Ian Willcock to leave United Women

0

Friday 21 March 2025 13:00

Women’s goalkeeping coach Ian Willcock will leave Manchester United at the end of the season, to take up the corresponding position with the Canada Women’s national team.

Willcock has been United Women’s goalkeeping coach since the team’s reformation in 2018 and is set to pursue an exciting career opportunity elsewhere in the summer, after seven years of high-quality service in Manchester.

The move will see ‘Willco’ reunite with former Reds boss Casey Stoney, who first brought him to the club as a member of her coaching staff and is now in charge of the Canadian team.

Ian has been a highly regarded member of United’s coaching team ever since joining the club and has played an instrumental role in the history made by the Reds over the last seven seasons.

While looking to positively impact the younger keepers in our Girls Academy, his main responsibility has seen him work with our women’s first-team shot-stoppers on a day-to-day basis, helping to drive league-leading standards for the position.

Under his stewardship, United notably conceded just seven times in 20 matches en route to lifting the Championship title in 2018/19 and later set a Women’s Super League clean-sheets record in 2022/23, stopping the opposition from scoring an unprecedented 14 times in 22 games.

That run helped Mary Earps, who joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer, to claim the division’s Golden Glove award either side of winning The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper accolade for 2022 and 2023 – two personal prizes among many that she referenced Willcock’s contribution to upon receiving.

Earps then celebrated team success with Willco when the Reds won our first major women’s trophy, the FA Cup, at Wembley Stadium last May and the latter has since overseen Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s impressive emergence as our first-choice goalkeeper this season.

Tullis-Joyce’s 10 WSL clean sheets in 2024/25 is a division-high tally and, in a recent interview with club media, the American talked up the renowned goalkeepers’ union here that has helped her to thrive – a culture that she says has been fostered by Willcock.

“The bond is definitely special here, I think that starts with Willco,” our no.91 said. “He creates an environment where we know our personalities can shine and that’s what I hope you see on the field too.”

Willcock will now be looking to help our goalkeepers finish the season strongly, before linking up with a Canada squad that could include United defender Jayde Riviere and midfielder Simi Awujo.

While his incredible knowledge of the game and friendly personality will be missed around Carrington and Leigh Sports Village, everyone at the club would like to wish Willco the very best for his upcoming chapter.

Harry Kane to Man Utd, Arsenal ‘truth’ revealed as Red Devils ‘want to pay £40m’ for another Bundesliga star

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk has revealed the truth about rumours that Man Utd and Arsenal are looking to sign Harry Kane in the summer.

The Red Devils and the Gunners are both keen to sign a new goalscoring centre-forward in the summer after both sides look likely to fail to reach their targets this term.

Man Utd have struggled to get their strikers scoring this season with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee coming in for a lot of criticism.

Hojlund and Zirkzee have scored just three goals each in the Premier League this season with only six Premier League clubs scoring fewer goals than Man Utd.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have scored enough goals but fans, pundits and former players insist they could do with a top-class centre-forward to unlock tight games for them and make the difference at crucial points in the season.

Both sides were recently linked to former Tottenham striker Harry Kane with reports claiming that Arsenal and Man Utd were preparing to activate his release clause.

But Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk has now dismissed those reports and confirmed interested clubs must now wait until next winter to trigger a release clause.

Falk wrote in his Caught Offside column: ‘❌Not True: Arsenal and Manchester United are preparing to activate Harry Kane’s release clause this summer. Kane’s €100m release clause, previously ready to be activated in the prior winter is no longer an option for clubs ahead of the summer. If an interested suitor wants to sign him, they have to wait to trigger his next release clause (€80m), which activates in the next winter window.’

On Man Utd and Arsenal’s general search for a striker, Falk added: ‘Arsenal is heavily linked with Benjamin Sesko. Also, from our view, at Leipzig, they know it’s very realistic that he’s going to leave the club in the summer. They would talk with €70m on the table. Frankfurt are demanding €80m for Hugo Ekitike, so if someone is willing to pay this price they can sign him.

‘I think these two players will be in the Premier League this summer but the question is which club! Newcastle will search for a new striker, whilst Manchester United are currently searching. We don’t yet know if Alexander Isak to Liverpool will work, so there are three clubs in the mix with two prominent Bundesliga strikers on the table ahead of the summer window.’

A report in Bild on Thursday insisted that Man Utd ‘want to shell out’ €48m to sign Felix Nmecha from Wolfsburg and Falk has confirmed that it’s ‘true’.

Falk continued: ‘True✅: Manchester United are interested in Felix Nmecha (24). The Red Devils want to pay £40m for the footballer. He joined from VfL Wolfsburg for €30m in 2023. If BVB miss out on Champions League football, he could be one of several players they’re forced to sell.’

Liverpool must avoid Rashford mistake and must not ‘blink first and lose’ like Manchester United

Jamie Carragher is right. Mo Salah ‘cannot be trusted’ with a three-year deal and this past week has given Liverpool all the negotiating power again.

Winningest teams?
Perhaps the phrase Paul McDevitt is looking for is ‘most successful’ rather than ‘most winningest’.

Also, just to point out that Manchester United (presuming it is who he is referring to) do not have a monopoly on the suffix ‘United’ just as Manchester City do not have any claim to ‘City’ and so on. It’s presumptive and ignorant.
A, LFC, Montreal

The birds and the Bees
I’ve heard/read in many places (including in the mood rankings on here) bewilderment at Brentford’s weird ‘all the points at home in the first half of the season, and now all the points away in the second half’. This site commented ‘We’re plebs and don’t really understand what wider point Brentford are trying to make with this season-long masterpiece, but we know deep down it is something very profound that speaks to the sheer futility of the human condition and the cruel indifference of the natural world’.

Here are their first 8 home games; Crystal Palace, Southampton, West Ham, Wolves, Ipswich, Bournemouth, Leicester, and Newcastle. (They started with Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, Man Utd away…). It’s almost like in the second half of the season those fixtures have been reversed, and Brentford are very good against teams similar to or worse than them, and not so good against teams a bit better than them.

Next up from me; who shot JFK?!

…”So again I ask, would Arsenal fans trade their last 4 trophyless years, for 1 FA & 1 Carling cup”

And again, my mind doesn’t change. If you’re asking me if I would swap Arsenal’s last 4 years for United’s, then there’s no chance. United are an absolute mess. They’re the biggest failure in football history in terms of money spent over the last decade.

I keep having to point this out to you but here we go again. We won the FA Cup twice while finishing 5th and 8th. It was not enjoyable. I would’ve still been fairly miserable last season if I were a United fan after winning the FA Cup because I would be smart enough to know how sh*t we would be next season. I forgot though United fans are not like this. They are delusional and thought they would improve. I remember they had an amazing record this season like one win in 10 games and they kept talking about how Amorim has changed them haha. Plucky underdogs, just keep spending stupid money and you’ll manage to come 17th.

Carragher is right
Liverpool should be worried about giving hefty 3 year contracts to two  34 year olds who failed to cut it against the best in the world.

Salah can not be trusted with a 3 year contract if they want to win the Champions league.

The only reason for keeping him is to fight for PSL again. He is still good but the only way is downhill from here. Imagine in 3 years time Liverpool playing Barcelona or PSG again with Salah in the team. He will definitely be a passenger again. Right now he is even low on confidence because even Newcastle managed to shut him out.

Next season teams will be better and he won’t be able to put up the  numbers he has managed this year.

It is a catch 22 situation of cause but everything is worth a rethink now after the team choked in the 2 cups.

Maybe investing in proper players now and letting one of Salah or Virgil stay is the best option. Of which i feel Virgil is harder to replace and his leadership qualities are very important.

I’d also argue a Liverpool striker whether it’s Darwin or a newcomer cannot put up big numbers as long as Salah remains in the team. Same reason why our midfielders struggle with assists and goals as well.

Fortune favours the brave. The decision has to be made and it is the best time now for Liverpool because contract negotiations are a matter of timing and momentum.

Salah had momentum all along but now it has swung back to the club.

Rashford was lucky with his season of 30+ goals and he renewed, if it wasn’t for that he’d probably be earning a £100k less. Unfortunately Man U blinked first and they lost the game.

Is there anything right with the Nations League?
Call me old – fashioned, but in my mind, the point of competitive sport is that teams that are good at sport should get rewarded more handsomely than teams that aren’t as good.I’m sure most fans know, but for those who don’t, the Nations League rankings for World Cup play-off spots automatically puts the 16 group winners in the top 16 spots. Group winners from every level – be they high or low.

That means San Marino, who triumphed in League D1, ahead of Gibraltar & Liechtenstein, are ranked than higher than Italy, who, humiliatingly, were beaten out to second by France in Group A2 – by goal difference.

What makes this farce even worse is that the knockout stages have no bearing on it- so Italy can win the Nations league and still get outranked by San Marino.

Teams ranked 5-16 are just skipped over-  as are teams ranked 21-32 & 37-48. Just ignored.

This is a)rewarding teams for not being good, and b) incentivising relegation.

This anti-meritocracy policy has been around since the Nations League began, with the lower leagues allowed their own path to the Euros in both 2021 & 2024.

I’ve nothing against minnows having their day in the sun, but this system is horrendously unfair to every team bar the one lucky one or two that benefit.

Why on earth should teams who aren’t as good qualify ahead of teams that are better??

This is a far from the Nation’s League only sin- changing up the rules every time, confusing the hell out of everybody, having two leg knockouts, having a 3rd/4th play off & generally being much more of a nuisance than it’s worth.

I’m looking forward to the next installment, which no doubt will introduce a 3rd leg for the knockouts & relegation play-offs, with the neutral third legs all taking simultaneously in Riyadh- halftime show presented by Mastercard.

There has to be a better system out there- cos there just can’t be a worse one.

More peeves
Following on from my email yesterday, and also partly due to finishing Yellowstone and there being no football I care to watch on the TV this week, my miserable old brain got me back to my current list of peeves with football last night so thought I’d share a few more;

1. Squad numbers.
Not so much your Quansah 87’s or Foden 47’s, but players who pick a first 11 number when it’s clearly not even close to their position. Remember William Gallas in the Arsenal 10? And that Wolves goalie (his name escapes me and my Google is broken) who was allowed to wear 11 a couple of seasons ago? No, just no. Stop it. Oh, and while I’m here, full backs wearing the opposite number, i.e. RB in 3 and LB in 2. It’s wrong and it needs to be stopped (I can just about accept 4 at CB and 6 at CDM, but we all know it should be the other way round).

2. Club statements when a manager is sacked.
If I have to read another “The club would like to thank Joe Bloggs for his efforts, blah blah blah” press release, I fear I could be pushed over the edge and into something ridiculous like veganism, or going to the gym. Now I’m not saying clubs should be cruel and refer to said departing individual as “every useless c*** under the sun” or similar (although if any club press officers are reading this, go on, I dare you), but surely the club individuals responsible for these announcements could find a little bit of individuality, rather than just trotting out the same old b*llocks again and again.

3. TV pundits wearing black trainers with white souls.
They literally all wear them don’t they, but why? I can only think TNT/Sky etc issue you a pair on your first day in the gig.

4. Micah Richards and those f**king nauseating We Buy Any Car adverts.
I know it rhymes with We Buy Any Car, but no football crowd ANYWHERE EVER has chanted “you’re offside by far” at a game. And while I’m on Micah, can anyone confirm how he managed to keep his hair so immaculately trimmed during lock down when the rest of us ended up looking like Frank Gallagher from Shameless? It’s almost like he decided because he’s rich and famous, the rules for us little people didn’t apply to him.
Andy FTM (genuinely not bothered about what it says on Tommy T’s passport because I’m a grown up. But Jordan f*ckin Henderson? Really? Conor Gallagher must be crying into his paella)

“Bring the heat”: The 1958 announce historic move in latest round of protests against Glazers

Manchester United fan group the 1958 have launched their latest protest initiative.

Numerous groups of supporters have been dismayed by the direction the club owners have recently taken when it comes down to trying to drive down the club’s debt.

Ineos have announced unpopular methods like staff cuts and a hike in matchday tickets.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has claimed that the club is in such a financial mess that such drastic measures are a necessary evil but it is safe to say he still has much work to do to convince a lot of the fanbase.

It was recently reported that ticket prices will go up once again next month and The 1958 group have already held a mass protest before the match against Arsenal earlier in the month.

Two days ago, they announced a new round of protests to reflect fan anger.

“On the 29th March we will be at Broadhurst Park for the first event of its kind. A joint protest against Glazer ownership as part of FCUM ‘The United United’ day.”

It means United fans will join FC United of Manchester supporters to unite in the common aim of trying to remove the Glazer family from Manchester United.

The 1958 claim “we have stated our intent to unify our fractured fanbase across all key groups. This is not an easy task. It is clear that somebody has to put a line in the sand then step over it. We will take that step.”

They state that they have recently held productive meetings with fans of FC United of Manchester and they have agreed to work together moving forward.

Whilst admitting there was some history to overcome, they agreed to a Q&A session on Saturday 29th at Broadhurst Park.

The 1958 claim that they “will attempt to unify fan groups” and that they will “form a unity charter to outline actions and escalations against Glazer ownership.”

They finished the statement by asserting, “we encourage all United fans to join our unified protest which will be at the Stockton Town game. Bring your banners. Bring the heat. Bring the noise.”

Hojlund explains ‘Siuu’ celebration for Denmark

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Friday 21 March 2025 10:07

Manchester United centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund followed up his goal in the victory at Leicester City with Denmark’s winner against Portugal.

Our no.9 only came on in the 69th minute but made the decisive contribution to the UEFA Nations League quarter-final first leg in Copenhagen.

He marked the composed finish, applied to a clever cross from Andreas Skov Olsen, with a ‘Siuu’ celebration that Cristiano Ronaldo has made his own, as the legendary former Red looked on.

Afterwards, Rasmus was keen to point out that it was very much a mark of respect to a player he admired so much growing up.

Diogo Dalot denied Christian Eriksen an international goal in Copenhagen.

“It’s for my idol,” he told broadcaster TV2. “It wasn’t to mock him or anything. He’s had such a huge impact on me and my football career.

“Maybe it’s a bit ambivalent but to score against him and Portugal, it’s huge. I remember him scoring from a free-kick in 2011, when I went to watch the match, and, since then, I’ve been a huge Cristiano fan.”

Ronaldo, now with Al Nassr, was unable to add to his ridiculous international goal tally of 135 on the night, but there is still the second leg to come, in Lisbon on Sunday.

Christian Eriksen could have got on the scoresheet himself, after his volley was handled by Renato Veiga inside the area. The United midfielder stepped up to take the penalty but Diogo Costa dived to make a superb save, after the keeper appeared to be given words of advice by Ronaldo.

Eriksen then had a shot cleared off the line by Diogo Dalot, who started the game for the visitors, along with Bruno Fernandes.

Our skipper was disappointed with his nation’s performance and the outcome.

“We knew they were aggressive and that they would come out strong,” said Fernandes.

“We lacked aggression and needed to be stronger in the duels.

“We have a difficult game ahead of us but we really want to win, and, at home with our fans, we are sure that we’ll be able to turn the game around.”

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu came on as a late substitute for the hosts, as they celebrated a hard-fought win in the Danish capital.

Elsewhere in the UEFA Nations League, the Netherlands drew 2-2 with Spain.

Matthijs de Ligt was introduced for the final six minutes of the first leg, for former Red Memphis Depay, but was unable to prevent the 10 men (Jorrel Hato had been sent off) holding on to their slender lead, with Arsenal’s Mikel Merino netting an injury-time equaliser.

It was the 50th cap for our in-form central defender.

Goals by Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders had overturned the opener by Spain’s Nico Williams.

The second leg is also on Sunday, at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.

Free agent Jonathan David reveals his preferred destination as Europe’s elite circle – report

Manchester United summer target Jonathan David has claimed that his preferred next destination is La Liga in Spain.

The Canadian forward is out of contract in the summer and it appears he will be a free agent, as he has announced that he won’t sign a new deal with his current team LOSC Lille.

The Red Devils have been linked to the striker as they need to fill a void at the top of the pitch, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee being far from prolific this season.

Players like Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Liam Delap have all been linked to a move but David would provide a significantly cheaper option.

Nonetheless, while admitting he would be open to a move to England, it was stressed by the player that it was not his preference.

Appearing on Sky Sports’ The Overlap US, the 25 year old asserted he had the skillset to play in any league.

“To be honest, I think I can adapt to every league. Obviously, every league has their differences; I think the Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than the other leagues.”

Nonetheless, the forward then admitted that a move to Spain would be the most attractive option for him in the future.

“But, me, always when I grew up, I grew up watching a lot of La Liga. That would be my preferred league, but I think that’s the league I enjoyed watching the most, so I think – one day – I would like to play there but will that happen? I don’t know.”

Finally, he did not close the door to a potential move to England though and said, “I’m not opposed to anything, we’ll just see where the future takes us.”

The forward has been heavily linked to a move to FC Barcelona and was said to be in advanced negotiations with the club.

The Canadian has already bagged 23 goals and 10 assists this season and will certainly attract a lot of interest from Europe’s biggest teams in this summer market.

100% long ball accuracy, 91% pass accuracy, 2 key passes: United star runs show in impressive win for nation

Manchester United had numerous players involved in Nations League duty last night.

Rasmus Hojlund stole the show with his winning goal in Denmark’s 1-0 first leg win over Portugal but there were four other United players involved in the match.

Christian Eriksen was also on the winning side and played 86 minutes of the match.

He was well-involved, as he had a passing accuracy of 91% and had 53 touches of the ball.

Two of his passes were also deemed key ones. The 33 year old also completed all three of his long ball attempts.

Eriksen also had three shots on target, one off and three blocked as he was a constant thorn in the side of the Portuguese.

He did miss a penalty however when Diogo Costa dived to his right to parry his effort away from goal.

Bruno Fernandes played the entire match for the Portuguese side and had 84 touches, making 85% of his pass attempts.

Two out of his three crosses were successful and he made three out of his four ground duels.

He was unusually quiet in front of goal however, just having one shot off target.

Fernandes won his two ground duels and half of his aerial battles.

Diogo Dalot also started the match and played 66 minutes before being subbed off.

He had one clearance, one blocked shot and one interception in the game.

Dalot also only won one out of his four ground duels and did not compete in an aerial battle.

The fullback was more involved getting forward as he made two key passes and was accurate with 76% of his passing attempts.

Patrick Dorgu also came on for Denmark for the last few minutes of the game.

The two sides will meet again in the second leg of the quarter-final on Sunday night, with the tie on a knife-edge.

Finally, Matthijs de Ligt came on as late substitute in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Spain in another Nations League quarter final. They will also play the second leg on Sunday evening.

Contract news: Turner signs to June 2028

Friday 21 March 2025 10:00

Manchester United is pleased to confirm that defender Millie Turner has signed a contract extension with the club until June 2028.

As one of the ‘originals’ who has been with the club since the formation of its women’s team in 2018, Turner was a key part of the sides that won the 2019 Women’s Championship title, earned UEFA Champions League qualification in 2023, and lifted the FA Cup for the first time last season.

Millie has made 167 appearances in red – the second-most of any women’s player for Manchester United – and scored 11 goals.

Congratulations on your new contract, Millie!

Marc Skinner said: “Millie has been here since the beginning, and she is an important part of the team. She’s part of my leadership group but I still think there is even more growth to come. We have unfinished business and aspirations for success, she is hungry to keep improving and a key person in driving the high standards we have here as a club.”

Matt Johnson, interim head of women’s football, said: “As a product of the United Academy and part of the original squad back in 2018, Millie is still so important to the squad today. As a true Red, Millie brings enthusiasm and positivity to the squad off the pitch and her performances on the pitch have consistently proven she is one of the best centre backs in the WSL. Retaining talent like Millie is crucial to our future success.”
