cup, and 3-0 in the Premier League.

It’s been a (reasonably) good month on and off the pitch for Manchester United.

Not only has Ruben Amorim guided them to a Europa League quarter-final while stepping up in the relegation battle, the Premier League’s coefficient success is opening up new routes to Europe.

As many as 11 teams may be able to sneak into UEFA competition next season, which gives United an outside chance of a quick return if they fail to win the Europa League.

On a serious note, it’s time to show United and Amorim some respect. They’re unbeaten in six inside 90 minutes and finally showed some flare against Real Sociedad.

Van Nistelrooy tried to channel a bit of Amorim by deploying a 3-4-2-1 at Stamford Bridge. It worked in the early stages but turned out to be as bad as everything else he’s tried.

In his defence, Leicester might just be very bad at playing football. They’ve lost six on the spin and there’s a case to be made for that run being extended on Sunday.

Leicester team news

For a manager to overhaul the structure of his team is rare because it can be seen as admitting defeat, but that’s what the Dutchman has done by giving 3-4-2-1 a go.

It would be even weirder to make that admission and then revert to what doesn’t work, so we’re assuming the Foxes will give their new look another go.

Mads Hermansen was protected (for want of a better phrase) by James Justin on the right, Wout Faes, Conor Coady, and Luke Thomas in the centre, with Victor Kristiansen on the left against Chelsea.

The pairing of Wilfried Ndidi and Bakary Soumare offers some steel in midfield that gives licence to Patson Daka and Bilal El Khannouss to roam free.

Jamie Vardy has 10 Premier League goal involvements this campaign at the ripe old age of 38.

Leicester expected line-up

Hermansen – Justin, Faes, Coady, Thomas, Kristiansen – Ndidi, Soumare – Daka, El Khannouss – Vardy

Man Utd team news

The treatment room at Carrington Road is still overflowing with ‘overpaid’ (Jim’s words, not ours) footballers but there was some good news on Thursday as Manuel Ugarte made the bench.

Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Amad Diallo are still injured.

Patrick Dorgu’s suspension should mean Noussair Mazraou returns on the right and Diogo Dalot shuffles to the left.

Mason Mount will return to the squad this weekend and could be joined on the bench by Harry Maguire, who Amorim is eager ‘not to risk’.

Ayden Heaven is in line for his first Premier League start, sitting on the left of a back three featuring Matthijs de Light and anchored by the recalled Victor Lindelof.

Manuel Ugarte may be preferred to Casemiro, which may mean Bruno Fernandes moving to the left side of the two-man midfield.

Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund did more than enough against Sociedad to warrant retaining their spot in the side.

Man Utd expected line-up

Onana – Mazraoui, De Ligt, Lindelof, Heaven, Dalot – Ugarte, Fernandes – Garnacho, Zirkzee – Hojlund

Leicester vs Man Utd: How to watch and listen

Sunday’s game will be televised live on Sky Sports Main Event, Premier League and UHD. There will be live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Leicester vs Man Utd stats:

Man Utd have beaten Leicester 5-2, 3-0 and 2-1 in three meetings this season.

Leicester have lost each of their last three Premier League meetings without scoring.

Leicester have lost 12 Premier League matches either side of a shock 2-1 win against Tottenham.

Man Utd are unbeaten in six matches inside 90 minutes, which is their second-best run of the season. Their previous high was a seven-match stint involving two wins against the Foxes.

If United were to win this fixture again, Van Nistelrooy will boast two wins as United manager and two losses as Leicester manager in the same season.

Leicester are two goals away from having conceded 1,000 goals as a Premier League team.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (Leicester) quotes

On Man Utd’s improvement:

“That’s a great boost and a good win.

“Bruno is in great form, scoring a hat-trick and then scored the free-kick against Arsenal, so very decisive in that team.

“So, it’s a team that I think got some momentum going, especially after yesterday. It’s definitely a team that is in a better place than when we played them in the FA Cup.”

On results not matching performances:

“We showed against Chelsea, we showed up, we were there. I think if you saw us playing and you don’t know any context, then you would see a team and say, ‘OK, this is a proper team.

“A positive result would do us really good. That is really clear, it’s what we’re working for and what we took from the Chelsea game.

“It’s what we’ve worked on this week to develop the structures we’ve put in place. We were able to build on that and bring it into Sunday’s game.
“With the break, it would give a good boost to get a positive result.”

On persisting with the new system:

“We were able to develop that and evaluate the Chelsea game – what went well and where we can improve. We look at United over the coming days and prepare to present ourselves in the best possible way. That structure has definitely been part of training.”

Ruben Amorim (Man Utd) quotes

On his ideas starting to show through:

“I feel that in the last games that we can understand better the idea of what we want to do. We are better understanding the plan for the games.

“We are not suffering one goal and then losing our minds by suffering another goal. We are understanding the moments of the game and also we are understanding better the way we want to play.

“I know that in football, especially in our moment, we can have a really good moment and then drop really fast. So our focus is to continue and don’t be too happy or too depressed. My idea is to continue, we have to survive.”

On the influence of Bruno Fernandes:

“He is so important for this team and you can see from the numbers and the last games he is always the guy who scores. It is not the most important thing or the only thing – but he is always there.

“When you play for this team you have to be prepared for the critics and I understand that former players had a lot of success here and the standard for them was so high. They see things like that in black and white.

Life is sometimes not black and white – there are other colours and you have to understand that context. He is always there, trying his best. I am really proud to coach a player like him.”

On Mason Mount and his return:

“We need him and every player. He cannot play too many minutes but just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.

“I really love Mason Mount. I see him and know how he suffered. I know how he does everything right – he eats right, his physical aspect is perfect. When a player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here at the club. We will try to manage the load.”

Leicester vs Man Utd referee stats:

Referee Thomas Bramall spends most of his time in the Championship but will take charge of a Premier League fixture for the 20th time this weekend.

The 35-year-old Sheffield native is often kept away from games at the top of the Championship but recently took charge of promoted side Southampton’s 4-0 battering at Stamford Bridge.

The 15 senior fixtures he’s taken charge of across the EPL and EFL this season have averaged just 2.46 goals.

VAR Alex Chilowicz came under fire from West Ham boss Graham Potter for his awarding of Newcastle’s winner on Monday Night Football, allegedly scored by foul means after Max Kilman was nudged in the back.

The 38-year-old enjoyed a successful career as an MLS referee but has yet to take charge of a Premier League match.

Leicester vs Man Utd prediction:

Ruud tore up Plan A and threw it in the bin against Chelsea, abandoning his principles in favour of a Ruben Amorim inspired 3-4-2-1. It worked well for around 20 minutes before the Foxes were overpowered.

A fresh approach was sorely needed after losing each of their last five Premier League fixtures without scoring and each of their last six at the King Power Stadium.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s 42nd minute strike at Old Trafford is the only goal they’ve produced in 580 minutes of football, yet there’s reason to believe they can score on Sunday.

You can make a strong case for them deserving to have scored against Crystal Palace and Man City as those fixtures yielded 1.7xG and 1.3xG respectively.

United target world-class keeper to replace beleaguered Onana, just £25m would seal the deal – report

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to spend €30 million to sign Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.

Despite improving on last season, the Red Devils have still conceded far too many goals and this has often been down to Andre Onana’s erratic form.

The Cameroonian has made some high-profile mistakes, especially in the Premier League which have cost his side points.

Consequently, United have been linked to strengthening their goalkeeping department and there have been rumours that they could make a move for former target Zion Suzuki who is at Parma.

The Peoples Person has also already relayed that they have serious interest in French keeper Lucas Chevalier at LOSC Lille.

Reports in Spain (via Football 365) report that world-class shot-stopper Jan Oblak is also a serious target to replace the beleaguered Onana.

The article states, “the interest in the Slovenian is not exclusive to United. Manchester City also value his potential as a possible replacement for Ederson. Although in Old Trafford they seem to be better positioned to close the deal.”

The Red Devils are said to want to rebuild their squad with talented players and the big Slovenian is a “key piece in their sporting project.”

Los Colchoneros have the player tied down to 2028 but they will reportedly “not place obstacles” in his way as long as their economic demands are met.

“There is talk of a minimum amount of €30 million to finalise the deal, an amount that can be matched by a club with the financial power of United.”

The outlet finishes by saying that as the summer market approaches, “everything indicates that Atlético de Madrid’s goal could undergo a significant change and that Oblak’s fate will be in the English league.”

Oblak has continued his fine form this season as he has conceded just 32 goals in 36 matches in all competitions. At 32 years of age, he would be something of a short-term fix were he to join, albeit a world-class one.

Video: United’s Women’s title hopes all but extinguished in crushing 3-1 loss to Liverpool

Manchester United Women were defeated 3-1 at Anfield by Liverpool to all but end their slim title hopes in the Women’s Super League.

United started well and good pressing by Celin Bizet led to her intercepting a stray Liverpool pass and she bore down on goal and unleashed a powerful effort that was well tipped away by the home keeper, Rachael Laws.

The away side continued their bright start and an unmarked Gabby George headed directly at the Liverpool keeper from a corner kick.

Laws was equal to everything United threw at her as Grace Clinton expertly spun on the edge of the area and her fierce shot was beaten away by the in-form keeper once more.

Liverpool finally ventured forward and in the 42nd minute they got their reward. Olivia Smith ran down the right wing beating numerous United players before firing underneath Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

It was a poor effort for the United keeper to concede as she has been in such imperious form this season.

The home side had their tail up and Cornelia Kapocs ran at the United defence on the counter and cut in to unleash a powerful effort that was well parried by Tullis-Joyce.

United were then sucker-punched when Liverpool grabbed their second of the evening.

Midfielder Sam Kerr was given too much time to meander into the United box and she picked out Fuka Nagano, who whipped the ball into the far corner with an excellent first time strike giving United’s American keeper no chance this time.

The half-time whistle blew and despite United’s early pressure, it was their great rivals who went in leading.

United pressed for an equaliser but found little luck and disaster struck as Jayde Riviere was judged to bring down Alejandra Bernabé in the box.

Smith stepped up to the spot and sent Tullis-Joyce the wrong way to firmly put Liverpool in control of the match.

United carved out a chance later in the half when good work from substitute Melvine Malard down the left hand side resulted in a ball across goal that was struck by fellow sub Hinata Miyazawa. Sadly, the ball was right at Laws.

The away side finally got some sort of reward when Maya Le Tissier broke through the Liverpool midfield and slotted the ball past Laws to give United late hope and make it 3-1.

There was to be no comeback however and the Red Devils lost their first game of 2025 and fall to third place, eight points behind leaders Chelsea.

United will next be in action when they travel to face Aston Villa on Sunday 23rd March, where they will be hoping to bounce back with a victory to keep up their dreams of Champions League qualification for the first time in their history.

Bruno Fernandes has revealed to Inside United how he is trying to turn the tables on goalkeepers, when it comes to penalties.

While much has been made of the fact the men between the sticks closely study the takers, down to the minute detail of their previous preferences, our skipper told the latest edition of the official club magazine that he takes time to analyse the goalkeepers and how they act during spot-kicks.

Fernandes’s two spot-kicks, as part of his hat-trick against Real Sociedad on Thursday night, tighten his grip on a club record that is already his own.

The Portugal international notched his 35th and 36th successful conversions for the Reds, moving him further ahead of the player to have scored the next-most penalties for United, Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman, now in charge of our next opponents Leicester City, bagged 28 of his 150 United goals from the spot.

In a big exclusive interview in Inside United, released this week, Bruno discussed his penalty-taking record, revealing how much thought and preparation goes into each opportunity he gets from 12 yards – and how he works to keep goalkeepers guessing.

“When you take so many penalties, then you need to change, because the goalkeepers start looking at you, studying you,” the skipper says in the in-depth magazine interview. “So as they do that, I do the same as them. I study them.”

Bruno says that he looks at how goalkeepers have faced spot-kicks previously, and decides on which technique is likely to be the most successful.

“I see all the different penalty-takers that they have against them. I see what is the accuracy of them. I feel more comfortable doing the jump and waiting for the goalkeeper to make a decision. I think this is the more accurate one. But if I have to change it, I do it differently, to not give anything away to them.

“You can still miss but, at least, you know, everything you’re doing is for a reason and, obviously everyone is different.”

Bruno goes on to speak in more depth about spot-kicks and you can read the full interview in the April edition of Inside United, on sale now in shops and newsagents, at Old Trafford on matchdays, and available to buy online here.

All-time most penalties scored for United

1. Bruno Fernandes – 36
2. Ruud van Nistelrooy – 28
3. Wayne Rooney- 27
4. Cristiano Ronaldo – 21
5. Eric Cantona – 18
5. Albert Quixall – 18

‘Desperate’ Man Utd player ‘makes up mind’ on transfer after Ratcliffe ‘overpaid’ dig

Man Utd winger Antony has decided that he wants to remain at Spanish side Real Betis at the end of the season, according to reports.

The Red Devils have had a nightmare season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th after 28 matches.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November and identified a number of players who didn’t in with his plans at Old Trafford, with Antony one of those flops to depart.

Antony, who joined Man Utd in a £85m deal from Ajax in 2022, didn’t start a Premier League match in the first half of the season and Amorim’s 3-4-3 system didn’t suit the Brazilian, who was shipped out on loan to La Liga side Real Betis.

But Antony has found a new home at Betis with the Brazil international providing two goals and two assists in his first six La Liga matches for the Spanish outfit, while he has bagged two goals in four Europa Conference League fixtures.

And now The Sun (via the Daily Express) claim that Antony has ‘made up his mind’ on a transfer in the summer with the winger ‘desperate’ to leave Man Utd for Spain permanently.

Relaying The Sun‘s information, the Daily Express wrote:

‘According to The Sun, Antony is keen to stay in Spain, with sources close to the player suggesting he is eager to remain at Real Betis, while Real Sociedad are also interested.

‘Given United’s financial woes, they would likely consider serious offers for Antony, despite facing a significant loss on the £82million they paid for him two-and-a-half years ago.’

It comes hot on the heels of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s interview on Monday in which he called out five Man Utd stars, including Antony, for being “overpaid” and “not good enough”.

Ratcliffe said: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho.

“These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out. For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.

“Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid. But for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time. We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.”

Amorim insisted that the reason Antony struggled to get to grips with the Premier League was his “physicality” but the Brazilian’s agent recently hit back at the Man Utd boss’ “very superficial argument”.

Antony’s agent Junior Pedroso said: “We respect the opinion of coach Ruben Amorim, but we completely disagree with his analysis. To attribute Antony’s lack of success at Manchester United solely to the question of physicality is a very superficial argument and does not reflect reality.

“The truth is that Antony has not had enough prominence or the confidence necessary to play his best football. Of the 15 games in which Amorim managed Manchester United, he only used Antony in nine, with a total of 252 minutes played.

“This represents only 18.6% of the total possible minutes (1,350 minutes). How can you judge an athlete without a minimum sequence to prove his worth?”

Pedroso continued: “The manager’s statement, although perhaps it was not his intention, ends up devaluing La Liga and the Spanish competitions.

“Spanish football has one of the most competitive leagues in the world, with top-level teams that constantly compete in the final stages of the Champions League and the Europa League.

“The reality is that Antony, since he arrived at Real Betis, has become one of the best players in the team and in the competition itself, demonstrating his full potential when given the right conditions to develop his game.

“This highlights that the problem was not the physicality, but the context and the way he was managed in Manchester.

“Many players who do not prosper at United find success at other clubs, which leads us to wonder if the problem really lies with the players.”
