Rashford labels incredible United youngster “future star”, PL rivals are “desperate” to lure him away from Old Trafford – report

Marcus Rashford has praised Manchester United wonderkid Joseph Junior (JJ) Gabriel following his debut for the Under-18s.

Fresh from their FA Youth Cup semi-final heartbreak, United U18s got back on their feet in style, registering a thumping 13-1 win over Leeds United.

Many young talents made headlines with their remarkable performances, including captain Victor Musa, who scored a first-half double hat-trick.

Gabriel, 14, meanwhile,  grabbed the attention on his debut with two goals after coming on as a substitute late in the game. He also made history by becoming the youngest-ever player to play for the club’s Under-18s.

The young sensation, who has been nicknamed “Kid Messi” owing to his eye-catching dribbling ability and style of play, celebrated his debut against Leeds with a post on Instagram.

In the comment section, Rashford joined many in congratulating and hailing the United talent.

The Englishman, who is also the product of the club’s famed academy, wrote “future star” below the post. Gabriel thanked him with an emoji.

There’s plenty of excitement concerning Gabriel’s potential at the club. However, the latest performance is only going to intensify interest from elsewhere.

According to the Daily Mail, United “know they are in a battle to keep him with two key windows, one at 14 and one at 16, important in academy football.”

It is understood that several Premier League clubs are “desperate” to snatch Gabriel from United. The likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have also been credited with interest in the player.

However, his swift promotion to the Under-18s suggests the Mancunian giants are keen on showing him that they are the best place for his development.

Meanwhile, Rashford, who is away on loan, has enjoyed a positive start at Aston Villa. Still, the academy graduate’s long-term future is not seen at Old Trafford.

Impressive Yoro explains role under Ruben Amorim

Monday 07 April 2025 13:00

Leny Yoro’s Manchester derby performance on Sunday impressed many, and the young Manchester United defender discussed his mentality and role under Ruben Amorim with us post-match.

Still only 19, Yoro joined United from Lille last summer and has overcome two spells out with injury to show what he’s capable of.

After a midweek display at Nottingham Forest which featured some crucial defensive contributions — including a goal-saving tackle on Anthony Elanga — Leny delivered another eye-catching performance against City in the weekend’s 0-0 draw. His driving runs out of defence to initiate United attacks in a tight game were of particular note.

“The three defenders need to control the game,” Yoro explained in conversation with club media at Old Trafford.

Yoro: We have to continue like this Video

Yoro: We have to continue like this

Leny Yoro said the clean sheet and performance against City were positive and United are improving…

“If I can bring the ball forward for the strikers, for the midfielders, it is good for us, so I try to do it.

“[Ruben] asked me to do it. I am ready to do it and I can do it.”

The stats show as much. Yoro has enjoyed a pass completion rate of around 90 per cent in these two recent games, and anyone watching can see that such accuracy is not down to caution in his play.

“He’s putting in some really important performances,” reflected MUTV pundit Phil Bardsley after the game.

“He had a slow start to his United career due to an unfortunate injury but we’re starting to see a real player now.”

Yoro accepted that as well as the injury he sustained in pre-season, which ruled him out until December, he took some time to fully adapt to the English game.

“I had a little bit of adaptation when I came, but now it is better in every game,” he said.

A rising star? Leny Yoro is showing “world-class” signs, according to two former Reds.

“I think in every game I try to be better. I try to help the team and to be at 100 per cent.

“We played really well [against City]. I think we maybe deserved to score one goal. We have the clean sheet and one point but we need to continue like that, we have a lot of improvement now, so we need to continue.”

Two-time Champions League-winning United defender Wes Brown rates Yoro highly.

“He’s really young but everybody straight away expects him to be world class,” Brown said.

“I think he’s showing signs of that. It’s difficult coming to the Premier League so young and dominating, but I think as the games have gone by, he’s got better and better and better.

“He’s athletic, tall, good on the ball and did a few runs on the ball today. He can do that, and he’s doing it against Manchester City, not just any team! The confidence will come in his game and he’ll be more assured of himself in certain areas.”

Tullis-Joyce makes senior debut for United States

Monday 07 April 2025 12:43

On the back of a standout season so far for Manchester United, goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce earned her first senior cap for the US Women’s National Team over the weekend.

The United shot-stopper played the entirety of the Olympic champions’ 2-0 friendly victory over Brazil on Saturday, marking her big outing at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles with a clean sheet.

While that was the result of an all-round defensive effort from the USA, Phallon made a string of saves to keep her side ahead after Trinity Rodman’s fifth-minute opener, most notably making herself big at the feet of Gabi Portilho to deny a dangerous one-on-one attempt in the first half.

That was before Lindsey Heaps then doubled the hosts’ lead and completed the scoring after the break, firing home emphatically from the penalty spot.

All eyes on Phallon! The game was attended by more than 32,000 fans in Los Angeles.

For Tullis-Joyce, her international debut is just the latest milestone of what has proved to be a breakout season for club and country, during which the 28-year-old has impressively grown into the role of our first-choice goalkeeper.

Our no.91’s form in the WSL, now boasting a division-high 12 clean sheets and a leading save ratio of 83.9 per cent, earned her a first senior call-up to Emma Hayes’s USA squad in November and she’s since been able to gain further experience in the national-team setup while working towards her maiden appearance.

That opportunity of course came on Saturday night, in the first of back-to-back Californian friendlies with Brazil this month, and the goalkeeper took to Instagram to express her pride afterwards.

She said: “First cap!!! Unreal, thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this moment. Great shift by the squad to get the W and the clean sheet.”

The reaction to that post has been brilliant and the sheer volume of comments on it from her United team-mates shows just how popular a member of the squad she is, and how proud everyone back here in Manchester is of her latest achievement.

Tullis-Joyce’s debut has been a real highlight of the international break so far, which has already been a busy window for United’s players since the games began at the back end of last week.

Lucy Newell (U19s) and Kayla Rendell (U23s) have both played twice for England’s youth teams, while seven other Reds have made a sole appearance for their respective countries.

Grace Clinton, Ella Toone, Aoife Mannion, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Emma Watson all featured in Nations League matches across Europe on Friday night, before Hinata Miyazawa completed 90 minutes as Japan shared friendly spoils with Colombia on Sunday.

The action continues for our international representatives tomorrow (Tuesday), before Marc Skinner’s squad reassemble at Carrington ahead of this Sunday’s huge Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final away to Manchester City.

Be sure to check out our guide to the ongoing national-team window for a reminder of the fixtures between now and then, and who could be involved.

Man Utd tipped to ‘quickly’ land PL ‘sensation’ as ‘first’ summer signing for two reasons with transfer ‘inevitable’

According to reports, Manchester United could sign Brentford ‘sensation’ Bryan Mbeumo this summer as he’s considered a leading target for two reasons.

The Red Devils are lacking in attacking areas as they are 16th in our open play goals Premier League table after 31 matches.

Man Utd require a major squad overhaul with Ruben Amorim‘s side spending most of this season in the bottom half of the Premier League.

United’s squad is not currently suited to Amorim’s preferred style and formation, as their limited funds prevented them from making wholesale changes in January.

The Premier League giants needed to offload unwanted talents to raise funds for signings in January and this remains the case heading into the summer with upgrades required in various positions.

READ: Manchester United are stuck in limbo: they need to fail properly and get relegated

Man Utd have been toothless in attack this season, while Mbeumo has shone for Brentford and has stepped up following Ivan Toney’s move to the Saudi Pro League.

The talented right-winger – who can also play as a forward – has 16 goals and six assists in his 35 appearances for Brentford across all competitions.

The 25-year-old is attracting interest from elsewhere heading into the summer. He could be a low-cost option for Big Six clubs as his current contract is due to expire in 2026.

A report from Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Mbeumo ‘could be Man Utd’s first signing’ ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The Premier League ‘sensation’ has emerged as a possible signing for Man Utd, with ‘sporting directors believing he can offer immediate solutions and fit perfectly into the new project’.

‘United’s front office is already preparing to make several signings to bolster an attack that has lost its luster. The sporting directors believe Mbeumo can offer immediate solutions and fit perfectly into the new project.

‘His contract with Brentford, which expires next year, could facilitate a more affordable deal than his current level in the English league dictates. The possibility of a price reduction makes the Cameroonian an even more attractive target.

‘Brentford already recognizes that retaining him will be a complex undertaking. His performance, combined with the growing interest from the Premier League’s strongest clubs, makes a sale practically inevitable.

‘Manchester United is willing to take a step forward and take advantage of the current contractual situation to get ahead of the competition and quickly finalize a signing that would excite the fans.’

Man Utd: Ex-Red Devils assistant backs shock ‘return’ for one star under Amorim for ‘obvious reason’

Former Manchester United assistant Rene Meulensteen has backed Marcus Rashford to “return” to the Premier League giants this summer.

Rashford left Man Utd in this year’s winter transfer window to join Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy for around £40m.

The Man Utd academy product announced his intention to depart for a new challenge ahead of the window and was linked with several European giants before he signed for Aston Villa.

The England international’s poor form and huge salary proved huge stumbling blocks for interested clubs, but Aston Villa decided to take a punt on the forward after they sold Jhon Duran to Al Nassr.

This gamble is paying off as Rashford has three goals and four assists in his 12 appearances across all competitions.

Over the weekend, a report claimed Rashford’s Man Utd ‘career is over’ with ‘no way back’ under head coach Ruben Amorim.

Despite this, Meulensteen has explained why he thinks Rashford “will return to Man Utd” this summer.

“I think Marcus Rashford will return to Manchester United for the new season,” Meulensteen said.

“If you believe the market and how it reacted to him becoming available in January, there were obvious reasons why he never made the move that he wanted to – it never materialised.

“He wanted to make the move to Barcelona; it didn’t work out for him. He wanted to make a loan move which turned permanent at the end of the season – this didn’t work out either. Aston Villa can sign him if they wish, but they aren’t obligated to do so.

“He may not have many other options; I’m presuming that he wishes to stay in Europe.

“There’s a possibility that he has enjoyed his football so much at Villa, they could end the season with a few trophies, and they have some bigger knockout fixtures coming up in the FA Cup and the Champions League – these are the games that he wants to play in.”

Meulensteen has also urged his former club to keep Kobbie Mainoo amid reports suggesting they could cash in on the midfielder to raise funds.

“Kobbie Mainoo looked brilliant when he stepped into the senior Manchester United team from the youth setup,” Meulensteen added.

“He has his entire career ahead of him and the team should do what they can to keep him; I’d be very sad if they decided to sell him.

“At the end of the day, they don’t have another young and energetic midfielder like him, he has proven that he can play at that level.

“I wouldn’t be hasty to let him go, but it’s clear that he has fallen to the wayside – the situation needs rectifying.

“It may be as a result of financial regulations that they are looking to explore a deal with clubs for him, but to me, he looks like the kind of player that you would build that side around for years to come.”

Pep Guardiola accuses United fans of “lacking class” after dull Derby draw at Old Trafford – report

Manchester United and Manchester City played out a forgettable 0-0 draw at Old Trafford yesterday, in a game that did little to excite either set of supporters.

United fans attempted to lift their side to a winner but unfortunately Ruben Amorim’s men couldn’t muster up a goal despite creating the better chances.

However, in their efforts certain sections of the home faithful appeared to cross the line by singing songs about Phil Foden’s mother.

As reported by The Mirror, City boss Pep Guardiola heard the chants and accused the portion of United fans of lacking class.

Speaking in his post match interview, the Spaniard widely condemned the chanting and says it’s an issue in football across the world that needs to be addressed.

“A lack of class. But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know?

“Honestly, I don’t understand what goes on in the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed. But it is what it is. It happens everywhere, not just in the UK,” he said.

Foden, himself, could clearly hear the chants and reacted to the crowd by waving his hands towards them in the first half of the stalemate.

— StrettyEnd (@_StrettyEnd) April 7, 2025

City also released a statement on the incident, stating they are “shocked and disgusted” and it’s expected to be passed to the FA to make a decision on any potential punishment for United.

On the pitch, Foden was largely anonymous throughout the first 60 minutes and was replaced by Jeremy Doku, who also struggled to make an impact.

United’s well-drilled back line were barely troubled by City’s star studded attacking players and are now a lot harder to breakdown than they were earlier in the campaign.

Amorim will be hoping the defensive stability will provide the base for a strong end to the season that could still end in some kind of glory through the Europa League.

Video: Amorim has last laugh over Gary Neville with brilliant put-down at press conference

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim gave a humorous response to Gary Neville’s criticism of his team’s display versus Manchester City.

While hardly a classic, United showed good tactical solidity to nullify a poor City side and certainly had some chances to win the game, as they pushed for a winner in the second half.

The game ended in a drab 0-0, with both teams seemingly content with a point at full-time.

Commenting on the match, the Sky Sports pundit Neville was scathing of the lack of fight in United’s effort versus their local rivals.

“I think they all walked off thinking ‘we’re ok here we got away without making a mistake’. That was the sort of type of game. It was really disappointing.”

“I apologise for my co-commentary actually, I think I let it get to me. I was boring on there as well, drab as well. Honestly, the whole game.”

Speaking to the press after the match, Ruben Amorim drew laughter from the journalists present when he suggested Neville was always complaining about something.

When asked about Neville’s words he retorted, “I understand that Gary Neville is critical about everything so I understand that part.”

He admitted that neither his side nor Pep Guardiola’s team were anything close to their best this season and that this certainly contributed to the cautious nature of the match.

“Then I understand that we are in the moment that we are doing the worst season in history. Manchester City won everything in the past, (but) this season is struggling.”

“So we are not in the best moments to give the best spectacle to every fan. We are not fighting for the big things so of course it’s different but you have to look at the context of the game.”

He also stated that he understood the reaction of numerous former United players turned pundits as they “were fighting every time for the titles so it’s a different context.”

Amorim himself was also far from happy with the performance of his team as he also highlighted after the match that his side need to improve in every aspect in the future.

Lyon beat Lille ahead of Europa League first leg

Monday 07 April 2025 10:00

Lyon warmed up for their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Manchester United with a morale-boosting comeback victory over Lille on Saturday.

Paulo Fonseca’s side, who were beaten 4-2 by fellow top-four challengers Strasbourg last weekend, went behind 47 seconds into what was billed as another key clash in the race for Europe.

Lille travelled to the match at the Groupama Stadium – where we will play on Thursday night – two points ahead of Les Gones and Bafode Diakite’s early header threatened to stretch that advantage further.

Star attacker Rayan Cherki was named on the bench but had to be introduced in the seventh minute, after Ernest Nuamah suffered a knee injury.

Diakite flashed another header narrowly wide, before good work by former Arsenal pair Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alexandre Lacazette led to Thomas Meunier handling the ball in the box.

The referee consulted with the VAR and pointed to the spot, giving Lacazette the opportunity to coolly slot home an equaliser as he sent Lucas Chevalier the wrong way.

The contest remained level until the dangerous Cherki had his say 20 minutes from time, cushioning a loose ball on his thigh and finding the far corner before Chevalier could get down to make the save.

Lyon should have had a third late on, when Thiago Almada shot straight at Chevalier, but the hosts held on to move into the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot – although they did drop a position on Sunday, after Strasbourg won at Reims.

Our upcoming opponents have now lost just once at home in all competitions since October, with that defeat coming against newly confirmed champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Cherki’s fine season continues, with the 21-year-old now having registered nine goals and 18 assists across his 36 appearances this term.

Nuamah has three Europa League goals to his name this term.

He sent a message of support for Nuamah following the final whistle, as the Ghanaian looks set to join Malick Fofana on the sidelines for Thursday’s tie.

“A big thought for Ernest,” he said. “I know it’s not easy to get injured, and come back to us quickly.

“A speedy recovery. We’re waiting for you impatiently because we need you.”

Man Utd: Red Devils ‘plan to sell’ star after £64m bid with same ‘offer’ lined up for replacement

Man Utd plan on spending the money they receive from Atletico Madrid for Antony on Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been having a nightmare season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 13th after their 0-0 draw against arch-rivals Man City on Sunday.

Amorim has struggled to get his players to adapt to his new playing style, philosophy and tactics – but they do still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League if they win the Europa League.

Gary Neville said on Sunday that Man Utd will require at least five new players in the starting XI for Amorim’s system to be successful next season.

But one of those players is unlikely to be Antony – who has been doing well out on loan at Spanish side Real Betis – with former Man Utd assistant manager Rene Meulensteen insisting the Brazilian “has no future” at the Premier League club.

Meulensteen said recently: “Antony has no future at Manchester United. If I was him, I’d stay at Real Betis, without a doubt. He’s never really lived up to the expectations or the price tag at United, but he’s found his feet in Spain. He seems to be a lot happier playing football and in life generally at Betis – which is the most important thing.

READ: 16 Conclusions on Man Utd 0-0 Man City: Fernandes brilliant, Garnacho poor, Guardiola shows ‘lack of class’

“If he returned to Manchester, he’d fall straight back into the rut he was in before he left, which wouldn’t be good for anybody. I can’t see him returning under any circumstance; it’s probably best for all parties that he joins Betis on a permanent deal.”

A report last week claimed that Man Utd have now received an offer of €75m (£64m) for Antony with Spanish website Fichajes now claiming that the Red Devils ‘are planning to sell’.

Man Utd ‘have begun to seriously consider selling Antony’ and ‘are looking to recoup some of the investment made in the Brazilian’, while interest from Atletico Madrid ‘could accelerate the player’s departure’.

The report adds that Man Utd are ‘already planning a €75m (£64m) offer for Antony’s replacement’ and adds:

‘A potential sale of Antony would open the door to a replacement in attack, and Manchester United already have a young talent in mind to replace him. This is Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, a 20-year-old winger currently playing for Borussia Dortmund.

‘Bynoe-Gittens has impressed in the Bundesliga, registering 8 goals and 4 assists in 28 appearances for his team. His technical ability, speed, and ability to create danger down the flanks have caught the attention of several major European clubs.

‘Bynoe-Gittens’ market value is around €75 million, reflecting the young player’s great potential. Although his price tag is considerable, Manchester United is confident he could be a long-term investment that would bolster the team’s forward line with freshness and talent.’

Manchester United relegation would help fast-track reboot as Ruben Amorim left baffled

As Manchester United were beaten again midweek and were exceedingly tedious and boring on Sunday and look set to finish somewhere between 12th and 16th, I wonder how long some of their current supporters – all the tourists, megastore dwellers and once-a-season day trippers –  will stand this level of not just failure, but sheer dullness, before walking away and not coming back?

There’s no reflected glory for these supporters in such tedious mediocrity. Not even many goals. Only Everton and West Ham have scored fewer outside the bottom three. There’s no reward for their extravagant spend. No galacticos to admire. You can’t get a sense of dominance or superiority after another defeat or eye-meltingly boring draw. It all starts to look bloated, flatulent and self-regarding.

In my life, only Liverpool in the ’70s and ’80s have attracted so many casual fans, there for a day out, just needing the validation of supporting a successful club, unlike the rest of us who use different cultural metrics to decide who to support. Clearly, you’d think money spent will induce a revival at some point, but we’ve been saying that for a decade and it’s no nearer now than it ever was. Further away if anything, even despite the regular trophy wins. They somehow don’t count.

The game against City was laughably bad – it was fourth-tier standard. Imagine paying to see that dirt? It has to erode support because it’s become endemic. They’re almost always boring and useless. You can’t keep being like that and expect the fickle proportion of the crowd to keep paying to endure it. They offer nothing at all to the glory hunter.

The fact it’s been worse than ever since Jim Ratcliffe arrived is in part due to his masquerading as some sort of ruthless businessman but coming across as a petro-chemical Worzel Gummidge. But fans have a long history in football of being able to support the club even when the owner/chairman/Middle-Eastern fascist autocrat is turning it into a despicable hell hole. But is this true of United? There’s an argument that they have a bigger but more fragile fanbase than most, based on tourists and indeed have actively pursued those people.

Until recently the support in general has never had to question itself the way most of us who stick with a club through the trophyless decades do. Never got to that ‘think I’ll give it a miss this week’ stage. So now is a real test the likes of which only old gadgees will ever recall having.

The 1973/74 campaign when they were relegated was my best ever season. Boro won the Second Division by a record amount, losing only four times and beating Sheffield Wednesday 8-0, and it’s often forgotten Carlisle also got promoted to the First Division with Chris Balderstone, unusually a midfielder who was also a first-class cricketer for Yorkshire and Leicestershire with 19,000 runs to his name and two caps for England. Denis Law sent United down. Oh how we gloated.

Because even back then Manchester United attracted kids in my class to support them just as Liverpool did too. They did seem glamorous somehow, though it was six years since the European Cup triumph. But that was never attractive to me. The immutable relationship between the distance of Boro’s ground to my house somehow seemed to trump such shallow behaviour. I was only two miles away from supporting Darlington, if you can imagine such a curse.

Anyway, when they were relegated, kids stopped supporting them for a few months, until they started burning up the Second Division because, as we know, despite the Premier League’s desperate attempts to convince us that just being in their league is better per se, they lie because winning loads of games, no matter the division, is actually brilliant. And they all flocked back. The same thing may happen again, except they’ll never be relegated.

Ruben Amorim has one window to fill the squad with players who will slot into his system. And you can’t transform a side in one window, of course, but can you see being 15th by November being tolerated by anyone, let alone a clueless scarecrow like the extraordinary thick-but-thinks-he’s-clever Ratcliffe? I don’t even think Amorim can. He seems almost amused or embarrassed by how awful they are.

Relegation would reboot the club and success in the second tier would, counterintuitively, give supporters something to bind them to the club anew. But since that is unlikely to happen, they’re stuck in limbo, building a circus tent for the clown car of a team to park a dysfunctional club’s history with a fading support. Who wants to buy the club’s official packet of egg noodles when you’ve just been beaten for the 13th time this season? The whole edifice is built on big success, not abject, limp losses.

And as revenues fall and fans stay at home, United will have to pull their horns in, somehow get rid of the Glazers and Ratcliffe and all the pointy-shoed execs who aggrandise themselves but are useless. But then for that to happen, they’ll need a season where they fail properly and go down, otherwise this mediocrity will continue to dominate and they’ll never recover. Funds will dwindle as the chopped liver supplier and others withdraw their sponsorship, slipping behind others who are more monied, who do attract the plastic fans and tourists. United have always benefited from – I won’t call them fans, that’d be an insult to their real fans – followers, who just want the reflected glory or the spectacle. When they go, what will be left? Not a 75,000 stadium and certainly not a 100,000 one.

They need to get much worse to get better, but without the courage to be more hopeless, they’ll continue to be a bit hopeless, very, very uninteresting, but with a dwindling support.
